Hot Flash News: Flaxseed Works!
I wrote a book all about ground flaxseed a few years back (THE FLAX COOKBOOK). It was the absolute first book on the market on flaxseed (not flax oil). Many thought it was too early, that more research needed to be done.
More research always needs to be done - I felt there was enough evidence and strong scientific suggestions that people really needed to hear about and I wasn't going to wait any longer. After researching the topic and writing the book I truly felt (and still do) that ground flaxseed is one of the most powerful plant foods on the planet. Ground flax has several components it contributes and the components even seem to have some synergy (they work together for maximum health benefits) in our body.
Well...since I wrote the book, I've seen study after study come out adding more credibility to the suggestions and statements I made in the book. One preliminary study on menopausal women just came out reporting that 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed (twice each day) cut their hot flashes in half AND the intensity of the hot flashes dropped by 57% too. Any woman battling hot flashes will appreciate the intensity decreasing too, trust me!
And here's perhaps the most exciting part...the ladies noticed a difference after talking their daily flaxseed for a week. The maximum benefit was achieved within 2 weeks of taking the flaxseed.

Yes, but does this work for women who have had surgical hysterectomies and do not have ovaries? So many products I have tried (black cohosh, Dong Quai, bioflavanoids, evening primrose, and St. John's Wort) that have not worked for me, and I am told they only work if you have any part of your ovaries left. I have tried Premarin and it did work but my sister and mother both died of breast cancer so I no longer do HRT. I have tried Evista and it did not work either. They have also had me try Zoloft and Effexor, all without even a modicum of success. My hot flashes are wicked things that leave me totally drenched. Will this work if I do not have ovaries?
Response to anonymous: Have you tried Estroven? This is a supplement, not an estrogen. It can be purchased at Walmart, Meijer's, etc. I had a terrible time with waking up in the middle of the night and couldn't get back to sleep as well as hotflashes. When I began taking Estroven, from the first day, I slept thru the night. The hotflashes got a little better, but sleeping thru the night was awesome!

I too suffered horribly with hot flashes after having my ovaries surgically removed but would not and never will take any HRT. None of the over the counter remedies worked for me but I did find that sleeping naked helped. As soon as a hot flash starts to wake me up I throw the covers off me and because I'm naked I cool down much quicker. I also have a drink beside the bed so I throw off the covers, take a drink and quite quickly I cool down, pull the covers back on and go to sleep. I know this doesn't sound like it will help but the intensity of the flashes will go down and you do tend to get used to them. Good luck!
I got chemo induced menopause...still having hot flashes six years later...can't take any hormones because of positive receptors... is flaxseed safe for me?
Please, please beware ladies. Flaxseed can be estrogenic, just like soy. Women with breast cancer should wait until further studies are available, especially if you have estrogen positive bc. And to that end, so should other women. Remember what we learned with estrogen replacement? Estroven is the same thing... it acts like estrogen.
I believe my cancer proliferated because of my high consumption of soy... in all forms. I hear this all the time from fellow survivors. Be careful. Unfortunately I live with hot flashes.
I have been using flaxseed for over a month, consistently, and haven't noticed any change in my hot flashes. I also use soy powder daily in a breakfast shake and do not notice any decrease.
I don't know exactly what a hot flash is. I wake up sweating from below my waist to my knees at the back only, everything else seems ok. I don't feel hot when it happens just having sweated during the last part of my night. never happened before but for the past year has been a problem. Have been taking flaxseed for quite some time and do not see the difference yet, not that I was taking it for sweating, (just read this) but for general health reasons.
I have had HOT flashes for 4 years now due to surgical induced menopause. I have tried everything!! Nothing works for me/ I think it is something we just all have to live with. I give up on all these remedies they say to try none have worked for me!!
I have only just started hearing about Flaxseed and am now adding it to my daily diet. I make 4 servings of oatmeal for a week's worth of breakfast, and add 2 heaping tsp of Flaxseed to the water along with 2 tsp of sunflower seeds, before adding the oatmeal. I have noticed a definite increase of "trips to the bathroom" since doing this, and was told it was the effect of the flaxseed. Is this correct? How much IS a daily dose? How much is needed to have an effect on hot flashes, and if I make an increase will I be in the loo all day?
