Things that go cough in the night
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

One of the most common complaints that we see in a primary care practice is a cough. Often the result of a common cold or allergy, there is nothing more annoying than a persistent cough (Although diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, itching, sore throat, ear pain, abdominal cramps, backache, neck ache, runny nose, and sore feet also compete for that "Most Annoying" category.)

First, why do we cough? Coughing is important to remove unwanted secretions in our airway, whether it is from postnasal mucous, saliva, water, food, or whatever. If it doesn't belong in there, it needs to move out. There are sensitive cough receptors located throughout our airway, including the back of our throats and sinuses, and even in our stomachs and ear canal. Many Q-tip users have experienced a strange, reactive cough spasm when swabbing out earwax. And, as strange is sounds, a wax impaction is one potential cause of a chronic cough. Every time we cough, we irritate those cough receptors, and of course, every time those cough receptors are irritated we cough.

Probably the most common cause of an acute cough in all age groups is a viral infection...a cold. Allergies, including asthma (reactive airway disease) are a close second. Environmental insults such as second-hand cigarette smoke, fumes, and dust can also trigger a cough response. There are literally hundreds of causes of cough, from the more common ones that I just mentioned to some more serious medical problems. Any cough that persists or fails to respond to treatment should be carefully and thoroughly investigated until a cause is determined.

Last Mother's Day, we took my wife, kids, and grandchildren out to breakfast at a popular local restaurant. Needless to say, the place was packed, with people standing outside waiting for tables. Several folding chairs were made available for the more-elderly Moms. The area by the door is also a popular place for smokers, including some of those elderly Moms. I guess it is inappropriate to come down on those smoking Moms on Mother's Day. Apparently, one little child did not know this.

One elderly woman was puffin' away on her cigarette when she was noticed by a little boy about four or five years old, coming out the restaurant. He stopped in his tracks, stared at her for a moment, and then pointed his little finger sternly at her.

"You are going to DIE," he proclaimed. "You should NOT be smoking!" Grandma coughed a few times and smiled. The little anti-smoking advocate was quickly shuffled away into a waiting car. Happy Mother's Day!

Several years ago, my PA wife was working in a family practice clinic. She was seeing a two-year-old girl who had been coughing for nearly a month. Prior treatments for bronchitis and pneumonia were unsuccessful. The child continued to cough.

By taking a careful history of this cough, my wife determined that the cough started suddenly while the child was just sitting on the floor coloring. To make a long story short, a piece of blue crayon was surgically removed from her lungs a few days later.

On both the WebMD Ear Disorders board and the General Health board, we often get questions concerning the relationship of cough to gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). I can tell you by experience, including my own bout last night, that GERD definately causes a cough. As a matter of fact, several years ago I had to stop my ACE inhibitor (blood pressure medication) because of a cough -- a common side effect of this pharmaceutical class.

Children in day-care and schools are exposed to an astronomical amount of diseases that can result in cough. In children, a cough from a common cold can last weeks. When another viral infection jumps in during this period, the cough may be extended for much longer periods of time. These back-to-back viral infections are very common in my clinic setting.

There is a term in medicine called zoonosis, meaning a disease caused by animals. I often see Mominosis, a new medical term that I coined referring to a disease caused by the mother. There is a universal misunderstanding of cold medications: decongestants, antihistamines, cough expectorants, and cough suppressants.

If you give a stuffy child a decongestant (a medication that loosens and drains mucous) at bedtime, when the child is asleep and lying supine you will most definitely cause them to cough. If you also give them a cough expectorant (another drug that encourages you to cough), you are going to be in for a noisy night.

Although cough is medically beneficial, so is sleep...for everyone. In most cases, there is nothing wrong with giving a cough suppressant at bedtime, even though studies have proven them worthless, not much better than a placebo, in children under the age of five. Placebo or not, I let the parents make that decision.

Since colds last a week if you aggressively treat them and about seven days if you leave them alone, anything you are doing is only supportive. Perhaps I am just buying some time to allow the healing process to continue. I do try and make a person feel better while nature does the curing. However, the real goal is to treat the underlying cause of the cough, not necessarily the cough itself.

