Sinus Headaches for 2006?
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

There are many reasons for a headache during the holidays, but mine was due to sinusitis. Like many other folks, for as long as I can remember, I've had hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis. A couple of times a year, I get sinusitis, which usually causes a toothache, apparently located at the base of an upper incisor. I also get a feeling of pressure at my cheeks, and a sinus headache.

I've learned that sinusitis is caused by rhinitis, specifically swelling of the nasal mucosa at the areas deep in the nose where the sinuses normally drain. The fancy term for this area is the osteo-meatal complex, or OMC for short. Your doctor would need a fiberoptic scope to view this area, a $1000 instrument that only ENT docs have in their office. However, the symptoms of rhinosinusitis are distinct enough that viewing the OMCs is not necessary to confirm this very common disease before treating it.

When I've got an exacerbation of my allergic rhinosinusitis, I use Sinus Rinse twice-a-day, followed by a nasal decongestant, then a nasal corticosteroid spray. Washing out the nasal passages with salt water is a treatment used successfully for hundreds of years.

If you like metaphysics and alternative medicine, you can dribble a cup of salt water into each nostril from a $20 ceramic Neti pot. If you are rich, you can put the salt water in a $120 nebulizer and spend ten minutes sitting while it produces a salt water mist. All pharmacies carry a $15 bottle of saline nasal spray with preservatives, but it only has 4 ounces of salt water, not even enough to rinse out one side of your nose once. I've tried all of these over the years, but have happily settled on a plastic squeeze bottle that holds a cup of warm water. This Sinus Rinse bottle costs less than ten dollars, lasts for a year or more, and comes with packets of salt, the size of fake sugar packets.

I simply tear open a salt packet and pour it into the bottle. I then fill the bottle from the warm shower or the bathroom sink and shake it. Sometimes I've filled it with cold water and nuked it for 30 seconds in the microwave. I then lean over the sink and push the smooth black tip of the bottle against one nostril, then gently squeeze the bottle, sending the salt water through one side of my nose and out of the other side, washing away the gunk. I then repeat the squeeze on the other side.

If I was really poor, I would just buy the bottle and measure out a teaspoon of salt from a shaker or container of salt, but the Sinus Rinse packets don't cost much and are very convenient, especially since I travel a lot. If you don't mix the correct amount of salt with the water, it will sting your nose. If the water is too cold or too hot, it's also uncomfortable. The correct temperature and salt concentration makes the nasal lavage (rinse or douche) soothing, although the sight of snot is not appetizing. Just remember, if you don't wash this icky material -- mucus, pollens, smoke particles, and pus cells (neutrophils and eosinophils) out of your nose, you will unknowingly swallow it, up to a quart every day. (The concentrated hydrochloric acid in your stomach digests it quickly.)

I wait for more than 15 minutes after the Sinus Rinse (enough for the remainder of the salt water to drain away), and then use a long-acting nasal decongestant spray (like Afrin). The exact technique of using a nasal spray is very important, since the usual technique doesn't get the medication around the sinus drainage openings, where it is needed the most. If you haven't used the spray for more than 24 hours, check the level of fluid in the bottle and prime it by spraying it once into the room air. Ensure that it produced a nice plume of mist.

Stand next to your bed (or someone else's bed!). Look downwards. Insert the tip of the bottle about a half an inch into your nostril and then tilt it so that it is pointed towards the back of your neck (NOT towards your eyebrows). Squeeze it. Don't inhale while you are squeezing the bottle. Do the same for the other nostril. Now quickly lie down on your back with your head extending over the edge of the bed, and stay there for 3 minutes! This strange maneuver causes the solution to drain downwards to bathe your sinus openings (the OMC areas), which have become closed due to inflammation of the nasal mucus membranes.

If your doctor has also prescribed for you a nasal corticosteroid spray (like Flonase, Rhinocort, or many others), administer that spray a few minutes after the nasal decongestant spray, using the same technique.

The decongestant nasal spray will begin to work within a few minutes, but the corticosteroid spray takes several days of daily use to fully suppress your nasal inflammation (rhinitis).

Use the Sinus Rinse first because that removes all of the mucus in the nose, which would prevent the medications from getting to where they are needed (the OMC areas). Use the nasal decongestant spray before the nasal corticosteroid spray because the decongestant will quickly shrink the nasal passages, allowing better distribution of the corticosteroid solution thoughout the nasal cavity.

I'm aware of the old worry that the use of nasal decongestant sprays for more than 3 days may cause rebound nasal congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa or Afrin Addiction), so, I try not to use it for more than a week. By then, the nasal corticosteroid spray has reduced my nasal inflammation, preventing the rebound nasal congestion, and the original cause of the rhinosinusitis exacerbation is gone.

I noticed that a company is now selling online a new $30 "system" for Afrin Addiction. It works by slowly tapering (diluting) the daily dose of nasal decongestant. I prefer to use a nasal decongestant instead of an oral decongestant (like Sudafed), because of the many side-effects of oral decongestants (such as nervous system stimulation and increased blood pressure).

I have a question are their any drugs awaiting FDA approval that tie the improvement of asthma while at the same time addressing environmental allergies like pollen. It seems to be that when Asthma occurs it is triggered by some environmental change that congest or irritates the patient breathing which then leads to an asthmati reaction. Any thoughts here

My son is now 16 and has lived with asthma. I made several trips to the emergency room before the doctor told me I should get a nebulizer. I did not realize that you could purchase one for home use. It cost $7.60 after insurance! We learned how to use it and it was a God send several times! We tried several products before we found Singulair and it workes. He hasn't had an asthma attack for several years.

Hi, I have a question regarding the method of using the nasal spray(s)? Because in the article it says to lay on a bed with your head upside down immediatly after using the spray, to evenly distribute the medication. This sounds like a good idea, but I'm wondering if this would really apply to me?!

I had septoplasty / cobalation back in May 2005. (My septum was crooked and blocked most of the nasal airways, so I had a very hard time breathing). My doctor recently just said that my nasal passages have healed very nicely and I now have a really good opening in the passageways. I still have allergies, and that is why I'm on Flonase. So, like I said, would the procedure mentioned work for me, even though my passages are clear as it is?!

Thanks for any help in this matter!

I am really worried about the medications of many people use... thats the reason because show that theme to you... The Drugs like the FLONASE

the most important things about flonase

Flonase is a steroid. It prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation, is used to treat the nasal symptoms of allergies and other seasonal reactions.,may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Use Flonase spray exactly as directed by your doctor. Read the information insert included with your medication. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
To use the nasal spray:
Shake the bottle gently and then remove the dust cover,It is necessary to prime the pump into the air the first time it is used, or when you have not used it for a week or more. To prime the pump, hold the bottle with the nasal applicator pointing away from you and with your forefinger and middle finger on either side of the nasal applicator and your thumb underneath the bottle. Press down and release the pump three to four times until a fine spray appears. The pump is now ready to use,
Blow your nose to clear your nostrils,Close one nostril. Tilt your head forward slightly and, keeping the bottle upright, carefully insert the nasal applicator into the other nostril.,Start to breathe in through your nose, and while breathing in press firmly down once on the applicator to release the spray. Use your forefinger and middle finger to spray while supporting the base of the bottle with your thumb. Breathe gently inwards through the nostril. Breathe out through your mouth,
If a second spray is required in that nostril, repeat the above steps, Repeat the above steps in the other nostril.
Wipe the nasal applicator with a clean tissue and replace the dust cover, Do not use this bottle for more than 120 sprays even though the bottle is not completely empty.
Clean the nasal spray at least once a week. Remove the dust cover and then gently pull upwards to free the nasal applicator. Wash the applicator and dust cover under warm tap water. If the nasal applicator becomes blocked, let it soak in warm water. Do not try to unblock the nasal applicator by inserting a pin or other sharp object. Allow the pieces to dry at room temperature, then place the applicator and dust cover back on the bottle.
Do not use more of this medication than is prescribed for you. Never use more than two sprays in each nostril (200 mcg) per day. It may take a few weeks to see the effects of Flonase. Talk to your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse
Store Flonase at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

