Swine Flu Symptoms, Pandemics, and More
Swine flu news is spreading fast, with media reports buzzing about probable, confirmed, or possible cases in California, Texas, Kansas, and New York.
The story is moving quickly and WebMD is covering this breaking news story as it develops.
Meanwhile, let's get a few things straight on a practical level.
Swine flu symptoms: If you're about to Google "swine flu symptoms," we can save you some trouble. There isn't a special set of symptoms unique to swine flu. It's pretty much flu, and it takes a lab test to tell whether it's swine flu.
Here's what the CDC's web site says about swine flu symptoms: "The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea."
What is a pandemic: Heard the word "pandemic" tossed around during coverage of the swine flu outbreak? That term isn't just the "it" buzzword of the moment -- it has a specific meaning in public health circles.
Here's the official definition from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS): "A pandemic is a global disease outbreak. An influenza pandemic occurs when a new influenza [type] A virus emerges for which there is little or no immunity in the human population, begins to cause serious illness, and then spreads easily person-to-person worldwide."
Now, if swine flu sounds to you like a pandemic, it's not quite that simple.
The World Health Organization (WHO) today said there are "gaps in knowledge" about the new swine flu virus -- which actually contains a mix of swine, human, and bird (avian) flu viruses into a brand-new virus. The WHO has asked all countries to be on the lookout for the new virus, but it's not yet ready to bump up the pandemic alert level from phase 3 to phase 4.
Phase what? The WHO has a scale ranging from phase 1 (low risk of a flu pandemic) to phase 6 (a full-blown pandemic is underway). Right now, the WHO is considering whether to shift from phase 3 (which means there is no or very limited human-to-human transmission) to phase 4 (defined as evidence of human-to-human transmission).
Once and for all, how many cases are there in the U.S.? Nobody knows for sure -- and even if there was such a number, it's bound to change, and keep changing.
The official tally of confirmed cases reported to the CDC, as of April 25, are six cases in California and two in Texas. Beyond that, health officials in New York City have sent swabs from at least eight students at a private school in Queens to the CDC for further testing to see if they're swine flu. And earlier today, CNN reported that two confirmed cases are expected to be reported in Kansas. Plus, there are reports of a seventh case in California.
In a press conference today, CDC officials said it wasn't feasible to try to contain the virus, and that more cases are likely to turn up around the country -- and that so far, U.S. cases have been milder than those in Mexico.
How concerned are you about swine flu? To borrow a page from the WHO, how do you rank it on your own radar of health concerns, from 1 to 6, with 1 being "yawn" and 6 being "I'm freaking out"?

An EMT told me that they have been trained for a pandemic and to expect the public to be quarantined if a pandemic actually happens. I stocked up just in case this flu scare will turn into a pandemic. If it has avian virus mixed in with swine and human, this could be deadly. I don't know but am prepared as of today, for anything to happen.
+Well I was watching the news and they said that most of the young people that caught this virus in mexico, died in 48 hours! this is scary!!!
It's rather disconcerting that this hybrid influenza is so much like the famous 1918 pandemic that killed as many as 100 million people worldwide between 1918 to 1920 reaching all areas of the world including the Arctic.
AS in the 1918 pandemic CYTOKINE STORM (which is a dangerous malfunction of the bodies immune system) appears to exist in this particular strain.
The fact that young, healthy people between the ages of 20 and 40 years are most often victim would strongly suggest cytokine storm is apparent and the similarities of this influenza strain to that of the deadly 1918 pandemic are a cause for major concern (but not panic).
What concerns me most is the incubation period and the fact that this influenza cannot be isolated or contained. Its presence does not become evident in a population until AFTER its symptoms have manifested... and by this time it's difficult to determine how many others have been infected in the interim.
Fortunately, today, we have better technology to effectively treat this otherwise deadly influenza than our ancestors in 1918. Which should be of great relief.
I live in Vermont and am twenty three years old. A couple das ago I started to have a runny nose, a fever, sore throat, muscle aches, and hacking cough. My chest is starting to hurt from the coughing and when I breath I feel a tickle in my chest. It has gotten worse that all I want to do is sleep, is that the start of the swine flu? The coughing has gotten so bad that I've started hacking up like a rusty/bloody looking mucus. The symptoms seem to get worse instead of better. I tried to get into my doctor but they can't get me in until next week, I might end up going to Er.
my husband is currently being treated for pneumonia, but we have 2 small children, and I think that, although we have no contact with swine or poultry except the supermarket, I am going to get some Tamiflu to keep at home... it makes me feel a little more prepared for the worst case scenario. I personally do not trust doctors to know enough to test for this flu.
Swine flu spreads for person to person so you don't need to be in contact with a pig to have gotten it. Flu season is pretty much over, so if you have flu symptoms it's best to be tested for swine flu.
I believe that come monday we will hear that this is much more wide spread than we think.
It might be a good time to stock up on masks.
I think it's best if we all keep a level head, common sense will get us much farther than panicking. It seems to me we would all be best served if we practice basic disease prevention such as hand washing, and covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or upper arm. Small steps often take us farther than drastic measures.
I agree that we should keep a level head and not panic. I am a nurse and I think the public should educate themselves about this and WASH YOUR HANDS frequently especially while in public. Everyone has a responsibility to prevent this flu from spreading and to protect themselves and others. Also, these diseases always come from other countries. But this president will never control or close borders-which would also make more jobs for americans in this economy-my added opinion.
I am not worried about the virus. 20 known cases in the US, out of 300+ million people. Chances are slim. Same precautions for everyone, wash your hands, use lysol, and standard universal precautions. This is life. No matter how many vaccines we pump into our children, no matter how many yearly shots we get, or pills we take, nature will do what it has to do for it's life to adapt. This is how it is going to be forever. Don't live in fear, live your life and love it. You are not going to die. You will be fine.
Couldn'tid it better myself Abby...I'm a medic here in Kodiak, Alaska....We live life at a much different pace than the rest of the US.....and we entend on doing just what you said. Live life and enjoy it....the same as we always have!!
Abby,
"You are not going to die." We are all terminal, just some sooner rather than later. I think it is fine for people to be nervous about it. It's true the chances are slim, but I'm a mom that lost a child to a foodborne illness. It's easy to be nonchalante about these things until it's your family that is sick.
You talk of only 20 cases! What about the people who don't go to the doctors? They are not reported. So it could be many more also that would be for any country.
I reside in New York, as you know Ny is a cosmopolitan city, the mayor should aware people about the precautions and systoms all kinds of people live here. We must have the mask handy and if need be go to the Er if your doctor doesnt have time to see you, specailly people who have children.
I have heard that Swine Flu is a killing flu. Is this true?!? I live in California, I would not like to die yet, I am only 17.
I am wondering why no one has come up with the question of why this cannot possibly be some form of a biological terrorist attack. What better way to get something like this in the US than to have it brought in through illegal immigrants crossing our borders? I think this especially because the cases in Mexico vs. the US have been much more severe. Only some food for thought. It doesn't help so much from a medical perspective but just some thinking into the origination. If this is a combination of human, avian and swine strains, what better place to evolve than in a lab?
Wow. So is swine flu fatal?? How far has it spread? Does anyone know how/when/where this started???
How does Swine Flu spread?
is it airborne? because i'm thinking of
wearing a surgeon mask when i go
outside if it is airborne.
Any flu can be fatal. WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN - when in doubt, wash! Use antibacterial gel. Stay away from people who are coughing. Wash your hands again. If you get sick and the symptoms don't subside in a couple of days, go see your doc. Drink lots of fluids and WASH those hands.
i have two kids 3 and 2 years old. they are both very sick i took the 3 yr old to the doctor friday and he tested her for cold flu and bladder infection but all was negative he said he didnt know what it was but prescribed her amoxicillion anyway now the baby is very sick so should i be worried
I am 67 years old and I do believe I had a slight case of the virus. I drank many glasses of water and did get down two cups of jello with fruit, I had all the symtoms and I was over it in two days. I am thankful for that. missblue
I hate to turn this into a political issue, but lets just take a few moments to observe the obvious. The first reported cases were in Mexico. The first reported cases in the US were in CA and TX, two states in which illegal mexican immigrants are in the millions. Is this a coincidence? Maybe now our government will think about upholding our immigration laws and use military force if necessary to protect our borders. How many Americans have to die in order for our government to see the obvious??!
I have seen some posts of people avoiding pork and poultry. This flu CANNOT be spread by eating either.
The idea of a biological terrorist attack is not at all far-fetched. Why would you start with Mexico ? Plenty of poor people with little or no access to health care who can transmit the virus easily. The growing/picking season is starting here in the US and migrant workers will be streaming across the border. Need I say more ?
what about people that can't go to the doctor because they have no insurance, no money, no job? not EVERYONE can just run to the doc when they feel a little ill.