The last comment that I would like to make is about spitting out mucous. Why is it that men and boys develop this distasteful skill to a high degree? If there was an Olympic Loogie-Hocking Team, it would all be guys. It is important to try and make a productive cough worthwhile, so ladies, please, it is okay to hack up a big one once in a while...in private of course (and not aiming at a tree from a moving car). If you don't cough it UP and OUT, or successfully swallow it, the mucous will come back and bother you again and again.

GI reflux definitely triggers a cough. I see it in my son.

Its strange you mention a reflux (GERD) cough...For years I was treated for asthma, inhalers and all, because of a chronic cough. It wasn't asthma at all. When I finally had an EGD I had terrible GERD with ulcers and 4cm of Barrett's esophagus with LGD...80mg. daily of nexium got rid of my cough.

I find that I am prone to a tickly cough and seem to have a sensitive cough trigger. After coughing a few times, I almost invariably need to blow my nose. This leads me to believe that I probably do have a post-nasal drip.

two weeks ago I returned from a vacation with a "cold". I hydrated, rested and waited for it to resolve. In the meantime, I developed the wheezing of a large locomotive,(I am NOT asthmatic) so off the the doctor I went. Another week of steroids, cough medicine, rest and fluids only encouraged this problem. I ended up in the hospital for 3 days with hydration and severe asthmatic symptoms. Beware the unabated cough! Still on steroids and breathing treatments and I have NEVER been a smoker!!!

I would love to know the answer to the question about the 20 month old. My son is 32 months old and has had a cough since December! We've been using Albuterol, Xopenex, Amox (for ear infection), humidifier, etc. Nothing seems to be working. He's got a squeak in his left lung and nobody seems to know what's causing this. He's had allergy testing and we can't find a culprit. I'm desperate to find an answer and appropriate treatment. I just want my baby to feel well again. Before this, he was NEVER sick!

Several years ago, my daughter (then 2) developed a cough that lasted for months. We did the doctor thing several times with slight relief for a week or so but only to come back.

We took her to an allergist. They finally did a scan of her head. Her nasal cavity was severely impacted. They did a long, strong dose of antibiotics and it cleared right up.

She's had no problems since (except the normal cold, allergies, etc.) Hope this helps.

I am fine during the day but tired because like clockwork I start to cough at about bed time. So, once again I am not able to get any sleep. When I move or exercise I have no issue, but can not sleep or sit still during the day for long (back to back meetings) before the coughing begins.... I have not had more than a couple of hours sleep each night for the last 4 nights and can't find a walk in medical anywhere in this town...

StaceyRacey,

It sounds like a call and/or visit to your child's pediatrician might be a good idea...any time you have a situation that is chronic or acute you should call. Here's an overview of coughs and their cause that might help, but the only one who can diagnose and treat your child is the pediatrician.

I hope she feels better soon!

Thank you for your blog. I have been dealing with a nasty cough with my four year old daughter. After two trips to the doctor, one round of antibiotics and advice to just treat with over the counter meds I am taking her back to the DR today. I feel like there is an underlying problem that we need to get to the bottom of and your blog confirmed what I have been questioning.

Her mother has taken her to the primary, pulmonary specialist and they are going to have a sleep test done as well. She seems to only really cough at night while she is trying to sleep. My stepdaughter also lived in a house that had a really bad mold issue specifically in her room only. They have sinced moved but I can't help but think that being there has something to do with her cough??? Any suggestions or comments. I hate that she is constantly having to be at the doctors all the time. please email me at meghan316@hotmail.com

Several years ago I began to develop problems being able to swallow upon going to bed. I can breath perfectly fine, but so much mucus builds up in the back of my throat I cannot swallow or cough it up. It is terrifying since it makes me feel like I am choking. Test indicate I do not have sinusitis. I have tried allergy meds, nasal sprays, etc to no avail.

Any ideas??

My 21/2 year old has had a cough for the past 8 weeks. She went to the doctor twice before they realized she had a horrible ear infection. She still has the cough though, especially when she starts running around. She also wakes up with a fit of coughing during the night. We are planning to take her back to the doctor next week. What tests should we ask them to perform on her??

I have the exact same thing and when I do it, it looks like I have holes in my tonsils afterwards. It happens one a week and smells awful. From the research that I have done on it, it is actually more common than I originally thought.

It was scary at first to have these things coming out of my throat!! From what I read it can be a couple of things.

If you have had mono before your chances of this happening to you is higher.

It could possibly be build up of food but the most common response I got was that it is bacteria in the mouth and that it is very hard to get under control.

