Hold Your Wee for a Wii - Water Intoxication Death
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

In September, I posted a Blog called "Dangerous Games", about the risky behaviors of teenagers. In the Blog, I mentioned water intoxication as a potentially dangerous activity. Now, in Sacramento last week, a young mother of three died from drinking excessive amounts of water in a radio contest. She was trying to win a Wii for her family. The goal of the contest was to drink bottles and bottles of water and to see how long you can hold out before urinating. The winner would take home the Wii by not going to wee.

Mrs. Strange did not win the contest (she came in second), but she lost her life. Shortly after the contest, she collapsed in her home and died of hyponatremia, a fatal electrolyte imbalance where the body is critically low in salt. A husband lost his wife; her three children, including a one year old, lost their mother. Today, it was announced that the radio show, the DJs, and eight other staff members lost their jobs over this tragic incident, proving once again that it is not just teenagers that play dangerous games.

Just this month, several members of a Chico State fraternity were sentenced in the tragic death of a young student pledge who also died of water intoxication by drinking excessively from a five gallon jug and then being forced to exercise. What made this incident a bit different was the illegal hazing that was involved. Mrs. Strange signed a waiver for the contest, probably unaware of the risks. During this aired contest, a local nurse called the radio station to warn them, but to no avail. Even the DJs themselves openly (albeit, briefly) discussed the possible risks before the contest began. I don't listen to that station, nor did I hear the show, but I would have driven down there to try and stop it had I known.

When I was an 18-year-old (stupid) college freshman, I played a dangerous game called Water Poker. For each hand that we would lose, we had to drink a small cup of water. As the evening progressed, we all teetered on the edge of hyponatremia. I still remember that night; staggering to the bathroom, disoriented and sick. This could have happened to me or one my friends. We didn't know the dangerous game we were playing. As little as a half-gallon of water (two quarts) in a single setting has the potential of killing you.

When you drink huge amounts of water, you flush out sodium, potassium, and other essential electrolytes. Kidneys overload. Cell membranes rupture from osmotic pressure. The brain swells with edema. Headaches, nausea, disorientation, and dizziness occur, followed by seizures and coma. Death can soon follow.

What next? Will radio stations offer "chicken" contests? Perhaps two drivers head for each other at high speed. The loser is the one the swerves out of the way. Or, how about who can hang the out a twentieth story window without falling? Of course, there are always drinking contests. The winner gets a liver transplant.

Water is the elixir of life. Humans are predominantly bags of salt water, held in by skin and connective tissue. Without water, we die. Without water, our toilets would not work, and our personal hygiene would be in serious jeopardy.

When water is abused or disrespected, it can kill. Water can end your life through drowning. Water can carry us away on a rip tide or float us out to sea on a raft. On a road, water becomes a major hazard to safe driving. When boiled, it can scald our skin. When frozen as an icicle, it can put your eye out. When ingested in excess, water can end a life and create unbelievable sadness.

Without water, we could not cry for the endless victims of Dangerous Games.

I always shudder when they show the contests of people eating so many pies, hot dogs, etc..not only does it reek of gluttony, but it's a waste of food, not to mention the effect on the digestive tract.
There have been recent deaths with people running marathons etc., and those resulted with over-
hydrating one's self beforehand. But having a contest to "Hold your Wee for a Wii"???I can only wonder what research was done before doing this as a contestant..and before sponsoring it.
I would hope such contests are eliminated in the future.
Thank you for the article..

Thanks for the article. I really think the human race is losing intelligence over time. I learened about water intoxication death when I was in school. The fact that adults will do something like this just for a video game is getting ridiculous. Whatever happened to playing board games or playing outside? Why do children and adults need to have the latest video games all the time? I just remember when we were younger (I am only 26) that our nintendo was only to be used when it was raining outside or it was to cold to play outside. Now children seem to be playing video games and computer games all day long (including playing them in restaurants). The fact that parents are going along with these contests just blows my mind. I see college students or even high school students doing it. I hope the radio DJ's have learned a big lesson.

an 8 member staff, djs, managers, etc., and no one was a aware or bothered to look into the risks of of water intoxication?? Like Death. I'm not a doctor, but that is basic info...I'm shocked that anyone allowed this water drinking contest to proceed...all should be held accountable...mistakes are made all the time, but mistakes that result in loss of life on a radio show, a dumb contest?!?...that is outrageous!! I pray for that family, her kids, her friends...

