The Injured Ear - Ouch!
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

The injured ear is always accompanied by a story...

One of my medical assistants has a very challenging teenager. He mouths-off, swears, and is very disrespectful to his hard-working mother. Recently, in a spontaneous act of frustration, she slapped him across the face and accidentally hit his ear, instead of the mouth that was emitting four-letter words. Instantly, his hearing changed (albeit, temporary).

Child abuse or not...you be the judge. Did he deserve it? In my opinion, he did not. No child should be hit or slapped, no matter what emotional buttons they push. Adults must have the wisdom and constraints not to strike out physically at their kids (unless they are defending themselves).

Blunt traumas of the ear are one of the most common types of ear injuries. The sudden application of air pressure in the ear canal can occur from soccer and basketballs, wrestling with friends, a blast (from a firework or gun), or an open hand slap. A ruptured eardrum can even occur from a poorly-placed kiss. Blow in my ear and I will follow you anywhere, including the ENT.

Several years ago, I had a 12-year-old girl present to my office with blood coming out of her right ear. She said that a man in a ski mask ran up to her at the bus stop and slapped her ear and ran away into the woods. Yes. That happened. Her shifty-eyed father was not very interested in me calling the police to find this masked perpetrator, reminiscent of OJ Simpson's exhaustive search for the killer.

The bottom line was that he slapped her across the ear and ruptured her eardrum. She did recover physically from this injury, but the emotional scars of being abused by her Dad can go deep. I did call Child Protective Services, as required by law, because I have no idea if this was an isolated incident.

Trauma to the outer ear can also cause lacerations and severe bruising that can result in a cauliflower ear. Most minor lacerations of the auricle can be repaired, usually with perfect cosmetic results. It is not uncommon to have earrings ripped from a pierced ear, accidentally caught on something, or even pulled during an altercation. These, too, can be repaired. Last week, I sutured another teenager that had the crap beat out of him at school, sustaining a cut above his eye, the back of his head, and his outer left ear was bruised. His eardrum was intact, but the appearance of the outer ear is always a cause for concern.

An accumulation of blood in the outer ear (called a hematoma) can result in a permanent cosmetic deformity called a cauliflower ear, unless it is treated promptly. Left alone, the accumulated blood in the ear will be replaced by fibrous tissue and perichondritis (a cartilage infection). We really do not want our kids looking like Mike Tyson or Leon Spinks. (Mike and Leon...this is just a joke. Please don't hurt me) I typically refer outer ear hematomas to a plastic surgeon or ENT specialist so that this blood can be definitively drained and irrigated.

Another type of outer ear injury is the thermal injury. Growing up in a cold climate and not wanting to wear a hat with those furry earmuffs that would mess up my hair, I had some close calls with frostbite. When that icy snowball hits your ear, it feels like it could just snap right off the side of your head. Snow-boarders and skiers tend to show up at ERs during the winter season with some painful, cold-damaged ears. I remember seeing the photos of the doctor who survived that terrible Mt. Everest attempt. His outer ears were nearly gone.

If you are foolish enough to snowboard without a hat (let alone a helmet!) then you better learn some rapid-warming techniques to prevent outer ear thermal injuries. The prompt application of moist, warm (100-104 degree) gauze can prevent permanent damage. Injuries caused by heat are also relatively common. Burns, including sunburns, should also be treated promptly to prevent cosmetic damage.

Q-tip injuries are a weekly posting on the WebMD Ear Disorders Board. For some reason, people feel that wax is dirt that must be thoroughly removed. The probe their ear canals with bobby pins, toothpicks, and cotton-tipped swabs. Granted, earwax is not the most appealing substance on this planet, and no one really likes to see it dripping out of your ear, it is NOT dirty. Short of a public relations campaign to restore the damaged image of earwax, they only thing I can do is continue my personal campaign against people using Q-tips for this purpose. Q-tips do perforate eardrums from time to time -- a very painful experience.

A teen was cleaning her ear a month ago when the bathroom door was suddenly opened by an impatient sibling needing to urinate. The door struck her elbow and the Q-tip plunged deep in her ear canal, resulting in a very impressive rupture that took over a month to heal. Fortunately, there was not permanent damage.