Do not use alchohol mouth wash because this makes it worse. Crest makes one that has no alchohol.

scrape your tounge, and try to brush and use mouth was as much as possible for two weeks and it will be better.

Things you eat can make it better or worse.

This is as much as I could find out and if anyone has anymore info please post....

White chunks, me too. It seems to come from in between the tonsils--that general area. The last post 5/8/08 seemed to make sense. Perhaps it is a combination food & bacteria that gets caught and at some point is hard enough to cough out. It does seem to leave holes in the tonsils-very strange and it certainly smells when one comes out. Glad to know others get it as well.

Very strange on the holes in tonsils and white chunks. I have had it for a while now, but don't think I've ever had mono. I have noticed that depending on my diet does depend on the amount of it or not. I have had enlarged tonsils all my life and wondered if removing them would help the problem. My 12 year old son has it too, but not as frequently as I do.

ok, I had white bead like chunks I would cough up when I was young. Diagnosed with infected tonsils. The chunks were puss from infection. You'd better see an ENT right away.

I went to Vegas and was inhaling second hand smoke all night. I was wheezing and coughing all night and into the next days. It's been 3 weeks and I'm still getting this stabbing tickle which causes me to cough a few hard times then my eyes water. Then it's gone for a few more hours. Definitely worse at night when I'm lying down.

WOW, I have never heard any discussion on this tonsil white chunk topic and I have asked multiple Drs. my whole life, to no avail. I guess an ENT specialist is the key... Any out there that can comment? I have had persistent swollen tonsils, huge, for whole life but no one would take them out just on that basis. The white beads or chunks are obviously white blood cells fighting infection and then expelling through the gland...it used to freak me out and now I am starting to think that it is a good gland function, helping to fend off pollutants or foreign particles or allergens or something. It's not food, [though maybe we are allergic to a food]--it comes from within the gland...kind of like an abscess around a splinter trying to push the splinter out. I feel them growing larger before they come out and can sometimes push them out with pressure on the tonsil, but it is amazing to observe, and to think about how this once thought of as unnecessary gland works. In My dad's generation it was normal to have tonsils removed if there were a series of sore throats or strep /tonsilitis, but his actually grew back!
SO, if there is a body's need to grow back a gland after surgical removal, it must have an important function! Need expert advice Here, any ENT's or a Moderator who can get an answer? !

I get these funky things too and I am so embarrassed by the smell and wonder if my breath smells like that. I notice that I get them after I eat garlic. I have asthma and allergies, which may contribute too. I look back in my throat when I feel one coming up (they're hard) and I see them emerging from holes in my adenoids (I guess that's what they are).I've asked a doctor what these are and he had no idea. I wonder if I could cough one up and take it to a lab or the doctor to be analyzed. A friend of mine in junior high had these too and we used to laugh about how stinky they were. Gross!!! Is there a physician on WebMD who will tell us what these things are and what to do to prevent them from coming up? Thanks!

The white debris could likely be "tonsil stones" A build-up of food debris, bacteria, pus, etc in the crevasses and pits of the tonsils. They get worse during illness and are worked loose from vigorous couging. They also cause chronic halitosis. From what I understand, they are primarily a function of the physical structure of the tonsil surface, and likely an inherited trait.

Keeping the throat and back of the tongue cleaned twice daily with brushing is one of the best treatments. Yes, it wil cause you to gag a lot, but you get used to it. Stick your tongue all the way out and scrub/rinse until the white build-up is all gone as far back as you can see. Gargle with an anti-bacterial mouth wash, and stay well hydrated. (drink lots of water throughout the day.) I aslo know of some people who physically remove the stones with a dental tool, but I wouldn't recommend that at all. Sounds dangerous and unnecessary.

Wow!!!!! I have had those white chunks in my tonsil holes since I was twelve! I don't get them as much any more. I'm 28 and haven't had them as frequently as when I was living with my parents who had cats and lived in front of a corn field. I wonder if these were environmental triggers??? My husband just coughed one up today for the first time (he's 31). He's freaking out and got us here to web m.d. It never really caused me any alarm growing up. Just thought it was a disgusting, stinky, but normal bodily function...like stinky feet. I have also asked doctors about it and the answer I have gotten was that the white chunks were an expulsion of dead white blood cells leftover from fighting an infection. Weird...