Perhaps our national morning radio panderers and scatologists will learn from this tragic death. Screaming for attention is the natural realm of the infant, not of the media would-be grown-up. And how do the starving and the undernourished of the world view the pitiful self-indulgence of mentioned contest over-eaters?

THIS SOCIETY IS JUST SICK... HOW ABOUT A CONTEST,,,SEND THEM OVER TO A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY, AND STARVE THEM FOR 2 WEEKS...MAYBE THEY WOULD COME BACK, APPRECIATIVE OF OUR LIFE STYLE HERE....THAT WOULD BE A CONTEST WORTH WHILE... THESE YOUNG PEOPLE ARE FAT, OVERINDULGED WITH FOOD, DRINK, DRUGS. AND THEY WOULD FOLLOW THE CROWD DOWN TO THE DEATH.. HOW SICK.. YET THEY FORGET THERE IS A GOD, TO WORSHIP AND GIVE THANKS FOR EVERY GIFT WE HAVE. SOME DAY THEY WILL, ( GIVE THANKS) WHEN THERE IS NO WATER OR FOOD.... GOD HAVE MERCY

how much did she drink? arent we supposed to drink 64ozs a day?

Blogger Rod Moser_PA_PhD said...

How much did she drink? It is estimated that she drank about two GALLONS in a very short period of time (as little as two quarts can cause water intoxication).

The sad thing is that the DJs KNEW that this was a DANGEROUS GAME. A nurse even called the station to warn them. Their response? "We know it's dangerous, but she signed a waiver...."

There really is some shared responsibility here. This ADULT woman willingly participated in a DANGEROUS GAME for a prize. The radio station team (all of them have been fired, incidentally) willingly promoted a DANGEROUS GAME.

I think its sad that this women died and her family lost a wife and a mom. Yes maybe the radio station could have made each contestant read about the possible dangers and side effects of what they were doing (assuming they gave the contestants no info at all). But she was still an adult who willilingly participated in this contest.

Hey Rod,
Great article am quite sad to hear that this happened. I just wanted to say that being a male in my early 20's (22) I have never heard of water intoxication in my life. I had known that holding your pee was bad for you and potentially harmful to your bladder, but not drinking excessive amounts of water can kill you. I do not come from a poorer area that wouldnt teach about potential health dangers either, I just think that no one had ever discussed it before even when I was in school. I can see now the serious risk of basically flushing your system out rapidly. The strange thing is, there are diets on the market these days for "Detoxification" or "Cleansing" that require you to constantly drink water all day long, I wonder if that is going to harm any more unsuspecting people who want to get healthy and end up dead too.
Just a thought

It's healthy to drink water all day long, but it has to be spread out. I drink at lest 50 oz of water a day and I drank even more when I was pregnant. I just wouldn't gulp an excessive amount down and then on top of it hold it in. I have heard of water intoxication before but I didn't realize that it only takes two quarts of water, I thought you would have to drink several gallons of water before there would be such a serious problem. A few months ago I entered a contest and won a PS2, the difference is that I only had to post a cute picture of my smiling daughter to enter. I agree that it is ridiculouse to put yourself in danger to win a Nintendo WII. I don't think that very many people realized the danger. It is so sad that this happend. She was a loving mom who wanted to make her kids happy. I'm sure that because the contest was on the radio she felt safe, as compared to some idiot daring her. If I had heard about this contest on the radio I would have thought that it was stupid, but It wouldn't have crossed my mind that someone would die.

The people who came up with that contest must have been so very ignorant. I'm an 18 year old, and even *I* know that the risk of water intoxication in such a game is extremely high and that it was very, very dangerous.

