Taste Test Tuesday: Subway On The Road

Road Trip!

It's that time of year when you find yourself on the road traveling to and through unfamiliar places more than usual. Which means you also end up eating out along the way too (sometimes in places you wouldn't normally go to).

Granted, I can't get as adventurous as other because of my IBS - I avoid places I'm not sure about sanitation wise.

Well, recently while the Magee family was on a road trip, I found myself in a shopping mall food court having to choose a lunch to go in a jiffy. My options were Hot Dog On A Stick, Panda Express, Sabarro, and Subway. After a quick walk by, I settled on the turkey breast sandwich at Subway on honey oat bread (the highest fiber bread they offer), with lettuce, onion, tomato, mustard (only adds 5 calories), NO MAYO, and added avocado.

Let me just tell you, that sandwich hit the veritable "spot" that particular day. Here's what I think the nutrition information added to for that sandwich:

The 6" Turkey Breast Sub with all of the above (not including the avocado) = 285 calories, 18 grams protein, 4.5 grams fat, 1.5 grams saturated fat, 20 mg cholesterol, 1,000 mg sodium, 5 grams fiber.

The added avocado (which I'm guessing was 1/4 of a whole avocado) adds: 81 calories, 1 gram protein, 4 grams carbohydrate, 7.7 grams fat (most of which is smart fat), 4.8 grams monounsaturated fat, 1 gram polyunsaturated fat, and 2 grams more fiber!

Try it sometime - you might like it!

I like the subway meal without the meat. extra avacado, maybe a slice of cheese. Excellent.

I've found mustard to be a brilliant thing. I can't do a "dry" sandwich, but I can live without mayo. Thanks for the tip on the honey oat bread-- I wasn't sure about it. It's perfect for my high fiber goal!

The Subway six inch veggie sandwich with or without cheese is a great guiltless meal. I usually have them for lunch three or four times per week

The idea of the good-for-you lunch is great, and I generally like Subway sandwiches. However, I'm not fond of any chain's standard-issue turkey meat; there's too much salt in them and the flesh is too processed to get that nice deli round shape.

I really only like hand-roasted turkey breasts with little or no salt or broth added, which produces narrow (only 1-2" wide) slices, but has real turkey meat texture and just enough salt for flavor. No chain restaurant sells it. I buy mine from several higher-end grocery chains that roasts their own turkey breasts for the deli.

But back to Subway...I get subs with almost everything on 'em because of the great veggie crunch with the meat.

1000 mg is a HUGE amount of sodium in
one small sandwich. Watch that blood pressure climb....

I lost 102lbs in 2 years, doing Tae Bo 3-4 times per week, and eating Subway Tuna Monday-Friday, w/o the bread. I'd eat it w/ crackers sometimes, or just with a fork.... adding only black pepper, onions, and sometimes bell peppers. I love Subway, but I'd rather not eat the bread, it's just a little too much for me. If you take that 6" bread only, and ball it up, just look at all that bread!!

I was always choosing the wrap because I felt that it was less carbs..but in comparing the two carb counts found that the wrap had 10 more carbs! Its a healthy choice when you are on the run.

I have SEEN the way the Subway "tuna" is made. Take one large can of tuna and add about 2-3 POUNDS of mayonnaise! (I'm NOT joking!!!) It came in a large BAG! Look up the stats---it is the HIGHEST of all the sandwiches in FAT!!!

I don't understand why someone who is educated about nutrition can tells us this food is healthy. The meat is highly processed and contains large amounts of added sodium, harmful nitrites and other chemicals and artificial preservatives as well as "taste/texture enhancers." And has anyone asked how (if) the veggies are cleaned of the high pesticide levels, etc? I'm truly concerned about the people who are eating this type of fast food every day, thinking they are eating well, because the media and dieticians mislead them. Granted, it IS probably better than some other fast food choices, but that doesn't mean it is good for our bodies!
