HCG Levels and Ultrasounds in Early Pregnancy
Several times a week in my practice, and in my Internet roles at the WebMD Fertility Center and the Pregnancy Board at WebMD, I have the opportunity to deal with early pregnancies and patients who want or need to know if a pregnancy is progressing normally (or not). In my short twenty years in practice, technological advances have come about that allow careful monitoring of pregnancies in the first half of the first trimester. These modalities have the potential to determine the viability of a gestation before any negative sign or symptom develops, and, if used properly they can prevent dangerous complications or reassure patients during uncertain times. But along with the technology and the good comes misuse and inappropriate interpretation that can do a lot of damage and cause a lot of worry in many instances.
There are several reasons to monitor pregnancies during the first few weeks after conception. These include:
* bleeding in early pregnancy
* possible ectopic pregnancy
* recurrent miscarriage
* patient anxiety due to previous pregancy loss
It's important to note that there is no intervention available today to a woman who is already pregnant that will influence the rate of early pregnancy loss. Monitoring pregnancies may reduce anxiety, prevent rupture of ectopic pregnancy, and avoid the unease in waiting for a miscarriage to declare itself, but it cannot provide information that will affect the pregnancy's prognosis.
The human pregnancy hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is first found in a pregnant woman's blood as early as 7 to 8 days after conception. As a pregnancy grows, HCG increases. Measurements of HCG levels can be useful during the early weeks before the fetal heartbeat is seen on ultrasound, usually around 6-7 weeks after last menstrual period, or 4-5 weeks after conception.
A single HCG value doesn't give enough information about the health or viability of the pregnancy. Within the first 2-4 weeks after fertilization, HCG usually doubles every 48-72 hours. That usually corresponds to HCG levels below 1200 IU. From 1200-6000, the HCG usually takes 72-96 hours to double. Above 6000 IU, the hCG often takes over four days to double. So, the rate of increase in HCG levels normally varies as a pregnancy progresses. Normal HCG values vary up to 20 times between different pregnancies, however, and an HCG that does not double every two to three days does not necessarily indicate a problem with the pregnancy. Some normal pregnancies will have quite low levels of HCG, and result in perfect babies.
Pregnancies that will miscarry and ectopic (tubal) pregnancies are likely to show lower levels and slower rises, but often have normal levels initially. Sometimes it takes three or more HCG levels at least 48 hours apart to get an idea how a pregnancy is progressing.
Once the HCG levels are above 1000-1500 IU, vaginal sonography usually identifies the presence of an intrauterine pregnancy. At that point an ectopic pregnancy is effectively ruled out. Once the pregnancy is visible on ultrasound, further HCG testing is less reliable than ultrasound for monitoring a pregnancy, as the variations in HCG levels are frequently misleading and cause unnecessary worry. Since normal levels of HCG can vary tremendously, after 5-6 weeks of pregnancy, sonogram findings are much more predictive of pregnancy outcome than are HCG levels. Once the gestational sac is seen, most doctors will monitor with ultrasounds rather than drawing HCG. Subsequent monitoring with ultrasound should reveal normal growth of the gestational sac, and the development of a fetal heartbeat by 6 to 7 weeks' gestation (6-7 weeks after LMP). Once fetal activity has been detected by ultrasound, the chance of miscarriage is usually less than 10%.
My general recommendations regarding the appropriate use of HCG testing are summarized below. By following these guidelines, unnecessary testing that might lead to needless worry might be avoided, and just the right information will be obtained.
1. If you're pain-free and you're not bleeding and you're at low-risk for an ectopic pregnancy, try to avoid the temptation to monitor HCG levels. Generally no bleeding (no news) is good news. The pregnancy is on autopilot, and there's little you can do to influence it at this stage. Try to relax and wait and see.
2. IF HCG monitoring is indicated, try not to read too much into the absolute numbers and rates of increase of the HCG levels. Trust your doctor's knowledge and experience to tell you if and when to repeat the tests, when and how to react to the numbers, and when to have an ultrasound. I can't tell you how many patients I've had who convinced themselves that their pregnancy was doomed based on inappropriate interpretation of HCG levels, only to discover that everything is fine when an appropriately timed ultrasound is performed.
3. Once an intrauterine pregnancy is visible on ultrasound, do not put any faith in HCG measurements. Frequently pregnancies and their HCG levels don't fit the mold, and the numbers don't increase the way they "ought" to. Rely on time, and predictable ultrasound changes to determine pregnancy viability.
4. Remember that positive thinking and trust in the process are important in shaping your experience and add good karma to our world!

dr. warnock...
i found your blog through searching about hcg doubling times...and it has offered a bit of relief...
history is:
20 yr. history of crohn's with an illeostomy. crohn's free for last 3-5 years...told by all obgyn's ok to conceive...
june 2004--attempted pregnancy. pregnant for a few weeks, hcg never got over 54 -miscarried shorty after with follow up dnc per docs.
may 2005-september 2005--attempted pregnancy
october 2005--successful! lmp october 23rd, 2005. cycles are typically 26-28 days.
november 2005--hcg levels:
11-22-05 1418 (bhcg)
11-25-05 4379 (bhcg)
11-29-05 9000 (bhcg) 20.1 (progesteropne)
12-01-05 10,726 (bhcg)
12-06-05 23,188 (bhcg)
so they appear to be doubling every 4 days...above 6000....
on friday december 2, 2005 an ultrasound was done showing "an irregular sac" that had no measurable qualities to speak of...of course my husband and i were devestated...and prepared for the worst.
tuesday december 6, 2005 ultrasound showed a perfectly round sac (with no yolk) and measuring 6 weeks 2 days. (which is accurate) again given gloomy advice that this is probably not viable..did first u/s miss the whole sac?? curious.
can you see our confusion?? dr. is saying wait until next ultrasound..i still have all my symptoms. they are not screaming loud but are present--obviously gaining weight, and sore breasts, slightly naseaus.
i guess my only other input--my uterus is oddly shaped...(according to my g.i.) i want to say biffurated? and he thought potentially since i have a colon missing and my uterus is also tilted...they might have missed the sac and advised me not to do anything until the next ultrasound...
sorry if this is too long winded...i know without seeing me you can not legally give a diagnosis..but i thought maybe a bit of direction--your numbers sounded like i might still be in the game...
thank you!
Thanks this was very helpful. I am due August 1, 2006 and so far I have been sailing along. I haven't had many symptoms and I haven't been nauseous so I began to worry and wonder if I should have my hCG levels tested.
After reading your blog, I will take your advice and be happy that I feel so good and let nature take its course.
Thanks - this article has at least offered me some hope. This is my first pregnancy (I am 23). First u/s showed no heartbeat, but dr said may be a little early and ordered hcg tests. They went up but no where near doubled. He said we would check for a heartbeat again this week, and if there was none, I would probably miscarry. He advised me to call him if I started bleeding over the weekend. (Also had two small spots of pinkish blood night before this first appointment) From everything I read about Hcg levels, I had already doomed my pregnancy and went through all the crying that would have happened if I had actually miscarried. I will hang onto some hope until my appointment in a few days.
Thank you for that. I have had a handful of ultrasounds following a disappointing HCG rise over 5 days (we went from 13,300 to around 35,000. The ultrasounds looked more encouraging, and at 9 weeks (Still holding our breath) we've gotten a more encouraging prognosis from our RE. Still that number at the onset scares me. RE suggested it might have been a multiple that died off or some such. In any event...thank you for your post.
I just found out my HCG Level has not increased as much as it should and got very worried, and decided to read about this. The Web search got me through this artical, and it has really put my mind at ease. It is well written and tells you exactly what you need to know - Thank you very much.
I am 9wks and my hcg levels are barely rising even though they are in the low average range. My Dr said she was not happy with these results even though my ultrasound shows a normal size fetus, gestation sac visible, strong heart rate and that it is an intrauterine pregnancy. Reading your article has eased my concerns and anxiety. Thanks HEAPS for your article.