I'm going to have to admit, before this story came to light and I heard about it in the news, I did not know it was possible to die from drinking too much water at once. I especially never have thought about it from a teen's perspective, where overconsumption of alcohol is the major threat. While this woman signed a waiver, I highly doubt she understood the implications of her actions. How many waivers do each of us sign each day? I doubt she thought death would be a risk. I think it was the responsibility of the radio station to explore the risks before embarking on such a contest, and should have stopped immediately after the nurse called in with the warning. This is a tragic loss, especially for the woman's family, and I guarantee the staff of the radio station will feel the guilt of this for the rest of their lives.

When I heard about the incident, it made me think of another one that happened in Utah. Of an adopted girl who was being punished with water therapy, and died. She was forced my her adopted parents to drink a gallon of water because she was being bad. She died soon after consumption. It doesn't matter who, what, where, when, why and how. The fact is, large consumption of water is dangerous, and I don't think that many people know about this. I really didn't know anything about it until I heard about the little girl that died from it. Really sad to say, but I don't think that we are very educated on what water intoxication really is and what it can do to you body. It really needs to be taught, because it is getting out of control.

I'm a retired nurse and what's so crazy about this story besides the obvious of course, in 25 years I never had a patient come in for a overdose of h20
However years ago I had cramps in my feet and a doctor asked me if I drank water I said "proudly "Oh yeaaaa-I have a bottle with me where ever I go I love water,he then did some examinations and electro's and cbc etc on me and called me a week later and said cut your water intake down as I could have gotten in trouble, the nicest thing was no more cramps in my feet apparently the skin around the area was very dry not allowing the hydration I needed through the skin and that's one reason your feet can cramp(many others also)
(well something like that )without going into a long long story that he did lol)
However,I'm here to tell you other co-workers which were doctors said he was a quack
not so!
thanks take care stay away from contest that can and did kill:

You know the station in Minneapolis that has all those contests, they have done some really crazy things. But if the dj teams got fired whot about the station managers that have to approve these things first. The only fools to blame are the ones that join in to get "something for free" there is a price forevery thing. What I think we need to question is common sense and maybe what they teach in school, like try starting health/nutrition sciences in middle school before they loose their senses. By the way Wii has some good games for cooking. And don't you think posting your daughters photo on the net could be a bit risky too?

It was asked how much did she
drink? I think it was one or two
gallons AT A SITTING. Sure, we are
supposed to drink one qt for every
fifty pounds we weigh....BUT we are
supposed to let it OUT as soon as
the urge hits and NOT hold it in !
That is the big difference. I had to take a sonogram a few months back and i had to drink just one
qt of water one hour before the
test withOUT peeing, and boy, it
was EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE. Soon
as the test ended the tech right
away told me to go pee. I cannot
even IMAGINE holding 2 qts without
peeing much less 1 or 2 GALLONS !
That is total insanity. Maybe i can
understand a teenager not knowing
the danger this causes, but a
person in their late 20's OUGHT to
know better! What are growing kids
taught nowadays? Knowing that too
much water without peeing can be
life threatening SHOULD be BASIC
KNOWLEDGE ! The radio people should
have researched this fact out first. People seem to be getting
dumber and dumber and.......

I have been drinking lots of water to aid in weight loss, and have been suffering from a horrible headache. Your blog helped me greatly! I had no idea you could have too much water. I consider myself an educated person, but was shocked to know this. I'm a 41-yr-old woman, weighing 200 lbs. and I WAS drinking 20 oz. when I woke up in the morning, and again before breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I was going to add bedtime, but I didn't want to spend all night running to the bathroom. Thanks again for the information - I'll spread the word!

Sorry, but what kind of person PUNISHES a child with drinking water as behaviour modification? I heard in the news article that they tied that poor girl down and made her drink the water, forced it down her throat.
That is sick. How could you even show your face in public and bother to defend the negligent actions of a pair of people who didn't have the common sense to check with their doctor?

