Acai Berry - Just Another Nutritious Fruit?
You'll probably lose more money than weight...
Acai berries...perhaps you've heard of them? Remember the hype from pomegranates a couple of years ago? Well, the torch appears to have been passed to the Brazilian berry and the hype has been cranked up a few notches. The Center For Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) blew the whistle last week on web-based acai scams, which they say are fooling consumers with fake blogs, fake endorsements, and fishy science.
According to CSPI there is no evidence whatsoever to suggest that acai pills will help shed pounds, flatten tummies, cleanse colons, enhance sexual desire, etc. People appear to be getting scammed here two ways. There's the lack of science behind these Internet health claims and then there's the credit card scam-many consumers have had trouble stopping recurrent charges on their credit cards when they cancel their "free" trials. CSPI is reporting that even web sites purporting to warn people about acai-related scams are themselves perpetrating scams, some of which appear to be linked to overseas banks. So be careful out there people, you are probably more likely to lose your money rather than your extra weight.
Let's get back to the berry: What do we really know about it nutritionally?
Acai juice does contribute antioxidants but less so than Concord grape juice, blueberry juice and black cherry juice, according to a recent analysis* that used 4 different antioxidant potency tests. It contains more antioxidants, however, than cranberry, orange and apple juices.
Beyond that, we don't really know much more than this. I was trying to find an impartial source for the information on its nutrition content. My computer software program didn't have anything on it and the USDA database only had some information on the V8 Fusion blend that contains acai berry.
Until more is known and the hype (and price) go down on acai berry juices and food products, you can always pick up a bottle of 100% concord grape juice for a couple of bucks (just saying)... Each 8 ounce serving contains 170 calories, 42 grams carbohydrate, 250 mg potassium, 20% daily value for vitamin C and copious antioxidant-acting polypenols that have been linked to all sorts of good things for your body.

My sister-in-law and I tried acai berry pills for a month. We didn't lose any weight. Neither did we notice a difference in our energy level. I'm 56 and she's 60 years old.
I appreciate the info on the Acai Berry, as it's being touted everywhere. I was about to buy it from a vitamin supplier as I always look for ways to lose weight, and now I won't.
Jessica
I too was sucked nto the internet scam on Acai Berry. It was not until I emailed them repeatedly threatening to turn them into the American Generals office and the Federal Trade Commissions that they finally reversed the charges on my credit card and cancelled my membership.
My husband ordered Acai Berry pills online not too long ago without my knowledge-he didn't read the "small print" and next thing we know he was being locked in for $40/month for more pills-so much for the $3.95 free trial. I researched the net and found tons of complaints-couldn't cancel orders, company wouldn't return calls, wouldn't take back product etc. I IMMEDIATELY contacted his credit card company and closed the account, leaving this Scam Company without any recourse to get more money! They've since emailed us letting us know they've tried to bill him, but are getting turned down and want another credit card-NOT HARDLY! This is my suggestion to ANYONE that has or is thinking about ordering - DON'T! And if you have, cancel your credit card so they can't bill you automatically!
I too fell for the hype and advertised promises about weight loss etc. and ordered the free trial for $ 3.95. I stuck to the programme and was charged in excess of $ 85 per month (a total ripoff in my opinion) and have not lost a pound using this product nor have I noticed any difference in any area of my health. I feel cheated and angry because I've paid this large amount 5 times and have been on the product for almost 6 months without results. I canceled my order and just hope that I don't get charged anymore. Please people don't fall for these wild unsubstantiated claims. Research first. Thanks for a great article!
I ordered a "free" bottle of Acai Berry's and a month later was being charged $95! They wouldn't credit my account back until I sent the other bottles back, but there was no return address on the packages they sent me. And I saw no signs of anything with taking these. It's just a bunch of bull! I finally had to cancel my credit card and order a new one so they would stop taking $$ out. That was the ONLY way I could stop it. And talking to anyone didn't help one bit! DO NOT TRY THESE! THEY ARE NOT WORTH IT!!!
