Chemicals Increasingly Linked to Obesity
... And How You Can Fight Fat
by Janelle Sorensen
Obesity has become a national epidemic and it is increasingly creeping into the youngest of our population. In fact, an alarming new study reports that 1 in 5 American 4-year-olds is obese, up 300% since the 1980s, and many more are considered seriously overweight. This epidemic has compelled many to predict that our children will be the first generation to have a shorter lifespan than their parents. What's going on?
Popular opinion says that poor nutrition and lack of exercise is the root of this problem. But, while lifestyle choices clearly play a major role in personal health, studies are increasingly showing something far more insidious - everyday exposures to common chemicals may be increasing our waistlines.
One of the most recent studies found that overweight young girls had significantly higher levels of phthalates in their bodies compared to the general population of children. Phthalates, a type of hormone disruptor, are used in plastics (most often PVC) and in personal care products.
According to Dr. Philip J. Landrigan, a professor of pediatrics at Mount Sinai, and one of the lead researchers on the study, the results are preliminary and do not prove that phthalates cause obesity, simply that they seem to be linked. "Right now it's a correlation; we don't know if it's cause and effect or an accidental finding," Dr. Landrigan said. "The $64,000 question is, what is causal pathway? Does it go through the thyroid gland? Does it change fat metabolism?"
Even if we don't know exactly how phthalates and obesity are linked, we do know phthalates are not the only potential offender. A small, but growing body of evidence in both animals and humans are finding a variety of hormone disruptors linked to obesity, including tributyltin, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), organotins, BPA , and PFOA.
Reduce your exposure by following these simple tips:
Over 90% of all phthalates are used in PVC plastics, so avoid purchasing PVC products and packaging. (Check out PVC: The Poison Plastic for more info). Phthalates are also used in personal care products, so read labels and use CosmeticsDatabase.com to find the safest products.
HCB has been banned, but still contaminates soil and water, which results in the contamination of our food. The US Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) recommends eating low fat meat and dairy to reduce your exposure to HCB.
Tributyltin and organotin are in the same family of chemicals. The US ATSDR recommends these tips for reducing exposure to these compounds:
To avoid BPA, eat foods that are fresh, frozen, dried or in glass jars or tetra packs instead of canned (same for beverages). Also, avoid polycarbonate plastic (PC or #7).
Reduce your exposure to PFOA by replacing those easy-to-clean Teflon pans with cast iron, avoiding clothing and carpeting marketed as "stain-resistant," and avoiding greasy, pre-packaged foods (and microwavable popcorn). You should also know that most take-out packaging is coated with Teflon, so try eating in or asking about alternative packaging. Learn more at Environmental Working Group.

- Reduce the amount of canned products you eat or drink and store unused portions in separate containers.
- Reduce your consumption of seafood from waters that may be contaminated with organic tin compounds and your contact with household products that contain organotin compounds (for example, silicon-coated baking parchment paper).

My comment is on the obesity rates in children. This study really should look not only at life style etc. but also ethnicity. Are some groups more prone to obesity? As someone said "Lies, damn lies and statistics." Usually attributed to Mar Twain. A good epidemological study looks at many variables and lists them.
All the chemical the big corporations make us swallow. Even the bottled water is packaged in plastic.
I believe in all of this 100%..I recently went 100% organic/green, havnt changed my workouts, i eat more "real food" (no more diet food, all fresh)...and i have lost 7lbs in 3 weeks so far...i also have suffered from IBS and menstrual problems for 10+ years, so far my tummy has felt great!! our bodies start to get confused with all the chemicals we eat and absorb through our skin--i could go on and on about all the benefits of organic/green living, but i plan to eat organic and be "green" for the rest of my life, and plan to teach my future children the things i have learned.....
don't blame the big companies. if you buy it, your to blame. the basics of capitalism. you buy it and make it a demand. you start buying something in glass instead, and then everyone starts doing it, the "big companies" will do it too. they just want to make money and give us all work...