I am a mother of six who use to be a registered nurse and often took care of people whose electrolytes were out of balance. Electrolyte imbalances can cause heart failure etc.. This can be caused by excessive water drinking. I hope that the people who started the contest did not know about water toxicity. I hope they will apologize publicly and start some kind of public fundraiser for this family who just lost their mother. She obviously cared greatly for her children. She must have had a very fun personality to enter a contest like this! I am sure that her children would gladly trade a Wii and all their electronic games for their mother!!! It is sad that something this simple could steal a mother from her children.

Just so everyone knows... you don't have to "hold it in" for this to cause problems. If you are exercising for an extended period of time (or out in the sun all day long) and only drinking water all day it can cause the same imbalance. I was involved in a 3-Day walk for breast cancer and the health officials at the walk URGED everyone to be sure to drink some sports drink (like Gatorade or Powerade) in between the water to avoid this water-poisoning.

So, just know, you don't have to "hold it" for the water intoxication to occur.

Ok... if drinking so much water flushes out electrolites and such... what if you drink a sports drink like gatorade or propel in large amounts? does it have the same effect as drinking strait water, or distilled water maybe??? just thinking because i drink a lot after working out but mostly sports drinks... thanks

I'm not a doctor or anything, but I would think that using sports drinks - which are designed for electrolyte and potassium replacement - would be better than drinking straight water after vigorous exercise.
That being said, I was shocked to hear about this contest - and it's horribly tragic results. I'm 36 and I've read a lot of comments that say 'what are kids being taught nowadays?' - and I'm here to tell you, I NEVER heard anything about water intoxication before this. I scares me, because my office is very dry and I'm there for 10 1/2 hours 4 nights a week - and (on average) I drink 2 Liters of liquid (usually 1 water and 1 juice or something 'flavored', but sometimes 2 L water). I'm concerned that one of these days I could do the same thing to myself. How would you know if you were getting 'intoxicated'? What are the symptoms? One night I drank 3 L of water while at work - I made myself sick, but I still didn't urinate much that night... I feel like this is information that you don't really see anywhere... can anyone answer my questions? Thanks

That is horribe for this woman to lose her life tryin to win something for her children on account of DJ's looking for public attention. I am a mother of 3 children myself and I am all they have, I can't imagine someone having to tell my children I drank myself to death with water. I do drink a large amount of water tho. It is all I drink daily. Every so often I will have a glass or 2 of decaf sweet tea, sprite, or decaf root beer. Is this bad? I don't know how much I consume a day. I have this mug cup thing I use. But I drink it thru out the day. I love to eat ice as well, so sometimes I'll drink the water faster to get to the ice. Can this harm me? Please let me know.

What I think is sad, is not that the woman died, nor the radio stations neglect of the possible dangers... but that our society has become so damn protective and cautious. Every day something else is bad for you. Don't eat this, don't drink that... only so much of these things or you'll die! Wtf. Let people LIVE damnit. What worth is a sheltered life.

I have been a victim of water intoxication myself. I was golfing on a 90 degree day and drinking a lot of water. I became disoriented and was brought to a hospital due to my behavior. I don't remember much from that until I woke up 2 days later in a hospital bed from a coma. I have low sodium levels because of medications I take and also from brain surgery. I now add 1 tsp of salt to my diet everyday so I can keep my sodium levels in a theraputic level.

Ok, I'm here now researching water intox because my wife thinks she has a kidney stone..and has been drinking way too much water for her body...trying to pass the stone. She has consumed well over 64 ounces throughout the day...maybe even twice that...now she's complaining about feeling like she may vomit...i know my question may not be answered right away, but in the future...if consumed by mistake...how would we get the nutrients back into the body? Do i need to get her to drink a bottle of Gatorade to get electrolytes back in, salt water? I think she's going to be o.k...but just curious.

The current medically recommended guidelines for drinking water is 1/2 your weight in ounces. If you weigh 128 lbs, that would be 64 oz per day. If you weigh 160 lb, that would be 80 oz. The medical community came to realize that a ballerina dancer (90-100 lbs) should not drink the same amount of water as a Summa wresler (350+ lbs) Of course you should not drink all of it at one sitting. Let us use common sense. It that totally absent in today's youth????