I would like to remind everyone with children. Talk to your childs school about their procedures during regular cold and flu season. We as parents can do only somuch @ home with hand washing, sanitizing, and germ talks with pre-schoolers. I recently found out that my school doesn't have funds to sanitize every classroom item everyday........think how maylil ones sneeze cough orstuck that item in their mouth, before you child did....eeewwww grose. nowonder flu season is always when school starts..... I don't know what my schools budget is, but I'm donating some bleach...
and hey to the politicians......nows the timeto think of insurin al of america... I can't afford insurance and have to work sick or not...so imagine how fast and to how many people I'd spread this and my children to your children.........makes ya all think
Anonymous,
Illegal immigrants or no, people travel to Mexico as tourists, which is how the professionals seem to think the cases in NY turned up. But I would imagine that if you're in California or Texas, very close to Mexico, you're even more likely to take a vacation in those areas. Are you suggesting we should stop all recreational travel, as well?
Easy enough to blame illegals, but it's just as likely wealthy tourists who are the problem. Maybe we should quarantine them when they return. That would be popular.
OK people stop freaking out.. there have been NO CONFIRMED DEATHS IN THE USA DUE TO SWINE FLU.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/first100days/2009/04/26/napolitano-cdc-hold-joint-news-conference-swine-flu/
If idiots who are sick will stay in their homes after going to the doctor, (wear a mask and gloves when going to doctor or out of house), wash and are careful you can stop this "epidemic" before it becomes a Pandemic. So show respect for others and stay home if you are diagnosed with any type of flu!
Does anyone else find it funny that Saintsmom used fox news as a back up to their argument?
In the 70's we were vaccinated for the swine flu. Did this vaccine wear off, I'm sure it has.
For about 10 days I have had a flu... started with aches and pains, sore throat, fever, could not get out of bed. Very little stomach complications. We were all vaccinated against the "flu" this season. Our eldest son (23) has Cystic Fibrosis, and our (16) year old has tourette's and asthma, so we take it to prevent them from becoming extreemly ill. (And a bit to protect ourselves)
My husband developed more symptom than me, his cough and chest congestion is awful. We have both had fevers, I was getting better... It has now moved into my chest. We are following more extensive sanitary hand washing and we are homebound. We are not going out...Not even to the doctor. Should we? Especially since I have gotten worse after a day and 1/2 of feeling better. Our CF child is staying with friends since he has already been hospitalized for up to 20 days three this year.
I only heard about this yesterday and I've had Flu symptoms for about a week. 2 days ago my wife started feeling the same as I. She works at the local Airport and missed 3 weeks earlier this year with a broken toe, and missed the last week in march & first week this month for other health problems. Her boss says he'll have to "Let her go" if she misses any more work. What should she do?
We see this pandemic and continue to allow people to fly into our cities from Mexico City...Should we be quarantine travelers when then arrive so they don't infect the rest of the populations?
everyone needs to relax. Now every cold and cough is the virus, come on. Be smart
I'm scared even more now. I got an flu shot last year, would this help me to prevent me to get the Swine Flu?
I have been reading what everyone is saying, but for some of you all I have to say your are ignorant. I am not mexican but its funny how you can blame it on them. Yes some has cross the border but that has been happening since a very, very long time. Did you guys forget that us americans visit mexico to have a swell time so dont you think that it could be our fault for going down there to begin with. Thanks for those with smartest way to deal with the situation like buying masks and washing your hands etc. Quit the blame game.
to CHRISTINE PULLEY
if you and your husband have any flu symptoms it is always best to go to the doctor...any type of flu can kill...this one is a diff. strain the the one you were vaccinated for, so that vaccination is useless.
I think people should stop pointing fingers at other countries as if it's being done on purpose. Point blank, people are getting sick and weather they are illegal or legal, we need a solution in order to stop this and help the ones that are ill get better....
Can my pet Bird----- A parakeet contact the Swine Flu?
Wow!! I think that it's easy to blame natural phenomenon such as a new strain of flu on a particular culture, the apacolypse, or terrorism but it really boils down to basic biology. Yes, this is a serious form of a serious virus. Vaccinations have been created to keep us from getting other forms of the same virus. When a parasite, such as a virus, is unable to find a host the parasite either dies or mutates. If humans develop an immunity to the flu due to the vaccine, the flu has no choice but to mutate into a more serious form in order to survive.
While everyone in my household is ill at this time, I refuse to jump to the conclusion that it is the swine flu. It has become all too American to try to self-diagnose when we are not qualified to do so. This treating every little thing that goes wrong with us and being germophobic as a nation has an impact on our immune systems and their ability to do their jobs. We may be able to treat just about every illness known to man, but in doing so, we are forcing them to become stronger while we are weaker.
When I was in the Army at Fort Hood, TX we were giving 2 doses of the Swine Flu virus and 1 does of the Hong Kong Flu virus. This was some time around 1976-1977.
After wards I read in Medical journal that the both types of shots were not suppose to be give together.
Call me dumb but how long does the vacination stay in your body?
Pau D'Arco tea. Look it up.
I am sick already with the Shingles. Should I be even more worried about getting this since I am already sick ?
I am truly stunned at the total disregard for logic here. (Not to mention the poor grammar...) Anyway, there are many articles in the news that will give you all of the information you desire.
Everything will be fine.
shelly/Ohio..we were just notified that we have a confirmed case here. . I do agree that its not 'silly" to think of this as a terroists attack" with my husbands job..(police chief) they are already looking at that.. they do that for all illnesses all the time. Borders have always been a problem..theres not enough protection. Yes this is scarey but we do need to try to be calm, take precautions, and if you have no health insurance and you "think" you have symptoms, the ER has to treat you. Also just heard a vaxcine will be vaialable as early as Tuesday possibly! we have a son and a daughter that have special needs, so as a parent I understand this is scarey. Just everyone hang in there.
take care.
If you are sick- stay home.
Best prevention is to wash your hands frequently. Especially after using the bathroom and before eating. Stay well.
I think we jut need to Love one another and trust in God he will take care of every thang and every body. God Bless. june
First off...let's all be mature about this and stopgiving credit where it isn't due...
1. Why does it always have to be a terrorist attempt? We have had issues with "terrorist" attempts and our food, but common sense people...why the hell would they create a disease that could potentially wipe out the world. Nobody is that stupid.
2. For all of you who said it's Obama's fault...how the hell is it Obama's fault? Does he have swine flu? Is he walking around coughing in people's faces like the guy who had tb did and traveled the world? I don't see the coorelation...people just like to have somebody to blame. I guess it makes reality less scary? Isn't that great? A life where you have no concequences...Grow up!
3. Viruses and Bacterium adapts just as much as people do. It's ignorant to believe that we are the only organisms on Earth that have learned how to adapt. It's biology people. Survival of the Fittest..their goal is to survive as well. They have to be able to adapt. And the number of vaccinations and immunizations people get for unnecessary things like chicken pox or over-abusing antibiotics...are what causes situations like this. The more we use them the more they learn about our body and how to get through the loop holes.
4. It is not passed from food, so for all of you who aer blaming pork eaters...shut up.
5. As for the whole Mexican immigrant thing...my father's side of my family is Mexican. So for people making ignorant statements, about immigration and how the government needs to do this and do that, they can shutup. You can never put yourself in a position until you're actually in the situation. And if I recall...the majority of my classmates from college decided to take little ttrips to Tijuana and Cancun etc so that they can be on tv and MTV Spring Break. So they can be blamed just as much, quite honestly it could just be carrying in the air. It could be somebody in Mexico coughing and the bacteria gets attached to a leaf that settles in NYC lol! That theory is just as ridiculous as some of the ones I heard..so you know what you sound like now.
6. The last thing to do is panic. There's no point in pointing fingers and playing the blame game. We're adults here. Just be safe like usual: stop sharing drinks and food and cigarettes etc and WASH YOUR HANDS PEOPLE! COVER YOUR MOUTHS when you cough and keep tissues on you for when you're sneezing, because you might think it's allergies or sinus and it's actually early signs of the flu.
~may you all be safe and wary of the potential trouble ahead~
i like how saintsmom trusts the news, if she was smart she would know the news dosent tell all, they like to hide stuff from the public. Their might not be any deaths in the us, but never trust what you hear from the news.
June I agree with you we should all get our lives in order, confess our sins and accept Jesus as our personal savior. Peiple get ready...JESUS IS COMING....gOD bLESS US ALL..EVERYNE.
If you live in an area of confirmed cases of "swine flu," you can wash your hands, etc., and reduce your risk of being exposed. But, remember that if you pick up your mail or your newspaper, someone with swine flu symptoms may have sneezed on these items! If you leave a public restroom, be sure to turn off the faucets and open the doors with a paper towel; otherwise, "washing your hands" may not reduce your exposure. Just because I seem to be paranoid doesn't mean that there isn't anything about which to BE paranoid!
