Perspective Fights Anxiety
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

The Mayo Clinic is now providing those who suffer from anxiety and stress some help in handling the challenges of life or the anxiety that they feel on a daily basis. It's a matter of perspective, according to these clinicians. Looking at the personality characteristics that seem to help resilient people maintain their sense of calm in the face of problems or anxiety, they have offered a list of qualities.

Resilient people use several approaches to stress and anxiety. These individuals:
  1. Use humor.

  2. Use their experience as a means to learn to cope.

  3. Maintain an optimistic/hopeful outlook.

  4. Understand and accept change.

  5. Establish goals and work toward them.

  6. Engage in self-examination.

  7. Maintain their sense of self-esteem.

The primary thing to remember is that you don't need to put yourself down because you think you haven't succeeded in something. View each challenge or problem as an opportunity for growth and understand that life is practice in living.

Hi! So i just have a few questions, that don't really have to deal with your topic today, but they have to deal with anxiety. Every once in a while, i have anxiety, or panic attacks, whichever you want to call them... and i am kind of used to them, so i know when they are about to come, & i know how to control them well. But tonight, in my math class, i had one for no reason at all. I wasn't stressed today, & i really haven't been that stressed in a while. I do stress a tiny bit everyday over pointless situations... but the real point is, it really happened for no reason, and i've been reading that this is normal, but they also say that if you don't get treatment or whatever, then it came happen again for no reason, and my anxiety attacks can get more intense over time. Which is what i am afraid of.
ALSO- my mom is bipolar, but i do not think i have it, infact i KNOW i don't have it, right now at least. & i obviously have a slight anxiety issues, or i wouldn't have these attacks... it was just weird that i had one for no reason today.
Is this a sign that it's turning into a disorder? Is it starting to really affect my body/brain now? Will they really get worse over time if i don't get help??

Sara, do you think you might be stressing a little from fear? Fear of thinking you may have or will have a "bipolar" condition. If you lock your mind on such things, this will cause you to be unable to think through other things that are going on in your life. You will probably start thinking you have Alzheimer's, making statements like, "I'm forgetting everything", which only cause more stress. This is because you're to focused on a problem. Read Isaiah 26:3, it may help. : )

I know that breast cancer is causing my anxiety. I've had chemo, surgery, radiation and now I'm having herceptin iv. My biggest concern is chemo brain. From all I've read there's no doubt I have it though my oncologist seems reluctant to discuss it. I'd appreciate any info you could give me including how long it can last or if it's a permanent condition? What, if anything I can do about it.
Thanks in advance for anything you can tell me.

I didn'y see an answer to Sara's last question of will they get worse over time if she doesn't get help. I would also like to know the answer to that question as I have been under TONS of stress lately and have had a couple of panic attacks. Oh, another question she had was will it affect her body and brain. Again I would like to know this answer also. Thank you, Barbara H. e-mail bjbh@bellsouth.net

To Sara:

Have you ever see n a psychiatrist? i think psychiatrists get a bad rap but they are doctors too - and they treat illness like anxiey or bipolar just like other doctors treat stomach aches or cancer. a lot of people suffer with anxiety even though there are many great treatments out there. medications are one example of how anxiety can be treated. also, by seeing a psychiatrist, she/he could help sort out if this is bipolar or if you have symptoms of bipolar. its dificult to live with uncertainty - i think seeing an expert would help.
