Taste Test Tuesday: KFC Takes the "Fried" Out of Chicken!
The other day I was driving down the street in my town and out of the corner of my eye spotted a big sign on the outside of the local KFC that said something about tasting the "unfried side of KFC". It didn't really click until I watched a commercial later that evening about the new Kentucky "grilled" chicken now being served at the KFC near you.
Well, my family has gotten into a grilled chicken groove lately - every Monday night I buy grilled chicken from a local deli/meat market (so much so that they call me "the chicken lady") and then I throw together Caesar Chicken Salad. Today, we tried out the new grilled chicken from KFC instead.
I had the nutrition information in tow, but I wondered as I ordered a bucket:
Compared to fried, the grilled chicken breast has:
How did my family like it? Granted my teen girls aren't used to bone-in chicken because I almost always cook with boneless skinless chicken breast - so the bones threw them off a little...but we all definitely liked the chicken.
It's a step in the right direction for the Colonel, that's for sure. But if I had it my way, I would take it one step further and use skinless breast and thighs so you could enjoy the yummy seasoning without the skin. I can dream can't I?

I had the nutrition information in tow, but I wondered as I ordered a bucket:
- Would there be skin on the chicken breast? (The answer is "YES")
- Would it have many of the same herbs and spices as their yummy signature fried chicken? (The answer is "YES")
Let's compare the nutrition info for the original recipe fried chicken breast and the new grilled chicken breast:
| 1 Grilled Chicken Breast | 1 Original Recipe Chicken Breast |
| 180 calories | 370 calories |
| 35 g protein | 38 g protein |
| 0 g carbohydrate | 7 g carbohydrate |
| 4 g fat | 21 g fat |
| 1 g saturated fat | 5 g saturated fat |
| 0 g trans fat | 0 g trans fat |
| 110 mg cholesterol | 120 mg cholesterol |
| 440 mg sodium | 1050 mg sodium |
Compared to fried, the grilled chicken breast has:
- Half of the calories
- 80% less total fat and saturated fat
- 60% less sodium too!
How did my family like it? Granted my teen girls aren't used to bone-in chicken because I almost always cook with boneless skinless chicken breast - so the bones threw them off a little...but we all definitely liked the chicken.

Very original idea to do this comparison, and I found this article very interesting, too. I never would have thought the results would be like this. Thanks!
wow! great idea, have you shared this idea with the KFC co. yet? you should..i don't like the skin either.
I just had the 2 piece grilled chicken, leg and thigh, it was great! It was even better than finger-licking good!!!!!

I did not care for it. The flavor tasted like it came out of a bottle, or rather, the grill was dying and they squirt it with fluid to get it going again. The chicken was moist.
aside from my order getting messed up, I ordered white meat and got dark. :-( the pieces were very small, and I would say it was more baked then grilled. the flavor was okay, but would have been much better if it were fresh.I liked it when they served their tender roast chicken. Now that was some yummy chicken!
I tried the new grilled chicken,
and it was so dried it tasted like
leather and it had about half the
meat as a normal breast. The manager said it sometimes comes out
that way. So buyer beware.

I tried the grilled chicken last week. It was delicious!
I had a two piece white meat (1 breast & 1 wing) and cream potatoes & gravy and greens beens and a biscuit, I had unsweeten tea to drink. It was great. Only 48 carbs My BS was only 120 2 1/2 hours later.
I tried it and it was greasier than the original. The chicken was moist, but it left my hands so greasy I couldn't help but wonder how much oil or other cooking liquid had been placed on it. I have a hard time believing the 180 calories was accurate on my piece - it sure felt more like 300 and I even took the skin off.
I'm going to save my calories for something really worth it like pizza, pasta or a milkshake and stick to my homemade grilled chicken breast.
We tried a bucket of this new chicken and I asked for extra white meat, which was included for extra $$. I am glad to see the nutritional values here...I was curious. We really liked the chicken better then the doughy original. Now if KFC would work on those delicious biscuits...luv 'um but I bet they're loaded with calories!!
Mine was so small that I didn't get enough meat to actually taste it, but what I did eat didn't agree with me later on, I kept burping it up!
Please educate yourself about kfc AND the cruelty they inflict on their chickens. Is not about grilled being healthier, its about the animal abuse. There are undercover videos on PETA's website, or just google the words, KFC cruelty and see for yourself.
Not a fanatic just trying to keep it real.
No one should endorse KFC or for that matter eat animals that have been stressed and abused before being or during slaughter. Not healthy for you or them.
The new grilled chicken at KFC is awesome. It tastes good and healthy. The animal cruelty thing...I don't believe it is as reported.
My chicken (both light and dark) was delicious. Moist, tasty and much better than I thought it would be. I would like skinless better.
We tried a sample of the grilled chicken and did not care much for it. We'd rather have the original fried chicken instead.
I tried it and loved it!! I compared it to El Pollo Loco chicken which I love and the 7 herbs & spices took me back to my childhood because I no longer eat their fried chicken. It is really tasty, try and compare for yourself?
Chicken Lover :)
I waited in the drive thru for 20 minutes. Ordered a bucket of "Grilled" chicken. Got home, and it looked and tasted like rotissary sp? chicken. Not sure if they ran out and gave me something different but I was not impressed.
omg! seriously do some real research before you decided to make kfc rich and say that the chicken is any healthier than it really is..this right here shows that there chicken really truly does contain msg (neurotoxin to your brain)

wow i cant believe people like eating sick chickens loaded with bad toxins!
Tried the grilled one. It was tasteless. Better stick with orginal recipe. It's worth eating fatty foods only once a week and eat healthy for the other 6 days. It keeps the balance and I don't miss out on anyting. Do your cardio, go to Gym and fulfill your cravings once a week. Eat whatever you want. I do! and am in perfect shape
KFC has a great new product in grilled chicken! It has a wonderful flavor for fewer calories than the oroginal recipe. On a sidenote, KFC is not cruel to their chickens! Please do the research and not watch a bunch of videos that peta has put together on the internet. KFC purchases their chickens from the same suppliers that Wal Mart, McDonald's and grocery stores use. Does Tyson or Goldkist ring a bell? Seriously, these videos are not accurate. Do you think that when they are in the processing plant they pick out which chicken is a McDonald's or KFC chicken? KFC does not own any processing plants and remember, all these plants are FDA approved and are inspected on a regular basis. Education is the key! By the way, I work for a very large processing plant!