I willfully tried the Acai berries and it was total hype for no reason. The berries didn't help at all. Now, I go running and jogging and I stay away from most meats except for turkey, chicken and fish. I've lost over 5 pounds so far and it's been two weeks. People just need to find what works for them

I didn't read the fine print either and spent 40 minutes on the phone trying to cancel the contract. It was extremely frustrating as the gentleman helping me would keep offering me another deal. I had to threaten with calling the Better Business Bureau before he would cancel everything like I was asking him to do.......The stress from this phone call was rated high and definately not good for my health..The berry pills haven't helped with weight loss and I'd rather eat blueberries..........
What I want to know is why are people like Oprah Winfrey and Rachel Ray standing behind this? They claim to have lost weight with this product unless there is something they know that we don't. Oprah has had that Dr. Oz on her show multiple times claiming this stuff works. I wonder if they know about these scams and should they comment about the product and all the scams that are going on since half of America watches their shows. Plus their picture is posted all over the internet claiming this stuff is for real. Somebody from their staff should really look into this because alot of people trust that Oprah and Rachel are doing the right thing.
I was forwarded to the Acai site through WebMD, therefore thinking it endorsed it. I returned mine, but I don't know what will happen next. When I sent them an email requesting a RMA# to return it, they offered to give me a $20 credit plus cut the price in half with no shipping charges. I sent it back anyway. I saw a Vitamin catalog the other day that sold Acai for $7.00.
i already ordered my trial offer of acai berry when i went to your website..so immediately cancelled my order and membership though i wl will still be billed for shipping.thank you for the information.i learned my lessons.
I ordered it to and I didn't lose any weight either, I have been trying for a few months now b/c I am the biggest I have been in years so I wanted to try this b/c everyone has talked about how great it is, then after getting my free bottle they charged my account so needless to say its a bunch of BS and I don't recommend it to anyone.
I also ordered the 3.95 trial offer acai berry detox supplement and have been taking them for a week yesterday... I havent been able to tell any difference YET! I used a prepaid visa card that only had 13.17 left on it... they did take the 3.95 and sent the pills but no other charges so far. I recommend anyone wanting to try offers like this to use only a prepaid card that way they cant bill you each month. Im sure this is a rip off and it looks like Oprah hasnt even tired it yet!!!!
I have used the Acai Berry 48 hr. Detox and it worked fine, I got it at GNC.
I use the Acai Slim that is sold at GNC also and with exercise I have lost 5 pounds in less then a week.
I been using Acai Berry, for a week today and I have not lost any weight. I have been excersing 3 times a week and watching what I eat. I just canceled my credit card before they try charging it. Am disappointed I only tryed it because of Oprah Show.
I use a food supplement that has Acai Berry and 17 other fruits in it. It has made me feel great! I have seen good results in others too. Some have lost weight, most have a feeling of well being and more energy. You have to watch out for the counterfeit Acai Berry. There is one juice that is manufactured differently than the others.
Stay away from the marketing scam from Mona Vie. The juice holds zero value other than a fruit juice. I have don't extensive blood testing to show if results have changed after drinking this juice for one month. It did nothing. For for 150$ you can have very expensive fruit juice.
My son-in-law runs blood work and tested his cholesterol before starting Monavie and 3 weeks after. He dropped 6 points and his good cholesterol went up. It doesn't work the same for everyone, but for those of us who benefit from it, it's hard not to tell your friends and family about it. In the last 2-3 weeks I've had several people look at me and ask, "What are you doing you look great." This was after a very long and stressful day at work. Sorry if you've fallen prey to the acai berry pills for weight loss. There isn't enough acai berry in it to do any good.
When will you people learn? There's no secret pill to weight loss. If anyone claims they have them, it's a scam. It's simple really, you want to lose weight? WORK OUT. Stop throwing your money away and being a couch potato.
I am one more person who was looking to the antioxident value of the pills. No where that I remember does it say on the internet that the actual cost will be $45+ and they will be sending more pills and charging every month. In my case that came in writing so small in the package I needed a magnifying glass to read it. Be aware the company will give you a hard time when you try to cancel. I immediately called and cancelled my credit card after getting off the phone with their customer service. I still have the pills as well, since I intend to wait the speak with someone when they realize they cannot charge me any more money.
can someone tell me more about Mona-vie?