This article was extremely reassuring for me. I had a miscarriage 5 months ago at 9 weeks due to blighted ovum (I was bleeding, checked hCG, they were at 24000, 30000, 27500 over 5 days). Ultrasound confirmed b/o and I naturally m/c'ed that day. Now I am pregnant again and had some light spotting (5.5 weeks along). hCG check on Monday was 1597, Wednesday was 2058. I am going in for an u/s tomorrow, but hoping and praying everything is ok
I just wanted to say - thanks. This is my first pregnancy, and I've been spotting on and off. My doctors did an emergency ultrasound, and then another 4 days later - and both times we saw baby with strong heartbeat. I'm only 9 weeks along, so they wanted to test my hCG levels. They tested on a Tuesday, and then on a Thursday - the number came back the same. I've stopped spotting - I'm sicker than sick, and super tired - but they are testing my blood again - then will do another ultrasound. This article just relieved my fears, simply because I have seen my baby with a strong heartbeat - exactly the size that it's supposed to be at this time. I just don't need to worry. This article was well written and very informative, plus it gave me some hope - and that's what I need right now.
hello ... i had a miscarriage at six weeks one day this past august and was devastated. i am now pregnant again (seven weeks two days) and we are very excited but also worry and are on guard because of what happened the last time. my hcg levels were doubling at around every four days rather than every three, so my dr. had me have an ultrasound, and at six weeks four days there was a heartbeat, etc. that same day i had blood drawn and my levels were rising, but still not every three days ... around every four, so i go in a few days for another ultrasound to make sure all is well. after reading this article, i feel much more positive and feel that everything is OK, and I will rely more on the ultrasounds rather than the "absolute" numbers of hcg levels. when i go for this next ultrasound i wil be seven weeks and five days. i am anxious to know all is going well!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! It is so nice to know that there is still hope! You are a great doctor and your patients are lucky to have you!
Thank you so much for this article! It was so helpful! My HCG's haven't been doubling, however, no cramps no bleeding... no news is good news! Thank you very much!
I am 5 weeks 6 days and have normal pregnancy signs. My HCG level went from 5149 to 7200 in exactly 48 hours(just found this out today). In several articles I've read, it says that if you are at the HCG level I am at, it can take 72 hours + to double. If this is the case, why does my doctor have me go in every 48 hours instead of 72? I will ask her that on Monday, but thought I'd see if anyone new.
This article gave me some peace. This is my first pregnancy. My lmp was 12/17/2006. On 1/8/2007 I got a positive pee stick, so got a blood test.
I had 8.5 progesterone, (too low) and a 9000 HcG. The doctor put me on Prometrium. In 48 hours, my tests revealed 13.0 progesterone (better) but only a 13000 HcG, it did not double.
The nurse at my dr. office indicated that this probably meant that this pregnancy was not progressing and was somehow abnormal, as she was expecting to see at least an 18000 Hcg. So, I have been crying a lot and basically preparing myself for the worst. But according to this article, I may not be on the verge of miscarriage after all? I have an ultrasound tomorrow, so I will try to hold out hope til then. Thanks.
I have had two ectopic pregnancies and I am now pregnant. My LMP was 12/9/06. Because of the ectopics they have been kind of cautious. I had a beta hcg done on Wednesday (800) then today Friday had another one done and it doubled exactly to 1600. the doctor said that is good that it doubled I am still leary because there was nothing found on the sonogram on Wednesday or today. He says that my numbers suggest that we will not see anything yet anyways. I am still worried. What do you think?
My warmest thanks to you Dr. for providing professional, clear, concise and therefore comforting information on this issue. I am shocked that so many doctors tell so many of us that the doubling every 24, 48 or 72 hours rules is hard and fast, that they omit to mention the variation over 6000 - and that many women haven't been told that after 8 or 9 weeks there is little fluctuation at all. I will absolutely add some good karma to the world as of now, and enjoy the process which I have been unable to fully do until reading your article.
I have been a nervous reck all day after being told that my hcg level has not doubled - i have had 2 m/c in the past 2 years -so to have heard that was scarry - i cried and cried and was hoping to find some answers online - and trust me i loved what u have written Dr - it does give hope to us hopeless.
My husband & I have been trying to get pregnant for 2 years now. We began artificial inseminations 6 months ago. After going through 4 AI's, we decided that the 5th try would be our last...and we finally had success! We were thrilled! I've now had 3 HCG tests through my Dr., to track the progress. I'm at 5 1/2 weeks, and just learned that my HCG levels are very low. I've had some cramping but no bleeding. I was absolutely devasted to hear the news. I immediately got online to research these HCG levels & their meaning, & feel so much more at ease, thanks to this article. I have another HCG test in a couple of days, and certainly have a little more hope than prior to this article. Thank you!
My husband & I have been trying to conceive for 2 years now. We went through 5 IUI procedures & have finally succeeded in conception. My first HCG tests were good, but my third test at about 4 weeks was low...476. The nurse called and told me this on Friday & I was scheduled to come back on Monday for another HCG test. I was on pins and needles all weekend, worrying about what was going on. I went in this mornign for the test & I just received a call from the nurse with my HCG results, and my levels are up to 1296! Yeah! I've read a lot about this over the weekend & have come to the conclusion that you can't read too much into the numbers. I do know it's hard...but try to relax!
I actually have a question and need some advise. I have been trying for about a year now to get pregnant (the past 4 months on clomed). This month I had numberous symptoms that I could be pregnant even down to the point of being a day late for my period and it not lasting as long as normal. My Dr. did a blood test that has come back with an HCG level of less than one. My Dr. is out of town and the lab results were given to me by one of the nurses and she is going to check with the Dr on call to see where to go from here. She is saying that I am not pregnant due to the hcg level but with the symptoms I am having I am afraid to start the clomed again tomorrow for round 5. What if the HCG level is just not that strong and I am really pregnant? Will the clomed risk the pregnancy? Should I skip this month and see my Dr. when he gets back on Thursday? I am so confused for I have been wanting this for so long. Please advise.
I would like to thank you for this article. I was so unsure of what to think. this is my story. I am pregnant(at the time of my HCG test i was 8-9 weeks) and almost a year ago exactly i miscarried, so this time i was so concerned about how things were going to work out, i have had cramping as well as some back pain as i did with my last pregnancy. i went to the doctor, he suggested that i have my HCG tested. i did so on a wednesday, then again on Friday,. Wednesdays results were 73,000, Fridays were 78,000, my doctor called and stated if i was still having cramping and some spotting( only twice) that i was probably miscarrying but we should test again on Monday. So I went in and had the test on Monday. My HCG had come back and fallen to 75,000. My doctor called and told me that i was miscarrying, i then told him that i would like to know what to do now, i was given several options, of which i chose to see an OB doctor and examine my options. i was then told that the Fetus i was carrying had already passed away. devastated of course. My doctor then referred me to a doctor that specializes in this. in going i was prepared for the worst, i was told i would have an ultrasound and then see the doctor, now remember i was told that my pregnancy was no longer viable so there would not be any sign of life. However, during my ultrasound i looked at the screen anad saw my baby's heartbeat. yes this little one was still with us. i saw the doctor afterward who told me everything looked great, the baby's heartrate was strong and the baby measured exactly what it should have. Case in point dont put too much stock into HCG testing, if there is doubt, before you worry have an ultrasound.
Thank You so much for your article.
Here's a fun one doc.
My HCG was at 80
dropped to a 63
I should have miscarried by now (this was a week ago & I was told I was miscarrying by an ER MD)
Now, upon having it checked today, it somehow went up to 81.
What the hell?
Amber- I had a m/c in September and October of '06. It took me 5 weeks to do it naturally. My HCG never made it above 170 and I went every few days for at least 3-4 weeks until it went to zero. My numbers went up and down a few times. My RE just kept sending me back for more to see if there was an error in one of the tests. Maybe you should do that?
I would like to echo my gratitude for this well-written article. It has brought me some peace.
I'm so glad you took the time to write this information down. I'm currently going through regular testing of my HCG levels due to early bleeding (around implantation time). The first test was 800+, second 500+, told I'm going to mis-carry or possibly tubal/ectopic. Continuing to test my HCG levels, back up to 720+, next test up 25 more to around 750+. Had some light bleeding yesterday and am trying to take it easy. They have mostly ruled out ectopic/tubal. I'm VERY early, approx. 4 weeks. I just had my missed cycle about 2 days ago. I am trusting my Dr.'s knowledge, but it's so nice to have more info. out there on exactly what the HCG levels detect and how they operate.
Thanks!
went to the e.r. b/c i waw lightly spotting at 6 1/2 weeks. The doctors did an interuterine ultrasound and found 2 sacs. But he said nothing was in them. My blood levels were correspondent with 6 weeks pregnancy. He told me to see my obgyn and have another ultrasound in 1 week. How can I rest. First knowing I could have twins, then the thought that they may not be progressing. Nothing in the sacs, how could that be. I am very worried. I keep telling myself that it's just too early to see the embryos. Can anyone help!
