Constipation - It's all about the poop
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Instead of "pillow talk," in my world it's more like "poop talk". This morning I had just made my oblilgatory two bag lunches for my daughters and sent one daughter off to high school and I had a few minutes before taking my other daughter to junior high. So, I did what any other computer dependent professional does, I checked my email.

One of them was from a writer who interviews me often and this morning she had an interesting question for me:

What are some of the symptoms of a lack of fiber? Constipation...and?

To which I quickly responded:

That's the only 'symptom' I can think of. Your poop won't have as much buoyancy if you aren't eating enough fiber too (literally your poop will tend to sink in the toilet) and your movements might be more painful or difficult to pass. The fiber holds onto some water as it forms into stools and this makes your stools softer and easier to eliminate.

Before I had a chance to step away from my computer I got her response:

Thanks for the quick reply about poop, I appreciate it very much Elaine!

I wrote back:

I can talk about poop before my morning coffee--I'm a health professional (LOL).

To help us all get that wonderful fiber, here a some tips I put together in Why You Need More Fiber -- and 6 Easy Ways to Get It.

I understand this completely. I used to have the same buyoncy problem stated above, as far as sinking goes. Once the problem was amended, I had numerous "floaters". I stopped almost all of my fiber consumption to keep it at the proper semi-floating level, but still, like life-vests, they float. How can this whole submarine game be avoided in the bathroom?
Also, an occaisional pea is swallowed during a meal. During times of sinkage, the undigested peas float. Why?

I know I need more fiber. I have tried Benefiber, which I had no trouble using because it disolved easily in beverages or I could mix it in my oatmeal. The problem is that it made the already problem of flatulence (gas) a LOT worse. Any ideas? My husband uses and swears by Metamucil but he also has terrible gas. We find this very embarrasing! We take a product used by ostomy patients which helps a little to disguise the odor (It's called Devrom). My stools are so large and they sink, causing plumbing problems! We just bought a toilet with an extra wide hole in the toilet bowl to avoid this problem. HELP! This isn't a pleasant topic but I am glad that constipation is being addressed.

My daughter goes through constipation and diareah cycles. She doesn't have a Bowel movement for about a month and when she does it is so compacted and big that it plugs the toilet. She has been this way for the majority of her life. She is currently 11. Before the big poop she has leakage that usually ends up in her underpants and she doesn't seem to have any sensations that tell her she has to go.
I have taken her to doctors and they don't know but this problem is not ok. Can you help me stop mopping up after flooded toilets every month and washing out poopie panties.

Green Poop symptom - I get this every time I drink purple or blue coolade, lucky charms if there is blue dye or purple dye, blue or purple frosting, blue or purple candy.

2ndly: Most recently, if I am on a detox diet, and it is clearing out my liver.

Thirdly: Really hot foods will tend to put me into detox and I will have green stool.

I was a nurses aide where someone had purple stool... plus diahrea that was very serious SEE YOUR DOCTOR about hepatitis or other liver problems.

Overly Large Stools/Constipation/leakage:

My son was molested when he was around 6 , he then demonstrated that he did not want to poop and when he did, he would even have some initial bleeding, he then went through huge poops the diameter of the huge large candles. He would leak into his underwear and this went on for years.

Solving the problem:

1. Drink 2 cups WARM water every morning.

2. One cup at every meal.

3. Full cans of corn at a time first thing in the morning-season it to the childs liking. Alternate with fresh carrots with a dip like ranch dressing to keep it palatable. After a while she will get tired of the regiman so keep getting it diversified. The corn was the most effective for my son.

4.Stay away from breads - eggs - peanut butter - and lots of meat - all these will constipate-

5.Explore fruits, vegetable recipes

6. If she loves cereal, let her eat this as a dry snack and try to limit it to a cup in the afternoons while she is watching tv or doing homework.

If she is lactose intolerant, use this to her advantage and have her drink a cup in the evenings with chocolate or strawberry quick mix to keep it palatable. It will help her keep the stool loose.

7.Keep the meats for noon time. It appears to be a lifelong problem that she will need to keep in control of, once the colon appears to have overly stretched it is prone to doing the same thing.

8. Whether she needs to use the bathroom or not encourage her to go with a warm glass of water. It is important to keep her regulated because she will gain weight after a while of this, and the colon could be more susceptible to disease and cancer. If she begins to gain weight she could start going on weird diets when it is just the need to get the feces out of her system. She should be pooping every day one to two times.