I find the pedantic tactics that most of you have decided to take completely ludacris. This blog is supposed to be purely for the purpose of informing and educating those who are truly concerned about the swine flu. Instead, it has turned into a way to demean and belittle others and their views. Education really is key in situations like this. If you are worried, talk to a health care professional, take basic preventitive steps to ensure safety, and keep a cool head. Really, it boils down to basic biology, a class we all took in high school. Oh, and I remain anonymous because I prefer not to waste my time signing up for an ID.
Look just chill out,THERE HAVE BEEN BAD FLUS BEFORE AND ALL OF US OVER 50 HAVE HAD SOME PUKIN FLUS THAT ARE WRENCHING! bUT IF YER GONNA GET IT YER GONNA GIT IT AND NO MASK IS GONNA HELP. BE RIGHT WITH CHRIST AND LIVE FREE! GOD BLESS US, ONE AND ALL!!!
get a freaking grip people.
The onslaught of a pandemic is another reason to believe we are living in the "end times." People read your Bible. It is all there in black and white. Every prophesy that has been written in God's Word that predicts the coming of Christ to "rapture" His Church has occurred. If you do not want to be alive during the Great Tribulation, please read your Bible and learn how to become a Christian. Number 1: Accept that you are a sinner. Number 2: Believe Jesus Christ died for your sins. Number 3: Confess your sins and accept him as your savior. If you will confess your sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive you. Pray and be watchful.
They're saying it's a new virus...does that actually mean that they have never seen it before? Or does it mean that it's new in a sense that it just isn't that common? What would vaccinations include?
I think it's like "THE STAND" By Steven King. Well that was based on a true story, almost. The Government cold have and almost did release the flu in a certain area to see how the people would react. But thank God they adjusted the Strains of the so called flu. Nothing like ORANGE disease that was tested on our own soilders, that took a little longer. I guess if it came in from another country that could be terroist. Easiest way to get in these days is through Mexico and the Garillias.
I ALSO BELIEVE THE BIBLE SPEAKS OF SUCH THINGS AS THE END OF TIME NEARS. I ALSO KNOW THAT GOD IS OUR ONLY HOPE FOR EVERYTHING. RIGHT NOW, MY HUSBAND IS DYING FROM STOMACH CANCER. NOTHING COULD BE WORSE THAN THAT!!!!
I hope you have all made a will. After that start PRAYING.
I think we should adopt Japan's attitude when it comes to being sick. The SICK people wear mask to keep the health people from contracting it. I know with the flu you don't always know until it's too late, but there are always those people who come to work sick. I have to also agree with the posts about illegal immigration. My first thought was Mexico, I wonder if the borders will be watched a little closer now. This may be just a virus, but this is a prime example of how other unwanted death tools could be transported! And to those talking about the wealthy travelers being quarantined, many countries are off limits to travel due to such illnesses or require quarantine, maybe we should put Mexico on the no travel list with the State Department.
Concerned about your childs health. Contact your schools nurse. Where I live there has been 3 school closings due to the amount of children with flu ? symptoms, nausea, vomiting etc. These schools have had to be completely disinfected before the children return. Teachers have also contracted symptoms. Due to spring weather and the blooming season many people with seasonal allergies may be treated or go untreated for the respriatory symptoms.
OMG, We're all going to DIE..... at 70, 80, 90+
My husband had a liver transplant in January, 2009. Common sense will tell you he needs to follow special precautions. Does anyone have any ideas what I should do? Please, if you have to be sarcastics or mean, please don't respond. Thank you.
Question: I had a student go to Puerta Vallarta Mexico over Spring break (the week before Easter). She came back and was fine for one week. The following week she was out of school Wednesday-Friday. Her mom emailed me & said she has high fevers & has a bad flu. She threw up & had blisters in her mouth. Over the weekend her fever went away; but, then shot up Sunday night and she missed school on Monday. She came to school last Tuesday and brought something to rinse her mouth out before lunch to help with her blisters. She's been doing this Tuesday - Friday. She was very tired all week in class; but, no more fevers. Just cough that has gotten better. How do we know if she didn't have the swine flu, since she was not tested because we didn't hear about this until this weekend? Is she still contageous if her symptoms are better? Would she have had the swine flu if her symptoms are better?
I have a friend who is a pilot for a major airline and he was not thrilled to find out he has a flight to Mexico this week and has to spend the night there. If Mexico seems to be where this started and is spreading, why are we sending people from here in there to come in contact with this and possibly bring more of it back to the US????
LOL... some people have no clue to facts. The aids virus did not start with the Tuskeegee Airmen. Here is an article to help you understand the FACTS.
When Did AIDS Begin?

Location: the central African city of Leopoldville, now called Kinshasa, shortly before the waves of violent rebellion that followed the liberation of the Belgian Congo. A seemingly healthy man walked into a hospital clinic to give blood for a Western-backed study of blood diseases. He walked away and was never heard from again. Doctors analyzed his sample, froze it in a test tube and forgot about it. A quarter-century later, in the mid-1980s, researchers studying the growing AIDS epidemic took a second look at the blood and discovered that it contained HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

And not just any HIV. The Leopoldville sample is the oldest specimen of the AIDS virus ever isolated and may now help solve the mystery of how and when the virus made the leap from animals (monkeys or chimpanzees) to humans, according to a report published last week in Nature. Dr. David Ho, director of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center in New York City and one of the study's authors, says a careful genetic analysis of the sample's DNA pushes the putative origin of the AIDS epidemic back at least a decade, to the early '50s or even the '40s.
I am a former EMT of 15 years of Service and we were never trained for a Pandemic. I guess it's every person for themself, which is'nt right, or even ethical. I do
know that in the event it turns pandemic, the Higher Ups in our Society will get first serve for any immunizations while the remainder of us will have to suffer the consequences if they run out of the vaccines. That's a given. Hey, no one lives forever...We all have to go sometime, but I'd rather live for another 40 years or so.
Is there ANYTHING we can do to be safe. Any and all advice on taking care of myself to stocking the pantry, what should a person do? Please don't respond with there is nothing I can do. I would rather not hear a response.
why is everyone trying to find someone to blame? most of you need to be trying to learn how to spell.
I think if you keep water and some canned goods on hand you would be in good shape. From what I understand, so far it is milder in the US. We just need to keep abreast of the situation. One doctor said he like Relenza and Tamiflu to help relieve the symptoms but I believe you have to take it within 48 hours. Wash those hands often and carry some antibacterial spray in your pocket or purse. If there is an outbreak in your area be sure to avoid large public gatherings. I don't believe God causes these things. I believe bad things happen to good people because we live in a fallen world. We can take precautions but for those who believe in Jesus, we all know ultimately where we are going. Whether it be with an illness or old age. Trust in God and use common sense. A great site that is updated constantly is teh Denter for Disease Control. http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/investigation.htm
Dear God, I just pray that you will be with everyone who has left a comment here tonight. I pray for the ones who are truly scared and don't know what to do. I also pray for the ones who just need more knowledge on swine flu. God you know I am a mother of 4 beautiful children and God I pray that you will keep us all safe and healthy through this time. God I also want to add that I know that everyone in this entire world will not die one second sooner or later than they are suppose to. Please let everyone take comfort in knowing that. Most of all Lord I pray for your WILL whatever that may be.
God Bless everyone who reads this. God bless everyone who chooses not to.
Amen,
30 yr old mom of 4 from Indiana
ps. please have respect, don't reply to me with negativity. Just pray with me. ok?
Beautifully prayed! I am praying right there with you.
From Tennessee
I am leaving on an international flight and one of my stops is in Newark Liberty in NY....Does anyone know how the situation is at the airports..? I am taveling with 3 children...I am very concerned...
This is rediculous. All you ignorant american people really think it is the illegals doing this? You guys are stupid, and selfish. You all deserve to be infected if you keep thinking that. Instead you should relax and worry about your own lives. Don't blame the helpless for YOUR problems.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH EVERYONE ? IT'S SIMPLE WASH HANDS ALL THE TIME KEEP HOME CLEAN AND LOVE ONE ANOTHER ,IT MAY COME BACK TO YOU AND MIGHT NOT GET SICK AT ALL. POINTING THE FINGER ON SOMEONE IS WRONG . BE CLEAN AND BE KIND AND STAY ALIVE GOD CARES . BLESS YOU ALL . DON'T PANIC ..
I've been reading alot of these comments. I've seen things like "the end is near" and how "you should all get infected if you blame the illegals" I think everyone needs to calm down. I myself, amd very anxiety prone and have to take meds for it. I'm scared like heck now from reading this, I'm gonna wash my hands every minute of the day now. And as ridiculous as I thought the using of the mask was, now I think I'm gonna go by a whole bunch, I wish people would stop saying how the end is near, you don't realize how it can affect someone. Now I'm having an anxiety attack, and I'm terrified. If everyone would just go to the doctor, drink lots of liquids, wash hands and disinfect things often and get enough rest hten maybe things will get better.