I hope someone can answer these questions.
Thank you
Sooo, I am having a prophylactic oophorectomy in 1 week. I was worried about being an emotional mess! I didn't know hot flashes were something to really fear.
I will be taking HRT because I also had a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy. Do the hormones help hot flashes?
I'm 36 and don't really know many who have gone through menopause or surgical menopause that are willing to speak about it.
Any info you can share is greatly appreciated!!!!
Has anyone tried yoga? There are several postures that can help balance your hormonal systems if done regularly and consistently. I'm not saying it will work, but it's worth a try since nothing else seems to be helping???
I,too, suffered from hot flashes. Though I am now on hrt low dose patch, which works for me, when I was suffering from the hot flashes at night, I kept an ice pack wapped in a small towel beside my bed. I would take the pack when a hf would hit and hold it against my face, stomach - wherever the hf affected me. and low and behold it did help! also, New Phase, a product found in drug stores, walmart etc. worked too. a bit cheaper than estroven - which works too.
hope this helps someone.
I think everyone is so different. I am 56 and had my ovaries and tubes, remove because of an infection I got during a c-section delivery25 years ago.I am glad I am alive. I have been on premarin and provera for 25 years. I just went off and I have hot flashes and wake up alot in the night over heated kick off cover cool down and cover up till the next time. I guess we need to be happy to be at least able to function. I am so glad to be off of HRT.
have a good one, God bless
About 8 years ago I started having hot flashes and the feeling to bite someone's head off along with them. I suffered thru them not wanting to take anything. Finally they went away! But!! they are now back at age 57! I hate that feeling of blowing up and ready to kill, I work with alot of males with most of them being young so they do not understand. I have been trying to control my breathing and it seems to be helping, does anyone have anything to help without taking something that I fear might end up killing me?pfsbd
Calcium seems to help mine. I increased the amount of Calcium I had in my diet or take a pill at times if I haven't been eating dairy products, and it seemed to help. Estrovin and the Calcium suppliment together really worked well but it took awhile.
I have suffered from hot flashes even before I had a total hysterectomy 7 years ago at age 49. Tried patches, pills, herbals nothing has helped. The water pours off of my face and neck and it is very embarrassing. I am on celexa, black kohash and now will try the Effexor with .045 Premarin. Something has got to work, this is a disaster. Who ever said the golden years are wonderful???
back in 1996 i had a total
hysterectomy with the ovaries
being removed.
of course, the hot flashes
started. i suffered for a very
long time. several yrs ago i
wanted to get off estrogen so
i went to a class at a compound
pharmacy. i paid out of pocket
to have a salvia test. it showed i had too much estrogen in my body. i am now on a prescription cream with progesterin
only. as long as i stay on it i no longer have hot flashes. i'm
now 60 yrs old. so you can see how long i suffered.
so if you can find a compound pharmacy check it out. my bc/bs
pays most of it.
is there certain foods that can bring about hot flashes more? cause I find when I eat sweets I find the hot flashes come more.
Extra strength Estroven is the only supplement that helped me and I could feel the improvement within the first few days....when I start to get a hot flash it only lasts a few seconds and then goes away quickly. I don't envy anyone who has horrible hot flashes, my cousin had to change her sheets when she was going through this because she was drenched....God Bless us women!
i get depoprevera shots every 4 months after 2 weeks the hot flashes are gone
I have been taking Estroven for a month, and am sleeping better - but I have a hard HEADACHE all day long, and have had it for weeks since I started the suppliment. Could be unrelated. Anyone else have this?
