Why Worry About Adding Whole Grains?
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Last week I wrote about the search for whole wheat bread my girls would eat. Here's why you should care about adding whole grains to your diet:

  • They are digested slowly which is a good thing toward delaying recurring hunger and helping you feel full on less food at a meal
  • They help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes
  • They may lower BMI
  • They may increase insulin sensitivity
  • They reduced the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in some studies
  • They reduce the risk of heart disease and heart attack
  • They reduce blood cholesterol levels
  • They reduce blood pressure
  • They reduce the risk of stroke
  • They reduce cancer risk
  • They reduce the risk of gastrointestinal cancers
  • They reduce the risk of oral and esophagus cancer

What about a person with a 'gluten intolerance'? How do I get enough grains? I'm having a hard time with this. Thank you

There is a Bread made with sprouted wheat called Ezekial, and it comes in several varieties...there is no gluten as it is made from the green sprout...its quite tasty and has a sort of nutty flavor.

How do you lose the spare tire that forms from gluten. Some say exercise won't take it away. I've never been fat on my life now that I'm 58 and have only one hand to do free weights and no floor exercises to hold myself up ?
    Thank You

this is totally misleading, because it isn't about adding grains, but replacing refined grains. if a person isn't eating grains in the first place, there might not be a benefit to adding whole grains.

    Ezekiel Bread:
If those sprouts are wheat, rye or barley or any of thier derivatives they are NOT okay for the Celiac as it is the protien "in" the plant itself that we have the problem with. There is not a process to remove the protien from the plant. So we must seek out alternative grains.