Food plays a major part, but also things you put on your skin, like make up,tanning lotions and creams are mostly made up of chemicals which are then absorbed into your skin and into your bloodstream, causing your hormones to go react differently.
i bet that those chemicals don't cause obesity. couldn't it just be a coincidence, maybe they're just drinking more soda/other sugary high calorie drinks that just happen to be packaged in plastic; then that's the reason they're obese and the chemicals probably don't have anything to do with it. if these girls were consuming the appropriate amount of calories/day, exercising regularly and were still obese then the correlation between the chemicals and obesity could be made, but from the article it doesn't seem like that is the case.
All you need to know about this article is in the disclaimer:
"The opinions expressed in the WebMD Blogs are of the author and the author alone. They do not reflect the opinions of WebMD and they have not been reviewed by a WebMD physician or any member of the WebMD editorial staff for accuracy, balance or objectivity."
Bingo. This is politics, not science. You can forget accuracy, balance, and objectivity.
And it's easy to tell, too. Click on the link "1 in 5 American 4-year-olds is obese" and what do you get? A CBS News story citing an "expert" whose peer reviewed scientific research is published ... where? No matter. The researcher is a political activist. He says about childhood obesity, "If this were any other disorder than obesity there would be a national call to arms." Those are the words of a man with a mission to change the world, not a man interested in science.
Go to the next link that says "overweight young girls had significantly higher levels of phthalates in their bodies compared to the general population of children." Click on it and where do you go? To a New York Times article that has a link to Philip Landrigan's university website. Where is the scientific study? It's not there, and there is no link to it, either. (Landrigan is cited here as the scientific authority, but he carefully includes a disclaimer telling you "we don't know if it's cause and effect or an accidental finding." There is a big difference between a cause and ... nothing.)
Later Sorensen links to something called "PVC: The Poison Plastic." Is that science? Click on it to find out. Nope. It's a link to a political advocacy group called the Center for Health, Environment and Justice. These people aren't scientists; they're crusaders.
Go to the next link, called Cosmeticsdatabase.com. Is this science? Nope. It's more political advocacy, this time something called the Environmental Working Group. No science there, either. Just a front operation for a bunch of trial lawyers trying to find their next big killing.
Finally, Sorensen unloads her biggest gun, citing a federal agency in support of her various canards about chemicals. What exactly does this federal agency say? It's a fact sheet about tin, which isn't a chemical, it's an element in the Periodic Table! Does it say exposure to tin causes obesity? No, it does not.
By now the pattern should be obvious. Janelle Sorensen is a political hack. But you'd find that out by clicking on her name. She's "the senior writer and health consultant for Healthy Child Healthy World." What is that? Surprise! It's a political activist group.
I don't blame Sorensen for being a political hack. It's a job better more responsible than robbing banks. Well, usually. When political hacks scare people into spending their money foolishly, they're robbing your children instead.
But I do blame WebMD for giving political hacks like her a platform on a web site that is supposed to be dedicated to medicine. WebMD should be ashamed.
Yeh, right. Shame on WebMD for trying to prevent more kids from becoming fat.
Sweetie, I think your tinfoil hat is on too tight.
After reading a rude comment directly aimed to insult the compassionate people that offer this website.(At 2am. comment and calling themselves crispy.) I will not respond again personally to after thoughts after this posting. This will show this is not to provoke.
KNOW THIS! This web site is to inform, educate for the majority of the public who easily understand any and all information is for a comprehensive reference to be cross-referanced with other sources. Even a well trained doctor will tell you they consult more than one or several resources for their continue education and skill updating to get it as right as possiable. I am not a doctor - not at all. I am a well informed and well read for the past 30 years about health information from countless sounce to gather WISDOM and build upon what is fundamental. Keep reading and judging carefully what fits YOUR jigsaw puzzle of health best!
phthalates do not change fat metabolism they are stored in fat , which is why eating low
fat dairy and meats are advised . More fat cells = more phthalates.
Canned food should be avoided because they often contain too much sodium.