I did get my son to poop more regularly but it is important to impress upon your child to learn to SELF- REGULATE so that she is not always dependant on you to do it for her.

Talk to the school teacher and mention the problem so that the teacher is aware that she will need to use the restroom when she gets the urge to go... talk to the principle and let him know how important that she goes to the bathroom when she gets the urge. They will need to understand the reason. Otherwise if she is forced to hold her poop it will further constipate her. Make sure she is able to carry a drink bottle in the classroom. Our school is required to do so for the health of the child. Investigate your school policies and the state health policies for your school district.

I grew up with spina bifita and always had to deal with the same problem of contipation but not over large poops, but now I have colon problems as a result of not having had adequate nutritional care as a child.

Take care.

What if you're an adult and your poop is green and you haven't eaten anything green?

I have IBS and I cannot go unless I take Mirlax everynight before bed. I have been using this for over a year now. If I skip a night then the bloating, and pain comes back. My doctor knows I'm still taking this but I afraid my body will become depended on it. But I also don't want to stop cause the pain is really bad.

I did a search on WebMD for "green stool" and the results indicate that it can be caused by vitamin supplements and certain medications. You might try that search and see if any of the medications or supplements are ones you take.

To anonymous at 6:39pm with diarrhea,

Here's an explanation of diarrhea and why your stool color can change.

I need some help here, I am having constant diarrhea. Every morning I usually go to the bathroom at least 3 times(this is all in a hour in a half) All of my morning bathroom visits is nothing but diarrhea. Today my stool was black, yesterday it was green! Sometimes it has an unusual smell (smells like metal). Sometimes the smell is so bad (I know it's not supposed to smell like bed of roses!) the gag reflexes kick in. I haven't had a normal poop in over ten years. Can someone please tell me something.

i find it very interesting how much people are concerned, and from a person who's had issues all their lives, i'll hopefully help!
i have severe IBS - Irritable Bowel Sydnrome. I've been to see many specialists and have the following pieces of advise:
- check you diet. Poop changes color and consistancy with what you eat, when you eat it, what part of the "cycle" you are in (for women), etc. I can only eat salads for lunch and the two before i ovulate. weird, huh? if i don't follow my body's "rules" - i pay for it!
- food journals always helped me throughout the years (and yes, recording bowel movements) to discuss with your doctor. i felt crazy - but you learn alot!
- stress and it's play on your BMs - main cause for my IBS and for the change in diahrrea and constipation (seen alot in sports athletes

IBS is something that probably won't be cured with my body, but it is manageable. you just have to find what works and what doesn't, and while I sometimes have to cut beer out of my Friday nights and eat yogurt alot (hate the taste, love the benefits)- that's what works and makes me feel "normal".

Regarding gas wtih fiber supplements: I will admit that I am a fairly gassy individual, but have had GREAT success with a product from Standard Process; I believe it is called SP FIber. It does not make you gassy, bloated, constipated, have diarrea, none of the bad things. It regulates your ourput and puts you on a wonderful schedule. Even when I am not taking it, my body is now conditioned to go without the fibers help. This is only available through health professionals. Get it- it is great!

hi..I need some advice. My 10 year old daughter typically has small-medium round stools..almost every day. My other kids seem to have more regular kinds of stools. We focus on high fiber, and place a fiber food additive at her doctor's suggestion. Yet, I was just wondering if other parents have a similar situation. I can say that my daughter seems to worry...and takes everything in. I often wonder if it is because my job has taken me many places and, with that, several moves. I hope not.

Thanks for your advice.

In response to anonymous at 12:44 pm...

Atheletes as a whole tend to defecate more than the average human being. As a dancer, I expell my waste at least two or three times a day. This is caused by a combination of extra movement from our bodies, which can speed the movement of digestion in the intestines, diets containing more calories to replace the ones burnt off, amd a constant necessity of the body's hydration, taking more water from your stools. It's not anything to be worried about. I hope this helps.