Thanks for the common-sense and reassuring discussion of this issue. I am almost 5 weeks pregnant with no spotting and my HCG went from 578 two days ago to only 741 today. Your article has made me feel a little less worried. My doctor wants to recheck it in 48 hours - I'll keep my fingers crossed.
my heart goes out to all you strong women !! i myself having 3 healthy girls and little complications am now at my 4th pregnancy . was bleeding and it started heavy like period and then to spotting (how i found out i was pregnant),since i was bleeding almost the entire time with my second daughter i didn't give much thought and then i thought what if...... well i went to the e/r (mistake) and got devastating news .... ilost my baby ! my hcg count was 150 and the u/s showed no sign of baby, that is something u never get use to. i decided to get a second opinion from my o/b well he reassured me there is no way they could see my baby so early and i took a second hcg and it rose 23 in 1 day so maybe there is a chance i hope.i go for another test in 2 days and i pray we make it through., i say my heart goes out to you because like myself you love your babies more than anything , and this reality gives me more of a loathing to women that terminate pregnancy just cuz....ya know ...appreciate the gift!!! ladies hang in there if it's meant to be , oh it will be
I just wanted to thank you for this article, after 2 mcs and endless "HCG" searches I am convinced that I need to relax and not rely and dwell on my labs! Thank you so much for this article, it has really helped me relax!
Dr. Warnock,
Thank you for a very informative article--the only one I could find on hcg levels and what they mean. My first instinct is to panic about ectopic pregnancy since my first test was on the low side. I called my ob since I was having no symptoms of pregnancy other than a positive test. They did the first test this morning with a follow-up in two days but I will take your good advice and not get obsessed with numbers, trust in the process and remain positive!
With much appreciation,
ecd
I'm 7 weeks pregnant and started spotting about a week ago. I went to the dr and she said my cervix was still closed (great sign)and everything looked great. Thru the weekend just lightly spotted which she told me not to worry about. On Monday the nurse called and said my HCG levels didn't go up as much as the dr. wanted them to so I needed to come in for more blood work on Tuesday. That night I started bleeding like I was having a period. On Tuesday I went for blood work and when I got to work it looked like I was having a full period. I called and the nurse told me to go home and rest b/c it didn't sound good. I was devastated. This is my first pregnancy and I want it so bad! I cried all day and my husband called the doctor and told them they really needed to see me. He took me to the doctor and little did I know they had already told him on the phone I was misscarrying. The did an exam and my cervix is still closed and thick (great news and shocked the dr) but my blood results came back and my HCG level had dropped. Do you think it could be from bleeding? My doctor told me I haven't misscarried. I'm keeping my spirits up and whatever is God's will is God's will.
Thanks so much for your imput. I had a hard time as I had slow numbers and bleeding. Turns out, there is a heartbeat and baby seems fine. The also found the cause of the bleeding to be a hemorrage behind the placenta...now that is the only thing I have to worry about...or do I?
Hello Doc
I found the information on yr site very helpful. I got pregnant thru IVF and the Bhcg level after 14 days of embryo transfer was 26.7. The doc advised me rest and to continue medications repeating the bgcg after 3 days. The new level 1s 142.9 (17 days after ET). Is the pregnancy under any risk since this level too is on the lower side? Is complete bed rest essential or can one go out for walks etc?
Thank you for the article. My hCG numbers were low 350 and then doubled 48 hours later to 775. I've been dwelling on them and I'm so early in my pregnancy, barely five weeks. I had an u/s cause I was having lower back pain and it ruled out an ectopic pregnancy. There are two sacs there but since my hCG numbers are low for twins my doctor doesn't think i'll have twins now. I pray that everything is okay. I go back on Monday for another blood test and then on Tues for another u/s. After reading your article i feel more hope.
according to my last period, i should be in my 6th week. Because of spotting for several days, my dr had me do the hcg testing for two days to see if we would be able to see something on u/s. At 5 weeks I was at 7000 hcg. We scheduled sonogram and it showed two sacs, one bigger than the other. He said that at 6 weeks my HCG should be higher for a twin pregnancy. He wanted me to test HCG again because either it is a twin pregnancy or an abnormal pregnancy. I had another HCG test done and since I couldnt wait for monday, I called before office closed today and found out that my HCG level is only at 19,000 now. Im going out of mind with anxiety because the spotting hasnt stopped and if it was a twin pregnancy, does this mean that i lost one? Please help and give me more info!
I am 37 and would have conceieved around day 18-19 of my cycle. Five days after a missed period, I had a positive home preg. test and went to the dr. to confirm. The HCG was only 14, and a second test done 96 hours later was only 32 with a progesterone level of 4.9; also I have had no bleeding or spotting. With my now 4-yr old son, the levels at 27 days post-conception were 6258 HCG and 22.5 progesterone. My dr. put me on progesterone supplements but I do not have a good feeling about this pregnancy. I figure I will take the prog. supplements for two weeks then try to get an ultrasound to see if there is a heartbeat. I do take some comfort that others have seen the HCG double every 4 days instead of two and gone on to have healthy pregnancys, but I am trying to be realistic as well. Would appreciate any advice about the situation. Betty.
hiya i am about 4 weeks pregnant, My period was only due on on monday 18/6/06,My hcg levels on this date was 196ml. Howeever i went to the early pregnany unit last week and on thursady 14/06/06 my hcg was 90ml (this is actualy 3 days b4 my period was due) then 2 days laster16/6/06 my hcg was 137ml, then 18/06/06 196ml. as u can see they are not quite doubling. Do u think this is an ectopic?or could it be that they started testing my hcg before i was even 4 weeks pregnant?. I have been lookin on the internet and some sites says doubling every 48-72hours and 196ml on the day i missed my period seems quite high from what ive read. AM i wishful thinking:( or is my pregnancy likeley to end? i have ad 2 normal pregnancy previously

1 just did my blood work today, 5weeks and i day from LMP. My hcg is 225 and i have been bleeding since last friday night. Waht could be wrong, am going to miscarry?
Last week I went to ER for pain in left side, already knowing pregnant. Dr found heart beat on sono, but was slow...blood work said 6-7 weeks, sono showed 4-5 weeks. A few days ago I went to OB/GYN to have sono, baby has no heartbeat now, said it could be because I'm so early in my pregnancy, but last week there was a HB could the ER doctor NOT have really seen a heart beat? Is there still hope?
I took 3 pregnancy tests and all said that I was pregnant. Went to the doctor and did a transvaginal u/s as well as a 'on the belly' u/s, he did not see any indication of pregnancy. I should mention that I have the condition PCOS and rarely got my period growing up. I started BC pills to normalize my cycle and recently came off of them Jan-07 to try to get pregnant. I was like clockwork until April-07. The last day of my period April 14. I have not had one since.
Doc mentioned that it could 1 or 3 things: Non-starter, Ectopic pregnancy, or it's too early to see anything on the u/s. I am really hoping for the latter.
I am not sure when we conceived considering that I have not menstruated. If I am 1 week pregnant, is it too early to see anything on the u/s?
i found out about 2 weeks ago that i was pregnant. i have been cramping and went to my obgyn. hcg and progesterone levels were both low and gestational sac was not present by u/s. went back 4 days later, hcg still low but gestational sac present. my doctor put me on progesterone. went back to doctor 2 days later, hcg increasing, but not as much as it should. my doctor told me not to be supprised is i miscarry, but dont be shocked if i dont. i go back in 4 days for another u/s. i am only 22 and very healthy i just didnt understand why i was having such a hard time. after i read your blog, i feel better. it really helped ease my mind!!
DR, WARNOCK WHAT DO YOU THINK? HI I AM 6 1/2 WEEKS PREGNANT WENT TO ER ON 7/19/07 AND THEY COULD NOT FIND THE BABY MY HCG COUNT WAS 530 AND THEY TOLD ME I MIGHT HAVE AN ECTOPIC THEY ALSO FOUND A CYST ON MY RIGHT OVARY THAT I ALWAYS HAD AND TOLD ME THAT MIGHT ALSO BE THE CASE OF WHY I WAS HAVING SORENESS IN MY RIGHT LOWER ABDOMEN SO I WENT BACK FOR ANOTHER HCG ON SUNDAY 7/22/07 AND IT READ 781 TODAY MONDAY 7/24/07 HAD VAGINAL U/S DONE AND BABY STILL CANT BE FOUND GOING BACK TOMORROW FOR ANOTHER HCG TO SEE IF IT HAS CHANGED .(BY THE WAY THIS IS MY 4TH PREGNANCY .)JUST KEEPING MY FINGERS CROSSED AND PRAYING FOR BETTER RESULTS THIS BABY IS VERY MUCH SO PLANNED AND WANTED FOR ALL THOSE WITH THIS SITUATION MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND I WISHH YOU ALL THE BEST OF LUCK GOD BLESS ALL- HOPE
My wife's Hcg levels at 6 weeks have leveled off. However, she has no cramps and no spotting. Is the absense of cramps, pain and bleeding a postive sign?
