For The Love of Coffee
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Who here doesn't love fun coffee drinks? Okay maybe there's a few. But the lion's share of Americans enjoy a good cup of coffee (fancy or otherwise) every now and then.

Well, over the last couple of years I've blogged periodically about all things coffee. I personally enjoy coffee but I know I'm not alone. I'm always looking for tips to give people about better food and beverage options in the places they tend to go. I've been able to post some lighter options at Starbucks over the past couple of years. Why? Because they provide nutritional information on their website. Well, that and there seems to be a Starbucks on almost every corner in big cities across America.

Many of the tips will translate to other coffee chains too, so don't stop reading just because you go to other coffee chains or cafes.

I love coffee and I just can't stop myself. But knowing what choices are better for me than others really help!

For all of those reading this, I was at Starbucks last night (yes, I am a college student-coffee addict) and they now have an option called a Skinny Latte that comes in Mocha, Vanilla, Hazelnut and about 3 other flavors and the reason its called skinny is because it's used with nonfat milk, nonfat whipped cream and all sugar free/nonfat add-ons that usually add up the calories in regular coffee beverages. Nope, there is no catch. THey all are 90 calories OR LESS. Being a health freak, I could not believe my eyes, it does taste a little deprived of the great-tasting fatty add-ons, but it is still very scrumptuous to the taste buds and worth the $3.00 for a tall.

Being a Starbucks barista, i consume mass amounts of coffee. Yes, the skinny latte is great. There are 6 current sugar free syrups, being carmel, vanilla, hazelnut, mocha, cinnamon dolce, and for limited time, gingerbread. They come nonfat and no whip. You can mix and match as i recommend. Vanilla and hazelnut make " french vanilla." carmel and mocha are great together. And if you don't dig the sugarfree syrups, as i really don't, get the syrup with a little sugar in it and still go nonfat and no whip. And if you are doing the low carb diet, i recommend "breve" (half and half) instead of going nonfat. Also, a great way lose some of the calories is to get a regular coffee, hot or iced, ask for your choice of syrup, and add the milk of your liking. It contains less milk, where most of the fat comes in. It's also a lot cheaper. A tall coffee is $1.75 versus a plain latte is almost $3. The syrup costs extra either way, and you can add your own milk! Also i recommend iced cafe con leches (iced coffee with milk) over a frappucino. Again, add the flavor of your choice. Big calorie and fat difference, even with the light option. And again, it's cheaper!

I love coffee and am a slave to it. I was sick recently and couldn't drink caffeine. I thought I would die! I had a headache over my right eye, similar to a ice headache and it lasted 5 days though 2 days after my illness, I returned to faithful joe (Starbucks' French Roast). I wake up with this headache every day, still. At any rate, Arabian Moca Sunani is AWESOME in the morning - brew it from home and you pay less, add your own "stuff" and take your time getting dressed. It's a wonderful thing! Enjoy!

I love coffee, but recently have heard mixed reviews. I have a friend who is always nervous and his hands shake all the time. He is always drinking coffee. Is there scientific evidence that coffee can cause this condition?

I also know someone who is on depression medication. He told me that coffee interact with the depresion medication.
Now I am concern, I only drink coffee in the morning with an empty stomach, and usually do not have breadfast. I can tell I get nervous after drinking a couple of very light, diluted cups of coffee.

Is there truth to any of this?

I feel coffee was the main culprit for my husbands heart attack at 48 years of age. Also being a type A, workaholic. He rewarded himself after completing a grueling job at Camp Pendleton, and a way bad inspector. It was Jan.83 and he had tickets to see the game at the Coliseum. Had a 1 !/2 hr drive to Pomona with a thermos of coffee. 9:pm Checked in at the Holiday Inn had the worst dinner ever,he had coffee. 11:pm Pomona Hospital.2008 still alive,diabetic,3stinttes,open heart surgery, broken ribs while roping steers, back surgery. Takes one small pill for diabetes,1 80mg aspirin, aleve because he is 72, and still a type A! His Mom is 95 still smokes. We heard the inspector at Camp Pendleton had a heart attack and died.

Mention should be made about a new study circulating recently on the Web (BBC and others) warning pregnant women from using coffee, even in moderation

Coffee is the answer to those busy-work chores, late night socials where sobriety is called for and serious watch-standing duty. I wonder why the coca leaf never achieved such commercial respectability.

I LOVE coffee! My body will not function without it. I have to have a cup in the morning to begin my day. If not, I can be the grouchiest person alive, I get headaches & believe me, it is not a pretty site. I still have several cups of coffee throughout the day. I drink all kinds of coffees; American, Puerto Rican, Cuban expresso, with or without flavored creamer. I enjoy going to coffee shops; Starbucks, Port City Java, The Liquid Highway, Brick House Coffee shop. Mocha coffee is my favorite. For all you Non coffee drinkers, you are really missing out on something good.