Children do other stupid things. I had the class clown in my trauma room one day with blood pouring out of his ears. Apparently, as the story went, he had a sharpened pencil in each ear, dancing around in an effort to impress one of the girls in his class. Not amused by this display, the girl slapped one of those protruding pencils and jammed it through the eardrum into the middle ear, damaging those tiny ear bones. Had there been a bit more force, the pencil may have killed him. This even makes MY ear hurt telling you about it, but a skillful ENT repaired the damage.

So, the outer ears are more important than just holding up our glasses, or providing a place to hand earrings. It is okay to nibble on them from time to time, but otherwise, treat them with respect.

mmm..here's a personal injury story that I'm isn't very common: my boyfriend actually injured my ear. He was kissing it and sucked on my ear and I felt a pop and it started bleeding. My doctor laughed really hard (which made is more humerous and less embarassing)

I too have a story and wanted your opinion...Years ago I had an eardrum ruptured after flying across country one day, that evening I was in terrible pain and was taken to ER and treated...two months ago I had a cold and went to visit some friends for dinner who live in a city up a very small grade (maybe 2000 feet tops)from us, on the return trip my ears wouldn't "pop" properly and I had a small sense of hearing loss. After sleeping about 3 hours I awake to great pain. I was up all night in terrible pain. I went to my doctor the next day she said I had hemorraging on my eardrum. She said it could have been because I had a cold, it might be caused by a virus, but treated it with internal antibiotics, external ear drop antibiotics, and drops for pain. It eventually got better, and never did in fact drain blood as she thought it might. Last month I flew across county, went scuba diving, and never had any trouble. Last night I took an aerial tram in Palm Springs CA up 8500 feet. I never thought of my ear until on the way up they started, "popping" so they felt fine, but on the way down, I could not get them to "pop" or pressurize properly. I went to bed later, but was awaken hours later with severe pain. I hae had a heating pad on my ear all day, and taking tylenol for the pain, and will visit my doctor tomorrow, but with our in-home otoscope my husband said he sees a lot of blood covering the ear drum again, and I in fact felt in actually seeping in this morning when I was awoke with the pain. With given only this information, can you take a guess as to what could be the problem?

I started to use a qtip to clean my ears, then multi-tasking as I do, I left the qtip in the ear slightly, but when I began "fluffing" with my hair, it jammed the qtip into my ear. It hurt like....well, it hurt. No blood, but definite hearing loss and a constant little pain. Is there some sort of treatment I can do or does this just heal itself in a couple of weeks?

Please help! I suffered from a few ear infections during my childhood, nothing out of the ordinary (never had tubes put in my ears); however, I am now 26 years old and have had three ear infections in the past year. The first happened last February - I had a terrible cold and then the ear infection started. Went to the doctor, got some meds, and was fine. The second happened about six months later, again, in conjunction with a cold. I asked my doctor during that second visit if there was a problem in my ear, since this seemed odd to me. He thought it was a coincidence and recommended a particular cold tablet. The next cold I had, I used his recommended cold tablet and I didn't get an ear infection (I was thrilled!). Now, I have a third in this year's time period, but I'm not sick whatsoever. No cold, nothing. Last Wednesday, I noticed that my inner left ear felt swollen - thought maybe I had a pimple or something. I'm on Minocycline for acne, so I figured it would be fine in a day or so. It didn't and it's now Sunday. At times, my ear and the areas around my ear feel itchy, and it seems to feel drainy from time to time, too. But it's not draining, even though I'm using a heating pad and laying on that side during the night. When I turn my head quickly or in a certain direction, it hurts more - not a sharp pain, but more of a dull, constant uncomfortable feeling. I obviously need to visit the doctor tomorrow morning... Is this a coincidence or is there something wrong with my ears all of a sudden? I'm a little freaked out!! I'd appreciate insight from anyone who may have experienced something similar as an adult.