In response to 1257 Anonymous.
I too had severe pain, had upper and lower exams, found no answers. I was told it could be Celiac disease. I went on that crazy diet for months with no improvement. I suffered for 2 1/2 years. I finally blocked off completely. I vomited one whole month. If I ate anything, 3 days later it came back up, undigested. Finally the emesis smelled like stool. After another test, this time barium swallow, they found I had a mechanical blockage in my ileum, the lower part of the small intestine. The blockage resolved with hospitalization and an NG tube. At that point, no one wanted to do surgery because "the problem was resolved." I forced the issue and insisted on surgery. They removed approximately 4 inches of my ileum. I had coencentric bands and at one point the opening was approximately one fourth an inch. I had many more compromised areas, but the surgeon thought I could be managed medically. Less than 10 days later, I obstructed again. Same horrible pain and vomiting. I was taken back to surgery, and this time 24 inches of small intestine were removed. I had a fold with a 90 degree angle that was obstructed. It was such a blessing to be able to eat again. I have had a few problems since and there are a few foods I cannot eat, but after the severe pain I endured for over 2 years, this is a breeze. I don't absorb iron, so I have to have blood and iron transfusions approx every 3 months. I looked at this site because I was having bile green stools and was concerned. When I read your note, I was greatly concerned for you. Feel free to contact me.

Well for me no diahria..for my sister who is constipated she is now regular. It took 9mos of taking but I am normal now. I have passed this tip to others and they are thrilled at how this works. Some how the anti oxidents in the juice makes us all better. I hope this helps some of you as it has me. Sue

I am 21 yrs. old and when I was younger, I used to have a little trouble with constipation. Occasionally the poop would be so big it would tear the skin and there would be a little blood. During college I never had that problem.. I was regular. I suppose I have the school dietician and regular excercise to thank for that. Now that I am out of school, I have recently been passing poop so large I feel light-headed after I'm done.. last time this happened it was my first movement in 3 days, the poop was long and large in circumference, when I wiped there wasn't just a little blood, it was all blood.. even a few clots.. healthy people don't poop like this. My husband gets mad at me for clogging the toilet.. but it's the enormous size of my poop! Too big for the pipes. I will be drinking more water, eating more fiber and exercising more often and hopefully I'll be able to poop like a normal human being.

anonymous above,

Here's information about diarrhea that might help you. Please take note of the information about black stools and pain -- you should contact your health provider and get an appointment for a diagnosis and treatment plan.

I hope you feel better soon!

I've been reading over a lot of posts, and noticed some have said they have had blood in their stools. If you have any blood, you NEED so see a doctor. This is a very big warning sign for colon cancer!! My grandfather had colon cancer and he ignored the blood because he thought it was hemorrhoids. So PLEASE see your doctor if you notice any blood at all!

Hello. I am 16, and im currently in somewhat of a worry. I am currently suffering from states of light headedness and bleeding every time I have to poop, and im wondering if those two are related. I have moved recently and there has been a slight change in diet, but im wondering what that case might be.

I'm just curious what it might mean if it hurts to poop. Everytime I go I feel like it is tearing and I do bleed. It is usually a brighter red color. I thought it was the size of my stool at first, but they are not big at all. Is it a diet thing? Stress? Or something more serious? Any help would be awesome.

thanks.

I have been having weird movements from time to time but now it won't go away. I take pain meds(methadone 5x10mg and loratabs 3x10mg a day) and thought this was causing it so i lowered my intake and still it stays the same. I can only go every three days and when i do, it feels like it is ripping my o-ring out. It comes out hard dry big clumps that usually have blood on them. Sometimes i actually have to use my finger to pull them out since they will not come out right. I find it easier to squirt about 20mg of water up there before i go to help with the movement. This is very embarassing. I am a very healthy eater and prefer good home cooked meals over fast food. I don't eat sweets, i don't drink, i only take my pain meds cause if not i can not move thanks to my back injury. I have been taking the meds for over 2years and only recently in the past 5months has this started. Any help would be awesome.

My 11 year old son has always been extremely regular. For the past two weeks however, things have changed. He began having diarreah, and messing his pants at times, then it has now switched to hardened stool, not exactly constipation, however he is having terrible back pain at the time of trying to go to the bathroom. Any suggestions?

I guess I have a unique problem. Sometimes during intercourse, at the time of orgasm, (usually), I defecate. This has never happened to me before, and although I was able to conceal it on a couple of occasions, I don't think I was very successful the last time it happened. This is extremely embarrassing, it makes me afraid to orgasm. I don't want to pursue relationships because of it.