Thanks
I found this blog while searching for information. I hada miscarriage on 8/1/07 but my bhgc levels increased in 2 days instead of decreasing no one knows why, This was helpful in some ways but no one is able to explain why they are rising. Thanks for the help,
Jennifer
Jennifer,
I'm sorry for your loss. To ask Dr. Warnock a question, please visit our Pregnancy Message Board. Be sure to register or sign in first to post your question.
I have an increase in hCG, but the doctors and ultrasounds are telling me that I am not pregnant. What is going on? What could be the possible causes of this?
Thank you so much for this article. After two losses at 5 1/2 weeks and some heavy bleeding in my third pregnancy, we were convinced I was losing. But so far, my HcG indicates otherwise. Your article helped put my numbers into perspective. Fingers crossed that we can actually carry this one.
Oh my gosh, this helps so much!
My husband and I know when we conceived - after July 21 and before July 27. We were told that my HCG levels were good last Tuesday but on Thursday they leveled off. They want to confirm the miscarriage next Tuesday with another ultrasound. There's no bleeding, but Thursday night my breasts were sore. This post doesn't raise my hopes, but it doesn't lower them like my doctor's Friday phone call, either! Thank you!
Thank you so much for making this blog Dr. For some reason my doctor nor anyone else will put me at any ease about the fact that my hCG hormone are not rising appropriatly and I didn't know what that could intell. I have been having some cramping and a little bleeding and they have told me I am high-risk and that I am not on bed rest but totally lazy rest. If I start cramping I am suppose to go home and go to bed but I have a two years old boy and bed rest isn't an option for me. Thank you for giving me a little more confidence.
Sincerely,
Whitney
i went through IVF and got my first blood test 14 days after transfering of the embrios , positive, and also had all the symptoms. Dr. orderd another test hcg cuantitative 48 hours later, it came out 10.4 so he ordered anotherone 48 hours later thisone came out the same, no increase at all. I have not had bleeding , or cramps. Can you give me some advice ? Do you think I misscaried ?

Dr Warnock:
You are a slife saver-your article offered the only sign of hope I could find!! I was 6 weeks pregnant, had my first HCG levels taken which were over 11,000. My OB wanted to take a second blood test and 48 hours later my levels only had risen 4200 (which I believe she tested my 2 days too soon). My OB basically indicated there was a problem and to expect a possible miscarriage. I went 4 days later for my ultrasound, and low and behold, a 7 week fetus with a strong healthy heartbeat!!! The OB then admitted that every women's rise is different and that the U/S is the best indicator of a healthy pregnancy. Again, THANK YOU for your glimmer of hope in your article-for my case, you were right on the money!!
My LMP was Aug 8th (was on the pill when we conceived). My first home pregnancy tests showed positive on 9-2 & 9-3. I had an HCG count on 9-7 and it was 124 and another on 9-9 and it was 216. It was an increase of 74% in 48 hrs. The doctor said everything looked "good" and as long as it was at least 60% greater in 48 hours things seemed normal. I requested another test today 9-11 and will find out results tomorrow. Compared to everyone else, my HCG levels seem very low. I know there's great variability in the HCG counts, but I'm still very worried. Any of you ladies go through the same thing???
Angela, Just wanted you to know that I am going thru the same thing. My LMP was also 8 Aug, but I ovulated late in my cycle. I didn't show positive on a hpt until 8 Sep and then it was still faint. They tested me yesterday and my hcg was at 1634, which is a little low by LMP but pretty normal if I didn't conceive until late in my cycle. Could you have also conceived late? Hope this helps!
This article was very interesting to me. I have had my hcg levels checked four times now. They decreased slightly and then slowly began rising. I was scheduled for a D&C when the doctor called and said to do one more test and another ultrasound. I wish I had never had all these blood tests in the first place and just waited for nature to take it's course.
I am very concerned now woth hcg levels after now 2 weeks that my doctor confirmed I was pregnant but said my hcg levels are not increasing like they should. It was good to read your blog and I only pray God for the best.
last week hcg levels - 1592
a week after - 3492
2 days later - 4411
today(4 days later) 5859
we'll see...on;y God can tell
Thanks a lot
Thank you this was very reassuring! I have been worrying all day because the nurse said my levels didn't double in 2 days. She said not to worry but yet I did since I am pregnant. I have had 2 ultrasounds because I was having some pain but they said they couldn't see nothing wrong yet. Again thanks for the information Doc!
Hi there!
I've had 2 misscarriages in the past 12 months and now I"m pregnant again. On Oct 1th, at excatly 28 LMP, my hcg was 60. On October 3rd it was 80 and Oct 5th it was 154. Today, Oct 15 my dr sent me for another beta. I'm still waiting for the results. Please tell my your opinion on these numbers at 4 weeks and the fact that they're not really doubling. I'm very frighten I will lost this one as well.
Thank you.
Jessica
DR. WARNOCK,
THIS IS MY 4TH PREGANCY AND I AM ABOUT 7-8 WEEKS ALONG RIGHT NOW, I STARTED BLEEDING VERY LIGHTLY ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO BUT NOT EVERY DAY AND NOT SO MUCH TO USE A PAD. I HAD AN ULTRASOUND AT 6 WKS AND THERE WAS A FETAL HEARTBEAT AND MY DR TOLD ME THAT EVERYTHING LOOKED FINE THAT THERE WAS SOME BLOOD AROUND THE SAC BUT THEY BELIEVED IT WAS THE PLACENTA ATTACHING. I WENT IN 1 WEEK LATER AND THEY DID ANOTHER ULTRASOUND AND THIS TIME TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS NO FETAL HEARTBEAT AND SAID THE PREGNANCY WAS NOT VIABLE. HERE IS MY PROBLEM I HAVE NO PAIN VERY LIGHT BLEEDING AND I STILL FEEL PREGNANT. THEY DID AN HCG LEVEL TEST AND THE FIRST ONE WAS AT 10580 THE SECOND DROPPED TO 9500. I HAVE A RUPTURED CYST IN MY LEFT OVARY AND IN THE LAST ULTRASOUND MY LEFT OVARY WAS HUGE. I GUESS I AM HOLDING ON TO HOPE THAT MAYBE MY OVARY IS THE CAUSE OF THE BLOOD AND THE HCG LEVEL. DO YOU THINK BEFORE I GET A D&C I SHOULD HAVE THEM TEST MY HCG LEVEL AGAIN??? OR DO YOU THINK THAT IT IS A LOST CAUSE??? PLEASE PLEASE EMAIL ME AT amolina@centurytel.net
Angela
Angela,
I'm so sorry for the difficulties you're having. Dr. Warnock can't answer your question by email, but you can find great support and answers over on our Pregnancy message boards.
Dr. Warnock

I had a blood pregnancy test done and the hcg levels are 131 at 5 weeks 4 days should I be worried?
I have serious nausea, vomiting, indigestion and diahrrea.I read on webmd that my body might be trying to adjust to the high level of HCG in my body.I am really tired of this discomfort. Is there a way you can reduce the HCG level in your body and not hurt the baby, because i really do not want to this much discomfort. What do you advise i do.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You have made me able to breathe again. :)
I am 8 1/2 weeks pregnant with my first child after trying for 5 years with clomid. My levels started off slow, 40 the first time and 60 the second time. After that they began to double like they should. I go tomorrow for my first ultrasound, reading this article helped ease my worries.
Reading this has helped me alot to calm down. I was recently just told by my Dr. to come in right away tomorrow for an ultrasound due to a prior ectopic pregnancy 10 years ago. He said my HCG levels haven't come up the way he would like them to but that could also mean nothing. He just wanted to make sure my pregnancy is going the way it should.
All I heard was my levels are off and I am probably going to lose my baby...so I frantically came on here researching the meanings of HCG readings and this article helped emensely. So if anyone else is in my shoes and reading this...wait cause the HCG really won't tell you everything but maybe give a small clue or idea for the Dr.'s to go off of.
Hopefully tomorrow will be a happy day!!!
hey i am a 26 year old that has had three miscarriages and one tubal. I am now pregnant and suppose to be 6 weeks but at five weeks my horomones was 93 and a week later they were only 230. my doctor thinks i am either going to miscarry or have an ectopic. I still have all the symptoms of a good pregnancy with no pain i do not get it....
Thank you for the honest truth about HCG levels. This puts my mind at ease for the time being in my pregnancy.
