Nutrition News - Another Reason to Eat Soy
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

I don't know about you but I'm of the age that I need to take a list to the grocery store. Because if I don't, I will inevitably forget something. It's the curse of the "forty-somethings" - well, that and needing reading glasses for the first time in my life. So I am personally very motivated to preserve what's left of my forty-something brain and memory.

A few years ago I wrote about what to eat to boost brainpower after menopause in my book, THE CHANGE OF LIFE DIET AND COOKBOOK. And there was already some research back then suggesting that eating fish omega-3s may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer's. And some animal studies and a few short-term human studies had already suggested that soy foods and isoflavones might improve several aspects of cognition and memory, particularly in postmenopausal women.

Well, according to a press release regarding the upcoming conference on "soy and health" in Germany, two more studies demonstrated a statistically significant effect of the consumption of soy isoflavones (the phytoestrogens in soy) on specific aspects of memory in postmenopausal women. In one study with 21 postmenopausal women, the soy isoflavones improved specific indices of verbal learning and memory after 4 weeks and frontal lobe functioning after 8 weeks. I don't know about you but keeping my frontal lobe functioning over the next few decades, is a top priority! Just another reason to eat soy.

[The studies were conducted by Prof. Louise Dye with the Human Appetite Research Unite, The Institute of Psychological Sciences at the University of Leeds.]

Eating more soy can be as easy as ordering your Starbucks latte with soy milk or deciding that the convenient frozen edamame (shelled or whole) is your new favorite afternoon snack. I also make a point of ordering a tofu and vegetable dish every time I go to a Chinese restaurant.

What are your favorite ways of working in a serving of soy?

~~Elaine

My favorite way is to blend 2 cups of frozen berries, 2 cups of soy milk, and as little sugar as I can get away with and still be happy, and pour it into my ice cream maker. My husband loves it too.

I drink soy milk on a regular basis. When I slack off I always know it because my hot flashes kick in full force.

If all this soy with the phytoestrogens is good for post menopausal women, how does it affect infant boys being fed soy formula, or teen boys going the vegan route?

I add shredded soy cheese (3 kinds sold in a bag) to one egg and/or egg substitute, with veggies or lean ham, great omelet. I put a 6 oz soy yogurt in a blender with ice and soy milk, some frozen berries and make a smoothie. I use soy yogurt instead of mayo for chicken/tuna salad, add a bit of mustard. Spread soy yogurt or melt soy cheese on toast. I put plain soy yogurt in lots of things where I want added moisture. Sprinkle soy cheese on grilled vegetables on final turn. There's a bunch of ways to use soy including marinated soy chunks and baking or grilling. Have fun!!

I used Revival soy powder for years, only to learn that their soy in not fremented, and it is the fermented soy that is good for you.
Please comment.

I just got spooked by several articles I read online about alleged health risks of using soy products, like milk, powder etc. I use soy milk regularly because my wife is lactose intolerant so how can I be sure that we are not just actively creating another, more serious health issue for us both?

I drink "Soy Milk". At least 2 to 4 cups a day. I'm 41. Beside's helping my memory, I'm also starting to think that it's helping my arthritis. Does anyone out there have the same opinion?

I agree I drink Soy Milk, the Silk brand, and I too agree that it helped heal my broken bones that I had.
Also I have more energy, plus my memory is better and I just turned 57
on May 8th. Trouble is I can not get my wife to drink it she says it tastes like chalk.
Boy is she missing something.

I know I'm not the only one to have a significant sensitivity to soy and soy products. I suffer from painful gastrointestinal reactions whenever I ingest any type of soy product, from tofu to soy milk. Yesterday, I went to a restaurant that has begun using soy oils to fry in. Unfortunately, I did not see the small sign touting this new "and healthier" method of frying. Needless to say, I was up all night with terrible intestinal cramping and spent the morning with diarrhea. I have no other food allergies. Please be aware children and adults can have serious and even life threatening allergic reactions to soy and soy products.

I just discovered, through trial and elimination of possible other causes, that I am also sensitive to soy products. I suffer from painful gastrointestinal reactions. I have this same sensitivity to Sorbitol. One has to read the labels very carefully to avoid these added products because there are variations other terms used. Modified seems to be the big problem causer for me. Perhaps it is what they are modified with that is the problem, but that's a hidden component in the ingredients.
