The Today Show, Stress and Dr. Farrell
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

I've always enjoyed being on the Today Show because they take serious topics and treat them with a delicate, helpful touch. So, when Today called me and asked if I'd do the show on October 26 on the topic of stress in today's world, I agreed without a second thought.

An American Psychological Association poll recently found that almost half of those who responded felt that they were more stress today than in the past five years. They are concerned and stressed over finances, particularly rent and mortgage payments, problems managing family and work, and 54% said they are fighting with people close to them. So, what to do?

I'm always being asked for "natural" remedies for anxiety and stress and tomorrow (right now for you), I'm going to give the audience five tips:
  1. Watch the "healthy triad" -- diet, sleep and exercise -- and don't skimp on any of them

  2. Put fun and laughter in your life -- it's the best medicine for which you write the prescription

  3. Learn and use relaxation breathing on a regular basis--I have it on my website's self-help page here and I urge you to use it

  4. Take mini-vacations of two-three days and do it on the spur of the moment. If you can't actually go, try a virtual vacation in your mind. See my guided imagery tip on the self-help page.

  5. Learn to say "no." I deal with that in my book and I can't say how important this is. Setting limits on what you do or what you agree to do for others and you'll be happier and, in the long run, so will they.

So, Matt Lauer, here I come.

I am really glad I found your blog.

You were awesome on The Today Show.

I'm pretty nervous as I'm FINALLY dealing with my mental health issues.

I always thought I had a problem with anxiety and I know I've suffered with chronic depression.

I was alwasy scared and ashamed to get help. But reading your blog for a while has helped me to see that this is just as real as having a cold.

I just started today on Cymbalta and also Vyvanse for add and adhd. I was diagnosed with depression and generalized anxiety disorder.

I'm an SVP at a major media company and highly funtioning...but life -- while successful looking on the outside -- feels heavy.

I'm hoping I can work with my psychiatrist to get to a better place.

But I'm also confused even after speaking with him...I know it takes time and each patient is different.

So the Cymbalta should probably help both my anxiety and depression (I haven't felt all that depressed recently though it is tough to wake up... I never have energy)?

And the Vyvanse should help both attention span and hyperactivity?

I guess I'm just scared -- in the end -- that maybe Tom Cruise is write and all this "medicine" is just making reality.

Do you have any thoughts? I'm pretty scared about it all actually.

Also, I'm a 31 year old male living on the east coast, single and gay (if that matters).

Meditation is also a technique that needs to be included on the list. It will help you develop focus, concentration a give you a piece of mind to transfer stress into a useful energy force.

I saw you on the Today Show too (although it took me a while to find this blog).

My problem was always with panic, anxiety, and agoraphobia.

I just wanted to comment on the fact that your drug-free recommendations are very good - and effective.

Thanks :) I'll be coming back here often.

I always add to make sure you take regular breaks during your day no matter how busy you are. You will be more effective and less stressed if you take regular breaks
