Antihistamines aren't Addictive!
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Your body doesn't become addicted to antihistamines anymore than your car becomes addicted to having a windshield. Okay, let me explain this odd analogy: If you have nasal allergies, and you inhale some of the allergens to which you've become sensitized, white cells burst open, releasing histamine, which quickly begins inflammation in your nose and you get symptoms. If there was some antihistamine in your body at the time, this inflammation is blocked. Sort of like the windshield of your car keeping dust and bugs from hitting your face when you drive.

If you remove the windshield of your car, bugs will again hit your face. If you then replace the windshield, it won't remove the bugs already in your eye. Does this mean that you or your car are "addicted" to the windshield?

In medical terms, your body does not develop tolerance to antihistamines. Once you take them for months to years, you don't need increasing doses just to get the same protection that you got originally. If you stop them "cold turkey" you are no more sensitive to allergens than when you began taking the antihistamine in the first place.

When only first generation antihistamines were available, they put me to sleep, so I only took them when my nose was stuffed up and my eyes itchy and red. They weren't very effective then, but I didn't complain because I was asleep.

When second generation non-sedating antihistamines came along, I took them an hour or two before planned walks into areas with grass or weeds. They worked great and I didn't get symptoms when I took them before allergen exposures. However, I didn't take them every morning because they cost a dollar per pill and I am frugal.

Now that generic Claritin only costs 3 cents a pill, I take it every morning. If I know that I will be working outdoors pulling weeds or using the weed whacker, I take two in the morning and wait a couple of hours before starting the yardwork. It works great.

Zyrtec is generally stronger than Claritin, but it's also ten times as expensive and requires a prescription. All antihistamines are much, much more effective when taken hours BEFORE allergen exposures instead of only after you get symptoms. That's the main reason that many people suffer needlessly. As with asthma, think PREVENTION.

HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED A REALLY BAD REACTION TO SINGULAIR?

FOLLOWING SINUS SURGERY, I TOOK IT FOR ALMOST TWO YEARS. I DEVELOPED GI IRRITATION, GAINED 25 POUNDS, AND URINARY FREQUENCY AT NIGHT. I BECAME REALLY ILL, VOMITTING, TEARING PAINS DOWN MY NECK, BACK AND LEGS AND WAS TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE I STAYED FOR 3 DAYS. AFTER SOME INTENRET RESEARCH, MY DAUGHTER FOUND A LOT OF ADVERSE SIDE EFFECTS, AND I DISCONTINUED IT ON MY OWN. ALL OF MY SYMPTOMS HAVE DISAPPEARD EXCEPT THE GI DISTRESS.

ANYONE HAVE A COMMENT?

Need some help! My wife has had very serious and aggressive episodes of hives and swelling, sometimes resulting in a trip to the ER for swollen throat. This has gone on for 23 years. Sometimes calm, and other times very nasty. Been to allergists and had test run. No apparent allergies. Is there anyone out there who has experienced this and found relief?

Maybe if you take a Benadryl to begin with when the "ittchies" start you won't have to deal with all the other stuff you have to do before taking the Benadryl.

There is a natural alternative for anti-histamine relief. It is called Quercetin. It is a bioflavinoid. (Like Rose hips is a bioflavinoid of Vitamin C). There were reports many years ago in Canadian medical journals that the drug in Claritin, Hismanal (which I loved because it worked, but has been taken off the market) and one other drug also taken off the market caused a significant increase in liver cancers with long term use. Natural remedies are best, they come from God, now who knows better, the drug companies or God?

I've seen a few comments posted regarding hives and allergy tests that have been negative. I suffer with chronic hives and my allergist was having difficulty determining why. He finally determined that my hives were a result of stress, because they were at their worst during periods of high stress. With this any scratch and pressure that is placed on my skin causes a hive to appear in that area; so, for example: you can write the word Hello on my arm with a pen and within a few minutes there are hives in the shape of the word on my arm. This may explain some comments that I have seen where people only get them while lying down or on their backs. If you are thinking about your stressful day and the stressful day that is coming up, and you are having pressure applied to your back that may explain why you are getting hives on your back. (I'm not a physician, but the previous comments and symptoms seem to closely mirror mine.) I get mine all over and manage it through taking allergy medicines twice daily. When I do get them anything cold being applied directly to the hives and relaxation/meditation techniques have helped. I'm not a physician, but medication and relaxation techniques is what works best for me. I also talked to my Dr. about why Benadryl cream and other anti-itch creams don't work for me, and he said that histamines are being released by my blood vessels and not the skin; so, any relief would need to come through the blood stream, and not applied to the skin.

