Taste Test Tuesday: Multi-Grain Flour Tortillas
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

No more whole-wheat tortillas that taste like cardboard. Some higher fiber tortillas taste better than others, that's for sure. The low carb ones are particularly bad tasting in my opinion. But there is a new multi-grain tortilla in town, Mission Multi-Grain Flour Tortillas, and me thinks they got it right this time!

And when they say "multi" grain, they mean it! The third ingredient is multi-grain flour and just look at all the grains represented.

The first five ingredients are:

* Whole-wheat flour
* Water
* Multi-grain flour (cracked wheat, wheat bran, rye flakes, wheat flour, barley flakes, triticale four, corn flour, oat flakes, barley flour and rice flour)
* Vegetable shortening (soybean oil and hydrogenated soybean oil)
* Brown sugar

Yes I know the fourth ingredient is vegetable shortening, which includes hydrogenated soybean oil. But there is still only 1 gram of saturated fat per 4 grams of total fat in each tortilla. It's a step in the right direction folks! And what can I say, they taste great and even my two teenagers seem to love them. We've been making skillet pizzas with them and sandwich wraps and quesadillas.

Each tortilla contains:

140 calories
5 grams protein
23 grams carbohydrate
4 grams fat
1 gram saturated fat
0 gram trans fat
1.5 gram polyunsaturated fat
1 gram monounsaturated fat
0 mg cholesterol
5 grams fiber
460 mg sodium
10% daily value for calcium too!

Homemade tortillas are easy and they taste great. I use whole wheat flour, olive oil, a little salt and water.

The nutritional data lists the multi grain tortillas as 330 calories each, not 140. That's quite a huge chunk of my calories for the day - without the fillings!

Cloudy you are mistaken.

There are 112 calories that come from protein and carbohydrate in the tortilla (with each gram of protein and carb being worth 4 calories) and 36 calories that comes from fat (with each gram of fat being worth 9 calories) adding up to 148 calories (the label lists 140 calories)...certainly NOT over 300 calories.

This is a good thing! An easy way to work a serving of whole grains into your diet.

The reason you may have seen some at 140 and some higher is because Mission makes 3 sizes of this tortilla - unfortunately not all sizes are always available in all stores. 1.) Fajita Size (6.5") = 110 calories, 2.) Soft Taco Size (8") = 140 calories and 3.) Wrap Size (10") = 210 calories.

My favorite is Mission Carb Balance Whole Wheat

I also wonder why so many bread products have so much sodium...it doesn't matter how "healthy" the item, the sodium content is always way too high.

I would definitely opt to buy tortillas out of a health food store. The very fact that the tortillas contain brown sugar, and hydrogenated oil, should be an automatic no no! VERY bad for you. You can get sprouted wheat tortillas, with various sprouted grains, yeast and salt...AND..they are very good! Ezekial makes them.

I agree with you. I've been buying these wraps for some time now and they're delicious!

i've been buying sprouted wheat tortillas for a few months now, I have made Wraps before but never sprouted, would like to do so. Have any suggestions how to get the sprouted wheat in a state to be able to kneed it into some flour to make wraps? Would a blender me my only option, our could i grind it some other way? I have sprouted wheat, dried, roasted and then milled it, wow quite the flavour to add to bread, however very strong food, I couldn't add very much, or everyone suffered from a bad case of Gas, LOL.

LaTortilla Factory makes a Whole Wheat low Carb Low Fat Tortilla (6") with 8 g fiber and 50 calories. It contains, in order, water, oat fiber, whole wheat flour with vital gluten, soy flour, expeller pressed canola oil. I plan to experiment to see if I can make a reasonable facsimile of this tortilla. If anyone has a recipe with similar ingredients, I'd love it.