I have had a long history of PCOS and infertility. Last February 2007 I had a gastric bypass in the hopes that I would loose the weight I had been gaining over past few years and begin to ovulate. Around September I started to spontaneously have periods, which have not been predictable but becoming increasing infrequency. My last period occurred November 19th. This last Friday, (January 5th) I developed nausea and right sided abdominal pain. After 2 days of this I went to the ER where I found out I am pregnant. Because of the abdominal pain a concern arose of ectopic pregnancy. An ultrasound was performed, by the time of which the pain had disapated. The ultrasound identified an intrauterine sac and a sac/cyst on the left ovary that could not be distinguished between a corpus luteum cyst or ectopic pregnancy. The HCG level in the ER was 1300. There has not been any abdominal pain since then that that has not been related to a gastrointestinal event (i.e. diarrhea, etc. A repeat HCG on Tuesday morning (Jan 8) was at 1700. Physical exam did not reveal any irregularity with the left fallopian tube. However, my doctor expressed that her gut instinct was that this is an ectopic pregnancy because of the failure of the HCG to double from Saturday evening to Tuesday morning. Because of the irregularity of my cycle it is almost impossible to rely on calculators that say I should be 5 weeks at the moment. From what I am reading here there is a possiblity that this is not an ectopic pregnancy because of the lack of other symptoms that occur in that condition, i.e. continuing abdominal pain, and spotting.
Dr. Warnock:
Thank you soo much for your educated information on hcg levels! You are a true blessing for you helpful information! I am 24 years old and have Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome, and this is my seventh pregnancy(5 miscarriages, 1 stillbirth.)I am high-risk and I just left the ER to get my hcg levels checked. My level is at 13,982, which determines that I am anywhere between 6-10wks. I am getting my first ultrasound in 5-7 days. Letting me know that I have a less than 10% of losing my baby after a heartbeat has been such a relief thanks to you. Please place me in your prayers as I will do the same. Please do not hesitate to write back. Thanks so much!!!!!!

I'm pretty much confused. I was pregnant or thought so and i was 10 weeks along and my hcg started decreasing. So now i am told thats a sign of miscarriage. And now what you are saying Doc i just dont know i am so confused. Thanks for your input anyway.
Fancy
Thankyou, this has been really helpful for me.
I'm 7 weeks into my pregnency and my G.I said though i had good progestron levels ,my HCG was not doubling in 48hrs..i was soo confused and had mixed feelings of anxiety/confusion and was not able to enjoy being pregnant.
But after reading your blog i can rest assured.
Thanks!!
I am pregnant after 9 years delivering stillborn twins. Not sure if my anxiety is getting the best of me. My first HCG test was 2918 the next one two days later turned out to be 3650. I think that maybe this test is making me more nervous - until I read this article. I have another test tomorrow and then a unltrasound on Tuesday. So we will see.
Dr. Warnock
Looking for insight, I was told today by my obgyn that my pregnany doesnt look good. By my last period I should be 8 weeks 5 days. On friday the baby measured 6 weeks 5 days. Went for a repeat sono (vaginal) today and they said baby was smaller but looking on the screen you couldn't really see the size because the baby was so high up and deep inside. But I saw the baby just not as well as we did on friday. My doctor says I lost the baby but I still feel pregnant and have all the symptoms without any cramping and bleeding. How can this be? They did a hcg test and im scared of the results. This would make 3 miscarriages in less than a year. Before I knew inside I had a lost this time I don't feel that. Am I overreacting or just hopeful for good news? Very distressed over this I don't know what to do.

Hello everyone i am a woman who has had three miscarriages and now by the grace of God i am pregnant. So i went to the doctor and they told me that i was not doubling every two days i was upset at first then i had an ultrasound and they said they could not determine the size of the baby and if i would go full term or miscarry he said it was in mother nature hands. But you see i dont believe in mother nature i believe in God and what im going to do is put my trust in God because what the doctors cant see God does when it looks impossible for the doctors thats when God says yes and amen i have faith that when i go back on tuesday they will see exacatly what God has done in my womb because God says whatever we ask for and if we believe what we ask for its already done then we shall have it so i come to encourage any one who needs it that if you seek God in all things he will see you through just trust him for in jeremiah 39:18 it says that Because you have trusted me I Will Preserve Your Life and keep You Safe I the Lord Have Spoken but where it says your and you i but my baby in place of that and then i say the scripture so i encourage you to do the same and if anyone needs prayer please feel free to email me at carolportillo@comcast.net may God bless you all
Hello everyone this is tuesaday on the 12 i went to the doctor and praise be to God my baby heartbeat went from 90 bpm to 120 bpm and the doctor said everything is looking so much better now all i did was first have faith in God pray and stay in my bible and im going to keep on beliving and trusting in God that this will be a full term healthy prgenancy if anyone needs prayer please contact me at carolportillo@comcast.net
I have now had an ultrasound so my HCG tests have stopped. Just to give you a little history, I delvered stillborn twins 9 years ago and to be pregnant again is scary. My HCG tests indicated no rising and then they dropped. So my anxiety went up. I had an ultrasound and guess what - we heard a heartbeat. They were surprised. Your article gave me hope. I have another ultrasound tomorrow, so if anyone gets results like I had, don't give up and have positive thoughts. There are miracles!
This article really helped me a lot. I've recently found out I was pregnant, but due to a long time between LMP and my first positive HPT, we weren't sure of my due date. By LMP, I'd be 10 weeks right now.
So, I had a u/s on Tuesday, where we found a gestational sac and yolk sac, but no fetal pole or heartbeat.
The doctor recommended beta tests over 48 hours, in the expectation of them doubling, with a new u/s scheduled for next Tuesday.
I just got my first results back, with 27000 being the results. I was worrying that if they didn't exactly double by today's bloodwork that something is definitely wrong.
Your article has made me feel much more confident that as long as they've increased by at least 15000, I shouldn't worry too much. Thank you very much for this blog.
i am seven weeks pregnant and when i had my vaginal ultrasound the doctor said the sac looked like a five week sac. i have had bleeding and clotting for about two weeks now. does this mean i am having a miscarriage? is this something rare that happens to some woman?
Thank you for this article, it really eased my mind.
i just have a question i am 5w0d my bhcg was 9!!! i get checked again tomorrow. well the baby be fine? also very low potassium
this is the day of feb 25 went to the doctor and praise be to God my baby is growing at the way God has planned my gift that God has given me is healthy and growing healthy my baby heartbeat was at 176 see all things are possible with God if we just believe i thank God for this joy in my life and if i can pray for anyone out there please email me at carolportillo@comcast.net
hi ok so i dont know what to believe my level dropped 300 points and they done more blood work and now its up six hundred points they say i have lost my baby and they wont do a ultrasound i am however going for a ultrasound the doctor will be doing one and i am going for a second oppioion anyway i want to know if my baby has been miscarried or if the baby could be fine and the results are low thanks
Hi, I had 2 miscarriages within last 12 months. 2 days ago I found out that I was pregnant again. My husband and I are very excited but also worried given our previous experience. They did blood test for hCG levels yesterday and it was 84.( I should be at 4 weeks 2 days)This article has offered a bit of relief. I just want to be able to enjoy being pregnant. I am going in again on Monday, March 10, so pray for me and my baby.Thank you all.
are there any women who has experienced low hcg levels but there pregnancy and baby turned out perfectly healthy?? My levels are only increasing about 10 -20 % at 5 weeks of pregnancy. However, there is a heartbeat. ( At 5 weeks I am at 1784, last week I was 1454.
Hello everyone praise be to my God i went to the doctor today and i am 11 weeks and my baby is doing good with prayer and trusting God i believe this baby shall live and not die i am a living witness that God can do all things but fail he is the alpha and the omega the beginning and the end and he can bring your baby through to so just trust God and believe his word he is able to do all things through Christ Jesus if anyone needs prayer contact me at carolportillo@comcast.net
It was encouraging to read your article and the other messages. I am 7 weeks pregnant. I had dark brown spotting for 7 days and had 3 HcG tests done, the first 4,500 then 6,200 and then 7,300. I was very discouraged and told I was most likely having a miscarriage. Yesterday I had an ultrasound and saw a heartbeat! I was shocked! It is still hard not to worry about the HcG levels, but this website has given me more peace of mind.
tHATS GREAT THAT YOU Heard A HEARTBEAT. IS your MD OPTIMISTIC? Also how far apart were your hcg test. My numbers were not doubling either.
I'm not sure I should feel releive yet. My cycle is irregular. LMP was 1/20, and I'd have guess that my ovulation date should fall on 3/10-3/16.