I get itchy at night, too. Started when I was forty years old. I am not menopausal. I also get hives if I put an ice pack on anything. I swell up huge if I get a bee sting (had about four in my lifetime) I think I will try benadryl tonight, especially if it is not additive. I do notice stress makes everything worse. I have very sensitive skin, and use perfume free and sodium lauryl sulfate free everything. Even toothpaste. I am tired of myself!!!

If people get itchy at night it may be because they're allergic to dust mites that live in your bed or bedding. Try one of those fabric sprays and then vaccuum your mattress. Change sheets more often and wash in very hot water and dry on a high heat setting. That will kill the dust mites.

RE: Quercetin. Has anyone had any reactions to Quercetin? I've suffered with allergies for years, and have tried every over the counter antihistamine and tried just about every natural remedy. I took Quercetin last season, and it really helped with my seasonal hay fever, but I think I developed eczema from it! When I increased the dose, a major skin irritation came out on my hand - I stopped taking it right away and the irritation subsided. I think there might have been too much antihistamine in my body that my immune system over-reacted.

Has anyone else out there who has severe allergies had a spleenectomy. I am curious if this has anything to do with my development of severe food allergies. About 2 1/2 years ago I became severely allergic to corn, chicken, rice, wheat, soy, flax, coconut, sunflower & all nuts. I have anaphylactic reactions to these as well as to perfumes and chemical smells. I wear a medic alert necklace, carry my inhaler & epi pen everywhere and pray for a day that I don't have a reaction. It all started with the itching & hives and developed into the serious throat swelling and asthma attacks. Everyday is a gift! I struggle to stay alive. Who ever knew that at 42 years old I would be worrying so much about what is around me and what can I eat. I have lost 33 lbs in the past 5 months since I got so severe with the food allergies. Corn is the most difficult to avoid and causes immediate reactions. I even react to the airborne particulates and can't go to movie theatres anymore. Anyone out there with similar problems?

I'm not sure if anyone answered the itchy question. But I get the same thing and it's cause I'm not hydrated enough. I started using lotion more often and drinking more often and it helped, so maybe that's your problem. But it also could be some sort of allergic reaction, just a possibility.

2:49 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hmmm, that's a very interesting thought that the itching could be related to not drinking enough water. I am guilty of not enough water intake and for the several years I've been combatting hives. The hives weren't just coming at night while lying down or sitting still or from heat. They just occurred out of nowhere, for no apparent reason one day and the only real answer I got from the doctor was possibly stress. I changed my linens, my soap, my drycleaner, my diet, bought a new bed, you name it. Finally after trying all the over the counter stuff, benedryl and creams, I insisted my doctor come up with something to save me from scratching myself to death every night. I was finally prescribed a little green pill called hydroxyzine. One pill daily keeps my hives away. I can skip 2 or 3 days and still no itch. If I skip 4 days the itch comes back so I never miss taking them for more than 3 days. I have no side affects from the pills and no addiction. My doc says he has many patients who are taking them for the same thing (itching or hives) and you could literally take them all your life. Anyone heard of my little green pill? I don't leave home without them.

MY GOD- THIS IS SUCH A BIG ISSUE FOR THOSE OF YOU OUT THERE WHO ARE ITCHY AFTER STOPPING YOUR ZYRTEC-IT IS NOT NERVES, ALLERGIES OR A NEED FOR MORE WATER IT IS THE ZYRTEC!!!