All My young life I often suffered from constant ear infections. Now these were severe ear infections causeing horrible pain and even hearing lose at times. I haven't had an ear infection since My ear drum ruptered when I had one of these infections. the doctor ansured me it would only last for a day or so but the dranage lasted for 3 and a half days! why would It last that long? It healed with scaring to the ear drum but nw I tend to have hearing problems out of my left ear(mind you that the same ear ruptured twice more after this). Can the scarring effect my hearing?

ruptures to the ear drum will spontaneously heal. You should always see a doctor for this though: you will need antibiotics. Infection can cause the drum to not properly heal- resulting in permanant hearing damage. Also, keep the ear dry with water-proof earplugs. If it's cold or windy, wear the earplugs then too. In most cases the eardrum will heal on it's own and you will have essentially no long-term damage.

back crowns prepped, stretched mouth out of alighnment when under local, produced incredible pain. After pain killers, liquid diet, no talking I saw a Chiro. Md Treatment worked after a month of agony, some relief! TMJ suspected, after better, ears filled with fluid and pain. Is it TMJ? I think so but what can be done?

Almost the same thing as the last poster. I had a sinus infection and I thought an ear infection. After a month ear still hurt so saw doc again. TMJ. Anti-inflammatory have helped, but now I do have an ear infection and as bizarre as it sounds it feels like there is something solidish in my ear. Something that can be moved around. Doc said he didn't see anything. Still there.... Its driving me nutts. It doesn't feel like a normal(?) ear infection.

The past 2 years I've had double the ear infections I've had as a child atleast. I'm 28 years old and in the past 2 years I believe its 3-4 ear infections. Why as an adult am I getting these so frequently now? A co-worker suggested food allergies. Oddly enough...

I practice a martial arts self defense called Krav Maga. Well a day ago I was training and didn't block a hit and got hit on my left ear. Immediately I heard a shrieking ringing, felt disoriented and fell to the floor. The ringing has gotten better; however I can't hear well out of that ear, and when I try to "pop" my ears, air comes out of that ear. Did I damage my ear drum or will this get better on it's own?

Okay doc's...I am truely worried.

I keep getting fluid build up and my ear, although it's not as painful as it used to be. What happens is that I goes into my face and into my eye now too. Before I know it, my face is swallon up and it does not stop until I get on antibiotics. What could be causing these repeated infections? I had ear an infections before, but I have always been able to combat them. Now, I can get one at anytime without knowing it before my face blows up. Infections are pretty continous and I cannot go to work like this.
I am at a point of this affecting my income and general life.
I have been to the doctor, and all they do is give me antibiotics. Once they kept me overnight admistering IV antibiotics. When I talk to the ENT and a regular doctor....I just get ...well shuffled along. What gives?

SINCERELY IN NEED OF GOOD DIRECTION>

When I was little, I saw my friend sneeze with his nose plugged. I thought it would be cool to try it, so I did, but then my ears popped. I was a little freaked, so I breathed in by my nose really hard and they went back to normal. Then, the next morning, I yawned and they popped again. I quickly breathed in hard by my nose and it went back to normal. Now im 14, and ever since then I've had to do that everytime I yawn. Nothing bleeds or comes out, they just start popping. I don't know what's wrong and I would really like to know. snwbordprinces06@aol.com if you can help.

I had Ottis Media, a ear infection liek a month ago, the pain was so bad i had to be put on pain killers. they also put me on amoxicillin for it. When i finished the meds the infection did not clear up so i went ot a ear nose and throat specialist, he said my ear needs a cleaning and i still had the infection badly. He put a ointment in after he cleaned my ear out and told me to put a cotton ball in and keep it in for a week without ever leaving it out. And then he gave me some ear drops,(Neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates and Hydrocortisone Otic Suspension USP) was what the bottle says. He tole me not to start taking it until a week after the ointment was put in and then 10 days 4 drops in the ear 3 times a day. So i did i even did it for a extra day. THe infection went away or it felt like it and yesterday it creeped up on me again same pain and all. i still have the ear drops and have refills. Should i use them? And why do i Keep getting these in fections i have not been swimming and i dry my ear after every shower. I don't use Qtips cause i was told not to from my doctor. What do i do cause it is hurting me so badly!

I had it a few years ago and asked my mom, before she died, and she said it was just a cartilage build-up and it would go away. I've had the normal childhood ear infections, never a perforated eardrum or anything. But for a while now I've been having hearing loss, more wax buildup, ringing and whenever I hear certain noises it sounds and feels like a butterfly or something winged is flapping inside my ears. It doesn't exactly hurt, but it's bothersome to me and my brother-in-law that plays guitar. Even dialing the phone or hearing it ring. I've been to the Doctors and they just told me it was wax buildup and gave me ear drops that didn't help at all besides make my ears oily! What could it be?

