So scary, but usually so meaningless...
Blood in the semen, or hematospermia, is a fairly common event that can occur at any point in a man's life. Men are not accustomed to seeing bleeding from any body part or in any secretion. So when blood is present, most men panic.
"Could it be cancer? Infection? Injury? Will my genitals shrivel up and fall off?" are questions that race through men's minds when they see blood in a place that is not expected.
It can be bright red, clots, speckles, or just brown tinged. The good news is that hematospermia is not rare and is almost always a meaningless finding of no concern.
Usually not associated with any pain or discomfort, blood probably enters the semen from a small blood vessel that tears during ejaculation or even straining with constipation. Sometimes it just happens.
And as fast as it comes on, it can disappear. Other times, blood may linger for days, weeks or even months. If the bleeding is heavy or prolonged, then further evaluation by a urologist is in order. If there is pain or burning, then it is time to see your urologist.
For older men over 45, it is probably a good idea to get a prostate exam and PSA blood test, just to rule out any prostate cancer concerns. The good news is that if and when it occurs, it is not an omen of pending death or spontaneous combustion of your genitals.

My husband was woke up one morning with bels palsy, I took him to the doctor but found out that his HBP was stroke level. They put him on HBP medication and it has brought it down to normal level. His primary doctor wants to do a complete exam on him. He really acts weird about the prostate exam. He is 37 years old and I told him that the doctor may do the exam or may not. A gut that he works with told him that he wil ejaculate during the exam.. This is why he doesn't want it done.. Is this true. Please let me know.. His appt. is on Thursday.

No, what your husband was told is NOT true. Men do not ejaculate during the prostate exam. The exam itself lasts about 20 seconds and is as much fun for the doctor as it is for the patient.

My almso 70 yr old dad had an enlarged Prostate surgery in feb 2005. His PSA is fairly normal since, though he does suffer from incontinence now. recently they discovered a cyst in that area? how dangerous a situation is this, and what is the best option? pls advise.

I am a young, fairly athletic male with no health issues and certainly not regarding what I am going to ask you about. About a week ago I was playing soccer and the ball was kicked to my groin. The extreme pain obviously went away, but it has been over a week and there is very little to minor subtle pain behind the left testicle. I don't know what to make of this, but I only notice it when I am running extremely fast or out of the shower drying. Is it serious or will it go away in time? I'm currently in a relationship with a woman and we were doing some "things" and some pressure was applied to the testicles. It hurt a little but I didn't say anything. Two days later, I felt a little pain and I assumed it was what is commonly referred to as "blue-balls." I am in my earlt 60s; a coupe of years ago I have noticed that my seminal fluid was a little pinkish. At he time I thought I prbably I am runing out of that stuf; never felt pain. Hoever, I went to see a specialist, who afte reading the tests' resutlts, he said you have some type of inflemation, and prescribed antibiotic; an d it improved a little bit; and later on,the fluid was normal, but since the last 10 months the same problem occured again. hi, when i was around 15, i noticed there was some blood in my semen after i had wet dreams. i then masturbated to see if it was a one time thing, but there was again a brown tinge. Once it was a red tinge. It went away after about a month and I am now 18.

Last week I was having sex with my girlfriend and when we were done I noticed blood inside the condom. there was no pain whatsoever, but when I went and urinated there was blood, upon urinating about ten mins later it was clear. I am 54 years old and had a TUNA procedure done one month ago. After wearing a catheter for periods of 2, then 4, then another 4 days I was still not able to urinate. I have self catheterized since that 10 day point and still can't urinate. My Dr. doesn't want to do anything else until the 2 month point. Meanwhile I'm taking flomax 1/day, Cipro, and Ibuprofen. I have had some fresh blood in my urine and dry blood in my semen, though less lately. One Dr. said I shouldn't try another procedure until this 'settles down', another said you can do another procedure (TURP or Lazer), now if needed. I'm getting frustrated, what is your opinion. This is a serious question. I opened my pants in the bathroom to find that my scrotum had been bleeding badly enough to soil my underwear and then I found a small cut or opening on it that was bleeding pretty profusely. I was recently involved in a motorcycle accident and am now rather banged up. No broken bones thankfully but I was stricken in the groin. It didn’t hurt too badly after the accident because of all the excitement and adrenalin but thirty minutes later I began to feel the repercussions of the accident. Later that night it still did not hurt too badly. The next day, today I noticed my left testy was slightly bruised and I could still feel a little bit of pain, especially when I sat down or took a shower or checked for damage. Thanks for posting the “panic relief note” regarding hematospermia. Yes I was a BIT worried when my girlfriend noticed the red tinted semen. After reading your note I do remember having a slight constipation bout and I’m a “little” more at ease but still slightly concerned. Although it couldn’t hurt to add an Exam to my New Years Resolution Check-off Sheet., to check the “boys” and have a full exam checkup.

Ok. Very embarrassing but regardless I am still worried.
One year ago at Christmas I ejaculated and there was a pinkish color. Some blood apparently. My fiancee and I checked on it the net about it and most sites say if it goes away it can just be inflammation and will clear itself up.
It went away maybe the next day because as scared as I was to try I had to know so I masturbated again.
Now it happened again about 5 months ago, and again just the next day was gone.
I am a little scared now because it has happened again about a week ago. The only problem is it's been lingering. I also get a pain in my groin area sometimes when I try to masturbate.
I stop immediately, for the most part. I also have a slight discomfort in urination. I don't have a problem going, just it hurts a little sometimes. When I was 5 I got my penis caught is a pj zipper and it kinda zipped some skin together at the entrance. I assumed that was the reason as the opening on my penis is a little smaller then I feel it should be.
I don't feel regular stool-wise. Sometimes I am constipated and other times I have no problem. I read on the site that straining from constipation can cause minor tears that can produce slight blood in semen or urine. So I thought that might be an issue.
I am 19 years and 8 months old.
Can someone tell me what risks I may be in for? I try to do a testicular check every so often to check for lumps but I don't know what should or shouldn't be there so it's hard to tell. My testes do feel a little more tender then usual, if that matters.
Please let me know if anyone has any ideas. And I do intend on seeing a urologist next week on Friday if I can get a referral from a doctor I am currently seeing.