I have to say that this swine flu is scaring me. People need to start watching the news. To those who are dumb enough to blame illegal immigrants....are you serious?? Act like adults. You can't be blaming others. So far the cases that have been reported in the US are from people who visited Mexico. We should stay calm. At a time like this we need to do what it takes to keep our familes safe. wash your hands, cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing, stay away from sick people. I'm no expert but this is what I have been hearing in the news. I just hope this flu dies down. God Bless everyone.
Haha I love all the soccer moms worrying too much about this. Let's just blame the Mexicans and the terrorists, get your minds out of the gutter. This is just a way for control of the world population, this is how mother Earth keeps itself healthy. call me cold or psycho, but it's true, the world is overpopulated and it needs to take care of itself and run its course. If your body isn't that healthy it might be your turn, there's no known cure for it as of now, meaning our bodies aren't designed to fend off this virus, you could do whatever you want but I don't think washing your hands and taking airborne will save you from an unknown, hybrid, rapidly-growing virus pandemic, aimirite aimirite?
Get a job. The people who are dying are probably immunocomprimized or elderly.
Praise God for Anonymous from Indiana (and Tennessee) and any others that have included the blessing of God in this post. If you don't believe, it's not up to me to force you to conform to my belief system. That's not what I'm here for. However, as a child of God, I think it important to share this prayer and this blessing with anyone who has an open heart. If this is not you, as stated by Anonymous from Indiana, save the negativity and just scroll to the next comment as this may not be for you. For all others, I thank you in advance for your participation in this prayer:
I pray that God prepares us for whatever His divine will may be. I pray that all of us will be insightful enough to take any precautions possible to further prepare for and prevent the spread of this and any other illness that may arise. I pray we accept some accountability for ourselves, our children and one another and that we steer clear of blaming/judging our brothers and sisters, regardless of ethnicity. I pray that we educate where appropriate and assist our fellow man/woman/child whenever possible. I also pray that we KEEP OUR FAITH intact and that we do not succumb to the fear mongering that is perpetuated in the mass media.
Whether you believe these are the "last days" or not is neither here nor there, but until we know exactly what we are dealing with, it would behoove us to be calm, smart and lastly, but certainly not least, stay PRAYED UP! May peace and continued Blessings be amongst you all!

Js here again...from the previous post. If anyone would like to share some meaningful commentary or would like to pray, I can be reached at rhapitup@gmail.com.
Thanks again and God bless!
be worried be very worried people.
this one is designed to cull the worlds population . man made for humans ..so poetic. good luck
The Bible states that "..if my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." II Chronicles 7:14. It's time we all hit our knees and cry out to the Lord on behalf of our nation. God loves you my friends, He gave His one and only Son for you, believe in Jesus and you will be saved. Don't wait another minute!
I thought this was a medical information web site, it seems to me that it is becoming more of a political one. I have 5 children, when they are sick, we go to the doctor, and I keep them from school. We are a family of seven and not rich by any means. If you are sick, have common sense please. There are county hospitals which people can go to, and free clinics. I don't understand why people are blaming borders, terrorists etc. Are these people keeping you from washing your hands, using toilet seat covers etc? I was just wondering.
Please do not leave derogatory remarks, there was a child that had posted here. Lets be respectful of everyone.
"Pan" in pandemic comes from panic. 100 people in Mexico have died, while officially there are probably by now over 2,000 cases. Nothing like SARS or anything except what normal influenza causes.
Jeebus Christmas, people.
paranoia may destroy ya.
Has anybody thought to tell people how to wash their hands properly?
Most people think just a 5 second handwash is fine, but if your serious about it, the proper way to wash your hands is, plenty of warm water and soap, scrub for at least 20 seconds, and rinse well.
EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF!!!!!!!!!!!
thats what it us gets for letting people here that should not be here
I have several cats in my house....Can they get it from eating birds and then bringing it into my house? right now I am so scared, I won't even leave my house. I have all the windows taped and sealed, plus I installed several HEPA filters into my furnace to try and prevent this virus from entering my home. I am constantly spraying everything down with Lysol and cleaning with bleach. I have ordered my masks but am afraid to receive them from the FEDEX guy when they show up. Is this really a terrorist attack against our great nation?
We had a swine flu scare in the early 70's, we were even vaccinated. Wonder if this strain is blocked at all by the regular flu shots that we get?
Common sense is the best approach, but I do wish no one in my family was flying right now!
Please, everyone, don't immediately run to the ER with every cough and sniffle. Our ER's are already overwhelmed. Not everyone needs to be seen with the flu, only those who CANNOT get on top of their symptoms, ie., dehydration or persistent, worsening cough. I'm sure we don't have enough "Tamiflu" like drugs to treat everyone anyway. Save it for those who need it: very old, very young or immune compromised. We won't be able to treat those that need it if everyone goes to the doctor.
i think that everyone doessnt need to freak unless its in your state/country... i am a ND resident and until a breakout happens than dont worry... allthogh if i were to live in NY or OH or something i wouldnt worry too muchh cuz any ssensible person out of the 20 or so is probably at home
its the goverment testing plagues to reduce the worlds population.
Don't be alarmed - just see dr. if needed, be healthy, and take your vitamens.
My husband & I got a high fever and horrible flemmy chest cold and lost our voices for several days & were coughing up yellow/clear mucous. We never go to the dr as we are generally healthy, but were planning to due to the severity of the cold -however, just after a week, we began slowly getting our health back and are now well. We used aromatherapy (RC & cinnamon bark), cough medicine, vitamins, and orange juice.
No one knows if it was the Swine Flu, but all that matters is we have our health back. (from Eastern PA)
Everyone is saying "dont panick" but the news and headlines make it very difficult not to. People just need to know that there are still "regular" flu viruses around right now and that I dont recommend going to the ER unless yours or your loved ones illness has not appeared to get better after 4-5 days. If you have a fever stay home, if your children have a fever dont send them to daycare or school. We can stop this if everyone works together. thre needs to be a charity fund for people who get seriously ill and cant afford to miss work. ok thats all. Hand sanitizer guys.get a pocket size bottle and use it often. My son has one in his backpack that he uses at school.
I think the pandemic is irrational fear! Looking at the posts here people will create fear over anything. Flu is the flu...it is often fatal in poor countries like Mexico, where medical attention is almost non-existent. Most people get over ANY flu in short period of time, regardless of the hype. Few get ill and die, but this is true of any disease. Bad cases are rare, but in those cases hospitals pump you up with antibiotics and fluids, and your body eventually fights off the bug. The very young and elderly obviously have higher risks since their bodies are not as strong. But the poor people in places like Mexico get the flu, it moves to pneumonia and they are not treated in time, given good or any antibiotics, so their chances are greatly reduced. Relax people!
"SWINE FLU" isnt really dangerous unless its not treated thats why mexico's people are dying. Its becuase they have horrible heath care and they have to keep working even if there sick. IM not really scared of this "Pandemic" becuase only 20 people have it and none died. SO dont worry its no the apocoplyse. Its NOT the END OF THE WORLD SO YOU CAN STOP DRINKING. ITs just like the regular flu.
-Jimmy May
I have no spleen which means I can not fight of certain bacteias. Should I be more concerned than others?
Let's cross this bridge when we get to it. No need to borrow trouble just go on with life everyone. This to will pass.
go to plan for flu.com
if the dose go world wide and it if you can get it airborn we might have to start burning the dead boddies
WebMD readers: God created us and the miracle vessels we live our day to day existence-our bodies. Equipped with all the combat gear that we need and best of all, it learns new strategies to survive without our even thinking about it.
It's "our thinking" that gets in the way all the time. Did you know that looking on the bright-side of things can actually make you more resistant to disease?
Worry, anxiety, hate etc... have the ability to make your bodies more susceptible to diseases/viruses. Over use that hand sanitizer, along with the anti-bacterial soaps, dish detergent, wipes, and the "pink stuff" given to kids for any reason they don't feel well, and what you have is the strongest survivors of the bacteria/viruses left. Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.
Prayer can help. Give your worries to God or talk it out with a level-headed friend. Life is suppose to be a struggle at all levels, here in the "upper level" as well at the micro-level, just part of God's grand design. No-the end times are not coming.
Washing your hands (include suds), encapsulates germs and viruses and down and out they go. Proper hygiene and watchful parental instruction with a good dose of common sense is what is needed when these things come along. Too much worry just robs your natural defenses of their ability to keep one healthy.
Relax, read or consult a medical person and don't add to unnecessary panic that seems to be growing at a faster rate than the virus. To those who see conspiracy in everything that happens, return to your AREA 51 blog havens and brethren, as your thought processes are too warped for what should be a "health-focused" information discussion.
Peace to all.