Here is my hcg levels:
3/10 - 3300
3/12 - 4700
3/19 - 9300
Have done u/s on 3/10 only see the sac. and 3/19 with the yolk sac but no fetus or heartbeat yet. Also, the sac doesn't grow as expect at 1mm per day. Should I be concern? I'm really ...really worried now.
I am 5 Wks today. I went to the Dr. on Tue. my HcG levels was 320 and went back on Thur. they were 760. I went to the ER today my levels 1578. I was only 4 wks when we started the testing. I didn't beleive we were pregnanet at first I had signs of a period, then I spotted and bleed for one day. It all stopped. I have one child 7 years of and ectopic three years later and miscarriage one year after that. Now we really want this baby and I am scared we will lose it.
Praise be to God i am now 17 weeks and the baby is doing really good God is so awesome i want you all to know never give up keep trusting in God and he will see you through i am going to keep on praying and beliving him for the miracle i know is to come. i have a new email address it is c_portillo@att.net
I wrote a comment a few weeks ago with the details of my irregular hormone levels and then an ultrasound at 7 weeks that showed a heartbeat. Unfortunately, I lost my baby at 11 weeks.
so sorry to hear of your loss - I too loss my fetus as well. I am keeping the faith I will have another baby and it will be healthy.
Felicia

Dear Dr. Warnock,
Thank you very much for your article and the information which is crucial to us when we are faced with so much confusion.
I had 3 frozen embryo transfered through IVF 14 days ago. My pregnancy test came back positive. My HCG levels on 6/2 were 96 (high according to my dr) and then on 6/4 it dropped to 78. I will be tested tomorrow again.
My dr. mentioned the possibility of stopping the fertility medication if the numbers are low. What should I do, since after reading this blog I should wait to do the first ultrasound?
Please help...
Dr. Warnock,
Thank you so much for your article. It does shed some light on all of the confusing information you find and hear! My LMP was on April 14. My husband and I were trying to get pregnant so my doctor also prescribed clomid. After one dose I got pregnant! I was thinking that I was about 8 weeks. I went to the doctor yesterday and had a vaginal ultrasound. The doctor said it looked like I was really early! We were able to see the sac but no heartbeat. He sent me to get my hcg levels tested and I go back to get them tested again tomorrow. Is there something I need to be worried about or is he just trying to figure out how far along I am? I have had NO bleeding or cramping, just the regular pregnancy symptoms. Any information would be appreciated! Thank you!
Dr. Warnock,
I have a question with HCG levels. 8 days ago my levels were at 113, this is when I found out through a home test that I was pregnant. But then 5 days after they dropped back down to 48. Now 48 hours later they are back at 67. What does this mean? I had an ultrasound today and they said they did not see anything. So they are unsure of what is happening. Can you offer any advice. This is my 4th miscarriage.
Jen
praise be to God i went for my 24 week ultrasound and everything is normal baby looks great at first they said my placenta was low lying but not in the ultrasound they said it was at high risk for down sydrome but baby looked healthy in ultra sound see what prayer can do God is able and willing to bring healing and blessings to our lives i am now 26 weeks praise God my savior if anyone needs prayer im at c_portillo@att.net
Yet again, WebMD proves very useful. I was searching on B-HCG levels because I just called the lab and got the results which seemed somewhat lower than I thought and was looking for info/answers/sollice to help ease the nervous tummy.
Thank you so much.
Hello Dr. Warnock,
I have a question about when I became pregnant. I have very irregular periods (once in a while will miss a full month). I somehow got 3 different positive ovulation tests in one month 3/9, 3/18/, and 3/30. My last mentrual period was 2/21.
I ended up taking an emergency contraceptive pill on 4/1. On 4/10 I had a feeling of pregnancy and took a pregnancy test which came out positive. On 4/14 I had a blood HCG level of 286. They did an ultrasound on me that showed a cystic structure in my uterus, but no sac. 48 hours later my HCG was 827 and in 3 more days it was 2700.
I would like to know if I took the emergency contraceptive pill when I was already pregnant or took it on time and it didn't work. It's ok! We are both very happy about the pregnancy. My irregular cycle is just so unpredictable it's hard to really know when I conceived. Is it possible I did take this pill on time? And, do you know if there is any potential harm to a fetus because of this?
Thank you very much!
Scarlett
My daughter is a nervous wreck, and I am hoping that you can give me some words of hope to ease her stress.
Her cycle was "due," but on the due date she had just a tiny bit of spotting, not cycle. A few days later she took a urine test that was inconclusive. Her husband suggested they see a real doctor, their urine test was inconclusive, but their blood test was positive for pregnancy. Then they told her the levels were "very low" and she could have an ectopic pregnancy. I thought they probably were measuring the gestation dates incorrectly.
She went back in for another blood test to measure levels and a sonogram. The HCG levels were up, in a very positive way, and they found a placental sac, but said it was "much too small to see if there was a baby or not."
They told her to come back in a week. A week later the HCG levels had more than doubled, but they said the placental sac hadn't grown much.
They changed her estimated gestation dates. The new gestation date is closer to when she thinks she probably conceived. It is now at 5 1/2 weeks.
They told her it could just look that way because of the angles of the sonograms, and that she might not be as far as along as she is. They also used the phrase, "in a different place" and "might look a little smaller" when talking about the sac. (Which really confused me since the HCG levels are so very much higher.)
They said to come back in a few weeks. In the mean time, she is convinced that this new sonogram means there is no baby, and she will miscarry the sac. Her husband is convinced otherwise.
She is having morning sickness, tender breasts, food cravings and tiredness, but the anxiety over this is driving her insane and keeping her from sleeping.
Are there good, viable, medical explanations of a positive nature that would explain this? What could they possibly mean by it "being in a different place"?
All of this came from a nurse, not the doctor. Attempts to call the doctor always end up with her redirected to the nurse. We are looking for a doctor we can communicate with, but they keep saying, "She has a doctor, she should stay there."

Dr. Warnock
This is my 11th pregnancy, never had an ectopic, 2 m/c, 8 children, 4 premature. I took pregnancy tests on an off for 2mos cause my m-cycle was late, all were neg. 3wks ago I took another test and it was negative also but with lmp on 6/25/08. I then waited about 4 days & took another test and it was positive. Hcg 167 8/15, 156 8/17, 165 8/18, no cramping unless I sit on something hard like the floor, & no bleeding. Dr says may be ectopic or already miscarried but never checked my prog level. I have a history of strange pregnancies and mis-calculations. I write down each time my husband and I you know just to help even out pregnancy dates, I just didn't during this time. But my bp is normal, no pain, no bleeding, what's going on? HELP PLEASE!! My last m/c was in march 08. I was pregnant with twins. Dr didn't see it soon enough because they mistaken them for my ovaries. I'm lost with this pregnancy. HELP

Hello..I have read all of the posts, and so far none have really been the same as my situation. I am 22 years old. I took 2 hpt's a few weeks ago that came out positive, this was a Saturday. On Monday (labor day) I started spotting, then bleeding heavier (like a period). I went to the ER Tuesday and they did a HCG..it was at 441 (I was 5 1/2 wks). I went to my OB on Thursday and had another test..it was at 471. Then Tuesday of the next week I had a third test and it was at 570 (I was little over 6wks). My Dr. says that I haven't miscarried since the levels are rising (although not at all normal) I am scheduled to go back in this coming up Tuesday (9/16). I am still bleeding like a normal period. I would just like to know if anyone has had a similar situation. And if this is cause for me to worry (although I have been..believe me..)
Krystal,
I went through a similar situation almost a year ago. I was about 5-6 weeks pregnant when I started spotting then bleeding (like a normal period). I went in for an ultrasound, and they saw a sac but no fetus. The dr told me I would miscarry and that it would happen naturally over the course of a few days. I think I bled for 5-6 weeks before it finally stopped. It was an awful experience, and one that I hope no one else has to go through. I pray your pregnancy turns out normal.
Some positive news, I went to the dr today for a blood test which confirmed pregnancy. I am again about 5 weeks along. If everything turns out normal, this will be baby #3. My other two children are perfectly healthy and normal, so even if you do miscarry, do not lose hope; you will have a healthy baby when the time is right.
krystal,
iam the 26 year old that lost the baby at 26 weeks and after that i had 3 miscarrages,my cases were similar to yours the hcg levels were rising really slow, just like you. My gyno said that when this happens that means that the pregnancy is not developing well and it will get to a stage where it will stop on its own.if that does happen try to avoid a d/c unless you really need it. but with a case like yours you really need a miracle. Anyway i hope that everything goes well for you and that you dont loose the pregnancy, keep your hopes up and if it doesn't work out, try not to stress it happens to everyone your not the first or last. goodluck!