Mona-vie is a scam. Don't waste your money. Want a healthy juice, buy any dark juice at your local grocery store.
I used the Ultra Acai from Vitamin Shoppe and it worked great as a cleanse. I did lose about 3 pounds but I think it was the diet I am on. I do think I am more energetic but that could be exercise. I am still taking it for the cleansing benefit.
I tried the "free" trial, just pay shipping. Next thing I know, there was a $70.00 charge on my bank account. I contacted the company to complain and they said they cancelled my "membership", but would not refund my money. I cancelled my debit card and threatened them with nasty emails. They DID finally refund my money. It is a MAJOR SCAM. Be careful!!
STAY AWAY FROM THE ACAI BERRY INTERNET SCAM WITH INFOMEDIA.
I also got sucked into the "trial" acai berry internet scam with a company called Infomedia @ 1-970-278-0001. I thought that I was honestly only purchasing the $3.95 trial and had no knowledge of the additional shipments that I would receive at a cost of $83.90 each time. I have called several times and emailed several times to cancel my account. I am now once again promised that my account will be cancelled however they say that I must eat the cost of the 3 orders that have by the way been returned. "They are checking with their staff to see if these were returned before they will refund". I am currently out of work and can not afford these extra charges that were done without my knowledge. Again, I would have never agreed to such terms had I been made aware of this. I only wanted to try them and by the way they didn't work at all.
Unless you get "diet" (splenda sweetened)grape juice from the store, all you are doing is when drinking that fruit juice is drinking sugar, which spikes your insulin, ultimately making it impossible to shed pounds. WHY ON EARTH IS SHE PROMOTING THAT TO THE DIETERS WHO ARE READING THIS? At least if you eat actual grapes you are getting the polyphenols plus any fiber that they have that the juice doesn't have AND they are more filling than juice.
I have used the Acari Berry with Colon Cleanse for almost one month now. I have lost 5 pounds but I have dropped down my portion size in all meals considerably. Whenever you order online for anything you know is going to need to be replaced in a month always read the fine print. I cancelled my Acari Berry and Colon Cleanse right away and it was really easy to do. The people were great and they didn't try to sell me anything else. I just paid the 5.95 for shipping.
FYI My doctor recommended this product but he wasn't sure where to get it.
He recommended it for energy that was natural and I found it at Wal- Mart of all places and I got a two month supply for around 8 bucks!
Obviously there is no " magic pill"
We all know that the best source for weight loss is always
" diet and excercise"
I don't mean going on a "diet"
Watching what you eat by eating healthy and excerise daily will not only help you lose weight but will help with lots of different medical conditions. I do take the berry supplement along with other supplements. No supplement will work without you working as well.
For now it works for me and you can't beat paying only 8 dollars!!
The internet scam to order acai berry is a TOTAL SCAM--make sure to read the fine print. I also had to spend precious time on the phone trying to get these people to stop charging by credit card for this totally worthless product. WebMD's logo is on their home page inferring that it is endorsed by them as well as celebs like Rachel Ray. Do these people just take money to endorse anything? Guess I'm just another person who had to learn the hard way...
I ordered my free 14 day trial from a pop up web site called Emmasweightlossecret.com she said that she was a mother of 2 from where I live and had lost weight. This site is no longer up and working now. Well this came from FWM Labatory/Hollywood, Fl. They cancelled my member ship so they said but want refund my money on the next bottle of $80+ dollars which I have not next received. I have talked to sales person then a supervisor and no help at all. This is a major scam don't fall for it. It's like talking to a brick wall. My shipping charge was to be $2.00 per my print out from the day I ordered it they charge me $4.06 they could not understand that I had my print out showing $2.00 nothing has been done about that either. Please don't fall for this scam..I to am calling the Federal Trade Commissions and American General Office! I am also posting on all web sits that I can about this SCAM, I told them that I was going to do this that people remember the BAD more than the good and that didn't bother them at all.
i was almost about to order the 'free' trial until i read the agreement and decided to look up some info about the pill and im so glad i did.. thank u all for your posts... saved me money and time..