I went to an ENT today and she said that these white nuggets are called tonsillar concretions and they form in the crypts of your tonsils. She made me feel much better when she said they are normal and that 1 in 4 people gets them. She said they are very easy to prevent by using a Waterpik every day and also gargling with tap water after every meal. Easy!!! Once I knew what these nasty things were called I googled for more info and found that Answers.com has a very good info about the issue. I have very deep crypts and would like to get them lasered shut, which is done with a local anesthetic (not painful like a tonsillectomy). I've had these since I was 12 too and had no Idea where they were coming from until a few years ago (I'm 36 not). Geez, I sure hope my breath hasn't smelled like these things all my life (like ass!!!!) Good luck to all of you! I'm buying a waterpik tomorrow!!!! Good riddens to you tonsil stones!

I just left the last long comment and I meant to say I'm 36 now instead of not. I also want to say that I can't believe how many doctors are not giving correct info about these things. I went to a PA and she knew exactly what they were. Oh, and they are caused by food and bacteria like someone said on here.

I just used a waterpik to get rid of mine...it makes you gag and BE SURE TO SPIT OUT THE WATER!! or you'll swallow it and that's gross. I have really awful allergies and currently have a sore throat. Could that be a cause?

The person who had the water pik idea is right on the money. I'm friends with a CNP and she said the exact same thing a couple days ago BEFORE i even read this posting. I have had the chunks since I can remember and I'm now almost 29. They seem to be worse at times (usually when I've been really busy and don't use mouth wash and floss as often as I should). But occur for no apparent reason some times. I have been informed that they ARE cause by food particles, bacteria, and glandular processes. It's no different than if something get's stuck in between a tooth and not removed. The plaque (bacteria) will begin to decay the food and if you've ever noticed, plaque has the same texture as these chunks just not in such large quantities. It is best to use succralose free mouth wash and keep up on your oral hygene. The laser surgery is quite common to close up the 'crypts'. SOME OF THE DOCTORS OUT THERE NEED TO GO TO THEIR CONTINUING EDUCATION!!!! It's not rocket science here people- learn what your practicing before you misdiagnose your patients!

I also get these tonsil stones. I just use a Q-tip and GENTLY apply pressure around the hole - it pushes the stones rite out. Much cheaper than a dental tool =)

I've also had these tonsil stones since I was about 14 or 15 yrs old. Back then I went to an ear, nose and throat specialist who removed the stones for me and suggested I use a waterpik. I still get them now - 25 yrs later. If I had known that, I would have tried to get my tonsils removed rather than deal with the stones my whole life. A waterpik helped (only somewhat) back in my teens but now I have problems here and there when my sinuses flare up. I know this will sound weird but I use a plastic fork to knock them off my tonsils. I break off all the tines of the fork except for one and use that last one as my 'dental instrument'. MUCH cheaper than buying one of those things. It's not dangerous or unnecessary as anyone who knows what those things smell like will know. It's the closest thing I could find similar to what the doctor used on me years ago. To me the stones seem to form both on the outside of the tonsils and are expelled from within the tonsil itself. The latter are the worst to get rid of - that's what I need my fork for. Weird, I know, but it works. Use a flashlight to see and try to spit it out - nasty little things to swallow. Not fun to do but effective.

Thank you for talking about these disguisting particles in my throat. I never realized what they were. I have always been so afraid that something was wrong with me. Just recently though I had blood with them also, figured I would see how serious it is before I go to the doctor.

Yeah, I just removed about 6 of them tonight alone. Ive been having major sinus congestion for the past couple days due to allerigies. I used my toothbrush to knock off these stones and then cough them out, lots of blood came out this time as well, that was a bit unusual.

I am SOOO glad to have found other people with these white globs. I have had them for as long as I can remember (when I was a kid, I thought it was part of my brain - active imagination). I would get them off and on, but here for the last 3 weeks it has been horrible. I spit out 7-10 every day, and they are getting bigger and bigger. My throat has been a little sore, and I have noticed little bits of blood with them. I finally decided to look it up because my husband commented on my breath. I will try some of these suggestions and hopefully have some success. The only thing that has worked for me is while brusing my teeth, I turn the brush upwards and brush the roof of my mouth, all the way back into the soft palate. I gag of course, but it gets them out. Thanks for the suggestions.