In the same calification we can find drugs like

the fioricet is a pain reliever and fever reducer.
is in a class of drugs called barbiturates that slow down your central nervous system (brain and nerve impulses) causing relaxation.
is believed to constrict dilated blood vessels that may contribute to tension headaches.
Together, acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine are used to relieve complex tension (muscle contraction) headaches although precisely how it works is unknown.
Fioricet may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Amoxicillin is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as pneumonia;
bronchitis; gonorrhea; and infections of the ears, nose, throat, urinary tract, and skin.
It is also used in combination with other medications to eliminate H. pylori, a bacteria
that causes ulcers. Amoxicillin is in a class of medications called penicillin-like
antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Antibiotics will not work for
colds, flu, and other viral infections.
Amoxicillin comes as a capsule, a tablet, a chewable tablet, a suspension (liquid), and
pediatric drops to take by mouth. It is usually taken every 12 hours (twice a day) or every
8 hours (three times a day) with or without food. To help you remember to take amoxicillin,
take it around the same time every day.

Vicodin is a pain killer most commonly seen as a white tablet with the name “Vicodin, is
most commonly prescribed for persons experiencing pain after surgery or intense
pain. It helps calm a person down and increases their ability to relax and forget about
painful ailments (which speeds up recovery)

I have allergies, and i am constantly sick from them. I occasionaly (about every 2 weeks) cough up pus balls. And they are most literally balls, not mucus or phlem. The source of the nasty balls is in the front of my throat, i have learned this as I felt one protruding, it felt like I couldn't swallow a small piece of food. I then "popped" it out with my index finger. It smelled very bad and was white/yellowish colored. What are they? How can I get rid of them?

I cough up the little white balls as well. My mom advised me to graze my finger across my tonsils to clean them off. When I did so, the white balls popped out of holes in my tonsils. I've managed to locate about 6 locations on my tonsils where they form. Should I continue to clean my tonsils out?

I have these "white balls" sometimes also and I have been told that it is because of having cryptic tonsils. My tonsils are very large and have holes all over them. At one time I could press on them and all over them those white balls would pop out and I would have to hurry up and spit them out. They were very smelly and gross. After I knew they were there I would periodically press on my tonsils so they wouldn't have a chance to form and that has seemed to help. From my experience if you continue to keep them pressed out they won't collect in there.

The little whitish colored balls are called Tonsil stones. They form from an interaction with trapped food particles and bacteria and interact with a sulfur-based material produced under the tongue...i googled it because i felt like i was the only one and yes, it is really difficult to find out information about them!

Those little white "balls" that smell and actually some form of bacteria from food deposits...and I don't think everyone is taking them..or "popping them off" their tonsils per say, but rather the back throat area along the side walls where the throat flesh is only contracted brielfy or exposed during a certain movement such as coughing, etc.

I stopped at Webmd to see if I could figure out why I can taste nothing but sulfur.
I found this blog! I learned a lot (mucus balls) but i still have questions, my tonsils were removed when i was 7, I am 33. I did however have a cold/sinus thing a two weeks ago. It was one of the worst ones i have had. I did nothing but sneeze and cough. I have not been coughing up anything since then, but tonight i did notice that my mucus is back to the wonderful lime green color.
This is worrying me only because i have an allergy to sulfur based meds. Sulfer itself does nothing but make my eyes water and i sneeze. After 12 hours of smelling and tasting nothing but sulfur, I am kind of worried/annoyed. Anyone have any input? Could i be experiencing what the one post said about food and sulfur based bacteria.

I have had those same "white balls" form in the back of my throat. I saw my ENT and was told that I have "Cryptic Tonsils". That's where the "balls" tend to form in those little(some large) holes in my tonsils. Like everyone else said...they come from food deposits that remain after a meal and eventually become those little nasty deposits in the back of your throat. I have a very nifty little tool that I use to remove them(I cut off the top of a straw at an angle and I use it to scoop them out). The only recommendation I received for treatment was a tonsillectomy, in which I will undergo in two weeks. It may be painful at my old age(29). But atleast I'll be able to get rid of that straw!! Good luck everyone! Go see your doctor!

I can't believe there are other people with the same throat problem! I've had these pus balls since I was very young. A throat specialist told me a term for it once and said i would grow out of it since she has never seen an adult with it. It did quit for a while but now it's back and I'm 29. I have been using cotton swabs to get those balls out of my tonsils. If I accidentally swallow them, I get sick to my stomach.

I too have this problem. My doctor called it cryptic tonsils and said unless I get sick regularly, I cant get my tonsils out... I really wanted to get them out because when I do get sick I feel like it harvests the bacteria in those holes, I am always sick atleast two weeks. I too occasionally use a q-tip to get the bacteria out, it really feels unnatural to have!! I always feel like I have bad breath because of that problem... Hopefully someone will come up with a way to get rid of it.

I read that a lot of dairy in your diet and mouth breathing can accelerate the formation of the tonsil stones (tonsillolith). I will never give up my skim milk and cheddar cheese and how and the heck do you control mouth vs nose breathing when you are sleeping? Anyway, I have used the straw method to extract the tonsil boogers but I find that just firmly pressing you finger over them seems to cause a mass evacuation of the stones. I know it's time when I either feel one in there or I get the sore throat feeling. Good luck and I hope you can find solice in knowing you are not alone.

You people need to think seriously about tonsillectomies. Forcing out the tonsil stones is risking infection, I did the same thing for years because my allergist said an adult tonsillectomy is very difficult. Five years later at age 46 I had the tonsils removed on a Thursday and was back to work on Monday. It is a "mucky" recovery but after all the healing is done you will be so happy. Quit whining and take charge of your health. Risking frequent infections is never a good idea, your brain is a close neighbor, it can be at risk too.

My ENT just told me i have cryptic tonsils as well. My boyfriend told me about two weeks ago that-he has noticed that i have recently developed bad breath. I immediately assumed it was my sinus issues (I have a cyst in my left sinus and advanced sinus disease--which was discovered after a six month never-ending sinus infection from hell)so i went to the ENT. To my suprise--- even though my sinus issues have not been ruled out, my ENT believes "cryptic tonsils" are to blame and suggested I gargle with hydrogen peroxide ( yuck!) until I can get my tonsils removed. Perhaps doing the same will help my fellow bloggers with their dreaded stinky white balls!