ZYRTEC HAS A POWERFUL WITHDRAWL SYMPTOM THAT CAUSES HIVES-- I KNOW ZYRTEC IS USED TO TREAT HIVES BUT THE WAY IT DOES THAT VERY THING IS WHAT GIVES THOSE WHO STOP TAKING IT HIVES!!! IT INTERACTS WITH NERVE ENDINGS IN A WAY THAT CLARITIN AND ALLEGRA DO NOT. THERE IS A MESSAGE BOARD CALLED QUIT ZYRTEC GET ITCHY.. YOU MUST GO TO IT AND FIND OUT HOW MANY OTHER PEOPLE ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM AND ARE BEING TOLD" OH JUST TAKE YOUR ZYRTEC" OR "IT'S YOUR NERVES" I HAVE HAD LOTS OF ALLERGY ISSUES IN MY LIFE BUT NEVER HIVES---NEVER!! THERE ARE LIKELY THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO STOP THE MEDICINE BECAUSE OF COST OR MISS A DOES AND HAVE NOT IDEA WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON. I STOPPED 4 WEEKS AGO AND JUST HAD A HORRIBLE EPISODE TONIGHT OF HIVES AND ITCHING. A MAN I WORK WITH HAS THE SAME THING AND WE DISCOVERED THIS THROUGH CONVERSATION- HE HAD TO GO TO THE ER THE HIVES WERE SO BAD... PEOPLE MUST FIND OUT ABOUT THIS AND THERE NEEDS TO BE A WARNING!!!

Jan 12/08 - in response to the persno who mentioned hydroxyzine. I was put on that last year when I had a massive break out of hives....covered my entire legs. I couldn't take them too much because they made me really sleepy - to the point of not being able to function. I still do not know the cause of my hives. Mine seem to come around for a couple weeks then go away. Except this time, they are staying longer and my hands are getting puffy too...like they did when I was pregnant and got high blood pressure. I am annoyed at the itching and worried about the reaction and will it get worse? I can not seem to narrow it down to anything....there doesn't seem to be a trigger. And why does it go in 2 week clumps like that?

I do have to agree with the post that says prevention is the way to go. I just really hate being medicated but I guess I have to ask myself which I hate more....living on pills or getting hives?

This in response to tommyjohn! About 7 years ago my skin started to become irritated by all kinds of things. Sometimes I could just touch my skin and it would welp or break into hives. I had never had a skin allergy before.
Sometimes it is really bad and other times it won't be irritated at all. It can be anything that causes it. My clothes, scratching, pen anything that gets on my skin irritates it.
I went to the doctor and he told me that I had too much histamine in my body that causes me to break out. I tried taking allergy medicines and sometimes it would be better but usually no changes. I haven't had anything take care of the problem all together.
It gets worse as I get older which scares me because I am only 23 and when I am under stress it's even worse.
It's never gotten to the point where I have had to go to the ER. It usually goes away after about 30 minutes after being irritated.
I hope this helps or atleast makes you feel better to know someone is experiencing something similiar.

I have recently learned that I am allergic to chicken ... ? Long story short, I also learned that I can cook with chicken broth, bullion, and eggs no problem ... the actual meat of the chicken causes me problems. That really doesn't make sinse cause chicken bullion is made from chicken meat ... ? If I eat ONE bite of chicken, I get diareah and a migrane within 6 hours of injestion. If I take a claritin 20 minutes before eating chicken, I am fine ... my question is why is it happening like that? I can eat anything to do with chicken except the actual meat itself. What is wrong? Can anyone help me understand what this is?

Also, what is the generic claritin? I can't afford to pay for claritin all the time.

Thanks!

to all of you who said they get really itchy at night. I am trying to get off Zyrtec after having taken it for the last four months. I am having a hard time doing so. I've taken Zyrtec every spring for about 10 years. Every time I go off of it I develop terrible insomnia. It takes about three months to get over the insomnia. BUT this time around, I have developed a terrible itching. The itching goes away if I take one-half of a Zyrtec pill. It comes back if I don't take another pill within 24 hours. Come to think of it, I have developed this itching before when I went off Zyrtec and used hydrocortisone cream to stop it, but I never before contributed the itching to the Zyrtec. It is definitely some type of withdrawal symptom.
Also, my husband has noticed that I get terribly moody, cry a lot, and become critical of everyone when I am on Zyrtec -- and go back to my normal self when I am off of it.
AND I have begun to notice that my appetite goes wild while on Zyrtec. When I go off Zyrtec, my appetite goes back to normal. I have gained almost 50 lbs since I was introduced to Zyrtec.
I would like to say that I will never take it again, but it is the only antihistamine that completely controls my springtime allergic asthma. I need to be able to breathe.
Technically, Zyrtec may not be "addictive" but it sure is hard to get off of it if you have been on it for several months.
Before a medical person says it isn't addictive, that person should take the pill for 4 to 6 months and then quit cold turkey. Then tell us your experience!

