Egg Recall Expands: Is Your Salad Safe?
by Daniel J. DeNoon
Have you recently bought some prepared potato salad, or a ready-made sandwich? Take a look at the label. The ongoing recall of hard-cooked eggs has expanded again.
You may not think that prepared foods such as chicken salad contain eggs — but many do. Some contain the recalled cooked eggs that may be tainted with dangerous listeria bacteria.
Products recalled so far include potato salad, egg salad, pea salad, macaroni salad, spinach salad, chef salad, garden salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, and sandwiches made with these salads.
The original Jan. 26 recall of hard-cooked eggs by Minnesota-based Michael foods expanded to 34 states by Feb. 6. Since then, several companies have recalled products made with the eggs.
So far, there have been no known illnesses. But many of the products made with the eggs have not yet reached their expiration date, and may still be in home refrigerators, stores, delis, salad bars, or restaurants.
The 10- and 25-pound tubs of cooked, peeled eggs were sent to a wide range of food distributors, food service outlets, and makers/suppliers of prepared foods. It’s likely that the list of products so far recalled is not complete. The FDA keeps an updated list of recalled products here.