Swine flu from Mexico? Another very good reason to stop the illegal immigrants from getting through. How about legalizing the crossover so the people can be checked for illnesses before being let through, or sent back or taken to hospitals if carrying contagious illnesses. There is no kindness to anyone when people-borne illnesses are allowed to enter this country. One other question: is the combination of human, pig, and bird viruses a natural evolutionary result or man-made? If man-made, there is someone or some organization that needs to be made culpable ASAP!
My 13 year old was really sick after spring break after being in a indoor water park. I blamed that he had high fever vomiting and very watery green diarrhea. They took a stool sample and nothing had grown yet ,that was about a week ago he is better now but missed that whole week of school. I have never seen him so sick we have never been to Mexico.I wonder if he had it or how do they test for it?
i agree with many of the opinions posted, i do belive that this flu is reason to concern, take extra precautions like washing your hands more often, but it is not reason to concern. I do strongly believe that now is a good time for our goverment to bring up universal health care once again, i believe some socialized medicine would do us some good in this economy anyway. the issue that this virus is being brought over the border from Mexico is fesible and i do belive that it is true. but i think we need to give this some time, to let reaserchers and scientists to learn more about this virus, who knows it could be a bug that carries it, if its from birds and humans, some type of parasite like a mosquito could have gotton the flue virus from a human, then the birds, combinding the two creting this swine flue. but thats just a guess, im only 15 what do i know?
Wow everyone slow down a little! Wash your hands often keep your children's hands clean, teach them to sneaze into a tissue or their sleeve. Stay home if your sick, call your dr.if your real sick. Listen to the news for updates and stop panicking!
Comment about closing the borders so Americans can have more Jobs . There wouldn't be any jobs for any other counties if our Americans would go to work . We have to many lazy American people !!
People who don't finish their meds are a big problem when it comes to the mutation of viruses. And how many people really wash their hands ,disinfect door knobs or their phones? And not everyone can stay at home when they are ill. This is the reality you will loose your job for missing to many days. Where I work if you miss 3 days you have to take a leave of abcence, and are only allowed 2 a year.
MEN THIS STUFF FREAK ME OUT..!
I live in Winnipeg Manitoba (Canada) we have not heard that its here yet but i take the transit and it kind of screard me .... is it safe at this point or no?
America is born of immigrants, should we return everyone, there are illegal and legals, do you want to lock down all US borders and not let anyone in or out?
That would be much better wouldn't it?
You can't stop the spread of a virus like that, there are precautions just follow them, fear breathes anger, hate, and violence.
My son had flu-like symptons a couple a weeks ago, but he is better now. His doctor told us that he had the stomach flu. Should I be worried?? And should I take him back just to make sure he is ok?
swine flu has killed millions before. just like the black death from the medevil days this one can kill and has. some one once told me that only about 10% of deaths cosed by something like this are reported the other 90% is what makes it deadly. you only see some of it so lets see out of 1300+ known cases only 103 have died. turn 1300 into say 1,000,000 and the death toll will be off the chart everyone needs to do all the can to stop this now and not later
Ok. So everyone needs to calm down and think clearly. First of all... this is not a political virus or an act of terrorism. It is a virus just like the common cold virus. Some cases are a bit more dangerous than others. The people in Mexico that have died from this virus did not have the health care and understanding of how to deal with virus' that we do in the US. I am currently laying in bed today suffering from flu like symptoms. Do I think the terrorist or Mexicans did this to me. NO! I think I caught a seasonal cold and I am being cautious by reading what the internet has to say about it. Some of the posted responses on this website made me laugh and made me mad. How can people make a virus into a political issue. That's just plain dumb. Come on people! If you have been sick with the flu for more than a few days, go see your doctor to get a piece of mind. Otherwise, do what the nurses and doctors said to do.... Drink plenty of fluids! Wash your hands often! And get plenty of rest! We are all gonna be fine.
ok so anyone can answer my question! since there is not case known in Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada) you guy's think its safe to take the public transit?
Thanks!!!! : )
well. Although I think it is very healthy to get on here and chat about our worries... i do think some people should have some tact! I'm a mother, a wife, a daughter, a friend... all those things everyone on here is bragging about as well! Does it help or just scare the CRAP outta people when we start throwing words out their like TERRORist attack and BLACK DEATH and 1918 pandemic... ok ok ok. For all you out there so scared your ready to shit a brick, the people who DIED died within 48 hours of contracting the disease. so calm down. If you've had a flu for weeks.. your fine! I'd just stay inside, and don't expose urself to anything else. Plus.. ppl with the swine flu will prolly be in the ER anyways.. and everyone else and their brother with any flu- because thier panicked its swine.
I just watched the news today. They showed coverage of 90,000 people going into the U.S from mexico... how happy does that make everyone? People We work with work in the US and live in MEXICO.. what can you do? you cannot stop living... what can YOU do about it? i guess wear a mask for the rest of your life? Or you can just cross your fingers that u won't be one of the unlucky.
Don't turn into one of those people afraid to live~ aka.. don't leave your home or send ur kids to school b/c of the swine flu.. don't get in a car because it might crash.. don't live on the ocean because of tsunami's, don't live in mississippi because of huricanes.. don't like in michigan because of tornadoes.. get my drift? its just the luck of the draw. Try to take deep breaths guys and worry about what you CAN control
I love the insane amount of conspiracy theorists and crazy folk that are posting on here. Its the liberals getting rid of the conservatives to create a socialist world. Or its God doing one of two things bringing about Judgment or population control. Either that or its the mexicans hoping the boarding in a terrorist attack to kill all of us hard working good americans. People only 200 have died in mexico. there has yet to be a death any where else. and unless the Mexicans are terrorizing themselves i doubt theres much to worry about. as for Obama killing the conservatives to create a Socialist nation. He must have put the virus in the wrong country. I feel no need to adress the Crazy jesus fanatics. Population control really? God has just decided to start offing people and not the old that are well on their way. But the teenagers because that makes sense. Just stop its no different then sars or the bird flu. It is a flu like sickness that will be taken care of like any other flu. calm down.....although in all reality its a cover up for the zombie apocolypse.
gnat4...
You mentioned that since people won't control the population then maybe God is doing this to do what people won't. I find that ironic since some of the largest families that I know of are Christians with very strong beliefs.
I believe that our country should follow Japan's lead. They are are taking temperatures of everyone flying into their country when they get off the plains. So why can't we do the same? Including people crossing the borders.
I also read someones blog that mentioned that only the people with poor immune systems have to worry about dying from this. That isn't true, because this mutated flu affects the immune systems in healthy people, so that they can't fight it off either. It was explained in an earlier blog written by "SaigonShadow".
As for people that have been vaccinated in the past for the swine flu or other flues....those vaccines will not help you for this flu. That's why they have new flu shots every year...because the virus changes, mutates every year. I also don't understand why the news and everyone else keep calling this "the swine flu" because it isn't just the swine flu. Maybe they should call it the "S.H.A. flu" or something closer to what it really is.
Btw....one more tidbit of info for you. Some airlines are actually reducing the cost of their flights to Mexico. I find that totally ridiculous. I for one wouldn't take a chance of flying there at this point in time...but I happen to value my life more than that...maybe I'm just funny that way but I call it logic.
For the people that think it is the end of the world.....GET A GRIP!
The best we can all do is be careful and logical.
Be Safe and Well Everyone!
I am an EMT; my husband is a nurse and a paramedic. We are also no a volunteer fire department. We have received training and are kept up to date on what is going on. I have received three notices already about the flu and how my state is starting to prepare. The best thing anyone can do is to STAY HOME IF YOU ARE SICK. Practice your hand washing and covering your mouth AND nose when sneezing or coughing. I am not worrying now, but am more concerned about this fall and what might come.
As for blaming Mexico... most bad flu seasons started in highly populated areas such as Mexico City and the higher populated areas will most likely be hit harder.
People are so judgmental it crazy. A lady links a Fox News report on Swine Flu and he is sure it is something false or misleading without even reading it. What she posted was the US CDC statement and a statement from the White House and nothing about any party or illegal aliens.
I have more of a question than a comment (not sure if this is the place to post it or if you will answer, but I'm not sure where else to do so.)
How normal might it be to find this swine flu in the general population? In other words, is it possible that one of the reasons we are finding so many cases is that we are LOOKING?
If this is the case, it might well put things into a little better perspective and calm some of the fears.
I don't think this has anything to do with mexican immigrants. As some people are saying because the ones who have it in the US are mostly tourists that came from mexico but they are not mexicans. But does anyome actually know where this began
If everyone washed their hands often (especially after using the restroom and before eating) and covered their coughs and sneezes, there would be very little reason to worry about this. Help keep this virus from spreading by washing your hands with soap and warm water and teach your children to wash theirs. A little bit of hygiene goes along way to prevent all kinds of illnesses.