Thanks for this posts..I am trying to be positive about everything but it is really hard. I have a 4 year old that I had no problems with when I was pregnant. This is my second pregnancy and it is really taking a toll on my emotions.
hey! i am 24 years old. I just found out that i am 2 weeks pregnant considering i havent been with anyone since august 30th. its september 15th and i expected my period on the 17th, but normally its early..i took 5 urine tests and i got 2 faded lines and 2 "pregnant digitals".. when i went and got my blood checked, my hcg level was at 32.45 and <1000. is this too low or is it low because im only 2 weeks, or 4 weeks from lmp..
Hello again everyone...I just wanted to update. I went in for another hcg test tuesday. The levels had dropped to 193. I miscarried that night. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Hopefully my husband and I can start trying again soon. We really want to have another child, and hopefully this was a one time thing. I don't know if we can go through this again. It really took a toll on our emotions.
I am fourty years old and too old for this. Gone through a still born and two miscarriages. This is my sixth pregnancy but i only have two children, They are very healthy and beautiful. My concern is that i am currently 5 weeks and 4 days. I have had some spoting and bad cramping My hcg levels started at 129 within one week they went to 29,244 then one day later at 5 wks. 2 days they went to 45,371. My doctor said there was definately something wrong and was probably passing this one. How negative is that could it be twins? She said there was only one sac detected but i thought that identical twins shared a sac where fraternal would have two. She said it was climbing too high for my gestational age and would eventually rupture because of not enough room. Plus my spotting and cramping. Should i just wright this one off as another loss or should i just stay on bedrest which seem to be the only thing that keeps the blood from stopping. It is hard because i already have a 10 year old and a 2 year old that need me. Any advice would be helpful. Also are these hcg levels normal? Tina
this is a reply to the 24 year old who is 2 weeks pregnant. try not to rely on the home urine test, they are not very accurate, its better to have a (beta hcg)that is a blood test. since you don't know when the pregnancy happened, levels of hcg in the blood should double every 24-48 hours some people double at 72 hours that is also normal. if you are worried that the levels of hcg are low, try and have a 48 hour test that, way you will know if the levels are rising properly. goodluck!
this is to krystal,
iam the 26 year old that lost several pregnancies. iam really sorry to hear about you miscarrage, but now you have an angle in heaven! i hope you never go through it again.
i've been through it several times and i know that it is really hard. i just wanted to say keep your hopes up and i hope that everything goes well for you next time.
to tina,
i have had alot of pregnancy complications, but nothing similar to yours. I read alot about pregnancy.
very high levels of hcg could mean:-molar pregnany
- multiple pregnancy
- miscalculaion of pregnancy.
with your case i think that you haven't miscalculated, and the doctor is saying that there is only one sac,so i think that you should monitor you blood pressure. and with high levels of hcg you are probably getting alot of morning sickness.i dont know what is really going on with you but your case is pretty hard. one more thing try looking up on yahoo or google (high levels beta hcg) or molar pregnancy. i hope everything goes well for you and keep your hopes up. goodluck!
I am somewhere between 4-6 weeks pregnant. My dr is montoring my hcg levels due to previous etopic pregnancy. My levels were as follows 75 Tuesday, 209 Thursday, and somewhere in the 400's Monday. They did not double over the course of approx 96 hours. What does this mean?? I am worried sick. I have to go back to the dr for more blood work tomorrow. Can you give me some insite on what could be going on???
Hi ,Based on my last period I am 7 weeks pregnant, but my hcg level and the u/s shows that I am just 4 weeks 2 days along.
IN the u/s they couldnt see the sac or the heart beat, my doctor says I could have a miscarriage, but I think it s just an early pregnancy since my periods are not very regular .
Can any one help?
I m so stressed, my doctor wants to see my hcg again every 2 days to see if it s rising. so far it has been rising perfectly even though started very low, started at 38 4weeks LMP , went up to 179 three days after and 667 three days after that.
Any help or any similar experience?
PRAISE GOD PRAISE GOD I HAD MY SON ON OCT 1 AT 5:57PM 2008 HE WEIGHED 7 POUNDS 3 OUNCES GOD IS GOOD WHAT A MIRACLE TO SEE HIM IN MY ARMS AND TO THINK THEY WERE TRYING TO TELL ME ABOUT MY HCG LEVELS WERE NOT NORMAL BUT IF YOU TRUST IN GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE I AM SO HAPPY AND I SHARE THIS WITH YOU ALL TO LET YOU KNOW GOD IS GOOD ALWAYS BELIEVE THE REPORT OF GOD NOT THE DOCTORS.IF ANYONE WANTS PRAYER EMAIL ME AT C_PORTILLO@ATT.NET GOD BLESS YOU ALL
Is there validity in the claim that women who have naseau are less likely to miscarry? thanks.
Dear Dr.
I start spotting and it continued for over a week. Nothing showed on u/s, so they started hcg testing. I am currently 5weeks and 2 days along. My org. hcg they took was 864 (thurs). On Monday it was 5500. I think that's good. Someone said something about twins...half jokingly. Is my number normal or do I need to be concerned with a possilbe mulitple pregnancy?
dear dr
hi there i am 33 and i have had 6losses not been able to get past 4 weeks, but by some mircal i am 6weeks and 2days on but my hcg levels are confusing me and my nure not seen the doctor yet can anyone shed any light my hcg on mon 20th were 26,195 then wed 22nd 30,558 then fri 24th were 35,448 my nurse is saying it could be twins as my levels are high but iam getting confused because there are not double is there anyone out there had the same i have to go back on mon 27th for another hcg test realy is starting to get to me. all my nurse is saying is if i get any pain to go stright to hospital.
Dr. Warnock,
I had a d&c at 13 weeks for a missed miscarriage with twins back in April. At that time my dr. reassured me that with my next pregnancy I would have an u/s around 6 weeks. We recently moved, and both obgyn clinics here say that they don't do ultrasounds before 10 weeks because "You can't see anything". I know for a fact friends of mine have had peanut checks at 6 weeks and saw SOMETHING. I'm now 5w3d pregnant. I had my beta levels checked at 4w5d and then again two days later at 5weeks. They were 1197 the first day and 2178 the second. My nurse said these levels were low, but everything I've read says they're way normal. Then when I asked what units they measured in she said she didn't know. I asked what kind of beta levels they were testing and she said "Uhh quad..something maybe" And I said "Quantitative beta hcg?" and she said "Oh yeah probably that!"
Am I crazy or do these people seem to be a bit misinformed? And what should I do? I'm a little gunshy with this pregnancy.
Thank you thank you thank you. After a history of severe endo and surgeries we were told that we may not be able to get pregnant. I was having sever abdominal pain and feared the worst. Imagine my surprise when they did a vag u/s and saw a gestation sac 3 days before my period was due. We are over the moon. Took blood test and the levels are low. Have to go back in for more testing. Your article is a godsend. I decided last night that I would just enjoy each day because we never thought we would get this far. So no matter how long this baby sticks around I will be happy for whatever time we have together and the hope that comes with it. Your article was good for my soul and I
will take your advise to heart to releax and not but to much stock in the number. Cramping has let up a lot and there is no bleeding so we will just wait and see what will happen. But at least now I feel like I can breathe and just take one day at a time.
Dr Warnock,
I had very light spotting on Monday morning that I only noticed when I wiped my self after going to the bathroom, I am supposed to be 11 weeks 5 days. Went to Dr's sent me for quantitive bloods and ultrasound. Sonographer very bluntly told me 'there is something there but no heartbeat" I was devestated and had lay there sobbing while she finished the U/S. Quantitives came back at 35000 which is still in normal range for 9 - 12 weeks but they say my baby died at 8 weeks... I am very confused shouldn't my levels have dropped in the 4 weeks since my baby supposedly died.?????

Thank God for this! I was freakin' out about these dang HCG levels and you know what-your right-at this point there is not much I can do, but your blog made me feel much more comfortable! Thanks for calming this paniced mommy-to-be down! :)
Thank you for the very informative article - I have a question:
After getting two positive home pregnancy test results, I went to the doctor and he performed an i/v sonogram (ultrasound) - this was 5.5 weeks after the first day of my last period and approximately 3.5 weeks after conception. The sonogram only showed an empty sac, which measured a good size and shape (according to the doctor). The doctor expressed concern and drew blood to measure my HCG level. The results came back with a 27,983 beta hcg - which the doctor said should correspond with seeing a heart beat. He drew more blood 3 days later to check whether the hcg levels had doubled, however, he is very pessimistic and says that most likely the pregnancy will need to be terminated. Please advise whether there could be any hope in this case - is it possible that despite the high HCG levels it may still have just been too early to see anything other than the sac?