I have had tonsil stones for years and have found a few things that have helped. 1) I use a copper tongue scraper (it is not painful although scraper would make one think so) to help eliminate bacteria buildup from my tongue. The stones need the bacteria to grow. 2) I use the rounded handle end of an old toothbrush to push them out. I have had them come up larger than a hominy kernel, quite disgusting, and as small as a grain of rice. I've seen an ENT and was told they are harmless, although quite a nuisance. The options for treatment are laser tonsil resurfacing or a complete tonsillectomy. Hope that helps.

I have a tool that was given to me by my ENT to dig them out, he recommended a tonsillectomy also, but it seems to be too risky as I am on a blood thinner because of a previous pretty severe pulmonary embolism, so I don't know what I am going to do. It's nice to know that other people get these things too.

I too have suffered from these things for years and had no clue what they were except they hurt and stunk! I was too embarrassed to talk about them becasue I thought I was the only one that got them. They have gotten really bad over the last few monhts so I decided to search the web for what they could be. I only get them on my right tonsil, which is also the tonsil that has more problems and the one that is always more infected when I have strep or tonsilitis. I never thought I would find so many others with the same issue and an actual name for them. Thank you all very much for the information...I am making an appt with the doctor now!

I had my tonsils removed 5 years ago due to tonsil stones at age 27. Not fun but necessary. I'm wondering if anybody else has done this but still has the stones?! I do! We have more than one set of tonsils. We can only see the large set. When a tonsillectomy is done, are both sets removed? Could the smaller set be cryptic as well and develop tonsil stones? I have one stuck in my throat and it will not come out! I have been on 2 rounds of anitbotics from my regular MD and it has cleared my sinus infection but not the stone. I'm contacting my ENT next. Anybody else now having this problem too?

It seems to take me weeks to get over any kind of cold. Maybe there is a connection. Thank you everyone for your tips!!

I read everyone's replies and I can't help but think this "little" problem that the doctor's say are nothing may actually be a big deal. I too get tonsil stones (or whatever you want to call them), I read a couple of people say that they get sick to their stomach from them. I do too. I never felt them in my throat, but I would get a really bad sore throat when they were there. I would look in my throat to see if it was red and I would see the stones, I thought it was strep and would go to the doctor but by the time I would get there they were gone and so was the sore throat, but then the stomach problems would come. Maybe there is a connection??? Also, just something I thought about, when I was getting my teeth cleaned at the dentist they gave me a paper on how mouth bacteria can cause heart disease, has anyone done a study on this bacteria's effect on the heart. Maybe I am way off, but those little balls are pretty nasty and make me feel sick. I now know when I have a stomach issue or a sore throat it was probably because of having a stone.

Hey there - I am 25, and had my tonsils out about a year ago due to ridiculously large and frequent tonsil stones. I knew I had them, and was normally able to remove them myself (unlike tonsil friendly folks here, I used a sterilized butter knife). I finally got one I couldn't remove on my own - it caused throat pain, painful swallowing, etc. I found and went to an ENT, who removed it - it was the size of a GRAPE. He even said, "that's disgusting!" and he does that for a living. He also told me that my tonsils appeared to be in a state of constant low grade infection. He recommended immediate tonsillectomy. So if you want the surgery and your doctor is hesitant, make them remove your tonsil stones and then see what they say!

I started getting these tonsil stones when I was a teenager. I'm 21 now and they have gotten much bigger. I also get sick at my stomach if I swallow one. It's so gross. I always feel a lot better if I dig them out (and don't swallow them), BUT be careful. I got a huge canker sore in the back of my throat one time.

I was told that getting a tonsilectomy will not make the stone go away...they might not be noticable for a while but in the end they will return. The doctor said that when they removed the tonsils, they don't remove the tissue around them and because of this, the stones will start to grow on the walls of the throat as well as on the epiglotis (sp?). My mom, brother and sister, and I get them and each of us has seen a different doctor and after much research, each has come to the same conclusion that a tonsilectomy will do no good. Just thought I would let you all know.

Re: tonsil stones...I have found that using a syringe with warm salt water to "blast" your tonsils has been really effective. Lots of stones have come out when I do this. I didn't want to try the water pik - too much pressure I would think! Some people also "suction" them out with droppers or baby suction things. I haven't tried this yet. Also, scraping your tongue works well. I am also using a neti pot and I have had awesome results. I am no longer chronically congested - therefore, no mouth breathing at night, which was causing bacteria. I have been researching this a lot and have heard that getting your tonsils out is not always the solution and you can still get them! I recommend the syringe for sure.

I have also heard that dairy, wheat, etc can cause these stones for some people. I also think that the crypts fill up with a large stone and then it "breaks down" and comes out in smaller pieces. I would say not to use sharp objects or metal things! Before the syringe method, I was using q-tips, end of a toothbrush, etc. This is such a bizarre topic and I can't believe how many people experience this and feel disgusted by it. My boyfriend is like "how can someone so cute have such yucky breath?" lol. My breath is instantly better after using the syringe and removing them!

YEAH!! Hello fellow stinky throat ball people! I have these too! Only on one side. THIS is what I do, I always check the back of my throat when I brush my teeth. Once a day I take a q-tip soaked in peroxide and gently swab each tonsil. It has kept them away for several weeks at a time. When I notice the feeling of something stuck in the throat, or see one of those white spots, I use a peroxide soaked q-tip to gently push on the tonsil and it pops the stone right out. If anyone has the little flap in front of the tonsil, gentle run a q-tip behind the flap, I had what seemed like thousands of those stupid stink bombs behind the flap!! (by the way..the straw shovel is a FANTASTIC idea!!) I have also noticed that when I get a bad aftertaste in my mouth, I can find those suckers just by pressing on the tonsil!! YUCK! My breath is a lot fresher since I started using the peroxide rub... good luck to all with tonsil stones! They are awful!

So glad to see Im not the only one with this. I make sure my nails are cut short, then run my middle finger under cold water and scrape away. They pop out of the crypts in all different sizes. The big ones are the best! The little ones like to get lost in your mouth. Not only do they smell real bad, they taste even worse! Im 39 and have had them for years. Tonsils are swollen like golf balls, but the docs only want to remove them as a last resort.

I am a dental hygienist. Had never seen nor heard of this until a few months ago when examining a patient (teenager)what looked like pieces of cauliflower stuck all over both over-sized tonsils. Pretty disgusting. Patient seemed unaware with no symptoms. The parent was more concerned. Her tonsils were removed the next week. These stones are thought to be caused by bacteria, mucous from sinus drainage and sulfur deposits on the back of your tongue and some foods such as dairy. Using a tongue scraper, Listerine, Peroxyl rinse, Chlorhexidine rinse (prescription) may help. Also using a smooth surface like a mouth mirror to press against the tonsil arch and tonsils causes the stones to pop out rather than poking something into thse areas.

I coughed a couple of these "balls" up after a nasty cold. A week or so later I coughed up two more! Then painful canker sores developed that lasted two weeks! The doctor thought it was strep and put me on antibiotics. But I didnt have strep symptoms (fever, aches/pains, etc.). I thought maybe the "balls" had something to do with it. The other day I actually picked two more out of my tonsil! This has never happened before nor have I ever noticed the holes in the tonsils before. Is this due to a cold? Why does this develop?

Well as with everyone else here I also have the cysts. Im 36 and up until last year didnt really notice them. I had coughed up a few in the past but always thought it was a piece of food that got caught in my throat(Little did I know). My wife had always said I didnt have the freshest breath but I brush, floss and rinse at least twice a day and just thought she was over sensitive to it since no other GF had ever mentioned it.