I've had a lifetime of hassles with not going, so I've looked into it a lot, and talked with many Dr.s. here's what I've learned:
1) Dark Green Poop can mean Blood in your stool, and you should see a DR. ASAP. Mine had me come in the same day, and sent me for the Colonoscopy ASAP. Not something to fool around with. (Stool will be hard to clean up, and nearly black, with a dark green tinge.) I know nothing about bright green stools, never had them.

2) As to children with messy pants, I had a problem with my son coming home from school with dirty pants after years of no accidents. When I looked into it, the School had taken the doors off the stalls, and he'd decided he'd rather sit in it, than go in public. Talk to the school, find another option for the poor kids - if that is their problem. (Also, check for iron in their vitamins, and stop feeding Bananas and Cheese, as all cause constipation.)

3) Fiber causes gas. Doesn't matter if you get it in food, or supplements - it causes gas. Go to the bathroom more often, if you can, because gas builds up when you hold it - and no one else wants to know about it.

4) Iron supplements cause constipation. Took me years of suffering to discover this. Iron is in Multivitamins, and in iron supplements, so if you take vitamins, read the label. Switch to vitamins without Iron, if you have a problem.

5) It's my understanding that "floaters" are the result of eating too much fat, so I would tend to think sinkers would be the preferred state of BM's.

6) Coffee can help you go. Hot liquids are good, but there's something in the coffee that actually works as a diuretic. Relax over a hot cup of coffee, with no outside pressure, and you will go easier.

7) Fiber pills work well for me, and I don't have to gag down the powdery gunk in my drink. I also use a "Stool Softener" every day, to help me go easier.

8) I don't let it go anymore. I used to go for weeks on end without going, and there would be massive bleeding and pain when I did go. Now I go every day, and if I miss a day, I take a laxative that night, or use a disposable Enema the next day. I no longer let it go for days on end, because I was straining so hard, I was bursting blood vessels in my face. (I looked like I had tiny freckles all over my face.)

9) If you bleed when you go, it could be Hemorrhoids. I've had them all my life, and it comes from straining too hard. This can also be a cause of messy pants, for those who are not meticulous in cleanup. I keep some wet wipes near the toilet, so I can clean up better, when needed. They can be found in the Baby aisle, and in the TP aisle. DON't use Cleaning supply wipes. Your bum won't like you. Use the ones with lotion, so you don't hurt your bum any more. Bleeding can also be from Polyps, or cancer in your colon, so go to the Dr, and find out which you have. NOT something to ignore.

OK hope that helps.

This is for the mom who said she has a daughter who has both diareah and constipation. I had the same problem as a child. I would go for a month without having a bowl movement and then I would go through a few weeks of having diareah non stop. There would be days that I could not stop it from coming out, which resulted in accidents. Its not that she doesn't have any sensations that tell her she has to go. It's just that she is not able to stop it. I was in and out of doctors offices and hospitals but nobody could seem to know what my problem was. I continued to have this problem until I was 14. I got very sick and was losing weight. My mother took me to the university hospital and demanded that someone tell us what the problem was. We were told that had we let the problem go for too much longer I would have died. If someone is not having a bowel movement for over a month could cause them to get toxic poison in their bodies. We found out that I had a bowel impactment that was causing all of this. It took over a week in the hospital and being pumped full of laxatives before I passed the softball shaped bowel movement. The doctors were amazed of how big it was and frankly so was I. After that I underwent a series of tests that were all negative. They could not find a cause to this. I was treated with laxatives the first year to make sure that another impactment did not arrive. I have been normal ever since. I recommend that you take her to a hospital for an x-ray of her tummy. This sounds just all too familiar. Good luck.

I am currently on methadone maitinence. As you know opioids block you up tremedously. I am alwways bloated tired and out of energy. I take depakote which put on 60 lbs. Also have IBS. Usually eat 2 big bowls of high fiber cereal. Sandwich at lunch. But do eat alot of cannoli and ice cream too. Usually I will go once a day (very firm stool). I'll get to a point where I'll be sick just from eating a small sandwhich. Very bloated, and sometimes nauseous at nite. This happened last week after a small lunch and desert at night. On sat. I ate taco bell. I felt hungry. I took my previcid. and went to sleep. (I sleep very weird 4pm till 8 pm). Up and down tired. Later when I got up my stomach hurt bad. All of a sudden I started throwing like I never had in my life. It was the scariest thing Ive ever been through. And I used to drink hard, Ive menigitis. Nothing topped this. I couldn't stop it. Nothing was coming up but bile. finally I mananed to sleep. Now as you can imagine Im scared to even eat. My doctor said it was the taco bell but I was feeling ill 2 days before. I went to the bathroom today but its like it doesnt matter. Now I started mixing in metamucil again w/ the fiber one. I've had problems before. Senna has never worked. Sorbitol irritates my stomach. And sometimes when I take the real strong lemon drink or a fleet I still will go only once. Please help me .....whats going on? If I did a cleanse would it get through the methadone? Now to eat toast and feel like I had Thanksgiving dinner! sincerely, bryan f., Pittsburgh,PA