I too almost fell for the Acai Berry pills scam. How sad that I was searching information to begin a diet with webmd and this info popped out of no where. I was pretty desperate to try anything. Good thing I decided to research more information before just jumping on it...Thanks for the information.
I've been using the Acai cleanse and Acai plus from Hi=Health it does provide energy and help cleanse. However it is a mix of other ingredients that do the trick. Especially green tea!!
OMG I was just about to order acai berry to because of the Oprah show and a weight loss story that I seen online. She said she lost 42 pounds in 15 weeks. Sure glad I double checked on webmd before falling for it.
Thanks a bunch
Please don't blame Oprah Winfrey or Rachel Ray or WebMD for the scammers selling acai or mona vie or any of that junk. The hustlers selling these things put anyone's name on them without asking. They lie about anything - including endorsements - to make a buck.
Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
Want to lose weight? Eat less, eat healthy foods, and exercise more. It's simple, but oh so hard to do. We want to be able to take a pill and make the fat go away, but it won't. We have to do it the hard way. But if we stick together and try to support each other I really think we can do it.
Good luck to all of you.
Ordered free trial. Lost no weight and had no extra energy. Had trouble cancelling my monthly charge that I did not know about. Total scam, don't buy in.
Let's face it, people...there's no such thing as a magic pill. The only reliable, safe way to lose weight is to cut your calories and increase your exercize. I suspect that, if acai berries work on some people, a placebo effect is going on! I've lost 100 lbs in a year and a half and it was with no magic pill, it was with Weight Watchers. You wanna lose weight? Join Weight Watchers - you won't get spammed, scammed or overcharged and heads up, it will probably be cheaper than buying all the fad meds!
THANK YOU ALL FOR THE INFO. I HAVE NEVER BEEN ON THIS WEB SITE BUT I AM REALLY GLAD I DID SO BEFORE BEING SUCKED INTO THE SCAM. I WAS THINKING OF TRYING THE PRODUCT OUT. IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE THAT HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL TAKING THIS PRODUCT. I ALSO WANTED TO SECOND THE MOTION THAT WEIGHT WATCHERS WORKS. I HAVE DONE THAT PROGRAM AND IT IS WONDERFUL AND HAD GREAT SUCCESS ON IT. MY COMPLAINT REASON I NO LONGER DO IT IS BECAUSE IT IS VERY TIME CONSUMING. BUT IF SOMEONE IS LOOKING TO LOSE REAL WEIGHT AND GET HEALTHY, WEIGHT WATCHERS REALLY WORKS!!! MAYBE OPRAH SHOULD ENDORSE THEM.
I too was thinking of buying this product becuase of a "blog" I read on line. I was reading the web sites looking for actual studies and information about their products and couldn't find anything. I started to get suspicious so came to WEB MD for the facts. I have never taken any diet supplement and I have lost over 50 pounds during the last year with moderate diet and excersise.
Thanks WEB MD for providing good information as always.
Mona Vie and acai berry are not a scam. I have been using them for 3 weeks now and I have alot more energy, feel great and have lost weight too, along with lowering my blood pressure. I see this as good results, not bad but I guess everyone is different.
BOY ARE YOU RIGHT. NO QUICK FIX!
WATCH WHAT YOU EAT AND MOVE!!!
I TOO WAS ON THE VERGE OF BUYING THIS PRODUCT I'M SO GLAD I LOGGED ON TO WEB-MD AND CHECKED THIS OUT.
THANKS FOR THE INFO...
I was one of those that got the scam on the credit card thing I kept getting the email about Acai Berry 1500.Western Union called me one dauy to confirm many wire transfers to the Ukrain. I never used the credit card before so tracked it down to a company in Las Vegas and found that it was a bogus bissiness. I never got my FREE TRIAL FOR 2.79 I only go the headache and wieght loss because us being violated.
Thanks web MD. I was about to buy it.
thanks web md I was just about to be sucked in as well. sure glad I read the small print before hitting the submit to double check on your site.
appreciate your good work to keep us all in the loop about scams that just works on our cards.
yup just hit the gym eat rainbow healthy veges and fruits is what really works
Thanks Web Md and all the ones who got stuck with a non working pill! I noticed the colon cleanse was the other factor in one of the ads...Sounds as though I may have ended up being on the toilet all day! Thanks again!!!!