What I do is use a Q-tip to press the cyst out. It helps if you work from the back forward, since like others have said some can be lodged in the back behind the tonsil. Ive been massaging the tonsils every night for 6 months now and have really noticed a reduction in their formation. The left side has virtually stopped producing them, or at least slowed quit a bit, while the right is half the size it had been.

The tongue scrapper is a good idea if the cause is bacteria and I'll have to start implimenting that as well. I, and my wife, feel like my breath has gotten better and hopfully with a routine I can keep them from coming back or at least minimize them.

Good luck eveyone

If you have sinus headaches, migraines, "Airplane Ears" cold, sinuses- preasure, also for my asthma. Sudafed is a type of decongestant I use.
I had to stop taking cortizone because it was ruining my bones.
(When steam from the shower is not enough.)
I do this thearapy:
You will need to boil water and pour into stable metal bowl or pot and cover your head with a towel and breath the hot steam. Set in a safe place so it does not tip over.. Near by have something to drink and tissues for wipping the sweat and blowing your nose. Have a hot drink like coffee or hot tea-or herbal tea is also good to sip while doing this..
My favorite is Berry or Raspberry Zinger tea. Alternating between hot and cold liquids also helps to drain mucus. If you have an infection you could use natural supplement-echinincea tincture or capsules with water-NOT JUICE- Twice a day (herbal remedy).
Do this the day before you get on plane, to clear mucus, or if severe don't fly at all, so that you don't get "Airplane Ear".

depending on the severity of your condition, there may be no need to dig things out or have a tonsilectomy. gargling with hot salt water(as hot as you can stand without burning yourself) has always done the trick for me - even if i have a very sore throat. my doc recommended i do it every day to keep the stuff at bay and it seems to work well. don't stick things in your throat, you'll make it worse.

I am a dental hygienist and have seen hundreds of patients with "tonsil stones". I have learned that it gets trapped in what we call the tonsillar pillar (the flap of tissue anterior to the tonsillar area). I don't think getting your tonsils out would completely eliminate the issue. I get them also by the way. The water pik or oral irrigator with 'Oxyfresh with Zinc'Mouthrinse is what we recommend for our stinky ball sufferers. Frequent use of peroxide can cause a secondary infection or thrush so I would not choose that rinse and alcohol based rinses like Listerine are dehydrating in nature and have been linked to precancerous lesions in smokers and drinkers. The oxyfresh with zinc! with a metal tongue scraper will eliminate bad breath. The zinc neutralizes the odors caused by the anaerobic bacteria. The water pik used on a comfortable setting acts like a siphen, it will actually suction the balls out safely. Good luck and don't you know if you want good oral advice ask your dental hygienist!!!!

Okay, so I feel much better now reading this...I am 25 and have been living with this condition "secretly" for about 9 years or so. I discovered it one day and it turned into a daily ritual of poking and prodding to see what happens. I do it subconsciously, too. I can't tell anyone about it, because nobody would understand. For years I have used things from q-tips, to toothticks, and fingers. And it always ends the same way...small stinky white-yellow-colored chunks that smell like cat breath and irk me. My main concern now is a small boil-like blistery thing on the side of my tonsil. Now my tonsils have always been larger than testicles, so this is totally normal. I have asthma, and have been getting sick very frequently throughout my lifetime. I am happy to know that now I may have found the reason why. But back to the bump: Can anyone tell me what this is? I think it's something that formed from constant flesh pushing and unnatural desire for the foreign "stones" as which they are called. Nothing helps. It does not hurt, but it's irritating to know that this bump is not going away. I was going to talk to a doctor, but I can probably find out what it is right here, and I'm doing it for free, haha. Any tips on how to remove this? It's fleshy and peach colored and feels as if its filled with fluid. Like I said, it doesn't hurt, and if I press on it, I don't feel anything.
Can anyone help me? Is this at all a concern that I should address? I am a hypochondriac and always dread the worst..but now I can level with other people who have this strange "secret" like me...
Thanks, hopefully someone has an answer!

Dr. told me what these smelly balls in the tonsils are. They are tonsilloliths or tonsil stones. Apparently they are a "normal" thing its just that not all people get them. There isn't any particular cause or cure. You can continue to dig them out if you want she said. But they'll keep coming back its from built up bacteria so I told her what if I gargle with listerine 2x day. She said it could help & to try it. Though I did notice the last post I read someone mentioned a toothpaste that really helped. Anyway, I was so relieved to find out there was nothing abnormal wrong, there's nothing that I'm doing to make them & probably not much to make them go away! Good luck!

Hello there!
Yeh, I used to get this and was always getting chest infections, tonsillitis etc. It was "normal" for me to get these 5-6 times a year. Very annoying. I spoke to my doctor who agreed to let me have the tonsillectomy operation. Since then I have not had any problems.

Tonsills are part of the body's (lymphatic) immune system. They are responsible for "catching" bacteria and other bugs which the body would need to fight. Lymph is a white milky type fluid which runs in capillaries all over the body. White blood cells are responsible for "phagocytosis" or killing bacteria/bugs like pac man. The tonsills are there to assist the body's immune defence system. Why tonsills turn cryptic, this I cannot answer, but I hope that the above information helps you understand. Kate the Vet Nurse.

Well, I'm not sure if this person checks this frequently, but the blistery pus thing is an abscess. I actually just read about while looking for this page. Here's the page.

I'm a bit of a hypochondriac too, so I'm sort of thinking about getting my tonsils removed to prevent this.

I've lived secretly with these stupid stones too. I just recently told my mother and my boyfriend about them and they looked at me like I was crazy. My boyfriend insisted that tonsils did not have folds in them. I'm glad this is more common than I thought.

I see that someone experienced the same issue I did. I too noticed these small yellow stones in my tonsils, and at times was successful at poking them out, while other times they were simply lodge to far in to get out. I finally went to an ENT and was told of the problem. It's been not quite two years and I am now experiencing the same issue. So although they advise one to get their tonsils removed, this problem can resurface.

The yellow balls are actually "Tonsilloliths" Lith meaning stone. Typically a tonsillectomy should take care of the problem..i.e., the tonsillar crypts are exposed after the ectomy so particulate matter doesn't get stuck and attract bacteria. The foul odor comes from sulphurous compounds produced by bacteria.

Hello!

I had continual strep throats for many years. I found my tonsils were catching the food particles, and bacteria as everyone here has been discussing, and developing those nasty stone like things. I finally got my tonsils out at 30. I have to tell you, they say tonsilectomy is a hard operation as you grow older...That is the understatement of the year! I wanted to die, I was in so much pain! I didn't want to swallow my own saliva, never mind anything else...even water. Anyway, I finally healed from that surgery and barely have had a real sore throat since! It was really worth the misery of that week or ten days. I have not seen a stone since, and feel since that bacteria cannot get trapped in the "craters" anymore, there is less chance of holding infection. Hope this helps, and until tonsilectomy, happy stone prying!

Hello, i had these white smelly balls from time to time. I noticed when they go away. This might work for other people.
2 things seem to cause the white balls in me. One is that i wear hats all the time and fail to wash them. They smell funny but not bad. That smell carries bacteria that i breath in all day.
two is that i forget to wash my pillow case and some times i take a bath before bed and sometimes i just wash my face. The sweat and drool seem to have the same smell as my hats do.
SO just to see what happens i washed all my hats and pillow cases and sheets every two to three days and i have not had these balls of smelly bacteria since.