For all of you with IBS, I thought I'd share this. I, too, was diagnosed with IBS at the age of eleven. I am now in my forties and never really experienced any relief. Until recently I read something about Celiac's Disease and decided to ask my doctor. Celiac's is an allergy to gluton (wheat, rye, barley, and malt). It's also found in LOTS of other things. I was tested and guess what? I don't have IBS after all, I have Celiac's Disease. I've changed my diet, and for the first time in YEARS I don't have DAILY stomach problems. So be careful of just accepting the IBS diagnosis. Lots of people are misdiagnosed.

They tried antibiotics, stool softners, fiber, diet change etc.......... to no avail. They think the blood is from fischers (no doubt from the hard stool) but have not found a cause or cure for changing the bowel movement. Help

Okay, here's my issue. I have a very irregular digestive system. Normally, I would go about once every three days. But ever since I've started eating Fiberone bars, I've been going regularly. But recently(well, this has been going on for a while) I go poop and it's bloody. And I mean, REALLY bloody. The water turns red and everything. My mom is going to make an appointment tomorrow, since I feel it is getting worse. But I thought I should consult this first before I do anything rash. I've considered that it might be that the lining is being torn, but it seems like there's to much blood for that. Do you think so? Please reply soon.

EASY HELP FOR CONSTIPATION and small hard round stools

At least this is what works for me, 95% of the time. I use a pure POWDERED form of MAGNESIUM CITRATE (450 mg) and mix a TEASPOON in a glass of juice (I find it most pleasant with grape juice but also use orange or other fruit, it really doesn't affect the results. Depending on your particular physiology, you may find you can use more or less. If it's too much your stools will become too loose, although I've never had diarrhea. Your body will let you know how much is the best amount. Within a few days or less you should see results. I tend to be constipated, so this is really a great solution for me, it's pure, and relatively inexpensive ($10.99 for an 8 ounce jar). Let me reiterate that I use ONLY the magnesium POWDER, not any pills. Let me also emphasize that I'm only telling you what works for me. It's up to you if you wish to try it or not. I've never had any side effects.

I have noticed green poop from my kids when they drink anything purple or blue. The dyes from that and in fruit snacks will cause the green. For constipation, I recently tried 1 quart of warm water with 2 teaspoons of (uniodized) sea salt. I added a squirt of lemon juice for taste. You should drink first thing in early A.M. before any food. Drink as much as you can very quickly. Results in 15-20 minutes without crampping. Stay close to bathroom. Good Luck! Young people age 13 or younger need to tell your parents of these problems. Please get help from them.

For the parent with the 11 year old daughter who has the compacted stages etc...obviously make sure she is getting enough fiber and drinking enough water. If this is something you've already been doing you may want to ask your doctor about something called sensory integration disorder. My cousin has it and she had the worst time potty training. She was compacted for months at a time..same thing she couldn't tell when she had to go.

Ask yourself if your daughter seems to have any other tendencies like touching things excessivly or excessive need of attention. Lacking social skills, poor eyesight, etc...these are other side effects of SID. I could be way off the mark but it might be worth checking out! It's a newer diagnosis so don't feel bad if you've never heard of it!

For the parent who has the daughter that has the issues with getting compacted...

I am sure you have tried to enforce hydration and fiber in your daughter's diet. If not try that first.

You may want to ask your doctor about something called Sensory Integration Disorder. My cousin has it and she is 5. She had a horrible time potty training, she could not tell when she had to poop and she would get compacted. I would encourage you to at least check out the Disorder and see if any other symptoms it has go along with your daughters tendencies. It is in the family of Autisim, but don't freak out, many children with SID are very functional!
Good luck!