Simply Put....
NO SUGARS, AND NO WHITE FLOWER>
But you must be diligent.
Do it! I lost 10 Lbs in 14 days. Make sure you are consuming at least four to five bottles of water a day to help flush out your system and keep you hydrated!
Welcome your thin body back!!
sandra says .....
it worked for me for 2 weeks, but after it all came back and more....like some said eat healthy and you will loose. So far I lost 13 pounds all natural just changed my diet....
I ordered the "free" trial of the Acai Berry and did a little experiment. I took it every day for 1 week and lost 5 pounds. I didn't take it for 1 week and followed the same diet plan I was on when I took the supplement. I lost 3 pounds.
I've been watching my caloric intake, exercising 30-45 minutes a day, having 3 servings of low fat dairy and eating lean meats, whole grains and lots of fruits and veggies. I definitely think that is the key.
I am taking it again for another week (since I have another week's worth in the bottle) and it did "help" a little. But, I won't order it again and thanks to this blog, am going to make sure that I call to cancel my membership before they send me another bottle. I may even cancel my credit card to save myself some aggrevation.
its working for me,10 days now and i have lost 9lbs im really pleased with it,every one is different, but it is working for me.
it is wofking for me 10 days now and i have lost 9lbs i cant beleive it i found something that works for me i have read so much about this acia berry lots of people say it didn't work for them, this is the truth i am a security guard i dont get much time to execise in fact i hate exercise i do a bit of walking not a lot,i thought when i orded the aciaberry will it work, and to my shock it is working, not every one is the same it is working on me i love it ill let you now more in two weeks as i am getting married on october 3rd i am trying to get down to 111lbs i am 145lbs at this moment in time.
what a scam i had the free trial and a month later they charged me £74 twice im gutted.
Thank You for the honest truth about the nutrition values of assorted fruits. I am a Concord Grape grower. Concord Grape Juice has many health benefits that have been studied under real science that then undergoes a peer review process. Unfortunately, the big processors have done little over the last 100 years to further develop any better products from this popular fruit. I am working with other farmers to bring Concord grapes into the mainstream. We harvest the fruit fresh in the morning, quickly process it to remove the seeds, and immediately freeze. Now we have a product we are making grape pies with, and hope to develop other products that use the entire fruit including all the skins. Our product does not use any heat or enzymes to break down the fruit. So all the natural fiber, enzymes, pectin and nutrients remain in the fruit.
Any ideas for healthy products we could/should look into would be greatly appreciated. Most of you are much more knowledgeable on the overall health field than I. My focus is around the Concord Grape.
Thanks to all! And again thanks for the honesty.

I too jumped on the $4.95 off for the bottle of Acai pills only to see that a mere 4 days after the original order was made my account got hit for another $139.95. I went back onto the website where I purchased the pills and to no avail...there was no phone number to call, nor was there a website to send my concern to. I ended up having to call my bank and cancel my credit card that I had used and fortunately they opened up an investigation and in the end were able to credit my money back to my account citing that they were fraudulent charges. I should have done my homework before I made that purchase. I definitely learned from this mistake.
My husband, me and our two boys started drinking Monavie in January of 2009 and have had great results. My husband had arthritis in his elbow and knees from getting up and down in a semi truck for many years and I had lower back pain from years of picking things up wrong and sitting in a task chair as a secretary for 15 yrs. As long as we drink our juice we feel great. No pain and lots of energy. We also sleep much more sound. One of our sons has a slight touch of ADD which is one of the reasons he drinks it and has helped him tremendously. Also, we don't eat enough fruits of vegetables daily so we get over our daily intake with our Monavie. It is amazing to listen to the success stories tell from helping with fibromyalgia, lowering blood sugar, lowering cholesteral and blood sugar. My husband also has type 2 diabetes which he controls with 1000mg of chromagen and 4 ozs. of Monavie daily. This product has been a godsend to my family.
