Taste Test Tuesday: Slow Churned Ice Cream
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Summer has officially ended for some families whose kids are back in school. Some of us have just one precious week left before the craziness of advanced algebra (did we even learn this stuff?) and getting two kids to two different schools kicks back into high gear. So, enjoy the last days of summer and check out this new slow-churned ice cream if you haven't already (from Dreyer's brand,or Edy's brand I believe on the East Coast).

The other night I was making a late night run to the grocery store to get a couple of urgent items and I yelled out, as I always do, "does anyone need something while I'm there?" My husband answered, as he almost never does, "Can you get us chocolate chocolate chip ice cream?" I didn't know what that whole "double chocolate" thing was about but I searched the Dreyer's Light selections for the most chocolatey and found this NEW flavor:

Double Fudge Brownie
1/2 cup =
120 calories
4 g fat
2 g saturated fat
0 g trans fat
20 mg cholesterol
50 mg sodium
18 g carbohydrate
13 g sugar
3 g protein

First 5 ingredients:
Skim milk, sugar, cream, corn syrup, fudge swirl

How did it taste?
Like a scoop of heaven. You would never know it was "light". Not that I taste the regular or rich ice creams that often. Everyone LOVED this new flavor. Ben & Jerry - be afraid, be very afraid.

I agree. The slow churned ice cream from Edys is very good and you would never guess it is light.

I love the Edy's it really does taste the same, we haven't bought the regular one in a year! My whole famliy loves it, and my kids can't tell the difference. Lots of flavors to choose from

I love it! My favorite is French Silk by Edy's. Also, Bryer's makes a great light flavor called Mocha Silk. It's as delicious as French Silk.

According to Nutrition Action they were able to accomplish this texture through bioengineering using genes from arctic fish which resist freezing. Somehow makes it sound less appealing.

Breyer's Vanilla Bean ice cream is still the standard that any others should be judged by. It has four ingredients (cream, milk, vanilla and sugar) and a fantastic texture. But lots of people like creamier, more heavily-flavored ice creams, so maybe it's just me.

I've always loved Edy's French Silk, even when they made the container smaller and charged the same price. Bummer!!!

I agree with anonymous who said Breyers Vanilla Bean is the standard by which others should be judged. I don't eat a lot of ice cream, but on the occasions I do, I want the real thing, real cream, real milk, real sugar and very real vanilla. I think at 2-3 bowls (or less) a month, my heart can stand it - and it certainly loves the taste.

If you have high cholesterol and potential heart issues, it is not always wise to eat cream, sugar, etc. I love the Edy's light as well as the Breyer's low carb ice creams. It satisfies my craving for my favorit dessert with getting all that additional fat and empty calories.

Soy ice cream is better. All the taste minus the pus.

Admittedly, the slow-churned ice cream is very good, but the premium full-fat ice cream still has the better overall finish and mouth-feel. In particular, I am referencing the Vanilla flavor. Maybe the double-chocolate and brownies compensate for the reduced fat.

Moderation, moderation, moderation.
Whether it is slow-churned, ice-milk, frozen yougurt or super- premium - to all things moderation.

Treat yourself kindly without over-indulging. Dreyers/Edys is an excellent brand and there are others too. Just make your calories count.

If you are looking for a great low fat ice cream, look no farther than Healthy Choice. It is as creamy and rich tasting as any of the regulars and I would never trade it for Bryers.

You are so right! The slow churned ice cream is delicious. I love the Mocha Almond Fudge and I am absolutely addicted to the Fudge Tracks! The grocery store had a buy one get two free sale on Edy's recently and I now have enough to last to winter! By the way, I am lucky in that I can eat a small portion and feel satisfied.

I agree, Breyer's Vanilla Bean is the standard, but it no longer has as much flavor as it did when it first came out years ago. Right now I think the best thing in the ice cream case is the Blue Bunny Vanilla Frozen Yougurt.Melts in your mouth into a liquid like old fashioned hand cranked ice cream, not a pile of foam.

The best light ice cream, by my tastes, is Healthy Choice--by far-- and, judging by the nutrition chart, it is much better for you than most other light ICs.

Good - yes, good for you - no! I cannot understand an RD recommending anything with high fructose corn syrup, which is very bad for us. Looking in the freezer section even "all natural" Breyers' has it! I suggest reading labels, going for the low fat, low sugar or Splenda varieties. Mike K

I really enjoy Breyers "Butter Pecan" and "French Silk". It tastes as good or better then the "High Priced" sugery ice creams.

My cats don't like milk but they lick the ice cream bowl clean.

I absolutely LOVE Edy's slow-churned ice cream. I don't eat "light" foods to skimp on calories, I just limit how often I eat sweets. But if I'm craving something sweet, why not go for a really great ice cream? If it tastes good (and the slow-churned Edy's tastes REALLY GOOD!)I eat it!

I have to agree with previous comments. Breyers vanilla bean wins hands down. It to me, has the homemade taste that I loved as a child when my mom used to crank away making the homemade vanilla ice cream. It is simple, with simple ingredients, nothing artificial! I too, find it interesting that someone would recommend the Edys slow churned with all of the corn syrup and everything else it has just because it is lower in fat.

all natural ice creams may have all natural ingredients in the ice cream. BUT the preservatives and additives are in the box and in the plastic wrap and leech into the ice cream. all natural? i dont think so.

Why does the good stuff have to have corn syrup in it!!! I'm allergic to corn!

Just curious... how do you know splenda never leaves the liver??? I'm not saying that I know it's safe, but I have not come across any studies showing build up of sucralose in the liver. Where did you here this?
