KFC Famous Bowls
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

What will they think of next?

A little bird sent me an article on the next new thing at KFC (formerly known as Kentucky Fried Chicken). The article sent came complete with a color photo. This photo didn't seem to do this new dish justice because it rather turned my stomach (and not in a good way). But I kept reading in spite of my newfound nausea!

It's called KFC Famous Bowls and from the looks of it, it starts with a layer of mashed potatoes or rice, then sweet corn and bite sized pieces of popcorn chicken, all topped with a drizzle of gravy and a sprinkle of a three-cheese blend. The picture I saw went with the mashed potatoes for the base of the bowl. I guess after looking at the picture, I realized I would want to layer my own food thank you very much. And, I don't think the gravy drizzle helped it visually either. And while I might want some hot gravy on my mashed potatoes, I don't think I want it on my corn or chicken or cheese. Maybe that's just me.

This totals almost 700 calories, with 31 grams of fat and 9 grams of saturated fat, 2110 mg sodium and 27 grams of protein. The only good news is the mashed potatoes and corn add up to 6 grams of fiber. Clearly the popcorn chicken isn't doing the bowl any nutritional favors. Because believe it or not, KFC's gravy and mashed potatoes aren't big fat gram or calorie contributors. The total fat would be lower if they used roasted chicken or even the chicken strips chopped up, I suspect. Two chicken strips add up to 260 calories, 16 grams of fat and 4 grams of saturated fat.

But there you have it,in all its glory. The "new" thing at KFC. I think we would all be better off ordering something else, like the Honey BBQ Sandwich with 300 calories, 6 grams of fat, 1 gram of saturated fat, 920 mg sodium, and 22 grams protein.

Actually, gravy on fried chicken is delicious! But I suppose that goes against the whole premise for this blog.

This blog IS about delicious, more healthful food. Everybody has their own food preferences and you probably speak for many who like gravy on fried chicken. My point was that I would personally rather put my gravy on my own food, and that their new bowl was fairly loaded in fat grams.

I actually love KFC b/c it is something I grew up with as a kid. However, as an RD I know how much fat it contains.

Yet I still get cravings for it. So I'll eat it...but maybe only 3 times a year!

Anyone expecting a healthy meal from a KFC deserves the early death that is comming to them.

The meal can be ordered without gravy.

I am very guilty of liking the KFC Famous Bowl. Not that rice will add any more nutritional value than the mashed pototoes the bowl is offered with rice (sorry no brown rice, just starchy white). And as badly as I need to lose weight I can't get enough of this KFC Famous Bowl with the mashed potatoes and gravy. DE-LISH!

Thanks for the nutritional (or lack thereof) information. I knew the bowl had a lot of calories which is why it was my only meal yesterday. One thing is for certain, it doesn't have to be as big! I think it is the portion size that drives the calories and carbohydrate amounts WAY UP!!! If KFC offered a smaller (and thus less expensive) version of the Famous Bowl for those calorie/carb conscious that would work out cool, 'cause eating one meal a day isn't healthy at all!

At my KFC, you can get the bowl with Tender Roast chicken (i.e. not fried). Their website does not provide nutritional info for that combination, but I would imagine it may cut the fat content in half (give or take). I also discovered today that although the bowl is listed on their menu as $3.99, they charge you an extra $1.40 for the Tender Roast. This charge is not on the menu (yet), but you are charged nonetheless.

Thanks KFC for charging you more to be more healthy, but what would you expect. The sodium content is outrageous as well.

Gravy mixed with cheese...turns my stomach too. It's like a bucket of slop. But KFC's baked beans are tasty. Probably not too bad if they are eaten as a meal rather than a side. Anyone else remember the tiny little 4 oz. dishes they used to serve at KFC? Now they use at least an 8 oz bowl for every side dish. Portion distortion! No wonder most of America is starting to look like the Pillsbury Doughboy.

I mostly can't believe that you are suggesting that anything on the menu at KFC is actually healthy. This reads more like an ad for KFC than a healthy recommendation of a meal. For the health-unconscious, that pile of food is very appealing, and for the health-conscious, you actually suggested an alternative at KFC... if you want to actually be healthy, KFC is certainly not the way to go about it.

Really Anytime that you drive through or hear the phrase "fast food" it's really substitution for deep fried instant meals and early death. So no matter how many cals. or grams. of fat fast food isn't ever healthy

Uhhh hmmm. I've had several Famous Bowls in my infamous life, and let me tell you, they are very filling. I get mine without gravy, so I think the calories are around 600. This is not much more than a Big Mac, and let me tell you, Big Macs aren't very filling. You eat one... you want another. So, at least the Famous Bowl fully satisfies a person for hours. Those 600 - 700 calories go a long way.

I just got one of those today (first one) and in my opinion, it's insanely good! gfdayhaeujtj! But, then I went online to try and find some nutrition facts about it, since I'm trying to lose weight (so I cheated, sue me) and I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise, finding out that it's so high in fat and calories, lol. But hey...that's what you get for fast food, eh?