Swine, schmine.......this virus is the flu, plain and simple. You catch it, you get sick, you "ralph" alot, and you move on. Not a bit scared to get it!!!! Not being "Macho", just know that we all have a time to go, and if I (or YOU) are called upon to exit this Earth, guess what..........YOU ARE GOING TO EXIT! Oh, it's going to happen, might as well embrace the journey and be excited for what comes after. I am super excited to see what comes next. (but, would'nt mind stickin around for now).
Yes,SagionShadow that's really scary.
Amanda, If you called your doctor and they said that you cannot get in until next week you MUST report them to DHEC! And you need to find a doctor that is taking this matter seriously. Any reputable, professional, informed doctor will get you in within the hour. This is a serious matter.
If you are having HIGH FEVER + COLD SYMPTOMS....you should see your doctor immediately. If you cannot get into the doctor's office go to an urgent care or ER.
To the person who was afraid they would lose their job, before you keep worrying about what will happen immediately have your wife be tested at DHEC. If she doesn't have the swine flu and isn't contagious she can keep going to work and if she does have it and the boss insists she comes to work she will have a wonderful civil lawsuit against him should she be fired. It is a serious threat to the public for an employer to insist a person with a potentially deadly disease come to work. You must find out first what she has. It could be nothing and probably is.
those of you panicing about the deaths in Mexico, look at the whole picture. Mexico is not actually the cleanest link in this whole flu scenario. Calm down..panic is what triggers all casualities. I am 57 yrs. old and I am far from panicky and I live in Texas...Corpus Christi for that fact..I am just going to live my life the same way I have every day ...and I think not only myself but everyone else will be fine.
How many more cases would be reported if everyone had access to a doctor? I've had the flu since Friday and I'm hoping it's just the normal variety, but I'll never know because I don't have insurance, don't have the cash for a walk-in clinic and can't deal with the bills that come after an ER visit. On top of all this I still have to work. I'm sure I'm not the only one in this situation so this outbreak could be much worse than is being reported.
I just want to know who do they think is going to believe that bird flue pig flue and human flue all mixed togeater on their own accord and mysteriously got out? some scientist accidently on purpose probaly let some rat bird or pig out infected with that crap to see what would happen they need to tell that crap about we don't know how this could happen to some one else who will believe it not me
Come on people we all need to open our eyes and see what is going on!!! This seems to be terroist attacks on the u.s. There have been so many things that have happened recently to healthy people like pnemonia and horrible flus swine disease, mrsa which has killed more people than aids which is highly contagious as well and not to mention the economy we are being broken down piece by piece...I think we all should be wearing protective clothing masks and gloves and also be very careful were we go and what we eat...we need to all start preparing for the worst...and hope for the best!!!
I am a Registered Nurse. Everyone who has talked about hand washing is right on. Stay home if you are sick. Like the "old" days, this may come to families being quarantined; either because they are sick or because they aren't. My church believes in food storage and has been warning members to bump up their food storage for over a year now. I agree with pattydeboun, stock up on food and water so if a quarantine is imposed your family will have enough food to make it through.
I have 2 young children and I clean with bleach and make everyone in my house including me wash thier hands a million x'S A DAY and we also use lysol and even clean with bleach and water everwhere and we still get viruses and get sick it does not stop diseases from entering your home or family...It may reduce your chances but thats all money is the most philthy thing you can touch. why aren't people who handle money told to wear gloves to handle money..so that our chances are reduced of it spreading and what is being done to protect the rest of us that don't have it yet? I guess we are on our own!!!
i have had a cough and a slight runny nose and threw up once just a little like not even enough to raise any flags and its been like this since saturday im 13 and this is my 1st day back at school after break, i did not go to mexico, but a few people in my school did do you think i have swine flu???
I like the swine flu!!!!!!
My pet pig was acting kind of funny so i dipped him in bleach. Now he's acting really sick and turned a funny blue color before he puked and rolled over. Do you think he has the flu?
I think the DOD's jumbo jet did a viral laydown in NYC today. That's the very same plane that flew low over skyscrapers today and scared New Yorkers.
I realize people are scared of Swine flu but I'm a nurse on a Med Surg floor and I take care of people on a daily basis with illnesses that I am more scared of. We isolate them in the hospital but guess what, when they go home they go to the grocery store and every other public place imagineable. I am talking about things like MRSA, VRE, and who knows what else. They are just as contagious being carriers and they might not look ill.
I'm freaking out because I have a severely compromised immune system. I worry in general because I know I can catch even basic things likes colds. But I'm especially afraid of something like swine flu. I wash my hands repeatly every day and use a gallon of hand sanitizer (I do that anyway). I'm still recovering from a bout with septic shock. It was a hard battle and I'm not sure I'm up for another one yet. So, yeah, I'm really worried about this flu.
WHY is Napolitano in charge of this??? When it comes to anything pertinent to this Country, she is always on the fence. Before everyone panics in response to the Swine Flu, how about people start using their intelligence? Simple precautions and a smart approach to life's daily crises' is what gets everybody through a disaster. Napolitano has absolutely nothing which would contribute to the greater good and health of the Citizens of the USA--Absolutely useless and an embarrassment to the females who do good for our Citizens.
If you get flu symptoms, go to a walk-in clinic or (and you'd really rather avoid this) the ER, IF YOU CAN'T GET TO YOUR OWN DOC WITHIN 48 HOURS. The time is important because the anti-flu virus drugs Tamiflu (pills) and Relenza (an inhaler) will make for a MUCH milder case if either one is started within 48 hours of when symptoms begin, but won't help much after. In other words, the sooner, the better! And once you get home and start on your meds, drink fluids and then make like a bear and crawl under the covers for a little hibernation. Here's what NOT to do: try to tough it out and go to work. You'll risk a bad case (which can do you in) and just spread the bug all over the place. NOT GOOD. (By the way, I'm an MD and, yes, we get the flu too.)
AAAHHH!!! IT'S GOING TO KILL US ALL!!! I need a beer.
I've been sick since last saturday night... I went to the doctor and got to antibotics shots plus they put me on antibiotics.Sill no relif... My body is really feeling tired every day after school I'm a Senior in high school... My symptoms are runny nose, and conjestion in the chest with whezzing, headache,101.4 fever that's the highest it's got.But not to metion my troat is so sore I try and drink cold water it hurt like I don't know what... And my body and my joint's are really aching ... When I get ready for school in the morning I wake up sweating.. My pillow and cover feel like someone have just pour water on me that's how bad I've have been sweating all night and the temperture is stable in the house hold... It's like the shot's they gave are not working and I'm through taking my antibotics by mouth. I just don't know what to do???? I'm only 18... If anybody have these sytptoms please give me a real response not jost no gesture because I've been dealing with this long enough... From Bama girl
I hate to get Political as well but I don't think it's a coincidence that the last time we had a pandemic like this was in 1918 not too long after 1913 when the Federal Reserve had assumed power after staging the great depression kind of like oh yeah hey our current Recession/Depression. Also I advise everyone to go to You Tube & do a quick search for Population Stabilization
stockpiling tamiflu "just in case" is a bad idea. If you take it preventatively, it can lower your body's ability to actually make use of the drug if indeed you do become sick. AND, since manufacturers can only make so much at a time, you may be taking it away from someone who really IS sick. and masks? Unless the mask is airtight, and surgical masks are not, viruses can pass thru them. If you do wear a mask, use it for only a few hours and do not re-use it. But you are wasting your money. Before you blogged, did you actually READ the article?
and all you doomsday prophets and religious fanatics should take your preaching and predictions elsewhere. this is not the appropriate forum.
PS to Philip S - the Great Depression started in 1929 and lasted somewhat until 1939/40. It was a decade AFTER the 1918 flu pandemic. Come on people! If you're not sure, look it up. Please do not comment unless you know your facts.
we are going to San Antonio in two days, I havent had a vacation in 2 years and recently got laid off so I was really looking forward to going but now I am scared for me and my kids.
Dear Bama Girl,
Antiobiotic shots will do absolutely nothing, repeat NOTHING for a virus. Sounds like you might have mono. Mononucleosus is a virus so antibiotics will not work. However, instead of relying on internet advice, call your physician! Tell him/her you are still not better and want to see him. Ask about getting antibiotics if you have a viral infection (virus). At 18, you are old enough to take care of yourself so do it! And, nothing to do with the topic of this blog, but as a high school senior, your spelling and grammar should be much better than they are. Try some remedial reading.
i am so scared of swine because i caught it
I am a 75 year old White Woman. I did have the Swine/Bird Flu. There is no doubt in my mind about it. 5 weeks ago I woke up so very Sick I thought I would Die before the day ended. I hurt all over my Body. I have some underlying Chronic Illnesses and confined to a Wheel Chair due to a Botched Back Surgery and automobile Rear End Accident. I was Nauseated, no Appetite, Headache. I woke up one morning at 4:00 AM I was so cold I could not put my hand out of the covers to turn on my Touch Lamp. I believe with all of my heart that I was in the Dying Process. I finally forced myself out of bed and to put on a warm Robe and kept moving. I still have it, but not as bad as I had it for the first 5 weeks. I was completly . I am Religious, but not a Fanatic. I just Pray that there is a way to stop it before it doesany more damsge.