I went throught that too, and it was horrible!!! they told me it was Hirschsprung's (HURSH-sprungz) disease... What helps is when she gets "cleaned" out to stay on a well balanced diet to keep it flowing regular... Dont feel like you have to marry fiber she can still spurlge but carefully. I still have some issues but I go regular more often than not. My husband calls them ANACONDAS! that we end up SNAKING later.

I think I must be the only person who has my problem after reading all these questions.

I have soft, mushy like stools, I 'go' every morning and sometimes 2 and 3 times....but the problem with soft mushy stools is it takes me about 20 to 30 minutes each time to go. I'm not constipated as I can 'go' and its starts out fine...but then everytime I think I'm done and I wipe it causes more to come out. I could buy stock in toliet tissue and be rich for what I have to use each day. And this also causes terrible and painful hemerroids as well...and then alot of leaking through the day until the hemorrioids shrink back. If I use a hemorroid product it seems to cause more bleeding? I've had several tests done but no answers? I just wish I knew how to make my stool more bulk and firm...anyone have any answers?

Once I flush and return to my normal tasks will I then realize that I need to use the bathroom. Can someone please help me?

I am on pain management for another condition, which leaves me very constipated. I am usually able to go once a day, but my poop is very large and causes some amount of strain to eliminate. The problem is, from this straining, I get the most severe headache. The headache feels like the back of my head might blow off. The pain and pressure is unbearable. Why am I getting these headaches?

I have a 6 year old son and my problem with him is that he does not like to go to the bathroom. He will pee yes but number 2 no, he holds it like 3 days at a time and when he does go man it is one big clump. Well today I see blood not in the stool but when i wiped his bottom. Now I am concerned, could this be that he was so constipated and that he sat on the toilet for about an hour that he may have torn something because it was hard and he said it hurt to come out. Please help me I am scared that it may be something serious.

To the mother with the 11 year old with constipation - there is a rare condition where the nerve endings in your bowels do not work properly and therefore don't tell a person when they have to "go". This is generally a condition that a person is born with and is caught in childhood, however, I was 30 before I went to a doctor who suggested this might be the problem. They can test to see if this is the issue through a colonoscopy. It may not be the problem, but is certainly worth a try!

In my experiance balck and or tar like stools usually mean blood. I would go to the dr to get it checked. Blood can mean nothing but it could also be life threatening.

My daughter is about 2 1/2 months old and she can go about 3 or 4 days without pooping. At first i thought it was constipation but when she goes it is runny and its a lot. And when she goes she screams and it seems like she is in pain when she finally does poop. She is bottle fed but i still dont think she should poop almost every 4 days. My mother put a vasaline thermomether in her butt but this has been going on for her whole life and i am conserned that it is going to damage her anal. What should i do?? i am very conserned for the health of my daughter

I was told to take iron and that has always caused constipation. If I eat fiber bars, cereal etc. they cause a terrible gas problem. I also get constipated from cheese, ice cream and any bread or rolls. The only thing that helps are stool softeners. I am wondering if taking them a few times a week would harm me in any way?

I have a 16 year old son and since he was born he has had a poop problem. His was also so big it plugged up the toilet. We did everything. He took Miralax for years. He also had the problem a lot of you are talking about big poop and as we thought diarrhea, but when visiting a gastrologist we learned differently. We were told that the poop that he went was not all of it. And that there was more and the liquid poop was the leaking out around it. So when he was little I would give him enenmas, when it got so bad his stomach would bloat. We continued with the Miralax until recently. I hurt my back and finally decided to go and see an chiropractor. In the midst of conversation with him, he mentioned helping kids with ADHD. So the next visit, I asked him about my son and his poop problem. My son also was very depressed and his personality changed drastically.
He said that he would take x-rays and see if he could help him. After the x-rays were read. He said that there was a 96% chance he could help him. When he showed us the x-rays, he was full of poop. He said that it was his vagus nerve and once his adjusted it, he would see a big different in his bowel movement. In less than 24 hours, he went to the bathroom at least 8 times. His personality went back to the happy-go-lucky kid, I remembered. I can't say enough about our chiropractor. But, I'm glad he likes talk a lot and dedicated to his profession. Hope
this helps in some way.