I had never heard of acai or monavie then my son got some for my husband, he has diabetes, high blood pressure and arthritis. He's been taking it for about 7 weeks now and is very pleased he just ordered a 3rd case...he takes it everyday...says he feels better and he can't believe and he won't give it up..it's been well worth it for him. Sue
The Acai Berry diet is one of the biggest online scams at the moment. If you come across an Acai Berry diet, don’t believe the endorsements. Oprah and Rachael Ray are not pitching the diet. My favorites are the so-called personal blogs featuring some woman who miraculously lost 35 pounds on the Acai Berry diet. Notice that she is always from somewhere near you, has three children and a supportive husband. Here’s a great post on what these companies are doing to push online infomercials under the guise of people sharing personal weight loss stories.
I am so glad that I read the fine print and read the complaints from you that have tried this product. I really wanted to lose the weight due to a recent diagnosis of hypothyroidism and a 40lb weight gain. I saw this product and I wanted to try it but I was hesitant. I'm glad I followed my first mind. I'm really sorry for those of you that was caught up in this scam. I am very thankful that you informed others so that they won't lose their hard earned money. We are in a recession.
this is funny, There is one company that bottles the acia berry and has been tested to retain 92-95$ of the value. The acia berry looses it's value 24-48 hours after being picked. The juice from Costco uses heat pasteurization, it cooks the values out. So either you eat it fresh or you drink .....?.. They have a patent on the process, They freeze dry it, then turn it into a powder. Scientist, the FDA and doctors tested the ....?.. juice and found it has 6 times the antioxidants of any other berry or fruit known to man. It can increase your metabolism, that's where the weight loss comes from. So yes do the research, it can be healthy for you depending on who and how it is processed, Just because it is acia doesn't mean anything if it's not prepared properly. Thats why people are telling you it is healthy, because it really is!!! But unless you go to Brazil you wont get it fresh.
This is what I found on the blog where I first learned of Acai Berry Detox:

Acai Berry can be a great supplement. Just don't get sucked into internet pop ups. They are ALWAYS a scam. Got to GNC or your local health food store and purchase them!
THANKS FOR LETTING ME KNOW ABOUT ALL THE SCAMMING THAT IS GOING ON!!! IM SURE THAT THE JUICE OR THE PILL WORKS ALONG WITH CUTTING CALORIES AND ECXERCIZING.
THIS WAS ON RACHEL RAY'S OFFICIAL SITE.......Many of you have brought to our attention concerns regarding solicitations involving Açai Berry products that bear Rachael Ray’s name or photo. i am on duromine and acai berry pills to kick start my new lifestyle and weight loss program. so far in 3 months i have lost 36kg. but i was very overweight. 18yrs old 158cm tall and 112kg. i cant wait to be a size 12 again.
I'd also have to say, look out for the "trolls" that are posting comments here. If they tell a story that touts just how much the product does, and that it's a "Godsend" then it is probably a scam artist trying to keep people interested in the bogus product. Especially the fake posts about "monavie". If it were a miracle cure, legit companies would be pushing this stuff with big ad campaigns.
If you would look around people are pushing this stuff. "big companies" can't because it isn't their product to push. Drink a bottle or two and if you feel the same why fine. But don't be a hater on something that works for someone. I drink it and I don't need to loose weight or make money...I drink it because it is healthy. Look on you tube and see what FOX NEWS said about it...maybe that will change your mind about Monavie. I got scamed by the pills to...but the juice...can't touch it...to dang good!
Yeah.. I love how people ONLY focus on the negative comments about it and push the positive comments aside.. It works differently for everyone and I also love that most of the negative comments were about the PILLS not the JUICE! I've been with Monavie for about 2 weeks so far and I'm very excited about this product.. For some people it works within a couple days, for some a couple weeks and for others it may take a couple months.. But if you take 4 ounces EVERY day of Monavie it doesn't matter who you are you are GOING to feel a difference!.. Monavie is NOT a scam! Those pills may not work because it takes a lot longer for pills because they have to break down in your stomach, but for juice it goes right through your body and ACTUALLY works and will make a difference in your life..
