Slow cooked oatmeal made from scratch, served with brown sugar crumble and a choice of bananas, blueberries and blackberries or apple cinnamon...hungry for breakfast yet? Well, until the end of March, you can get steel cut oatmeal with real fruit for one dollar at Jamba Juice (a smoothie chain based on the west coast). They are calling it their "Oatmeal-fueled Stimulus Plan."

Here's the catch...you have to visit the website, www.oatmealforabuck.com and print out the coupon.

I probably don't have to tell you that oatmeal is a great breakfast choice - it's a good source of fiber and protein, so it tends to keep you satisfied through the morning. The fruit topping and brown sugar crumble will be sure to satisfy your morning sweet tooth too (if you have one).

The suggested price of the oatmeal is $2.95 - so during the month of March you are saving 2 dollars!

I eat steel cut oats almost every morning. I prepare them the night before by boiling 2 cups of water with a pinch of salt, turn off the heat, adding 1/2 cup of oats (makes 2 servings), cover and let sit overnight. In the morning, it only takes about 10 to 15 minutes to finish cooking. I especially enjoy adding peanut butter (smooth or crunchy) and warm milk to the oats after cooking. PB&J is good too. Tastes like a cookie.

The answer is yes: not so much nutritionally, as in texture and flavor. Instant has been partially cooked, and rolled out into a powder that reconstitutes quickly. Steel cut hasn't been cooked, and has been cut into little nuggets that when slowly cooked become a chewy nugget... they can also be toasted ahead of time, for a nuttier and more intense flavoe.

I eat oatmeal everyday foR the past 5 years.A friend of mine is 94 and still driving a living alone she is in excellent health. I asked her what was her secret to such good health. She said OATMEAL.

You can purchase organic bulk steel cut oats for about $1.50 per pound. I microwave them in a large bowl with raisins, ground walnuts or almonds dash of cinn and or nutmeg. I sometimes add honey or artificial ground sugar. In addition , I add some soy grits and apple fiber. This completely covers all your requirements for at least a half day and your not hungry, as slow cooked steel cut 0ats cause a very slow release of insulin. I reheat ea day as my batch makes at least 2 wks worth. Just keep covered in the refrig. This concoction cost far less that 1.oo per serving.If you really want to save , buy oats from a feed store and grind them in your coffee grinder. I am serious about this. Enjoy either way. Neil B

I cook a couple weeks servings of steel cut outmeal with cranberries and chopped almonds. Stored in fridge and eaten cold with yogert and blue berries. For more crunch a few cherrios or other dry oat cereal...keeps me going.