And water should come out of the tap because, EPA regulations on tap water are more strict than FDA sandstone bolted water - tap is best! Get a stainless steel bottle for portability.
When to come to obesity pint you finger at processed foods, too much salt, high fructose sugars, and sedentary lifestyles.
Diets and diet aids do not help anyone. The only way to successfully lose weight and get the body that you want is by using the right information. This information can be found in the book Lose Weight Using Four Easy Steps which can be ordered through the website www.bbotw.com Everyone who has gotten a copy of this book is now healthier.
The original study about babies & Phthalates never tested the baby washes & lotions for Phthalates levels. There was also studies later that showed there were some Phthalates in the babies food, clothing, breast milk etc. It created an unbelievable scare that may or may not be warrented. Our 'tin-helmeted' friend however is right about some of the organizations mentioned. These are often not science based organizations. One that he mentioned in particular actually has a whole website full of out & out lies about ingredients. I have a small retail store with my own line of bath & body. I've spent more hours than I care to recount trying to figure out some of their claims, as some of my customers believe them. I work with a couple of the larger labs in the country & the information from their scientists is in direct conflict with some of these groups. Finally it has recently come out in scientific studies that any lotion product that claims to be preservative free either has preservatives hidden in other ingredients or it has bacteria. THe most common example would be grapeseed extract - it is preserved with parabens, but those that use it don't have to list the parabens & they can claim all natural. Most of the claims about products being outlawed in Europe are patently false. I personally try to avoid Phthalates, but it is not in all plastics & these days its not even in many fragrances. It is in some of the baby formulas that are produced in certain Asian Countries. The best thing that you can do for your health & that of your family is to eat a heart healthy diet, avoid processed foods & soda. The biggest thing I look for when reading labels is what country a product is from, we've had more than one case of tainted chinese foods, so why is it that over 60% of all veggies sold frozen in this country are from China? Seems like a bigger threat.
This 'advice' from the US ATSDR has to rate among the stupidest advice I've ever heard.
"Reduce consumption of seafood from waters contaninated with organic tin compounds": oh, okay then. I'll be sure to ask Tom on the counter at Meijers to specify which particular seafood we're referring to here. He's bound to know.
"don't eat food from cans": Well, okay... cans, right. Canning companies are allowed to use dangerous chemicals in making cans to store food, but it's up to me to avoid them. Maybe we should ban them? Hell, no. Wouldn't want to infringe on the right of companies to make money by killing you, would we?
"Ask for alternative packing at MacDonalds": Sorry, can I have some teflon-free paper in my bag? I know your food is cooked in the most dangerous fat known to man, and there's a reasonable chance that the chemicals on the paper you wrap it in will poison my system, so I'll just take it without wrapping, thanks.
Honest to god, if these chemicals are so dangerous, DON'T ALLOW FOOD COMPANIES TO USE THEM. F*ckwits.
Don't you all find in highly funny that Margarine is only 1 Molecule short of plastic?? I whole heartedly believe that chemicals do disrupt our body.
Jaide makes a great point. We absorb phthalates into our bloodstream daily through our personal care products. Most shampoos on the market have phthalates, so do our lotions, washes, etc. I recommend finding natural lines - some to check out are www.ninenaturals.com and www.lavanila.com
Oh, great suggestions! I love Nine Naturals. It's free from all of the chemicals we should be avoiding. Not just for obesity, but because they are linked to cancer.
My motto,if man has tampered or the ingredients read like a science experiment, I don;t eat it. Label reader from since there weren.t very many labels.
Some of this is old stuff. I quit using Tuperware years ago. I had put my angel fish with their own water in a big Tuperware bowl while I cleaned the tank. In an hour they were all dead. I was told that the bowl leached the chemicals in the water that killed the fish. I figured if it would kill the fish what would it do to me and my family?
The Environmental Working Group is not a front for trial lawyers. This is a group of scientists and environmentalists and statisticians who conduct and review studies about chemicals in our systems. Only someone who is willfully ignorant would claim that studies raising doubts about the safety of common consumer products are politically based. A true scientist will raise a question and few will say their study is totally conclusive, just statistically significant. But that is not the same as saying that it is meaningless.