I say, everyone STAY in their OWN country!! That way there the USA would not be at such a risk!!!!
I have an important question:
How long does it take for symptoms to appear after we have been exposed to the virus? What is the incubation period of the virus?
Shouldn't people who have been exposed be isolated to prevent further spread of the virus?
Did anyone else remember hearing about a lab in Maryland having a missing virus sample a few weeks ago? A company based in MD developed a technology that could instantly detect avian flu about 3 years ago. I tried to look at their website yesterday and it was unavailable. They also got a government contract for over $800,000 in 2008. Conspiracy theorists, why aren't you making this connection? Biiowarn, LLC
Sorry, one i, www.biowarnllc.com
Not saying they had anything to do with it or that they were the lab missing a virus, just surprised no one thought of this when so many are so panicked
First of all whoever talked about stock piling Tamiflu. You obviously never have taken it. Because I can tell ya, it makes perfectly healthy people who happened to live in the same house with someone with the flu. SICKER THAN THE DARN RELATIVE WITH THE FLU!! It is nasty. It is vile. It doesn't work unless of course you want to be sicker than the person with the flu? I have a compromised immune system as does my 15 yr old daughter. We both have beta thalasemia. My husband has had a recent heart attack. I wouldn't take the flu shots, the tamiflu, or any of the drug company's crap ever again. Stop blaming the illegals. If indeed they did carry it across it's only because our drug companies gave it to them! You think your doc is doing you a favor when he writes you a script for the " newest" drug on the market?? Wake up idiots... he gets a kickback every time he scratches out a script!! You ought to be looking at these drug co's that are losing billions on the drugs being re-called and taken off the market. Because if the truth ever comes out... you'll see it's the drug companies making themselves some more billions!! After all they have to make up for all the money they are losing with the new drug plans!!!
They are saying incubation is 24-48 hours, so if you are exposed, you'll start seeing symptoms within that time frame. CDC.gov has a GREAT web-site, it even has an interactive map, with your States Emergency Preparedness info...no need to get rude or ignorant to people asking common sense questions...we all need to be SMART, and prepare for the worst...not panic. We've been told by the government for quite some time to prepare ourselves for ANY emergency...I live in Idaho, and in March we had "spring-breakers" return from Mexico...93 students ended up out sick...we have smaller rural schools, so this is concerning...I believe this virus has been around (U.S.) longer than anyone is reporting or knows...they are finding it has been in Mexico since Feb,09.Hour by hour, more info is coming out. DON"T PANIC, put your energy into use, think straight, and do the right things...use some common sense, stay calm, gather supplies, etc...be healthy and safe!
Take reasonable precautions, and don't panic. The media is making this seem like the end of the freaking world. For cryin' out loud, just use some common sense.
They are also saying this virus is moving too fast to isolate all those exposed...we all move around ALOT everyday, and touch many things, grocery carts, money, door knobs, etc...just be smart, wash your hands, hand sanitizer can be used also, don't touch your mouth, nose, etc...
Okay, I never had any issues with immagrints comming to the US. this is an amazing place to live. But honestly, right now i think the best thing we can do is cut off any travleing with mexico. Period. It sounds really crazy, i know but if that is where all ofthis started in the first place, then why are they still letting people into our country who could potentialy be carrying this virus. Now im nrmaly not a omg what if freak, but i have a child to think about. a husband. And i bet some people wuldnt think the messures were so extreme if one of their loved ones was killed by the virus now would they?
Wow terroist attacks, i highly doubt that, no on else is smarter than the USA, look at korea they can't even launch a rocket with out it failing,
Like that one person said about it being the government, wouldn't suprise me if it is, they rule the world anyway, and there's nothing no one can do about it, if some one tried they woule be exicuted.
In my county they confirmed possibly one person with the swine flu, and then another about an hour away from where i live, but they're saying they're at home now recovering. but it's possibly, they don't know for sure i live in Texas, and they aren't even sure if it's the swine flu. So why freak out when no one knows if it is or not, my mother in law just got over a flu, and i'm always around her and i didn't cetch nothing, i don't know if it's cause i have a strong ammune system.
PEOPLE IN A TIME LIKE THIS WE SHOULD COME TOGETHER, EDUCATE OURSELVES, HELP ONE ANOTHER,PREPARE, AND IF SOMEONE NEEDS HELP...THEN HELP! THIS IS AMERICA REMEMBER? LET BE EXAMPLES.
CHRISTIANS WE ALL KNOW WHAT TO DO "PRAY" AND KEEP THE FAITH.
So they're saying this is coming from mexico huh, well if it's coming from there, why don't they stop letting people go there and people coming in the US from there, and if they need help, or doctors, why won't some doctors from the US go there and help, from what i read there's a shot for the virus, and it does help but with some side affects.
Some coutries aren't as lucky as the US is, it would be the american thing to do, is help the needy.
I have heard mexico has nasty water supply, maybe that's why they're sick, but who knows..
God I want to lift up all those who left comments once again. I especially want to pray for those who are truly scared Lord just give them peace about this so they may go on with there everyday life and not worry. I also want to pray for all the negativity in people. Another poster put that we all need to come together. Lord make everyone realize that we are all made different in the way that we think and the way that we handle things such as a "crisis". Lets help each other instead of tear each other down. And God I pray that you will once again bless anyone who reads this and especially those who don't.
Amen,
30 yr old Mom of 4 from Indiana
Regarding concerns of uninsured, unemployed, or other unfortunate circumstances; I realize every hospital across the U.S. are not the same as the ones here in Wisconsin, however, my local hospital does offer a payment plan to people, insured or not, who cannot afford to pay their bill all at once. It's worth a shot to see if your hospital or clinic offers something similar. Please do NOT forgo medical care if you are financially strapped, especially if you have children. Be optimistic, things will be OK, no matter what happens. This situation calls to attention the fact that we are not in control of anything, bad things do happen, and our fears will be preyed on. That is why more than ever we have to remember who is really in control and, with common sense like basic disease prevention methods and medical care, have faith in God. Seeing a doctor doesn't diminish your faith, God created doctors for just such an occasion as this, to help people and save lives.
Why would a lab carry bad viruses for, what the hell, they shouldn't be doing that in the first place! this is all crazy, they should kill the bad viruses so it won't harm anyone, cause look people are saying this lab lose one... wonder what else they had experminted in these labs..
Like that one movie "The Mist" Where a government project went wrong, and something bad had happened to the US...
I compleatly agree with the person who commented at 11:01 am a good attitude is everything!
I live in Canada. All of you are a little far fetched with a cat in the house with a bird, having no spleen. That stuff don't matter. It came from Mexico. Wearing a mask, gloves etc won't help. Swine flu is here.It is mentioned in the bible as end times. These pandemics will happen. I have kids and live 3 houses away from a virology lab.
The teams behind the control measures education and supply of basic materials for use such as masks should be commended for a job well done. Our responsibility as civil society is to listen to the technocrats and implement the measures they are telling us.WHO along with CDC are on the alert.I convey my sympathy to all that have been infected and affected. We in Africa and Uganda are generally scared as we have enough disease burden to add on this deadly virus.
new zealand has just confirmed 3 cases of swine flu linked to a high school trip to Mexico , and are under the assumption that the other eleven student have it as well and are all being treated on Tamiflu for 72 hours and are doing well
Each year in the U.S. 36,000 people die of the flu....that's a statistic.....so why are we making a big deal about 150 in Mexico ? I'm sure they have more
fatalities from the flu each year than the U.S.
Common sense people! Just like your mom taught you! wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and don't PICK your nose.Panic will get you no where fast!
I've always felt a tremendous responsibility for the health of our customers - I run a restaurant, so the potential of Swine Flu spreading is a huge fear I think for all of us. Yesterday, I spoke with a NP at Yale Health Plan about ways to help protect our customers. So far, I sprayed all our door knobs with Lysol, and we posted signs reminding our customers of the tree things they can do to help prevent the spread of germs, and today I will have Purell hand santizer units mounted by the kitchen, and at a few other locations. I hope we can stay on top of this and prevent spread of this dreaded virus. We send our prayers to those who have been afflicted.
I am inclined to think this is a form of biologigal/germ warfare. I live in AZ. To date there have been no reported cases. Seems like any time the WHO is mentioned, something's up. Meaning, something has been developed in a laboratory somewhere. After all, isn't this an excellent way to get peoples' minds off of the economy (globally)? As for myself, I will conduct my life as usual; take the precautions I normally take during flu and cold season. No, I will not be wearing a mask!
Everyone just settle down, there is a time to be born and a time to die. The Bible says, "Live for Christ and Die for Gain." Yes, most of us don't want to die but do not run scared and trust the Lord. The Bible says there will be things like this happening and men will run for their lives in fear. Do not be afraid, fear is not of God. Just pray and use your common knowledge in all matters.