I have had these tonsil stones since I was a child but I also grew up with constant sinus problems and respiratory infections. The only thing that I have found that has been helpful is making sure you brush your teeth (and include tongue and interior of the mouth) at least twice a day. Gargling certainly helps especially if you have a cold. But the biggest thing is treating the sinus problem.

I have been on a course of Flonase for about 8 months now and have not had any serious return of the stones, every now and then if I cough I might get a very tiny one. The Flonase is finally helping the chronic sinus problem which means I don't have the sore throats like I did either.

BTW, I've been doing a little reading hear and there and having the Tonsils removed is not always recommended.

I discovered tonsil stones in the past year or so and now am obsessed with getting them out of my tonsils as soon as they become visible -- multiple stones per tonsil each week.
The best methods I've found this far include brushing tonsil area with toothbrush (if you can do this without gagging) to loosen stones, tonsil massage using index finger or pinky directly on tonsils or stimulating tonsils externally (neck massage) to loosen stones, and an EYEDROPPER for suction. I haven't seen this recommendation anywhere, but it works better for me than any of the other techniques I've seen posted, so hope it is helpful to others with this problem.

I've had these stinky throat balls for over 6 years, and the only quality medical advice I received came from my uncle (who's a dermatologist - so he could have just made this up, but it makes sense). He said that if you've ever had a severe bronchial/respitory infection, scar tissue can build up in the back of the throat, where the bacteria grows and ultimately solidifies. A tonsillectomy might help, but it also might create more scar tissue, never relieving the problem permanantly. He basically said gargle with Hydrogen Peroxide, twice a day for two days, the minute you feel that scratchy feeling in your throat. If this helps and you can stand the inconveniece of doing it once a month, fine. If not, take your chances with surgery. Best of luck.

I have had tonsil stones since i was 12 years old. i am now 36. I never new what they were and thought i just had really messed up tonsils i was embarassed to open my mouth for the dentist or doctor. My tonsils look like the craters in the moon. Also i have developed a growth where one of the craters used to be. my doctor didn't seemed to worried about it. He said it can come from frequent throat infections as a child. does any one else have something like this? It resembles the flap that hangs between your tonsils just not as big. I thought it might be from all the years i been poking at these nasty tonsils. what do you think?

Finally after 12 years I find the answer to this condition. My doctor used to refer to this as "throat cheese" I know thats nasty sounding, but he said it was something that happens after your tonsils "rot out". He said I was too old for surgery at age 18. Anyway he said I'd just have to deal, so thats what I've done. That Dr. retired so I've seen a new one and never mentioned it because I was so embarassed. Now
I am relieved to know what it is. I get sick all the time from this, however I quit smoking and this helped some. I use a wet q-tip to massage and remove these, but I have to be careful because mine bleed easily and that makes me worrie about a serious infection developing. A saline nose spray is benificial as well. I hope this helps. I'm just glad I'm not alone in this.

oh my gosh, thank goodness i'm not alone. i'm a teenager and, well, as awkward as this time in my life is, i couldn't very well just ask anyone hey do you get these wierd smelly things in your throat? oh, you don't? ya, me neither. . . just asking. Man, going to the doctor was bad enough. I didn't dare ask about those foul balls. he said i have bronchitis which i believe is close to death but these things got worse and now that my death bed has gone away, my little white buddies seem to tag along like a plague! urgh, maybe one day they'll just up and die before i do.

I have had those tonsil boogers for years & no one has ever known what to do for me. I tend to cough them out. I went to the Dr. yesterday & found out I have an abscess (peritonsillar). It is on one side and guess what it is the side where the white smelly balls always are. What is more scarey is how close an abcess can be to your brain. Never put off things like this...

I have the little white boogers often too and it's nice to know I'm not the only one. I think I have one right now, but am not sure. I can usually see them, but this one is hiding and driving me batty. I leave for Spring Break in a few days and don't want to deal with it. Any ideas? Thanks.

Tonsil Stones! Finally - like the other million people on here I'm saying "I'M NOT ALONE." I have sinus problems, I discovered the yellow balls on the back of my throat and out of curiosity to get rid of them I pushed it out of my throat - gaging all the way! blood came too! yuck! I had atleast 3inches of backed up yellow foul smelling yellow crap from 1 tonsil! I thought it was my sinus'.

Solution: Brush your teeth, tongue and DO NOT USE PERIOXIDE PEOPLE! What the crap! Use Oxyfresh with Zinc mouth wash! Don't use your fingers to push them out - HELLO - BACTERIA ON YOUR HANDS - HELLO - THAT'S HOW YOU GOT THOSE STINKING THINGS IN THE FIRST PLACE!
Using a Q-Tip GENTLY dipped in Oxyfresh - Zinc mouth wash will help. Clean out your sinus afterwards for the best results. Either 1 - cover your face with hot water - for steam and breath in. or 2 - use a salt water treatment in your sinus - THIS HURTS AND IS NOT COMFORTABLE - BUT IT WORKS. Then check your tonsils again to see if it looks clear. brush teeth again, and scrap tongue, and rinse.

But, thanx to all of you wonderful..nasty...people who have the same problem, I can address this issue without dreading the worst! He has a very sensitive gag reflex though, so please wish me luck with this...the bad breath is getting to be an issue!

I ALSO GET TONSIL STONES. THEY DRIVE ME NUTS IF I EAT NUTS OR CRACKERS THEY MAKE IT WORSE. I USE A SMALL CROCHET HOOK THAT I STOLED FROM MY WIFE. MAKE SURE YOU FILE THE SHARP HOOK PART SO IT DOESNT GET CAUGHT ALSO USE A FLASHLIGHT, OR JUST GET YOUR TONSILS TAKEN OUT.

To everyone who is talking about the solid "tonsil stones", they are called TONSILLOLITHS.

They are caused by the mucous on your tonsils being trapped in your tonsil crypts (pockets in your tonsils, if you will). Normally, you would just swallow these, but for some unlucky souls, it gets trapped and, along with food, saliva and white blood cells, it forms, growing larger and larger; similar to a pearl.

NONBODY should try to remove them with an object (q-tip, toothpick, tweezers). Your tonsils are extremely sensitive and you risk:

- Damaging them
- Excessive bleeding
- Infection

Go see an ENT (Ear/Nose/Throat Dr.) for the best course of action.

Some people, after suffering for years, get their tonsils removed and never have this problem again (A very small number get them removed and still suffer, though.).

Also, there is a laser procedure that smoothes out the surface of the tonsils and makes the crypts lie flat so nothing (in theory) can 'grow' in them.

Hope that helps :)

I am SOOOOO glad I found this site, I had made an appointment with my docotr once again, I have been back and forth with throat irritaion and those :TONSILLOLITHS
"Tonsil Stones" I didn't have a clue, but they do smell terrible, lately I have had it go from one side to the other, I get them on both sides, and then I get sick, and I mean fever, chills, and congestion after. Not so smart I was using a golf tee to dig them out, but stopped after it would make things worse. Sometimes I can't get them out and it looks like my throat is seperating from my tonsil, with a huge gape, and white blotch marks. I never come up positive for Strep, and it is SOOOO Frustrating. Thank you for this blog, I have an appointment with a ENT specialist on Wed.