Since I could ever remember I have had large poops, and now that I am 18 I've had enough of this embarassment, I need help.
When I was younger I would hold it until at the most 3 days. But recently I thought of maybe the reason my poop was so large was because I held it so long, the reason was that I didn't go everday. So, for the past few month or so after christmas I had decided to try to everyday, and it worked beautifully, no big poops, not once, and I could flush it without asking my mom, like a little kid, to come and see if it was alright to flush. But ever since I got sick with the flu in february, I had stopped drinking Kool-aid which is mostly made of water and sugar, but I have now been drinking only soda, and I never really get any veggies, even though i am one of those abnormal kids who love veggies and fruits. But ever since I stopped drinking the kool aid, Ive been on and off with constipation, and now my poop is back to being so large, it's not hard unless I hold it, but it's been pretty soft, but I am so afraid to go that I usually don't go. But I was wondering if drinking the kool-aid again would fix my problem for good, because I dont think I could go on living like this, it's too embarassing. I had another personal problem that I just got over with recently, I don't want another one, I just want to be normal. Please help me!

This is for the parents with children having leakage in their underwear.

My son had the same problem for a long time. When he went to the bathroom they would be huge, and for the longest time we thought he was just a very stubborn kid who hated to eat everything because he would hardly eat his food. For the leakage we thought he just wasn't wiping.

One day I got called into the school because he had the problem happen at school. When we went to see his doctor she had know idea what was wrong either until she did x-rays and found that there was a blockage, and it was causing him to be backed up into his stomach. This is why he was leaking, not eating, etc. They put him on a powder medication that had to be mixed in his drink, and a horrible tasting liquid that he had to drink.

I am pretty sure if your dooks are green, it's nothing to worry too much about unless it is recurring. Every now and then isn't so bad, your body is probably de-toxing. Are you taking multi-vitamins? Because I just started taking a different multi-vitamin and two days in a row my dooks were jolly green giants.

For all those young kids and teens with major poop problems, I have gone thru this with my daughter years ago. She went to so many doctors and had so many tests, and meds that just made her leak. She even one time had to grab my leg to give and extra push. I swear it ws the size of a coffee cup.
Here was the result which wnet over looked by 5 docs.
Throyd problem. Have a blood test done for their PSH and T4. The throyd controls this problem. After taking throyd medicine she started being normal. If now after 10 years, if stress comes on or something major in your life changes, and the symtoms come up again, have your levels checked. They my be out of wack.
Hope this helps and solves your kids problems. I know what you are going thru. If you need more help email me at execfolder1@yahoo.com

As far as stomach noises and bubbling, I have found that taking stuff like beano and Gas-X helps a lot. I take both and they have helped me a lot. Also, watch your diet and drink a lot of water. Take note of what your body cannot tolerate, i.e. dairy products, fatty foods. Don't eat too late, eat smaller meals, eat slow. try to relax, anxiety makes it worse. I know this just treats the symptoms, i have yet to discover how to stop it for good. Hope it helps.

Just a little advice to everyone asking about green stool. Myself, my husband and my son have all been having bright green stools for several days now. I couldn't figure out why and was beginning to get a little worried. I searched through many sites including here for answers but the majority of people kept talking about food dye. The thing is..none of the 3 of us eat the same things! I finally pinpointed it to a box of cookies we had all been eating from with 4th of July sprinkles! How strange something so simple as a small amount of blue sprinkles could cause the drastic change in color!

If you are experiencing the same problem of green stools, think back to EVERYTHING you have injested down to the last "sprinkle" on top. Maybe keep a food diary. This is what I would also suggest to the worried father who says his son goes 6 times a day. If he has recently upped his fiber intake...maybe without even realizing it (check the food labels of new food introduced into the diet) his body may be trying to get used to the extra fiber...or he just eats too much fiber and his body is dumping the waste frequently to keep up. Sounds like he is very active and it is highly likely he is eating alot to keep up his active lifestyle. A food diary for a week or two might help pinpoint the exact problem. Also, have him bring the diary when he goes to speak to a physician..(which he should probably do to be sure.) Hope this helps and best wishes!

To Anonymous 3 posts above that says:> every month or every other month i will have this horrible pain in my lower part of my stomach.............