Once again, willful ignorance.
Its a very simple formular.....intake 2 calories...burn 1 calorie....You gain weight...intake 1 calorie...burn 2 calories....You lose weight.......ANY QUESTIONS???
Regulatory Checkbook has hit the nail right on the head! EVERYONE should question what they read, hear or see on television or the internet. Just because its there doesn't mean its true. The lemmings and sheep among us are soooo easily swayed by reading this type of scare mongering and that is precisely what the author was hoping for. Keep your eyes open, question statistics and everything you read from so-called experts. You will be wiser and better off for it. And thank you Regulatory Checkbook!
Many people have pointed out that we would be better off drinking tap water than bottled water (due to the plastic), but aren't a lot of peoples pipes that bring in that tap water PVC now? What effect does that have on the tap water? No one has mentioned this so far.
Although having these things in our bodies is a testimony to our non-green lifestyle, the obesity epidemic is caused by our consumption of calories above our needs and our lack of calorie expenditure from our sedentary lifestyles. When a population is conditioned to eat-NOT THROUGH EDUCATION of WHAT WE NEED TO STAY HEALTHY, but from the food industry's push to make every conceivable item they can out of wheat flour and push huge portions of beef, milk and cheese (loaded with hormones that stimulate cancer, by the way) and there is a Krispy Creme, McD, Burger King, Pizza Hut, etc on every corner (especially if its near a school!!)PLEEEEESE people. Eat more fruits and vegetables and get off your computers!
And so, just because her politics aren't your politics she becomes a political hack? Her views are as valid as yours. Apparently you are one of those Americans who believe in the land of the free just as long as that follows your party line. You and others like you are more concerning to me than someone who has the courage to investigate potential issues like this.
all of this is really pretty simple. Eat whatever you want but be sure that you get the amount of exercise needed to burn what you eat. Physical work and exercise are good for you! Sitting on the couch on the recliner for hours on end with a hand in the chip bag is bad! No science needed just common sense. Don't cos a darn dime either. Much to the dismay of all the folks getting rich while we get fatter!
Lots of important stuff here.
My contribution follows:
POPs are "Persisten Organic Pollutants". The travel on the winds for thousands of miles from where they are created. POPs include things like DDT, Dioxin, Agent Orange, and over 100 other nasty chemicals you don't want in your body. POPs are fat soluable.
Every woman in the world has POPs in the milk she feeds her baby. The same is true of seals, whales, caribou or any other nursing animal. Search for:
By the way, all advice is to breast feed because doing so conveys protection to the child. Besides that, everything is contaminated anyhow.
Organically grown food has POPs in them. So, don't think buying Organically grown food is going to protect you from POPs. I do buy organically grown food, but for other reasons.
There is POPs in the fat of every animal in the world. When you eat fat from an animal, it increases your POPs. There is no known way to cleanse your body of POPs (if you know of a reference stating that they can do it, post something).
POPs is the acronym for "Persistent Organic Pollutants".
Recent research published in Jamet states:
Obese people with low levels of POPs in there blood don't get diabetes whereas skinny people with POPs in their blood do get diabetes. Google search "Obesity's helper in triggering diabetes" and NewScientist.
Personally, I feel that WebMD is not addressing this issue. I did a search for information on "Persistent Organic Pollutants" and POPs and didn't find much at all.
I read all 26 comments in this posting.
I agree with a lot that is said and disagree with some of what is said.
That being said, go to Wikipedia.com and research "Persistent Organic Pollutants".
IMHO, POPs is a global problem that is on the order of Global Warming.
By the way, to those of you out there that believe Global Warming is a hoax, tell it to the Polar Bears.
To Anonymous on May 8th,
was it really the chemicals that were making you fat? Because if you switched from processed foods to organic food and started eating "real food" chances are you reduced your calorie intake dramatically and started taking in more vitamins. I think 4 year olds are getting fat because their parents are feeding them too much junk.