The most common terms for the 'white chunks' are 'tonsilloths', 'tonsil stones' or 'tonsil rocks'

I have had the most luck finding information about them using 'tonsilloths' though.

I'm so glad I've found this too. My husband has had them, my mom, my brother and myself. One time I pushed on the back/side of my throat above my tonsils and about 6came out. It must be a place where your sinuses drain?? And they've been in my tonsils to. I've heard alot of people having them. Whew!!!They do stink.

I'm sooooo glad 2 read about everyone how had info on the white chunks by their tonsils, I have the same thing time to time and when i went to the doctor she told me that all people have crypts but that some people's are bigger than others and that depending on the size and angle little bits of food can get trapped in there and the reson they're white is because your white bood cells are attacking the food. Soooo no need worry my friends my doc all said to avoid this little problem just try and stay away from foods that break down and could get caught in the crypts (ie popcorn peanuts) well hope this was a little helpful! :) ~CNZ~

yep...nice to know I'm not the only one...however, after reading all these posts about being sick all the time and hacking up stuff I'm wondering how many of you are overweight?...I mean, when was the last time you heard of some supermodel or major actress having any kind of problems?...it's usually the big, fat people, it's VERY RARELY that someone thin and gorgeous has some sort of health problem like this...think I'm wrong?...than why is the MAJORITY of these postings "anonymous"?...I think it's because the MAJORITY of you are big, fat lard asses...I say this because that's what I have become, I have gained 40 pounds, maybe more, in the last year and should actually be 70 pounds less than what I should be, and almost a 100 pounds than what I would like to be, I have been fat my entire life but than lost a lot of weight when I was a kid by doing just, what, yep, exercising and not eating as much, so I know what you people are doing, it's called DENIAL, it's 500 lbs people saying "I don't eat a lot, I eat normal" than they drink diet soda or water thinking that's going to counteract the multiple supersize meals or the entire large pizza at midnight, I KNOW, I been there, done that, still doing that actually but I'm not in denial, I'm just having a hard time changing things...so I know what it's like, but I mention overweight because that's what I am now and am having the same, exact problems that it seems everyone else is having, I'm just wondering if weight has anything to do with it???

Hi guys,
I had the problem years ago and couldn't seem to get anyone to help me out. I simply stopped eating so much dairy, took some vitamin suppliments, drank 2 litres of water a day and exercised. I believe it is simply congestion in and blockages in your body's natural waist disposal system. Get active and healthy.
Suggestion:...Walk everyday, take a multivitamin, Flaxseed oil, coenzyme Q10..Magnesium and calcium at night.for good sleep....and eat grain breads and vegies daily...you'll not only fix your white lumps but also you heart and attitude....Try it..it works....

has anyone rec'd a greenish much smaller almost like debris from their tonsils. I have had the "white chunks" for years. Started in the left tonsil only, I would remove the white chunks with pressure. Then my right tonsil began to have them as well and the white chunks in the left became rare. More often than white chunks I now get small greenish pieces in the left and still only the white chunks in the right?????

I went to the doc yesterday with a sore throat and voila...he found "white chunks" imbedded in my tonsils. They are called tonsiliths and are due to impacted food and bacteria that get stuck in the tonsils. He got them out with a long cotton swab and said I could to the same thing at home. They're very common, not dangerous and more annoying than anything because they just stink as you all know. I was having a sore throat on one side and he told me this is common when a tonsilith gets stuck. If you have a good gag reflex you can get them out. There is no "cure" because it's just something that happens. He told me that the body will normally extract them itself (i.e., coughing them up or we swallow them without knowing). The good news is that they're not dangerous, just yucky.

I am eliminating wheat and dairy from my diet, which is already making me physically feel so much better and...I'm hoping this will also help with the tonsiiths!

The "holes" that are collecting food particles, bacteria etc. are called tonsillar crypts and is a pretty common anatomical occurrence when the tonsils atrophy (or shrink) causing these indentations that tend to collect food particles. I had this explained to me by an ENT years ago, and you can opt to have a laser procedure done to remove some of the extra tonsil tissue that may help prevent this altogether. It is done in the ENT office and is a minor procedure, not at all like a tonsillectomy. Tonsil tissue can grow back, tho. It is normal for the tonsils to atrophy as we age, but often they form these crypts where debris gets stuck when food passes by, then kind of ferments (gross I know). Anyway, frequent gargling is recommended, and some people use a Q-tip to gently push it out. If there is blood you could be pushing too hard, or the tissue area could be irritated from another reason. I'd recommend seeing an ENT if it's really bothersome. Hope this helps someone.