THANK GOD FOR YOU ALL!

Over the 12 years since I graduated from high school, I have gotten tonsil stones progressively larger and more often in both sides of my mouth. Additionally, as some of you mention, my tonsils seem to be deteriorating. Lately, pain and blood seem to be part of ejecting the stones.

I am so thankful for this blog. I have some new ideas to try and a name for these things (although I will say my favorite after reading all comments is "little bits of hell", which made me laugh uncontrolably for joy that I am not the only one that absolutely hates this condition.)

I have been told by one person that the white material is cime (spelling?), definition being given to me was 'the product that your mouth renders food into once mixed with saliva so that your stomach can work further digestion,' but I've never been able to find that. Whatever you call the white stuff that creates tonsilstones, it seems to jive with what you are all saying on the topic in regards to food, bacteria, and crypts.

I had those little white cauliflower shaped "things" all my life.... I came to look them up because my youngest son has them, my 17 year old daughter has them... my other two children had their tonsils and adnoids removed at a very young age. I think the "second set" of tonsils referred to earlier are the adnoids, and as far as I knew, they go away on their own as you get older, however, if you have your tonsils removed at a young age, they scrape the adnoids out as well. I finally had my tonsils removed at age 26. It was difficult, painful, took a week to recover, a little longer to completely heal... I've been complaining lately that since my tonsilectomy mucus collects on the back of my throat... which it does, but reading all this about the white crater rocks reminded me of how bad it used to be. You can reach back and push them out with a finger, or I used to constrict my throat muscles and they would pop out.. My son has a bad one tonight, I had him squeeze his tonsil, and he caughed it out and I heard it hit the plastic floor mat under my office chair.. when I looked in his throat, theres still some there... the tonsil is swollen and red around that crater. I'm going to take him to the doctor tomorrow... get it documented... most doctors want documentation of at least 4 episodes in a year to do a tonsillectomy...

I've had these nasty things for years. When I was little, the Dr would always look at my throat and determine that I had strep throat because of all the white spots. I wish I could get my Mother all those Co-pays back! I haven't tried the Q-tip suggestion as I have another way to deal with them. I hold a flashlight at the mirror so that the reflection of the light shines on my tonsils. Then I use a mini Eye-glass screwdriver to poke the yuck out. I have learned which "hole" to push in so that the stone comes out another hole. Just make sure that whatever instrument you use, clean it very well before and after your "home surgery."

Yay! Im not alone!

Ive been suffering from these horrible little guys for about a month now. It started with a really bad cold and a cough with stuff in my chest. I was so scared when I first saw them because (being the hypocondriac that I am) I thought I had tonsil cancer or something like that. Whenever I tell one of my friends they just look at me like Im crazy.

So, I decided to start picking them out. My tonsils of course got red, larger than normal, and began to bleed a little. Soon after I had my first "white ball extraction" session, my left ear got plugged up for about a week. It felt just like an ear infection. After that week I had another "intense session" and the plugged ear came back for another week!

AHHH! They are so annoying! Im a pretty outgoing person, but I cant STAND being nervous that my breath always stinks. HELP MEEE! What can I do or use to got rid of them without surgery??

Having finally discovered (quite by accident) that I had tonsil stones, I did more research and found a product called "Thera Breath" which can be found in most large drugstores. Use this to gargle with several times a day and you'll find yourself coughing up those nasty critters. Thera Breath contains no alcohol or saccharine.

My sister and I have had these nasty things since we were little kids... I am now 30 and she is 27. We always called them "seeds" as they resemble okra seeds to us.
Our pediatrician never knew what it was. I saw an ENT in 2005 who finally gave me a diagnosis. He said surgery would only be neccesary if I suffered from more than two severe infections per year.

I just discovered what they are too. I seriously think they have something to do with chronic fatigue I've had over several intervals in my life. There was a point when I was in college when I was so nauseated in the morning that I couldn't go to class. The breath issue has been more recent. I went to the doctor for (what I thought was) a sinus infection. The reason that I thought I had this was the taste in my mouth. It smelled like one of those little balls I found on my throat about a year ago. I got a z-pack then and I felt better (not nauseated all the time). I recently was on sulfamethoxazole and that did not help me feel better. I just looked at my girlfriend's tonsils and she has a little white cluster on one of hers too. I think this is a lot more common that anyone ever knew. She has "sinus problems" too. Now I wonder if that is really the problem...

I'm glad to finally know that I'm not the only one with these nasty things. I am 32 and have had them since I was 6 or 7. I often find myself pressing my tongue against my tonsills to check to see if I have any tonsill stones and to pop them out. I've noticed through the years that I often get them right after eating things like nuts or bread, also popcorn. They are very annoying but I have grown accustomed to them since I have had them for so long. I am going to try the OxyFresh with Zinc mouthrinse to help fight bad breath. I also notice before and after I have them my throat and ear itches. Good luck to all, maybe they'll find a cure for all of us soon, other than a tonsillectomy.

Oh, my! I'm 34 and I have just finished reading everyone's comments on this subject and have laughed my head off, or for relevance of the subject, laughed out a tonsill stone! I popped one out tonight, as a matter of fact, and got on WebMD to find out more about them. I was told what they were awhile back, but am still frustrated by the annoying "stuck food" feeling and "stinky smell". My old boss thought I was crazy when I told her about them because she thought a former employee was lying when he said he was sick from something getting stuck in a hole in the back of his mouth. My holes (flaps) look like fish gills.
I'm also very conscious about my breath and get obsessed with getting the S.I.Y.T. (from above comment-love it!) out! I have been using the sharp end of an "orange stick" (for nails) to dig them out...not really good. I'm going to try the OxyFresh, tongue scrapper, and eyedropper...that seems a little safer. Also, I'm not a religious flosser, but as I'm sure the dental hygenists can attest, flossing can help eliminate unwanted bacteria. Sometimes when I floss my molars I get little food particles (or probably more like bacteria) out that have that same nasty smell. Ya'll try flossing every night, if you're not already. Good luck and thanks for making me laugh...your fellow stinky ball picker.

I'LL DO ANYTHING (xcept surgery) TO GET RID OF THESE THINGS!!!! I've been (with much guilt) SNEAKING AND STEALING handfuls of those long wooden qtips from my dr.'s office for years b/c the standard qtips are too short to reach my tonsils!!! i use the "the dr. will be in soon" time to search through the drawers so i can steal an ENTIRE BAG! but darnit!i can NEVER find a whole bag!! so i settle for a handful! over the years i've tried bobby pins (this tool works if you have little holes)-i'd(carefully)stick the tip of the bobby pin in the lower hole to jiggle the stone out from the upper hole. or vise-versa. this is not recmmded for beggnners. i've been excising these little devils for years now but unfortunantly i can't keep up with the growing number of holes and pockets! i can't keep up with the mass stone production!! my left tonsil has stopped producing(knock wood) the stones which used to hide INSIDE of the tonsil, accumulate and pop out at inopportune moments- like while i'm at my desk working- gagging, trying not to swallow THAT THING!! someone should create a word for that hideous smell! how can somethin sooo small smell that freakin' bad??? my boyfriend has no idea that ev morning i'm in the bathroom gagging b/c i'm tryin desperately to make the tiny stinking white chunks pop out of my tonsil pocket. i even make myself late for work when dealing with a stubborn, not ripe enough to pop out stone. has dr. oz tackled this subject yet? hey!! someone call oprah! thx for the suggestions- i'll b buying an h20 pick irrigator, sinus rinse bottle, straws, orange stick and therabreath IMMEDIATELY! there's a website i found this morning that sells oral products that supposedly help - i think its dentist.net-if anyone has used a sure fire method for prevention, pls, share...

