Modern Food
Our world today - our civilization,
Progressively shaped by socialization,
Is a cultured modern derivative,
Of hunting tribes more primitive.
We lived in caves or somewhere outdoors,
We ate what we hunted and fished from the shores.
We foraged for berries and other fruits,
Leaves and mushrooms, stems and roots.
We evolved to seek meat, and fruit as a treat,
Thus our cravings for fat and for sweet.
The key to survival and fighting disease,
Had always been eating more calories.
For nearly all of human existence,
We lived this way with no assistance,
From complex tools or modern machines,
Survival depended on simple routines.
There were no farms, no tractors, no crops,
No mills or flour, or bakery shops.
Our natural diet did not contain,
Cereal, bread, pasta, or grain.
No hot dogs, pizza, or pepperoni,
Sausage, salami, cheese or bologna.
No cookies, pies, donuts or cake,
Or any kind of food that is fake.
Modern society has seriously faltered,
We've become addicted to the food we've altered.
The modern foods we love today -
We're just not designed to eat that way.
Once we see it the truth is so clear,
Our bodies can't handle the treats we hold dear.
The reason this problem remains unsolved,
Is due to the fact that we have not evolved,
A new set of genes to eat "modern" food,
Without getting sick, so we must conclude,
The natural way, the way that is best,
Is to eat the food we're designed to digest.
Fish and fowl, or very lean meat,
Are possible foods that we might eat.
Butternut squash, peppers and beans,
Corn, peas and beets, and all kinds of greens.
Carrots, zucchini, melons and berries,
Peaches and oranges, mangoes and cherries.
No human tribe or society,
Has ever had such a variety,
Of healthy food so easy to get,
We take it for granted we tend to forget,
Our good fortune for this cornucopia,
Some might call it a utopia.
The foods that can save us are found right beside,
The foods that will kill us and rot our inside.
We all face this challenge, we all face this choice,
We all have free will, we all have a voice.
Our future is bright, our potential is vast,
Once we learn this lesson from our distant past.

I'm beginning to understand all that you say,
And starting to think of a "better" way,
Of eating the "right" foods to help bring my bs numbers lower,
And things to go into my bloodstream much slower,
No more orange juice, pizza, chips or a candybar,
Much more exercise to keep my body and heart up to par,
My goals are set, with much more information to use,
Your ideas about diabetic health,
I just can't refuse.
Thanks!

You have solved the puzzle,
And woken me from my nuzzle.
You made me realize
That in order to survive
I need all round nutrition
To improve my condition.
And I need to be careful
That in every mouthful
I keep the sugars low
To maintain a healthy glow.
And do lots of exercise
So that I can romaticise
With good health
Which I consider wealth
Because my body won’t protest
Against the medicines that I detest.
I would expect more out of a trained medical professional than the ryming gibberish you have claimed to be poetic.
No farms indeed! Maybe you can afford to pay others to "forage" for you but I suspect those that pay for your services benefit from modern agriculture and the abundant affordable food it provides.
As you eventually point out, we all have important choices to make. It is modern agriculture that provides that opportunity.
There will always be bad choices that that one can make but that doesn't mean the food is fake.
He didn't say everything was fake. We just weren't designed to eat what is fake. Take cheese for instance, if it says food or product on it, there's a good chance that's fake. People were healthier back when they didn't eat all those sugary & processed foods. I think the poem is cute & informative.
I envy your talent at verse.
I couldn't write verse to save my life. :)
I'm not sure I buy the whole caveman logic. I do know our bodies have a hard time digesting grains so we cook them to make them 'more digestible' but the result is 'too digestible' which is not good either.
I like to think that good food is 'premade' for us i.e. it's grown ready for the eating on the tree or plant.
Hi Dr. Dansiger,
Totally agree with your rhymed message!
I wish they invited you here earlier when I was here disguised as Heretic, for many years working out my community service trying to save diabetics and vegetarians from their carbohydrate addiction.
Re: We all have free will, we all have a voice. Our future is bright, our potential is vast,

Yes but not all! I found that not all people _want_ to use their free will, especially among diabetic patients. I used to talk to them a lot. In my experience a vast majority of them are medical guru seekers that desperately want to be told what to follow (as long as it is within a current group-consensus) rather then figure it out for themselves using will power and logic.
I think you may like this article. It adds to your poem.
Regards,
Stan (Heretic)