I also have tonsil stones. After removing the stones (as with a popsickle stick)I then use a Water Pik to flush out the area. It does seem to help somewhat, although it is not a permanent cure. But it is better than ignoring the problem and being offensive to others! Try using salt, hydrogen peroxide, or mouthwash mixed with the water for a clean taste and feeling!

This morning, I'd coughed up a 500-1000g one and came right to the computer.

I have GERD, weak LES (lets food come back up). I consume tons of dairy and will back some of that off.

Thanks for the tips on cleaning, etc. I will make an appt with my gastro and see if he thinks I should see an ENT as well. Partly for the stones and partly just to make sure I'm not coming down with Barrett's.

Does anyone know which foods or types of foods cause the white stuff in the crypts (pockets) of your tonsils? I just recently noticed mine and was quite taken aback and got a little concerned. However, after doing research I found that it is indeed a common complaint. However, I havent noticed (nor has my fiance) mentioned me having bad breath--I also floss daily and brush twice a day and brush my tongue. Any helpful / relevant info that anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for posting your stories about the white chunks on here. Now I know what these nasty lumps are and I got a good laugh as well :D

I'm 16 and I've always had very large tonsils. About a year or two ago, I noticed that they had pits or holes in them. At the same time, I would cough up one of these offending white chunks, not knowing it was related. I'd just feel something caught in my throat, and I make it come up by opening and closing my throat. Since it seemed to originate in my throat, I assumed it was a speck of food coming up or something. Mine always remind me of a big lump of plaque that gets left between your teeth, and they tend to be about the size of a baby tooth. Tonight, I coughed up 2 while brushing my teeth, and when I looked in the mirror, I saw a third one attached to the front of my tonsil!! So I finally made the connection and started researching what the crap was wrong with me. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has these..

The white chunks are likely to be halitosis (food particles stuck in the throat/tonsil area). I first learned the term in my Biology class and later heard it again at my dentist office. It is a common issue that can be embarrassing; causing bad breath, pieces coming out when sneezing, coughing, etc. Good ways to dissolve and loosen these are with warm (not hot-don't want to hurt your throat!) salt water. In a regular glass of lukewarm tap water mix in a pinch of salt. Place small amount in your mouth (about 1 tablespoon), slightly tilt head back and proceed to gargle. This will dislodge and/or dissolve the existing annoyances. To help prevent future ones, according to my dentist, floss regularly especially before bedtime (this solves a host of other bad breath issues like bacteria growth as well). Also, gargling 2 or more times a week with the salt water mixture or a non-alcoholic mouth rinse helps prevent recurrence.

Off topic of the initial blog but wanted to add that I have had the white spots for 5yrs or so and found that eating yogurt when they show up helps them go away. Whether its the bacteria in the yogurt or the fact that the yogurt is gooey and the tonsilloths(sp?) stick to it and gets swallowed I don't know. I'm an engineer not a doctor!

I have big hands though and have trouble getting tools long enough to be playing around in my throat.

This is a message to those with kids and chronic night time coughs. I can't remember what the medicine is called but your doctor should know what I'm talking about. My daughter had this for weeks and they couldn't find anything, so they put her on a medicine (a steroid or antibiotic) that she took 5 days on 5 days off, then 5 days on. It solved the problem.
Hope this helps, it helped my daughter.

I get these too,but I'm thinking they're more directly linked to soda than anything. Use to drink LOTS of Dr Pepper in the military (after I got back from Iraq - which is better than getting drunk all the time IMO), but then I started noticing these "white chunks" we all are talking about and I use to get them all the time.

So since I drastically cut down on drinking soda (thanks to Acid Reflux) I rarely notice them anymore, in fact I really only notice them when I've had about 3-4 glasses of soda in a day or roughly 2 a day over a 3-4 days; I treat this as a warning sign and stop drinking them.

I'm wondering if they are more related to either the HFCS in the sodas &/or the fact that when sugar is mixed with human saliva that it turns into acid in the mouth (hence when your grandparents use to say that eating sugar products will "rot your teeth").