Curious as to why the news regarding the outbreak in Mexico wasn't in the press (or to international authorities?) until after US families' return from Mexico for Spring Break?
I'm surprised by many of the comments left here. People have accessed this site in an attempt to get information. Instead, we're getting religion and immigrant issues thrown at us. Swine Flu is a disease and yes, one that needs to be taken seriously, but not to the point - yet - as a pandemic situation. I work in health care and we've been educated in regards to a pandemic. Use common sense! Wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough and if you feel it's warrented, SEE YOUR DOCTOR. He/she is the best resource for information and an accurate diagnosis. Unless YOU have the letters MD after YOUR name, don't take chances or put down the medical profession because you don't feel they know what they're doing. That's far from the truth - they know more than we do! The CDC has been doing a great job in keeping us updated. Now, if we could only get the cruise lines like Royal Carribean to cancel their cruises to Mexico...
Relax....your fear of this is causing mass hysteria. This is not the dark ages, It is the 21st century. Why do you people always react with fear? Whatever happens we will prevail.
Treat this like any other flu. Get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids, and watch plenty of tv. ANY strain of the flu virus could kill you. This one may or may not. You have to take the proper measures and don't worry so much.
WASH your hands
WASH all food that is eaten raw
WASH and disinfect phones, door knobs, light switches, faucets...anywhere that hands frequently touch. It does not hurt to be safe!
Okay everyone... It might be easy for me to say, but let's just take a deep breath! The good Lord put doctors here for a reason and; I'm more than certain that they know what they're doing--better yet dealing with. When I begin to walk the streets of New York and see that I am one of a few handful of people; then I'll panic!
I was stationed at Sheppard AFB in 1976 and it was mandatory that everyone receive what we were told was a Swine Flu vaccine. If we did receive the vaccine, could we be of any help with today's outbreak?
I have seen the news and the Swine Flu and it its bad like in New York they have 29 cases of the Swine Flu
America! Borders, language & Culture: You! are responsible for forcing your government to protect you. When the immigrants came to America they were detained at Ellis Island for health inspection, so why are we allowing the government to continually ignore the "will of the people"? You have a right to be protected, and unless this illegal migration is stopped the swine flu is not all you will need to fear. Stand up and be counted, this is not just a health issue, it's political.
JANIE FROM TEXAS;Please don't get all in a frenzy when it hasn't even came to your State or City yet? Hopefully it won't. I feel the ones who are sick should be quarantined, to their homes, simple as that. There is really nothing else you can do, say a pray and stay away from people who are sick right now. Do alot of sanitizing with lysol, and we will all be fine. If you get any symtoms go to the doctor the first day, and then stay home if you have the flu. Parents, don't send your kids to school sick, then you are risking the others to get sick.....Common sense is what it takes to not get it.......
Hey, See people with OCD like me are not so crazy... we already do all the things to prevent germs from spreading like making contagious, sick family members stay away from everyone, washing everything that has been touched by the sick person with bleach, washing bed linens, towels ect., using papertowels to clean bodily fluids, and washing hands after everything you do. Most people do not wash their hands like they should before they eat, after they have been out in public, etc. Also, people should not bring the germs into their homes by wearing the shoes and clothes that they wear outside. Have house shoes and house clothes. Don't freak out, just take precautions. Also, most schools do not make their students wash their hands before eating. Right there is a gigantic way to cut down on passing any germ or virus. I always keep wipes with me and I am always wiping my kids's hands or my own. Wipe down your cell phones... those things carry so many viruses and germs, as well as your purses etc. Clorox Anywhere cleaner is a God send. Do what you need to, but fear can also depleat your immmune systems defenses, so it is better to put your trust in a higher power and say the serenity prayer.
My God people, get a grip, go on with your lives and find something to be thankful for. God is still in control, not the flu
Folks,
Don't let the media whip you up into a frenzy of fear! This is the flu. Of the 50 or so people (50 of 300 Million isn't a large percentage of the population) in the U.S. NO ONE has died. These idiots want a crisis and if they can munufacture one they'll do it.
Rodger
I hope Pres. Obama is being watched carefully as well as his crew. So many of them were just there! Please don't spread it around Pres. Obama!
this is all very nerve racking, i think the gove should stop all travel in and out of mexico at least until this is contained .
i had several teens at my job come back from spring break . they seem in good health now but they are actually planning on going back...there is no common sense . why go back a second time if you made it back the first time in good health? i feel this puts us who choose to take precautions at greater risk of those living carelessly...
i do think there are several cases not reported and it probably has been brewing for some time now . if pple would just remember to COVER their mouths when coughing and nose when sneezing! stay home if your SICK! i work with the public and cant tell you how angry this makes me! Its common decency toward others....and teach children to do the same.
Hand washing is a must. Keep your hands away from your face and use sanitizing gel. Someone brought up the fact that schools don't make children wash their hands before eating, unless they put a sink in every class this would'nt be feasible. Put a hand gel dispencer in the lunch line... KEEP YOUR HANDS CLEAN< WASH/SANITIZE
holy crap people, CALM DOWN! formulate yourself a GAME PLAN so you don't feel like things are so out of your control. sit down and make a list of supplies you would need for staying home for a month: food that doesn't need refridgeration, pet supplies, medicines (both prescription and over the counter), things to do like books and board games.
WORST CASE SCENARIO would be if the food supply lines were disrupted and your water and electricity went off for a little while, so plan for that. flashlights, batteries, candles, empty 2-liter bottles for water (not milk jugs; they spring leaks for some reason), bleach, hand sanitizer, plastic bags for emergency toilet use...
once you have a plan, you won't freak out so much. just think of it as camping out. more than likely it will never come to that, but if you feel prepared for the worst, you can handle anything else!
My daughter works for a local hospital,in the cafateria, she says one of the employees is sick. He has flu symptoms, the supervisor does not believe the flu is as bad as they say it is and has let the employee stay. He is handleing the food that the patients, doctors and visitors are eating. I did call the administrator to report it.
I work in a laboratory in Western New York. We have tested patients for Swine Flu. The exposure is spreading.
The Swine flu is a serious illness, and yes it can be fatal.
However, with good sanitation you should be alright.
Wash your hands. Alot. When you'er not washing them, use an alcohol based sanitizer every so often. Honestly, the sanitizer takes 10 seconds. Pump a bit on your way past the container each time. You won't regret it. They also make anti-bacterial hand lotions. Which will help your chapped hands from all the washings.
If you work in a medical facitity, use N95 respirator masks. I draw blood and collect nasal swabs on these people all day long. I am constantly in a mask. I also make surgical masks, tissues, and hand sanitizer available and easily accessable to my patients.
That is your number one defense...wash, wash, sanitize, sanitize.
Also, I suggest carrying a purse sized bottle of lysol with you. Just incase you have to use a public rest room or the like. Much better safe than sorry.
Other than that, don't panic. Don't hide in a bomb shelter. This isn't a biological attack. This is a disease originating in a country with notorius lack of proper sanitation. You'll be just fine.
I have to say that after reading these comments, I am way more freaked out by all of the crazy people out there than I am of the swine flu!
lol... hey you guys think the things you have seen on the news were scary.. take a look at this.
http://turnerradionetwork.blogspot.com/2009/04/prepare-to-die-its-been-planned-and-has.html
Dunno if its just another load of Bull but its still pretty scary to watch! lol. I have 3 kids at home, 2 of which are school age and YES I do somewhat worry about whats going to come of all this... Just because I CARE about the saftey and health of my kids. DO I think that everyone should use common sense and take precautions? YES!!! Wash your hands, dont go out if your sick. I am NOT alarmed at this point because everyone (that we know of) in the U.S. has recoverd from it.. No deaths have been reported. "so far". So untill I hear that someone had DIED in the U.S. thats when I'll start wondering about all of this.. Also keep in mind that Mexico hasnt the BEST sanitation or medical care facilitys.. So some of those people that DID die most likely either died from the FEVER that you get with it, or something of that nature that anyone of US would easly go to the ER for if worse got to worse... I just dont think that mass hyterya is the answer.. lol. But thats just me. Freaking out is NOT going to CURE it.. So I just think that ppl need to chill out a little!!
the pandemic is hysteria- get a grip
An employee of ours just left Mexico (not the area affected, but still...) and was not stopped, questioned on his whereabouts in Mexico or even "how you feeling" prior to leaving the airport. Why don't we copy other countries that monitor/report the health of passengers leaving the affected countries. Other countries are screening travelers from the US.
I believe people need to take and keep a perspective on things. Every year there is a different strain, a different worry. Perhaps people need to get a bit of insightful perspective and remember good hygiene and proper hand washing techniques. If you are the panic stricken personality type, think about shopping cart handles. There are many other unknown illness causing bacteria and viruses to worry about. This is know and being studied. Level heads people.
