Ask Your Doctor... Ask Your Doctor WHAT???
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

A day does not go by where I do not see a television advertisement for a prescription medication. The final tag line is: "Ask your doctor about THIS NEW DRUG."

I am trying to figure out what exactly patients are supposed to ask me. In arthritis and pain management, the following drug categories and devices have had this tag line:
  • Anti-inflammatory injections for rheumatoid arthritis
  • Partial knee replacements
  • Knee replacement supposedly (but not really) designed for women
Does anyone out there have any idea what to ask their doctor? I believe what the companies want to happen is the following:
"Hello Doctor, I want to ask you about Drug X. Why don't you use it? Why didn't you tell me about it? According to the television, it is the perfect drug for me. I am now asking you about it to put pressure on you to prescribe it - irrespective of whether it helps me... and by the way, the television is a better source of information than you."

Drug advertisements for arthritis and pain medications have their place. But there really IS no substitute for a doctor.

I have a question for the doctor: I had a total knee replacement 7 years ago. I am having terrible pain in that same knee. It is located under the knee cap. It feels like a burning, jabbing knife pain that is more unbearable when I stand up after sitting a short time. It continues even when I am walking. I had an x-ray that only told that my replacement is in good shape. I had an MRI that was unable to be completed due to the replacement. It showed only blackness. I am at a loss as what to do next. Please advise ASAP
Thanks,
Gina

You may need an aspiration (fluid removed). What do the x-rays show?

You may need fluid removed to look for infection. Also a bone scan is the proper test- not an MRI.

I suffer chronic arthritic lower back pain, my Internist put me on fentanyl patches--first 25 & then 50. I was not on an opiod drug previously. I complained that I experienced withdrawal type symptoms after about 60 hrs. so could I get off them as that made me very uncomfortable (in addition to the hassel of getting prescriptions in person every month) He said no and gave me codine/acetaminophen to use between the 60 hrs & 72 hrs. I have since weaned myself off of the patches by going from 50 to 25 to 12.5 and using the codine/acetaminophen in decreasing amounts over several days to get to the new level. I am not using the patches now, but I still have the problems with my legs and arms that I did with withdrawal. Can one experience nerve damage using this drug? I used the 50 patches for about 5 or 6 months. I also suffer from chronic depression and take zoloft (2 tablets daily) I found my depression much worse on the patches. Please advise Nan

Hip replacement might be in my future. I have been told to apply a cold pack to the hip joint and have been told to apply heat. Confusing. Which is correct? Thank you.

After my dad's 2nd knee surgery his doctor had him start a product called Monavie Active with glucosamaine. It is all natural and he swears by the differnece in his healing, pain level etc. Have you heard of this? I started taking it about 6 months ago.Taking 2 ounces of Monavie in the AM and 2 ounces in the early evening ensure that I am getting 10 t0 13 servings of fruits a day with the highest antioxidants found in any food! For only about 100 calories . It is a no brainer- easy, gives me tons of energy, I sleep better, my skin glows and I know I have given my body what it needs. It sure takes the stress and guess work out of eating right. Among the reported benefits/features of this deep purple berry are: High levels of dietary fiber –
High levels of essential amino acids and trace minerals - High levels of plant sterols –
Essential fatty acids ratio that resembles olive oil - Protein profile similar to eggs –
Very low sugar content - High levels of antioxidants

I am just wanting to know if Dr. Kirschenbaum is related to Dr. Robert Kirschenbaum in Orlano, Florida. I work for Dr. K in Orlando for many years in the 80's as his scrub.
I hope you are as good a doctor as he is.

36 yr old male that has Facet disease after going to therapy started having symptoms of feeling dizzy, nausea ( never vomiting ), pressure behind eyes, went to ENT Dr. was told he had Vertigo, another Dr.said that he was diabetic ( after doing more blood work found out he wasn't ), went to a allergist found he was allergic to dust mites, weeds, cigarette smoke, needs to start getting shots but haven't yet, went eye Dr was told that he had swelling in the optic nerve and cranial swelling, already had MRI done on head and back, found nothing wrong, eye Dr. said that he needed a Spinal Tap done to rule out a tumor or MS, that was done, all clear, nothing wrong, had a vision test where you look at squares, blocks, same answer nothing wrong, We thank GOD for the good results!!! also has been able to get a patch that he wears behind his ear for the nausea, which has helped but he must be allergic too them also, large red swollen spots after they have been on, my question is after all of the test and pain that he has been through, could the problem be that he needs to start getting the allergy shots ?

I am a 45 year old woman and had surgery on my left shoulder a week ago. The docor said I didnt have any cartilage and they removed bone spurs. I had to take a medical leave from work to have the surgery and they decided I need a total shoulder replacement. They also say that I am too young to have a shoulder replacement. In your medical opinion should I have the replacement done while on medical leave from work?