Let's not confuse correlation with causality. Chances are these plastics aren't just found in water bottles but in traces with all processed foods, which are usually unhealthy and high in calories.
Stop blaming others for you bad choices, or unfortunate lack of lucky genes.
Interesting article but plastics don't seem like they could be responsible anymore than a household lightbulb could give you sunburn; they don't deliver enough estrogen, but eating soya does. A couple of slices of bread contain a couple of grams of soya oil. Each gram of soya oil yields 2 mg of a weak estrogen pro-hormone that converts to Estradiol-B, a super powerful female hormone via a one pass enzymatic conversion in the liver (same process as the Andro pro hormones banned by congress converting to testosterone).
You'd have to scrape off and eat large pieces of the plastic coating with each meal to get the equivelent effect of the soya.
I'm kind of sick of people reducing weight loss to calories in/calories out. Speaking from my own personal experience, I exercised 5 days/week -- running 30+ min/day, weight lifting, etc. -- and reduced my calorie intake well below what I burned on a daily basis. Nothing. I was definitely stronger. But, no weight loss whatsoever.
One day, I decided I was in it (my lifestyle) for my health, not weight loss. I stopped eating the diet bars. Stopped drinking the diet shakes... I actually reduced my amount of exercise to something more enjoyable and started eating a delicious, large salad (filled with fresh produce) every day. Voila! The weight came off easily. And it wasn't because I was consuming less calories.
Natural (in my opinion and in the opinions of many others) is just better. Our bodies know what to do with it. And we still really don't know the far-reaching effects of all the chemicals and additives most of us consume on a daily basis.
Everyone should eat and drink exactly what they want. But, if you DON'T feel healthy or you're struggling to lose weight even when you're doing the "right" thing, you might want to look at what you're eating and skip some (or all) of the processed foods. I still eat a few. But, who knows? That might change in the future.
Better than swallowing pills – The solution is in the thin strip
Believe it or not, over 40% of the population cannot swallow a pill!
DYNA-TABS® - vitamin and herbal dietary supplements in fast-dissolving, great tasting, fun to take convenient strips are the ideal products for the 40% of the population who cannot swallow pills .
The line features varieties of innovative products including GINSENG WITH VITAMINS B6 & B12 ENERGY SUPPORT™, GREEN TEA ANTIOXIDANT SUPPORT™, HOODIA GORDONII CRAVINGS RESIST™, VITAMIN C IMMUNE HEALTH SUPPORT™, BROMELAIN AND PAPAIN DIGESTIVE ASSIST™ (an Antacid Alternative), WHITE KIDNEY BEAN CARB RESIST™, GINKGO BILOBA MEMORY SUPPORT™, ALOE VERA DIGESTIVE SUPPORT™ (Detox and mild Laxative) that are formulated in a variety of tropical and traditional great tasting flavors that dissolve quickly on the tongue so you do not need any water.
Its natural approach achieves its goal without any drug or chemical side-effects.
Taking just one flavored strip provides all the energy and medicinal nutriment you need without any of the carbs, calories, or sugar.
To those who cannot swallow pills, which is a significant 40% of the population, and in fact, even those who can swallow pills prefer the strip format since it is faster to get into your system and convenient to take. Mintel, Datamonitor, and Nielsen reports that the strips format will soon replace the obsolete pill or bitter tasting liquid format thus giving you ground floor profitable opportunity.
Supplements are meant to be taken for preventive measures to support long-term good health rather than to treat diseases.
In the FDA testing, the average absorption level from a 500mg weight pill yielded only 0.002mg absorption and that is negligible. The conclusion is that the pill has a smaller dosage yield due to less absorption. They also stated these figures are average since each person has a different absorption metabolism level so for others it may be even less.
The absorption level of the Dyna – Tab strip is 100%. The strips dissolve on your tongue resulting in greater content absorption into the body that is easier and faster than pills, chewables, or liquids.
Normally, it takes 6-8 hours to digest pills, chewables, or liquids.