Is anyone else noticing this trend or may have seen another trend when getting these "white chunks?"

hey guys thanks for your comments. a lot of you have helped so many of us who suffer from these white chunks. i'm seeing more than ever before. the fact that there were so big sort of frightened me. that means they were sitting in my tonsils for a while. yes they make your breath smell really horrific.

they are called tonsil stones or tonsilitis. i'm told there is no cure for them. i was also told that the tonsils are going their job and fighting off a BACTERIA or a VIRUS in the body. that is why they get enlarged from time to time.
the tonsils sometimes form these pockets and collects the bacteria coming from your body, and they secrete what it collects. the waste; those little chuncks. they smell like waste too!

for me, i didn't get them until after i started dating new people, about 5 years ago. maybe i picked up a foreign bacteria from kissing and my body has been fighting through my lymph nodes, tonsils and adenoids.

this summer after i dated two guys, i've seen an increase in the stones and the coughing. i could not figure out why.

also, when my stress is very high is see an increase in the stones and the coughing. so when i'm working and in a stress environment, i get that stabbing tickle in the back of my throat and begin to cough, and can't stop. a stone usually comes out and i can breath. it's embarrassing, i know.

my diet didn't include meat and dairy, but i'm eating some meat, dairy and sugars again. i also drank soda, and loved it. the stones increase when i drink soda and eat sugar. not much for dairy, except for cheeses.

i'm tired of them. when i have a yeast infection, i've noticed that a film forms over my teeth, even a few hours after i've brushed. by early evening, my teeth are covered with this plaque as if i hadn't brushed all day. that's a clue for me to go see the doctor or an exam, including the OB-GYN, it seems like i have an overgrowth of yeast and bacteria in my system.

folks, check your hair for breakage, your eyes for clearness and your nails for clearness, brittleness, or curves. these are all the first indications of illness in the body.

my tonsils have now changed shapes and the left one looks like a pocket. i can't believe a water pik is enough, i will continue to get new information. thanks for all the information folks, you are not alone.
peace and good breath!

I am 31 and I went through a endoscopy exam just to find out everything was A OK but was worried about these chunks. I am so grateful that other people have experieced them and I wasn't going looney. I will try the salt and water gargle and staying away from dairy helps. since it cut back on the mucus. I too wake up with mucus backed up in my thoat and usually I have the white chunks.

Just an FYI to everyone with the tonsiliths... Dairy does NOT help AT ALL. My mom and I get them whenever we eat dairy... we're both allergic to dairy. Dairy also contributes to sinus infections, IBS and many other digestive issues. Just a word to the wise... my dad always says, "Do you know of any other mammals that drink milk past infancy? The white chunks are called tonsilliths. They are pieces of food particles and bacteria that have lodged in the tonsils and have come loose. I have used a cuetip to clean the chunkies out. I also have obstructive sleep apnea from enlarged tonsils and have fought the insurance company to cover surgery to remove tonsils and reshape the uvula. You can have insurance cover the surgery if it is medically necessary. It all depends on how your doctor and specialist word your diagnosis and if they appeal the denial. Good luck all!!!! The cough I have had for a month seemed to start with a virus, and the white/yellow chunks that everyone here has been talking about. After a few weeks of related symptoms, I have just been left with the intermittent cough, and a few backups of mucous, particularly at night. After trying every type of cough medicine, plus an Advair inhaler, I think the answer is a good warm saltwater gargle at night, smaller meals and eating at least two hours before bedtime. Does this seem right? All responses are appreciated.

I have had a cough for years that only happens in Dec/Jan and continues for 2 to 3 months. It usually starts out as a cold or another infection, but after the initial infection clears up the cough lingers. The cough goes on for months and seems to be getting worse and longer every year. I am 49 and I ahve had the cough seasonally every year for at least 20 years. I have visited a pulmonologist and had all kinds of breathing test done. She says I have great lungs and it is not the problem. I visited an allergist and he thinks it is reflux. It seems strange to me because it always comes in Winter only. If it was reflux, it seems I would have this problem all year. If anyone knows the answer or has a suggestion, please contact me, cainharris@mindspring.com

She is doing the same thing everyone of you have described. She drinks alot of milk. I am so glad I got on here and read these comments. I feel better about it now and I can't wait to tell her. By the way she is not at all overweight so that has nothing to do with it.