I have had this feeling of crackling or water like in my right ear for several months. It doesn't hurt but it is very annoying. Even when I swallow I can make it crackle. If I hiccup or yawn I can feel the rustling....not sure how exactly to describe it but it's a muffled sound like I had a liquid in my ear.

When I was young, I almost always had an ear infection yearly and back then (1960's), Doctors gave my parents a oily liquid that my Dad would warm up to numb the earache pain. That is the same feeling I get like I have that liquid with a cotton piece inside.
I can hear okay though.
My doctor said that it was probably allergy related and that my ear looked fine inside.
I have had water in my ear in the past and it usually dried up and went away but never had anything like this as long as I have had it. If I shake my head side to side there is no crackling like when I had water in my ear. It is when I swallow, or yawn, tighten the muscles in my jaw, etc. It's only in my right ear.

I am about to tell my Dr that I want him to refer me to a ear, eyes, nose Dr but thought I would check here first to see if others have had this experience.
Thanks

We went to my doctor and found out that he had a perforated ear drum and was wondering will we have to go to a ear specialist or will it just heal on its own? I looked at the hole and its not that large and no puss is discharging from his ear. There is no pain or anything like that. Well let me know what we are supposed to do. I keep telling him that we can just wait until it heals but hes really worried. Let me know asap thanks.

I want some advise... I went to the doctor to have my ears cleaned yesterday and i think my eardrum was injured pretty badly. The nurse squirted a jet of water to knock of the wax that was coving my ear drum about three or four times. I think she got it off the first time without realizing it so the 2nd though 4th time caused extreme pain. In fact it hurt so bad that i passed out in the chair. She finally stopped but i think it may have been too late.
All day that day it hurt pretty bad and when i woke up this morning i couldn't hear out of that ear and it felt like there was liquid in it. My ear was covered in blood and there is blood all inside of my ear, probably covering my eardrum as well. If anyone has any suggestions on what i should do please let me know. timmyboy234@yahoo.com

I have an ear injury story for you...I was out in a hail storm and a piece of hail ricocheted off the roof of my car and went into my ear, deep. The pain was enormous, when it subsided after 10 minutes, i was off balance, light headed, and lost about 50% of my hearing in that ear for most of that day. Today, almost 2 weeks later, I came down with an ear infection, it's constantly plugged, and I'm still getting blood on the end of my Q-tip after my shower. Any ideas?

I had a cold back in the summer which included a fierce off & on earache in my left ear that seemed to stretch all the way into the back of my neck... cold went away & earache lessened to occasional pain.
Now, I have had a severely watery left eye for more than 2 months... I was first treated for pink eye (twice, back to back) with antibiotic drops, then incredible pain set in: left front side of my head, forehead directly above the left eye down the corner of my eye, bridge of my nose, under my eye, 4 top rear molars, and of course that left ear... treated 10 days for sinus infection with amoxicillin, 2 days after finishing the antibiotic the pain is back in all the same areas with a vengence... the optomitrist discovers a fully blocked tear duct & orders a 10 day round of augmentin 500 mg x4 daily... after 4 days the pain subsided but the eye was still watering so the optomitrist sends me to an ocular surgeon who confirms a blocked tear duct & schedules me for a DCR procedure in about a week.... Problem Now: I finished the augmentin 2 days ago & am in terrible pain again & have no oral fever but a tympanic temp of 100.0 in the right ear & 100.8 in the left ear... I do not doubt that my tear duct is blocked & needs surgery but I am concerned that my problem could be coming from that darn left ear... my md says it looks fine, but why on earth would it be hurting so bad especially after all the antibiotics I've had? I am really starting to worry about this.

I can blow hot air out of my ear, and it makes a crackling sound when i blow and it sounds like the wheel on wheel of fortune spinning, then I can feel this strange feeling liquid, and I don't even know how it happened, just one night I was sleeping on my bed, my head was on the side, on my right ear, and I always sleep like this so...anyway, the next morning inside my ear was all liquidy, and it was popped, and it has been like this for about, 5 months now, can you tell me what is wrong?

I too have a story and am in terrible need of your guidance. The inside of my ears are itchy! I know...weird but this has happened to me since I had my tonsils removed when I was 21. Anytime I get a cold, the inside of my ears itch and I start to make that weird sound in my throat to try and alleviate the problem. Now not only do they itch but I feel like am under water. Very difficult to sleep. Any suggestions??