Furthermore, there is digestive process interference that causes changes in the ingredients, most of whose contents are excremented from the body in the usual 6-8 hour residual outtake manner - yielding very little product benefits. Pills, chewables, or liquids would need to be taken earlier on but then when would you know when to start taking it?
The rise of strips being used in cough and cold, digestive, heart attach victims receiving nitroglycerine and now the inclusion and antibiotics in strip format thereby antiquated the pill format. The pill format requires 6-8 hours to digest yielding less than 0.02mg whereas the strips dissolve promptly through the tongue directly into the blood stream with full efficacy.
DYNA-TABS® strips contain smaller but fuller accurate content, good stability, less digestive processing interference, resulting in a faster, but fuller absorption effect that is sustained and controlled comparably to release drugs.
Conclusively, DYNA-TABS® strips having faster absorption results, are easy to take, convenient since they occupy minimal space in pockets or bags (instead of bulky and rattling bottles), packaged more sterile, and tamper proof yet easy to open which is important for the elderly or the dyslexic and satisfy a large target market niche.

iam a female doctor doing postgraduate study, intrested in nutritional science, and of course having my self experience in trying to be in shape always, declare to whome is really intrested to know, being in good shape needs balance in life; eat healthy food, sleep deeply enough(till u get up by urself without any stimuli),drink water and herbal teas,be happy motivated and have piece among those arround u, of course do some activities (like walking, shopping in large space, cleaning, arranging ur house) and have confidence the most important thing to love urself and have good deeds in life attributed to all people whome u know and u dont know.work on ur morals and beleives. forgive urself for ur mistakes and promise to be someone better. good luck and best wishes
Regulatory Checkbook has an interesting perspective. Anytime people who have a valid concern get together to educate the public and/or work toward fixing the problem, they automatically become a "political group" and should be dismissed. It doesn't matter to him who the people are. They could all be scientists, as soon as they form a group they are scientists no longer, they're political!
By all means, let's not hold companies accountable for using untested, poorly tested or known dangerous chemicals in their products. Certainly, when they tell us these chemicals are safe, we can believe them, right? Why would they lie?
We should dismiss those 'political groups' instead, right? Look at all they have to gain by scaring us. There's ... well there's ..., well just dismiss them anyway. It's the guys making huge profits by using these chemicals that we should trust!
man pushing 70 and have found all these comments interesting.
I believe children are heavier nowadays because they never play outside and get driven everywhere. Once home they play inside on computers and games just sitting. Years ago kids walked several miles to school four times a day. Even my kids had to walk home for lunch about two miles.
About six years ago I moved to a place where I go to a lot of buffet and potluck lunches and suppers and also sit at my computer a lot. I have gained 40 lbs. and in the last year a larger stomach. The thin seniors that live near me are always out walking every day and many don't eat baked goods.
As to water, I wonder when they will tell us that the awful taste of metal bottles is bad for us. I don't like my water from the tap and as it comes out of the lake and often tastes like Chlorine. Can drinking bleach be good for us? Look what it will do if you spill some on clothes.
So kids get out and play on outdoor playgrounds and drink less soda pop and moms too.
I agree with some of what was posted. However saying that ALL weight gain is because of calorie intake is foolish. I am not a doctor. I am a woman who was in a hospital and met another woman who was FAT. She needed an operation, but needed to lose weight first, so the doctor limited her food in the hospital to 3 apples a day. She didn't cheat and Gained weight. (Yes, I KNOW she didn't cheat.) She was discharged without the operation and the staff accused her of cheating. Things are NOT always so neatly cut and dried.
BTW there may be global warming but the miniscule amount People are doing will not affect it much. The SUN has much more effect than we do. Don't get me wrong, I love clean air, clean water and clean land. I just don't go nuts about it.
We should not look down on fat people as many do have health problems and some pills they have to take may make them heavy.
My family were all big people and they all lived into their 80's so it didn't harm them being big.
..."all things are good in moderation"...too much or too little is excessive in both directions...think balance!!!!..