I just spoke with my Dr. & was diagnosed with crytpic tonsils. I never heard of this condition before and now realize that those little white particles or balls are tonsil stones...just thought I wasn't swallowing my food properly. His recommendation until I can see an ENT is to use a waterpik and squirk it directly at the tonsil & it should disloge the tonsil stone in your mouth to spit out. I tried it last night & it worked on the first try and you don't have to worry about gagging on something because it's just a spray of water. I am seeing an ENT to determine whether getting my tonsils out is the best option and would love to hear from someone who has gone through the procedure & how they are doing afterward. Any more tonsil stones? Any side effects? Thanks!!

Wow, and here I thought I was just some weirdo who got this.
When I was younger, years (8-12) it would happen every once in a while, usually on my left tonsil.
And now, at that ripe age of 19 (ha ha) I’ve been dealing with these fiendish, bedamned , bits from hell for well over a year. My tonsil gets swollen, it hurts to swallow, I am constantly nervous that I have bad breath, and I can feel and tell when Have those little bastards ( pardon my language, but I think its one of the few suitable terms) and I have a constant painful pressure on my right ear. It’s total torture.
I told my mom about these, she didn’t believe me at first, until I showed her. She quickly changed her mind. I finally got to see an ENT after my doc referred me (after always telling me to gargle when, NEWSFLASH: IT NEVER WORKED!). She said ti would be a good idea to get them taken out, and told me she had seen several patients who had this problem as well. They wanted to schedule surgery after my semester was over, but with this whole insurance (or lack of), it wasn’t an option. Then, miraculously, they seemed to go away. Until today. The F***ers came back with a vengence, only this time, they are not budging, even after considerable pushing with a finger, and q tip (gross I know, but it was the only way.) So now, once again Im off to see the Doc this Monday, to schedule when I can get them taken out. It sucks because I was told it will take 10 days of recovery, and Im looking for a job, but on the other hand, I cant stand it anymore.
Anyway, to end my rant, I just wanted to say thanks for giving me some more info, as well as hope and the comfort (for lack of a better word) to know that I am not alone.
Thank you all so very much.

Here's the answer, folks. Yes, it it lodged food, aging and putrtifying. IT IS USUALLY NUTS -almonds, peanuts...that you have recently eaten. I guarantee it! Stop eating all nuts, even sunflower seeds on your salad, and you WILL NOT experience a reoccurance. Sometimes, if I'm in a situation and I must consume nuts, I immediately gargle vigorously with water. This works.

What a relief. My wife is always complaining that my breath stinks. I brush 2-3 time daily and floss as much as three times a day and she still says I have bad breath. I had been having the white balls of muck get dislodged when I cough really hard. Being in a dry enviroment makes it worse for me. Sometimes my mouth feels like it has a layer of dirt inside it but mostly like there is a lump of wet sand in my throat. After I cough a lot I usually get one of those white balls that comes out. I have had one as big as a dime. They smell worse than S.H.I.T. It's nice to know that I am not the only one with those.

Gargle with salt water to take care of these. It should be warm water (not too hot or too cold). My doctor told me that they are a combination of food particles, post nasal drip, bacteria, and dead white blood cells.

Since the tonsils are a part of your body's immune system, removing them can lower your body's immunity. If your tonsils are in a constant state of low grade infection, it would make sense to have them removed. If you are only experiencing the tonsil stones, you may want to consider the ramifications of surgery before having your tonsils removed.

I am so glad i decided to look this up. I have been experiencing this nasty things on my tonsils for a bout a year or two. I thought I was the only one and am embarassed by this condition. I went to the dr thinking maybe it was strep since i am prone to getting that. He didnt know what it was and finally told me it was just food trapped in my tonsil. (great advice huh). Well I just grew to deal with them. I tend to get them in periods. People mention on here to just get your tonsils removed but it is not that easy. I always get strep and my mom begged the dr to do a tonsiectomy. Especially since they said that I get reaccourences of strep due to the fact that the infection gets traped in the crevious of my tonsils. But they refused to take my tonsils out. They said if I was to get strep one more time that year they would talk about it but suprise suprise didnt get it again that year. I am trying all the tips that i am reading on here but the only bad thing is I have a very weak gag reflex so i can only do it for so long before i want to get sick so i guess i can dislodge it alittle bit at a time. Thanks everyone im so glad it isnt just me and im not dying lol.

I've had those whitish yellowish balls off and on since I was a kid. At the age of 12 I chipped my tooth and about a year later the tooth started to rotten thats when I first noticed the balls. Once I had my tooth pulled at the age of 16 the balls stopped. Until a few years ago when I started to have problems with my teeth again, the balls came back. Once I had my cavities fixed the balls stopped. now I've got another tooth that needs filling (rotten) now the balls are back. I'm glad I found this website. I felt all along and embarrased. I would suggest getting dental work even though it's soo expensive.

The little white/yellowish "balls" are coming out of your tonsils is plague build up , just like on your tounge in the morning. I dont know how the holes come about in the tonsils but i've done about 3 years worth of research about this because i've had this problem ever since i was 15 or 16. Now I'm 25 and a few years ago right before i turned 22 I went ahead and had my tonsils removed. To this day I have never found a doctor of any kind that knew what i was talking about(holes or white/yellowish ballls). But over the last year, I've had more and more trouble sleeping on my back because of the gross mucus feeling in the back of my throat. Sometimes I stop breathing! It's somewhat easier to sleep on my side but I can still feel the weight of my tonsils in the back of my throat. I finally made an ENT appt. So I'll see what he says. Whenever I would start to feel sick I would check and there it would be. I'd pop it out and instantly feel better. Hydrogen peroxide only would help with the stubborn ones but I really can't take the nasty taste of it. It's almost worse than the balls! I'm just happy to know that I'm not alone.

Wow. Reading everyone's post I find myself laughing at how similar we all are as humans in trying to solve our personal physical probelms, we prod and poke and usually make things worse. The types of tools we use are pretty funny you must admit; crochet hook, toothpick, cut straws, golf tee, etc. I will say that I've encountered these little creatures but not to a point I am bothered. Everyone needs to be aware that placing a foreign object in your mouth where the flesh is soft and vulnerable is never a good idea, especially when it is a pointy object like a toothpick. Remember that many items we may feel are good ideas are likely to be made cheaply and therefore likely have many imperfections like rough patches or sharp snags on metal and plastic. I would agree that a q-tip dipped in a special mouthwash like Oxyfresh w/ zinc (or whatever) is better than using a finger which probably harbors bacteria under the nail which is already jagged on a microscopic level. Any tears you create in your mouth while digging around for bacteria infested "stones" could easily become new infection sites. On a side note, my husband suffered from very bad breath which I said "smelt like his body was rotting" even though he brushed, flossed, and rinsed, no less than twice a day. He has since bought SmartMouth wash, comes in two bottles about $12 for the set, and I tell you, there is NO smell from his mouth even after sleeping. In the morning mine is worse than his. I can only assume that this wsa might also be a helpful agent in keeping your kisser fresh. I would say NOT to use it on the q-tip for cleaning. Please follow the instructions on the bottle and let me know if it helps with the stones. Last thought here, I would assume that if you can keep your tonsils, do so. It is indeed part of the disease fighting system. I came down with mono one year, had a white coating over both tonsils with black spots on them, looked just like cauliflower. Rushed to my pediatrician and she was actually horrified because she had never seen a case so bad. I felt fine, was out rollerblading that day but my tonsils looked like they were taken over by mini aliens. Pretty gross. Come to find out the tonsils were an overflow of my spleen that was backed up with infection. Would've never known had I not had the tonsils to tell me. Just a few thoughts from a regular person. Stay healthy everyone!