Now cant take it and trying salicylate free diet. Good luck!

I recently discovered that 40 years of GI,skin problems, brain fog,and now weight loss is probably because I have have several food intolerances: glutens and corn. Sometimes I get sick from CHICKEN and beef. I think that perhaps the chickens and beef are being fed CORN AND GLUTENS, which is not the food these animals eat in the wild. Mad Cow disease started because they were feeding cow meat to cows! I am now looking for free range chickens, eggs, and beef. Hope this solves my problems and yours. Take a good look at the dog and cat food----most of it is glutens...not a natural food for such animals! Is this why so many pets suffer from skin problems and blotting..not to mention being overweight? I called Foster Farms and they said that they feed their chickens corn and soy! Hope this helps.

I have suffered from allergies all of my life and have had the shots and the usual antihistamine treatments. I tried everything from Sudafed to Zyrtec. I've found that Zyrtec makes your mouth so dry that it's like paste in your mouth!! I stopped it and went back to Benadryl. I've had some sleep issues so I take Benadryl and Tylenol and it does wonders. Has anyone had times where their blood pressure and pulse has been high when the pollen count has been high and been exposed to the airborne dust particles. I know this all to well and my stress levels tend to go up around this time too!! And even when my stress levels are high I break out in hives when this happens too!! I've also had mononucleosis when I was a teenager so I still have the Epstein virus in my body which doesn't help. Now I may have mitral valve prolapse (mild) which doesn't help things either.

FACT : Stopping taking anti-histamines can lead to withdrawl symptoms.

FACT : There are a lot of people who have posted comments about this on the internet

FACT : You can't trust any medical professional to tell you the truth - mostly because they don't know what the truth is.

AS with many people, stopping taking antihistamines gives me severe, almost intolerable, itching all over and I usually get "allergic reaction" symptoms at some point when I am coming off them, which I don't get at any other time.
Here's the proof of why these symptoms are withdrawl symptoms:
I have gradually reduced the dose over a period of months - from 10mg, then 5, 2.5, 1.25 and recently to 0. Everytime I have stepped it down, the itching had come on strong and my eyes have been red and I have been sneezing a lot. BUt then, guess what? After a couple of weeks, these symptoms go away. Then I wait a while, halve the dose again and symptoms come back - and then go away. Conclusive proof, I think, that these are withdrawl sypmtoms and are not "..an underlying itching allergy that the antihistamines were masking" - the excuse that medical professionals were trying to fob me off with, if this were true the symptoms woudl never go away would they?
But, I suppose if the current scientific thinking can't explain these symptoms then they will just be ignored - for that's the way medical "science" works.

Always listen to your own body. Everyone is different. I can take Claratin on occasion and my son only reacts to Zyrtec for those stubborn allergies. We also do the natural healing and holistic approach which for the most part is awesome! But in this real nasty allergy season we load up on the Vit. C, Omega 3's and inhale peppermint oil...once in awhile we suclude to the Rx. But always listen to your body. Doctors are great, so are naturalist...and in both I have come across soem that are money pigs and just feed your there schpeel...so do what works for you! A good chiro to keep your spine aligned and healthy so your nerves are all responding to your body correctly does not hurt either...but in this economy can be expensive. My daughter has severe eczema so bad and can hive very easily and we tried all sorts of creams, pills and derm after derm could not pin point it...One appt with a Chiro and she was under control. It still flares but mainly on my fault when we get behind on watching what she eats..ie.wheat and eggs. Hope all find releif this fall!