I have been having night sweats and hot flashes since infancy and now I am 30. I have seen almost every doctor imaginable and no one can tell me what is wrong. Obviously this is not related to menopause for me and I can only hope that it will - gulp - help?! But that could mean another 30 years. The only thing that I have found to "help" is taking birth control pills continously and skipping my period all together. I do worry as to what that will do to me long term, but nothing else helps. My dream is to one day sleep through an entire night and not have to change my clothes during the day. Of course, I do have other problems, but this crap only makes them worse. I am constantly dehydrated and even pass out from it, which means I have to drink more water and by drinking more water I have more sweats...even the whole "salt theory" to retain water is bs! I just get bloated and then have really bad ones. What a visious cycle! Unlike many of you I can't WAIT for menopause. That makes me want to cry...
Good luck to everyone...I'm going to go drink some more water now...lol!
I'm 24 years old and had night sweats so badly last night that I had to change my pajamas 3 times. I'm on the pill...I don't know what else to do!
I had a hysterectomy 7 yrs. ago. I still have one ovary. I was on hrt. for about 4 yrs. I've been off of them for about 3 yrs. Just recently I have been having hot flashes. I wonder if it has to do with still having an ovary.
I had a totalHysterectomy in April of 07. The hot falshes are HORRIBLE!! I have tried everything, and nothing works. Black Coharsh,Vit E,promensil,Phyto-Estrogen Formula,Estro Max,Soy extract,Evening Primrose,PeriMenopause,Lydia Pinkham herbals, and I am still suffering. I even took Enjuvia (HRT) and still nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions. The bed is wet constantly, I take 3-4 showers a night, keep something cool to drink by the bed and still nothing. This is horrible. Looking for help.
I had a partial hysterectomy (still have ovaries and tubes) when I was 36. I'm now 55. I began having hot flashes about 7 years ago but my biggest problem was very short temper and even the smallest things seemed to make me angry or upset and sometimes I would cry over nothing. I began taking Estroven (extra strength) about 3 years ago and I haven't had any problems since. If I skip more than 2 days I can definitely tell the difference. Apparently so can my husband who said if I'm ever running low he'll be glad to go to the store for me. He wasn't being mean...it just makes a huge difference in my temperament. Maybe it will help some of you. Almost all of the women I've talked to who take it say it really works for them.
My hotflash is increasing now I will be 52 in June, over 5 years have had Hystorectomy, my hot flash affects me only in my face, i constantly have to have the fan on especially at work every one says its cold its hot but only my face, my cousin said I should try Estroven, I am gonna try and see if that helps, I know I have used flaxseed oil for health reason on my own I this hot flash wasnt so bad so I am going to purchase a bottle this weekend and see if it will help. I think all this is what expected at our age after 47 look out for anything pain in the leg body changes all over.
I am 45 and had my uterus removed when I was 34.About two years after that I started to get hotflashes and have tried almost everything that is available by presciption and OTC.Nothing seems to work for me.One thing that is strange is that I get my hotflashes during the day and never at night.I would love it if that was the time I would get them so I wouldn't be so embarressed going out and standing in the middle of the store with a head that looks like I just got out of the shower.Any suggestion as to what I could do short of hybernating in my house?Thank you very much for listening.
I just turned 51 and I've been going through menopause now for 4 years.. :( My hot flashes and night sweats are so bad that I am now on the highest dose of Premarin a Doctor can prescribe but I take them 3 times a day! They do help but not enough. Premarin is the only thing that even touches my hot flashes at all but my Grandmother had breast cancer so that scares me a bit. I am EXTREMELY IRRITABLE and don't know what to do. I have 3 small grandkids and they drive me crazy as do all kids now and I know it's the menopause. My electric bill, I kid you not is between $400 to $600 per month in the summer time (LIKE NOW)and even in the winter (In the desert)I still use it ALOT. My daughter, grandkids and friends freeze and they have to wrap up in blankets to stay warm while I'm still sweating. My happy place is Between 30 to 40 degree weather wearing a muscle shirt. I NEED HELP DESPERETLY! Does ANYONE have any suggestions other than moving to Alaska?
