Grown Ups Can Order Kid Meals, Too
My secret is out. I often order kid meals at restaurants for myself, clearly I am not a "kid" since I'm in the "forty-something" group. But what can I say? This is the perfect amount of food for me! I appreciate that the kid meal comes with a small drink and usually a mini sized dessert too! I draw the line at the cute little toy surprise though (LOL). I usually offer to pay extra especially if the waiter or waitress looks at me funny.
One of the burger restaurants near my house started officially letting grown ups order the kid meals; they just tack on a couple of dollars. That seems fair to me. Especially when it comes to ordering burgers at a restaurant. I'm not a big meat eater and the smaller-sized burgers are just the ticket! Ordering the kid-size meal can help someone eat a healthy "comfortable" portion of food.
I think most of us would agree (and research backs me up) that the more food that is served to you and sitting in front of you on your plate, the more food you are likely to eat. So, don't be afraid to demand to be served smaller, more reasonable portion sizes in restaurants, by ordering the kid meals! The restaurant chains usually have a kid menu (Elephant Bar, Claim Jumper, Applebee's and Denny's - to name a few).
I'm one of those annoying guests who also ask for fresh fruit instead of French fries. Oh well, at least I'm a big tipper! How do you keep yourself from eating too much when you go out?

At the restaraunts that my family visits, the children's menu usually have the following: burgers with fries, pizza, hot dogs and maybe a specialty item like pasta or a burrito, depending on what type of restaraunt we are in. No veggies, no fruit.
I try to find a dish from the adult menu that includes lots of vegetables. I eat only half and take the rest home for leftovers.
This is really good advice. We do this all the time with my 2 year old. We learn which places to go. Most have veggie dishes also. But, we live in the SF Bay Area, which is very veggie and kid friendly. Kind of expensive though.
Why is it fair to charge an adult a couple more dollars for the same meal the kids get? It's the same thing! Why should I have to pay more for less food?
To last anonymous,
I'm not in the restaurant business but I'm guessing some restaurants probably price the kid meals a bit lower to draw in the adults that will order regular entrees. So when an adult is ordering the kid meal, it is pulling down their profit a bit. I just went to a French restaurant last weekend and noticed that the kid burgers were priced at 5 dollars including a side (fries or fruit), while the smaller adult burger was priced exactly double that. The burger was probably 1 1/2 the size of the kid burger.
Anyway, the kid meals are usually a pretty good deal with the intent of bringing in those higher profit ordering adults. That's my point.
Great discussion everyone!

I would like to order from a kids menu, but some restaraunts say for kids ONLY and I do not want to make a sean so I order from the adut menu and all the time leave half. I don't like taking it home and reheating it, it does not taste the same. I say restaraunts should give you a choise of smaller portions for adults, to much food is in the garbage what a waste. But I can only eat a small amount.
I say lets have a smaller meals than we can have room for deserts.

Fortunately (?) I am now in that senior bracket now and the meals are somewhat smaller and cheaper but I still sometimes take food home. For breakfast, I often order ala carte and that way, I only get what I can eat.
Its nice to know that kids meal has more health benefits than what we usually eat.Try Rice and Shine it is made perfect just right for you.
Kids portions are a good idea if the establishment will let you order them. Portions at most restaurants average about 75% more calories than the typical adult needs in one meal. Add to that a soft drink and an appetizer and you can easily consume your daily calorie needs in one sitting. And that's adults who aren't trying to lose weight. If you are trying to drop a few pounds, you need to do more than just cut your meal in half. Don't even order an appetizer, drink water, forget the cheese on salads and sandwiches, and stay away from anything fried or covered in gravy or cream-based sauce. And for goodness sake, slow down! Eating is not a race. Try taking a sip of water between bites. Best of all, if you know you will be going out to eat later, eat a small serving of lean protein or raw veggies before you go. You will be more in control and less likely to overeat if you aren't starving when they bring the basket of bread and butter to the table!
Well If the they want to charge less for the kids meal, with a smaller portion, I sure don't feel bad about ordering it. If it costs them too much money, maybe they should raise their kids meal price, I don't see their pricing structure as my problem. If they say Adults cant order, I tell them maybe my child will be in soon, and if they dont like it I will leave, and not buy ANY food from them.. its their choice.