Thank you very much.
Thank you for this article. I have had 6 prior pregnancies and all were miscarrages. This is my 7th pregnancy, my first hCG reading was 49 and 6 days later is was 120. With my prior hx I was worried. I was comforted by this article. So far no bleeding or cramping so I am keeping my fingers crossed.
This is the reason that doc's say to wait until the 3rd month to let people know your pregnant and to have your first doc. appointment/ultrasound! Cause alot of women, inlcuding myself, have miscarriages early on. Unless you have a history of problems conceiving or with miscarriages...i wouldnt be so concerned with hcg test. Cramps and spotting and low hcg numbers dont mean anything in the grand scheme of things. If your going to miscarry..chance are you cant stop it. If you have had several then go see the fertility docs. But most of all, stop all this needless testing. HCG levels fluctuate during your pregnancies..did the docs tell you that??
I just wanted to say thank you, you put ease on my mind. The article is very helpful.
Hi, I had two miscarriage in 2008 and became pregnant in Jan 2009. My HCG levels:
3.6 wks 280 HCG
4.3 wks 406 HCG increase of only 45% in 4 days
4.5 wks 629 HCG increase of only 55% in 2 days
Next day at 4.6 wks had some spotting. Went for 1st ultrasound to rule out ectopic pregancy. I had a small hematoma and nothing could be really seen but ultrasound tech seemed too make out a misshapen sac. Dr. on call didn't think pregnancy was viable and was still worried it could be ectopic so she mentioned that I should do an endometrial biopsy and if there was pregnancy tissue it could be ruled out it was ectopic. I did not want to terminate a pregnancy unless I knew for sure so I told her I would wait and I wasn't feeling any pain but I was still worried about my tubes rupturing or even losing my life.
Took another blood test next day at 4.7 wks and HCG was 1355 - an increase of 115% in 2 days! I get a call from the nurse and she schedules me for another blood test 2 days later and she is more optimistic now but she still told me too look out for any pain. Next HCG # was 2305 - an increase of only 70% - not as great but not as bad as my first #'s. I had another ultrasound 10 days later at 6.5 days. I was cautiously optimistic. Lo and behold a normal looking sac with a heart beat of 131!! I truly thank GOD for helping my pregnancy thus far. I am still very worried because of my prior miscarriages. I have been seeing an Reproductive Specialist. I am 37 yrs old and have very high FSH and was getting ready to do my first round of IUI but got pregnant naturally. I go for another ultrasound next week and pray that the baby is healthy and fine. Good luck to you all and God Bless.
i am very young and feel pregnant i have all the symptoms but vomiting. i have taken pregnancy tests but all are negative.
Should i take a blood test?
are my HCG's to low to detect pregnancy?
Went to ER on Friday for brownish discharge. They took HCG level and it was 72,071. Today is Monday and went back to have a repeat and HCG dropped to 70,*** (something) they did both types of ultrasounds an we got to see my baby and it has a wonderful heartbeat of 167. Cervix is hard and closed so doesnt "SCREAM" misscarriage but what can be wrong?
Here are my facts:
Jan 14, 09 D and C done to remove fibroid.
Jan 27, 09 very very light period
Started trying in Feb 09 to conceive. Took two pregnancy tests and they came back with very paint positive lines.
Feb 28, 09 Thought I had my period = very dark brown bleeding and some mild cramps.
March 1 - heavy red bleeding
March 2-3 - very very light bleeding
March 6 - took hpt, came back positve
March 6 - dr. ordered blood tests. tests showed very low progesterone levels
march 13 - redid blood tests, tests showed very low HCG levels (456)
March 13- ER did ultrasound, showed sac in my uterus
March 16- dr. redid blood test and my hcg levels still very low (over 500) but ultrasound showed sac.
My Dr. doesn't think my pregnancy is viable. I am 35 yrs old, soon to 36. What can you make of this?
hcg lvl 1. ultrasound says 5 wks prego but no pole in sac all home test come up neg. ive had 2 miscarries. should i be worried
I am almost 5 weeks and have had 1 miscarriage a few months ago. We got pregnant through IUI and my HCG levels went from 72,203, 310. I go in for another test tomorrow but I am really worried that they wont double again. My doctor says they are low for almost 5 weeks. is there anything I can eat/do/ect.. that could help? Is there a chance that I could have a normal pregnancy with this low of numbers?
qThis article has provided me with some hope. I believe I implanted on or around 3/11 or 3/12 b/c I had spotting instead of my regular period. I went in for an vaginal ultrasound on 3/30 and the doctor found a sac but no baby. I had blood work done that same day and was told progesterone level was good and HcG level was 1200. I had another blood test done on Wednesday and was told again progesterone level was good but my HcG level didn't double. It's at 1800. I'm going in for another ultrasound on Monday but I am very worried. Does anyone have any advise or a similar story? I have not spotted and have had several pregnancy symptoms. I would really appreciate it!
I AM 5 WEEKS PREGNANT TODAY AND WENT TO THE DR BECAUSE I STARTED BLEEDING YESTERDAY. I HAVE SINCE QUIT BLEEDING BUT STILL HAVE MILD CRAMPING. I HAD BLOOD WORK , ULTRA SOUND, AND A PELVIC EXAM. the dr. said the exam looked good. the hcg blood levels were 1,800 and the ultra sound just showed a sac messuring 4 weeks and 1 day but nothing was visable in the sac. i think i am having a miscarriage as i have had one before at 13 1/2 weeks. the dr. is trying to be hopeful but i don't think i can handlemuch false hope. do you think i am losing the baby?
last july we found out we were pregnant (1st) we went to find out the sex at about 18 weeks, only to discover the baby had not developed kidney. I had to have a D and E...we were told to wait 2 menstrual cycles...we waited and found out we were pregnant feb 2, a week later i miscarried. We found out march 24th that i am pregnant again, went 2 weeks ago for hcg, monday it was 139, wed (48 hrs later) it was 410, a week later it was 9,367...that was 4 days ago. Sat (2 days ago) we went for our ultrasound (transvaginal)...the sac is 6 weeks, however the sac is empty no heart beat....i'm starting to lose hope
I am 34 and we have one beautiful little boy, who was conceived via IVF. We have just undergone our second IVF and the HCG levels are not rising appropriately.
14dpo- 142
17 dpo- 407 (good increase)
19 dpo- 633 (not so great)
21 dpo- 1003 (not so great; 58% increase)
We have had an ultrasound which shows 1 sac in my uterus, a strong lining, and no signs of an ectopic pregnancy. They also think they may have seen a smaller, second sac, which is possible since we transferred 2 embryos.
Your article was helpful, as my RE wants to rely more on ultrasounds at this point as opposed to blood work, and I wasn't sure why. I think it's just a waiting game, and the outcome is in God's hands. Thank you for your article, though, as it does help me keep the flicker of hope alive within me.

dr.warnock....
I recently found out that I'm pregnant but then a day after I found out I'm pregnant I started bleeding but not heavy more like spotting.I went 2 the ER and the dr. said my hcg levels was fine and I was ok and sent me home. The week b4 I found out I was pregnant I went to the ER complaining of dizziness, nausea feeling like i was going to faint the dr never performed a pregnancy test but told me I had vertigo gave me regalin for nausea told me it seems like something viral also and sent me home.Yesterday I started cramping really bad and also bleeding heavily and then I passed what looked like clots or tissue,so I went 2 the ER where they checked my hcg levels and from Friday it was 3000+ and yesterday Monday it was 1000+ could this mean I was miscarrying? On Friday after a vaginal ultrasound they could not see or hear the fetus heart beat. My obgyn is out of town till next week & there is no one covering for him,I'm not cramping as much as I was yesterday but it looks like I'm having a period now, what should I do? My boyfriend & I really wanted to have a baby. Please give a quick suggestion. Thanks for your help.

This is my story. I am almost 23 years old and this is my third pregnancy. I have two healthy children with no prior complications. Based on the first day of my last period, my doctor estimated me to be 7 weeks, 5 days along at my first appointment. When we did the ultrasound, we found the yolk sack and a fetal pole in the uterus, but no heartbeat. The fetal pole measured me to only be 6 weeks 2 days. So I got My levels tested. They were 19,470 the first time, and 48 hours later had dropped to 18,660. The doctor told me I'm miscarrying but I've had no bleeding or spotting whatsoever. I've been so upset and crying all day. I have an ultrasound in a week to confirm that the pregnancy is no longer viable. I don't know if having hope now would be having false hope or not.