About 6 years ago I had a similar problem. The pain was a stabbing pain in my lower abdomen that was sometimes so bad it would bring me to the floor curled over in a ball. I finally ended up in the ER one day because the pain had become so unbearable. Turns out, it was acid reflux. I didnt believe the doc at first because I always understood acid reflux to be more of a heartburn not a stabbing pain. She put me on a regular dosing of Zantac at the time and the pain disappeared. Over the years it has returned plenty but MOST of the time the pain is more like I have acid indigestion. I have learned to control it for the most part with stress management and watching what I eat (tomato products will set it off) but I have not had the same debilitating pain since the problem was identified. I would suggest maybe speaking to your doc about this being a possibility of the source of your pain. Good Luck!

I would like to comment on the post from May 30, 2009 the person who took aspirin, then had black poop, and has heartburn. This sounds like what my father had a couple of years ago. It is called Barrettes Esophagus. The acid reflux erodes the esophagus above the stomach and causes bleeding. The blood can go through the digestive system and come out as black poop. Aspirin thins the blood, and if you have a leak like an ulcer or erosion of the esophagus the bleeding might get worse. My father had an episode where he vomited blood. That sent him to the hospital. He had surgery to remove a section of his esophagus. That is a surgery which is hard to recover from. His digestion was messed up for a long time. Have your doctor check your esophagus.

I have a three year old that will go poop in his underwear but just enough to leave a mark on it. Then we will have to wipe his bottom and get new clothes for him to wear. He will usually do this three to four times a day, everyday for about a week then he has a huge "blow out". He just tells us that he can't go in the toilet but now he won't even go in his underwear all the way. Is there anything at all that I can do? I have even tried changing his diet to more fruits and vegetables to help bring the urge on more. But, he is still at it. Help.

I AM A 27YR OLD FEMALE AND HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH CONSTIPATION FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS. I'M BI-POLAR AND HAVE BEEN ON VARIOUS MEDS DURING THE VARIOUS STRUGGLES WITH THIS TERRIBLE PROBLEM. I'M CURRENTLY ON 100MG SEROQUEL, 300 TOPAMAX, AND 3MG XANAX DAILY FOR MEDS. THIS IS SIMILAR TO WHAT I'VE BEEN ON FOR THE LENGHTH OF TIME THE SYMPTOMS BEGAN. IT COMES AND GOES. IT HAS RECENTLY GOTTEN BAD OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS FOR SOME REASON AND IF I GO 2 OR 3 DAYS BETWEEN A B.M. (SORRY FOR BEING CRUDE) I BLEED ENOUGH TO APPEAR AS IF I'M ON A MENSTRUAL CYCLE BUT AM NOT. I SEE TINY RED MUCUS LIKE SPOTS AND SOMETIMES EXPERIENCE HEMORRHOIDS WHEN NOT CONSTIPATED? THE PAIN IS COMPAIBLE TO CHILD BIRTH AND I GET TERRIBLE HEAD ACHES? ANY IDEAS? IS THIS NORMAL?

To the parents of the children with leakage. My brother had the same problme growing up and things got very bad for him before a doctor finally diagnosed him with endcompresis (sorry about the spelling). Basically he would get so backed up that the bile and digestive fluids would escape around the stoll. She put him on a very high fiber diet all the time to get him self cleaned out and then had to conintue to take the large amounts of fiber. Apprently this condition can be very dangeours as it can cause your colon to rupture. Good luck!! I hope no child has to endure what my brother had to endrue.

I am a 37 yr old healthy male, I have been "regular" for as long as I can remember, single daily bowel movement, always early morning. Stool has almost always been pretty solid, very clean. For the last couple of months, my schedule is still the same, but the stool is very soft (not diarrhea like), and very messy and I have no idea why. After searching WebMD, I am thinking that my diet may have improved (I have increased fiber intake), and therefore the stool has softened? From a sanitary standpoint, I sure do miss the cleaner movements. Should I be concerned or is my prognosis correct???

I am a 21 year old male. I use to get a diarrhea a good bit growing up and the last 5 months or so I was having it all the time like 4 or 5 times a week sometimes everyday for a week then it all of a sudden just stopped and for about 3 months I had perfect poop but now my poop is still good but when I'm done I wipe and it takes forever to get clean and then if I move around or do any physical activity I seem to leak and have to wipe again. I read somewhere that this can be caused by red meat, fatty food and dairy. I don't know what to believe though.I saw one poster say his brother got it because he was backed up and mucus and stuff would leak around the stool but I don't get backed up.I don't know what to think. Any advice would be good. Also, sometimes there would be mucus in my poop.