As so many have said, I am so glad to find out that I am not alone. For YEARS I have gotten regular ear infections and had sore throats. I have always gone to my primary care doc, and usually done the antibiotic thing. Yet, I still get this 6-8 times a year. Oh yeah, and the bad breath. My doc sent me to an ENT, and today I was diagnosed with Cryptic tonsils. My ENT gave me some antibiotics to deal with this episode, but he also gave me a tool (sort of a bent syringe) to use to rinse off my tonsils. The recommendation is that I do this daily with warm salt water. He stressed not to poke at my tonsils with my fingers or anything else! Hopefully, this provides some relief, otherwise I too will be looking at a tonsillectomy in my future. So not looking forward to that at age 38! But it would be worth it to not get sick so often.

I posted a comment about 3-4 wks ago about not being able to sleep thru the night because of all the mucus. Cryptic tonsilitis is a chronic infection. I also had the additional problem of sleep apnea so my ENT said tonsillectomy. I had my surgery 2 wks ago and am loving it. I'm 38 and recovery was a breeze. Don't be afraid to have a tonsillectomy!!

if you are having issues with those little tonsil "balls" you should definitely get a tonsillectomy! i did and i couldn't be happier...the couple weeks after the removal sucked but it was definitely worth it in the end. :)

FROM AN ENT: The white smelly balls/stones coming from your tonsils ARE NOT lodged food...They are tonsil debris. Your tonsils produce these on a daily basis. Some have an overproduction, which is a medical cause for tonsil removal...I had them removed for this very reason. And, I have never had to deal with those Gross things in years...nor infected tonsils The only way to rid yourself of them is to get a tonsilectomy

As nyine ever suffered from sinus headaches due to change in air pressure. I have been monitoring headaches I get for a while now, and seen ORLs and I can't seem to find relief.

The situation is that a day or so before a drop in atmospheric pressure, I start getting a mild sinus headache and it worsens until the rain/storm hits. The headache stays until the weather gets good again.

Nothing I do seems to relieve the headache.

Anyone with advice?

Thanks
Daniel

It's tonsilitis. My sister had this. After many doctor visits and testing, they tested her for tonsilitis and it was positive. She was on antibiotics for a while and now she is fine. No more stinky balls in her throat.

Thank God I have FINALLY found out after 15 yrs. what this problem that I have been having with the "tonsil stones" is. "Tonsil Stones" don't even come close to discribing how horrible this condition is. Hopefully I can find something that works before I consider elective surgery. Having to chew a pack of gum ( or 2 or 3) a day is an inconvenience to say the least. I tried squeezing my tonsils with revenge-like tenacity but to no avail-nothing came out ( they seem to have their own schedule, but coughing in the morning when lying on my side works best to eject them). I can STILL taste them.

I don’t agree with a lot of this so called tonsil stones. I feel the medical community is over looking the cause of these stinky balls. They smell like death and you can’t tell me they are normal! This symptom is only the start of many that each one of our bodies has or that they are going to get. I believe this is contagious and spreads at a very high rate. It can be spread during oral sex, and causing a woman’s vagina to have an odor. Also slowing down immune system and clogging your lymph glands. It may break out glands on back or your head or develop knots on your head. Destroy your teeth from the inside out. Clog hair follicles and cause severe hair loss. Dries skin out, cause open sores. Make you feel foggy headed, tired all the time, over weight, skin crawl. I know a lot won’t agree because they are too embarrassed or ashamed but this is real and our doctors need to look in to this and give us some help. Instead of turning their heads and telling us that we are delusional of its normal.

Thank God I'm not alone! I'm 16 years old and I had my tonsils removed three days ago (I feel like I'm going to die now!). I was always getting those tonsil stones, strep, my tonsils would even swell and stop me from breathing! My ENT told me that when he cut into my tonsil all he could see was infection. EW. BUT apparently those little tonsil stones should go away forever. Hope this helps.

My tonsil stones are virtually none existent now. I've changed my diet completely. I cut out ALL dairy, no wheat, soy and I drink LOTS of water and green tea. I stay away from the constant sugar that I was eating in foods. I think these factors played a HUGE role in not having weekly occurences any more.

If you experience a mucousy mouth, pay attention to what you eat and how you FEEL after you eat it. Is your mouth mucousy? Do you feel bloated/gas/heart burn etc? If so, DON'T EAT IT. Limiting these foods from my diet has helped a lot and I'm no longer afraid of smelly breath or kissing.

I am so very happy to not feel alone anymore. My Dr. made me feel like I was lying and told me to take them out myself only after I insisted that he listen to my complaint. I think it's dangerous to prod in my mouth and don't want to make things worse...but when the stink is too much I do it anyway. I don't think it's food particles. The reason being is that if it's so easy for that much food to go in, I should have the same ease in getting it back out. My tonsils did not always have crypts (craters). When a good sized tonsil stone did come out from my right tonsil, I just had to know "From where?" I said "Aahh." and just about panicked when I saw the gaping hole. At the time there were no craters on the left side for a while. When a tonsil stone eventually did come out of the left tonsil, guess what a brand spanking new crypt. I know it was new because I checked each time I took a stone out of the right side. But now that I think of it, I had what I thought was a ity bity portion of a popcorn kernel lodged up high on my left tonsil years ago. It hurt and was itchy. I drank lots of water, brushed it with a toothbrush...no dice. It came out on its own and I wasn't bothered by it till another one showed up almost immediately. At that time I was newly aware of sinus problems but the Dr.s were not able to help me. I have had post nasal drip (although it is way more than a drip - more like a low running faucet)for years now. I like the idea of asking Oprah. Maybe it'll she more light, encourage more research, or some sort of solution. I also had a few bumps that scared me. They looked like clear (as in glass or plastic) bumps so I could see the pink underneath bubble part. They hurt pretty bad, only lasted a short while, and went away on their own. I made it a point not to touch them or aggravate them in any way. I thought, at the time, maybe I'd had spicy food but I couldn't remember anything recent (I'm talking weeks.) I'd eaten like that. After the bumps I got the craters. Nothing comes out of the left tonsil right now but they are both swollen. The right tonsil hangs lower than the left and is sore. The right tonsil has at least 3 craters I can see but the left only has one so far. This condition freaks me out. I have not had the bumps (could be canker sores, but I don't know what those look like) again since having the craters. Maybe if enough people blog or comment about this problem on enough websites it'll get a lot more attention from the medical community. I think I'm gonna try Sanjay Gupta (sp?) on CNN.