Hello everyone! I have a questions. I had a severe sinus headache and I took tylenol for sinus pain and pressure. The next thing I know the pain and pressure was gone but then I felt pressure in my left ear. I had a ringing sound and I tried to clean my ear out with a q-tip. I don't know if I had done something with the q-tip or it was the pressure from the sinuses.

I had to go to the emergency room because my ear was hurting and I had a bloody discharge coming from my ear. The ER doctor said I had a peforated eardrum. He gave me an antibiotic which I finished a couple of days ago.

It's been 5 days and I still feel pressure and hear ringing. I'm not sure if my hearing is effected by the peforated eardrum or pressure.

My question, is "How long will I have this ringing and pressure?" It's very aggravating and affecting my social life.

Thanks!
Kim

My inner ear has been bleeding for about a month now.
It hurts.
Not flowing blood but it IS bleeding.
My other ear did the same thing for about a week but stopped.
What can I do about the one that won't stop bleeding and hurting.

Thanks.

Sarah,

A diagnosis of your ear can only be made by a qualified health professional who can examine your ear in person. Make an appointment -- you only have one pair of ears.

I hope they're better soon!

I have a condition in one of my ears, and possibly a bit in the other. The inside of my ear itches, and I will catch myself scratching it when I sleep. This is very painfull. When I awake the inside of my ear is covered in a white crusty scab. Often my ear will "water" all night long to the point where it is practically flowing. Is there any apparent diagnosis you can suggest for my watering, itchy ear ?

Ok, this is a strange one. I have NOT ever had any ear injury, but for the past few weeks, and only at night when I am lying down, I hear this 'crackling noise' in my left ear. It reminds me of the sound of rice crispies or static electricity. The sound may last from a few seconds to a few minutes, and is very annoying. I was recently treated for double pneumonia, and since my return home from the hospital, I have been noticing this crackling in my left ear. Any ideas as to the cause?

Hello, I am hoping you may have some info to share. I have seen2 doctors for my ears. The first, (believe or not) when I complained about pressure and that it became at least 7 hour muffle everytime i bend over, replied "well don't do that hahahaha". Next doctor sent me for a CT scan and determined it was a sinus infection? After sever different antibiotics, no results. It is now going on 4-5 years and I still feel like theres something in there moving around. Could you please offer any advice? Except "don't do that".

Okay, so my 2 yro daughter had a tube placed in the left yr last august. on the 19th, I noticed brown drainage on the side of her face, next to her ear, and inside the ear. I called her ENT and he said any drainage is a sign of infection and prescribed ear drops. The ear is STILL draining but I'm not sure if its still infected b/c now it looks like wax and it may just be a mixture of wax and meds. Her appt isn't til the 9th of May, should i take her to er? and about me, i just blew my nose and now i can 'hear' air in my ear and its hurting-what have i done!!

Can somebody PLEASE give me some advice? I have had itchy ears, earaches, all of the above going on, and additionally, have a huge lump underneath the right ear, and one starting under the left. I went to see an ENT and he put me on prednisone and Keflex (30 days of Keflex) and NOTHING has changed, and I am done with the medicines. They cleaned out my ears so I can hear better, but I still hear crackling and the lumps have not changed. ANY idea what this is? I am sooo frustrated!!

this helped me, especially the link to ruptured eardrums saying they usually heal on their own...

i was at the pool, and my friend did a flip and a spin at the same time (misty) off the diving board. instead of a regular flip like i always do, i tried the misty. i landed on my ear, and it hurt so bad that i left the pool. good to know that it will probably heal without surgery

I used to have ear infections all the time when I was a kid and because of it, my ears aren't so great anymore. My left ear is dominate and I'm nearly deaf in my right ear.

Well, for a little over a week now, my right ear, which constantly itches internally and has a bit of yellowish drainage, started bleeding off and on internally. It's not heavy or anything and sticking tissue in it helps to stop it for a while. Also, when I took a shower, it stopped for the entire day. In any case, it doesn't hurt at all, it's just the bleed. Does that mean I still could have ruptured my eardrum? I'm really really scared right now. I'd go to a doctor but I don't have medical insurance. Please help, darkwarriorgirl20@yahoo.com

To anonymous poster on 10/11/08:

Please have your ear examined by a health professional. As Dr. Moser discusses in his article, you can do real damage to your ear with a cotton swab. The best thing you can do if you're feeling that kind of pain is to have it examined and treated.