Hello, I am just 49 years old with two kids 32 and 18. I just started menopaulse. I am Scared. I have hot flashes all the time, Day and night. I don't know what to do. I can't take the Estroven because I am a smoker. The DR. put me on Effexor. It made things worst for me. So I quit them. After reading all of these comments, I wonder is there any help from natual plants out there or are we all alone to deal with this new life we all hate. someone help me please. How long will this last? I feel it may get worst and I somehow, I want to get control of my body again. Help me..... What can I take to protect my Bones Body, Hotflashes and Life
I'm 44 and had a total hyterectomy (uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes)in March 2008. In addition, I had 3 of 7 liver hyperplasia and adenomas removed at the same time. Doctors suspect the liver tumors may be estrogen-related due to 20+ yrs of birth control usage. Needless to say, my doctors do not want me taking any form of estrogen or HRT. As a menopause new-bee I am suffering from a steady stream of hot flashes, night sweats, and sleeplessness. I tried Effexor one night and suffered with body tremors on the left side of my body the entire night and felt faint the next morning. I must say, however, my hot flashes and night sweats were less frequent and less intense for 2 days following my experience (it was wonderful, but not worth the body tremors). My GYN then prescribed Gabapentin. After the affect Effexor had on me I'm afraid to take this medicine. Has anyone had experience with Gabapentin?
Meanwhile, between 9 PM - 5:30 AM I get about 3 hours of steady sleep (after that I wake up every hour, sweat, dring water, go to the bathroom, fall asleep, wake up...) So to sleep through the night, I ocassionally take 1 Advil PM, which helps me rest longer through the night sweats.
I had a partial hysterectomy at 39 and 7 yrs later menopause hit me like a truck. My Gyn prescribed an oral hrt but i saw an ad for the patch(estraderm)and opted for it instead. This has worked VERY well for me. I am now 63 and have gone from 2 patches a week to 1. This year my Gyn (a new one) took me of the hrt and gave me Evista. The hf and night sweats came flooding back with a vengence. After 're-awaking' 3-4 times a night, and sweating profusely, I asked, no begged, for some type of relief. The Dr. reccomended Estroven today. I will get it tomorrow, so i can't comment on it's effectiveness. Let me add, I saw my Gyn and had mammograms regularly along with bone density tests. Thank God I am healthy!! To all you sufferers out there, WHY ARE YOU TORTURING YOURSELF??? GET AN HRT, MONITOR YOU HEALTH AND SWEET DREAMS!
I have had hot flashes for 10 years. Eight years ago I got breast cancer. I had the tumor removed along with 21 nodes. Had 6 weeks of radiation & went on tamoxifen for 5 years. Because of the tamoxifen I had to have a complete hysterectomy. The flashes got unbarable & got night sweats too. The only thing that worked for me was megace 20mg during the day & 150mgs of effexor at night. They worked like a charm. After the tamoxifen I got off the meds & the hot flashes & night sweats have returned. The effexor is very hard to come off of & that with megace put about 35# on me. I would love to find something that would work but you have to be very careful because alot of the stuff out there feeds cancer. I'd rather be healthy with flashes & sweats that take a risk of getting cancer again. It is very hard to live with. They are so intense I actually feel sick.
I had a hystorectomy in my 30's and used a low-dose HRT patch (vivelle) for years. My doctor finally told me at 53 I needed to go off them. OMG! I am so cranky I can't stand myself. I can handle the hot flashes and waking up in the middle of the night. But I am a total B*#%H! I have tried every herb and OTC item out there. Any ides on what to do to get rid of this cranky-ness???
I am a 26 year old and had a complete hysterectomy 2 years ago this month. I was using the vivelle patch, but was told by my doctor that as a smoker I needed to stop using it due to high risk of a stroke and blood clots. I have noticed the INTENSE hot flashes and moodiness and I wish there was help! My doctor prescribed a mild nerve pill, but I only use it to sleep because I don't want to be tired throughout the day as I am a full time employee and single mother of a 5 year old boy which is like having 2 jobs! I wish someone would have an answer, but after reading what everyone has written I fear there is NO HELP!
To the person who has a headache everyday: I get bad headaches from soy. I think that Estroven has soy in it. you might want to check on that.