Hi,
Well for a year now I have been cleaning my ears with q-tips, and for a little over a month I have started to get serious liquid wax, and some hearing loss.
BEfore I did get some of this but I thought it was normal because I know some peoples wax are different. What should I do?
I threw out my Q-tips 3 days ago, and I wont use them. How can I clean my own ears out? Can I buy the cleaning solution from the Pharmacy or do I have to go to the doctor? Theres no pain. I did get a little blood, but only from the sides of the ear canal. Is this permanent? PLEASE HELP!

To think I put them in such danger
trying to remove ear wax with a Q-tip, toothpick or tweezer.
I meant well and I will make sure that this doesn't happen to my grandkids

Yea, I've also got a story. Well, yesterday, my friend came up to me, and for some reason just felt like slapping me in the ears! He cupped his hands and, pretty hardly, slapped them down on my ears. I fell to the ground (which really caught him off guard), and for the rest of that day, my right ear felt like it was underwater. I could still hear about half of what i could have before, but it sounded all muffled. For some reason, i havent had any problems with my left ear much. I expected it to be better overnite, but when i woke up today, it still felt muffled. It was definatly an improvment, but like I said, it still sounds muffled. Could this be serious, or should I check it out at the doctor?

I have had this condition on the lobes of my ears for a few years now. I had my ears pierced when I was 12, and got them double pierced when I was a few years older. I knew from the beginning that I was very sensitive to cheap earrings, but still wore them occasionally and they wouldn't bother me after I put my gold hoops back in. When I was 14, my first holes started growing these hard lumps around the hoop, and the right one got really large. They weren't like those regular "ear bumps", because you could always squeeze stuff out of them..but these, especially the right one has become very hard, and both of my first holes have grown in now. I have tried everthing from squeezing to hot compresses to see if anything will come out, but nothing seems to work. I have talked to my family doctor and she says that it is cartilidge build up and that if I get them removed they will just come back again and I will never be able to have my ears pierced in that spot again. I am just wondering what all of this is from. I have other piercings on my body and my ears double pierces, and also my top cartilidge pierced, and they have had no problems at all. I am just wondering what types of solutions there are to getting rid of them, because I want to start wearing earrings in those spots again. I honestly don't know what is is from..but figured it was from earing cheap costunme jewellery earrings when I was younger. I have had these bumps for about 4 or 5 years now, and want them gone. Any suggestions????

i have a really weird scenario. I have an ear block with about 70% loss of hearing with no pain at all. It just sounds like I'm underwater in my right ear. There's no swelling or drainage. I'm a pilot but haven't been flying in several weeks. I came home from college last week which is the only time I've been through any elevation change (of a whopping 300 ft) but I had no ear block at the time of the change. Last week I did a rapid decompression simulation at school from 3,000 to 13,000 ft or so but suffered no pain or ear block. I woke up this morning and couldn't hear right... If i push down on that little piece of skin that can close your outer ear and apply pressure then release I can hear for a few seconds before i feel pressure "close" it up again. This has happened to me before more than a year ago and I did have a case of swimmers ear almost 3 years ago but I don't know if that's a factor. Any guru's got any advice out there?

Q-tips in the ear are a bad idea. on monday i was cleaning out my ear and i accidently scratched the ear canal. it is one of the most painful things i have felt in a long time. i visited my doctor and they said there was earwax built up in my ear (why i was using the q-tip in the first place) and they wanted to flush it out with water. well a resident tried doing it and jabbed me in the bad ear with the metal thing that they use to flush out the ear. don't let residents do that sort of stuff. it hurts soo bad. i took 2 perks today and the pain will not go away. im trying to sleep but the pain is just too strong. i hope the medicine puts me to sleep soon.

I read up on it and saw that nasal sprays might help as it's likely in the eustachian tube...I've used Nasonex the last two nights. This morning while getting ready for my workout, I had trouble walking...couldn't keep my balance. The crackling sensation is a little better but this symptom is new. Do I need to see a doctor, or should I continue with the Nasonex and see what happens?
