Back Pain Sufferers and Knee Pain
Did you know that many folks who suffer back pain also suffer knee pain? When a body part has been injured or hurts, it is normal for the body to try and protect it. This is called guarding.
When a body part is compromised, the next weight-bearing joint takes on an added responsibility of support. When the body part is the back or the hips for instance, the knees become the next weight-bearing joint. In prolonged cases, the knees can become vulnerable to injury and develop their own set of problems.
It is important therefore for anyone with a back problem to try and avoid knee problems. Here is a webpage that contains some good information about knees and how to protect this vulnerable weight bearing joint. I hope you find it helpful!

does anyone have any advice as to what to do with pain from a herniated disk pressing against the sciatic nerve? a doctor that my medical group authorized me to visit wants me to take 3 wks. off work and stay in bed. if that doesn't work, then a mri and possibly surgery. i'm caught between the whole work thing and the dr.'s opinion. i'm a first time sufferer and am seeking a second opinion.
have had the problem, the doc. is giving good advice? if you tolerate pain ok, you can do light work and i do mean light, only perfect lifting, use ice no heat, get drugsthey will get you thrugh the rough part, do some light yoga streaching no jerking, it will calm down on its own in time its own time. you must be patient. good luck fc
Has anyone tried FlexProtex? I have been suffering from knee problems due to an accident that occured a few years back. I saw an infomercial, and although it isn't in my nature, decided to give it a try. The results seem to be pretty positive. My knee doesn't bother me when walking on stairs or when I'm on my feet for a long time. Has anyone else had any experience with it? I think I'm going to re-order.
Hi folks! You might get more responses if you post on the Pain Management board! Folks are still discovering these blogs as they are relatively new feature for this site--where the boards have been around for much longer. In fact, you might consider exploring the conversations already posted as you may gain some valuable insights from folks who have already shared there! Will watch for ya! Indie
Your best bet is not complete bedrest. You should see a qualified physical therapist who will give you sound advice. Although severe cases may need surgery, long-term outcomes (e.g. 3 months plus down the road are the same with surgical vs. non surgical intervention) Look for someone in your area with Orhtopedic specialty. They can be located on www.apta.org
Back pain radiating down to knee.
Here is a remedy given to me when I was really hurting several yrs ago. Go to the deep end of your
swimming pool with a life preserer on or a foam ring around your neck to keep your head above water and hang by your neck in the water without your feet touching bottom. Do this a couple times each day one hour each time. It works !

Has anyone out there had a Medial Branch Neurotomy (to damage the nerves to the facet joints with radiofrequency). I am scheduled for this procedure this week and have never talked to anyone who has had this done. Have already had all the steroid injections I'm allowed for awhile. I'm a little nervous.
Hi out there I have pain all the time. Ihad a back fussion and a neck fussion. I have pain in the middle of my back and pain down both legs. i get spams in the back . can't find anyone to help me. i need a new doctor you think so.
i have had a lumbar medial branch, last april it lasted for 8 months, and i just had another one done this morning. they work for me. It's not supposed to be a cure all, because the nerves grow back. But it sure beats the invasive alternative. personly, I highly recommend it. Good Luck, Jerri
Jerri(or anyone),
I just had medial branch neurotomy. It has been four weeks and I am still taking pain meds. How long did it take you to feel better? I would love to talk to someone who has been through this. Thanks, Kitty
been to Johns Hopkins Hospital for pain mgmt. 2 1/2 years with back pain. swimming pool advance works wonders--anything in water!
JHH may do RFA (radiofrequency ablation) where they kill off the nerves around the facets in the l.b. the pre-test (novacaine) worked well. do not stay in bed for more than 2-3 days if you can help it akc
I had terrible radiating pain into my one leg from a herniated disc. I really did not want surgery so I decided to try other conservative care. I went to a doctor of chiropractic and began getting adjusted. After the first couple of adjustments my pain had decreased almost completely!! I definitely suggest chiropractic care.
I have had back pain at L4 and been on bed rest and medication. The doctor has recommended me for lumbar radiofrequency ablation. He said it has been successful although each patient has relief for various periods of time. I hope it does the trick and I get rid of this back pain. He also recommended physical therapy.
what does the Lumbar medial branch radiofrequency ablation involve??
Just took the neighbor boy, age 19, to the dr. with terrible pain down one leg (left) from the lower back. His Mom went too and said that he is swollen across the buttocks. I thought he was going to pass out as he kept rolling around in the back of the van. The dr. wasn't even there, just nurse pract. Gave him more pain meds. He had an x-ray at the ER 3 days ago and it was unclear. How can I help?
Has anyone done the Medial Branch Nerve Ablation for prevention of headaches? I suffer from daily headaches, so I'm scheduled to do this is 2 weeks. I would like to know about the recovery. I heard the first few days are pretty painful. Please fill me in, if you have been through this.
I am waiting for authorization from insurance co, to have Medial Branch Neuotomy. I work for Ortho docs and I'm trying to avoid surgery. I was told that I could possibly be pain free for 9-18 mos. I really hope this works, I have been living with pain for approx. 5 years or so. If anyone else has any positive comments, please let us know.
Also looking for words of advise from people who experience the same pain as I. I have problems in the L4-5 spondolysthesis, bulging disk, and degenerative disk desease. Think I got problems or what?
For those of you who have disc and joint issues in the lumbar region; I have bulging discs in L2 and L3. Protruding discs and tears in L4 and L5. I have done everything from oral steroids to epedurals to facet joint injection. The facet joint injection was the procedure done to see if I was a candidate for the neurotomy. I was, and had the neurotomy done on 12/05/07. The pain from the procedure is beyond excruciating, but subsides in about 2 days; it takes 4 to 6 weeks to know if the neurotomy works. I will let you know if it worked. Beware of oral steroid treatment. I was on oral steroids for 3 months and ended up in emergency surgery for a perforated ulcer. NOT FUN!!!
I'm 15 years old and already i have degenerative disk disease. It hurts to walk most of the time, and bending over or laying on my stomach is unbearable unless i take vicodin. Some people at school say that I'll be in a wheel chair by the time I'm 20. I'm really worried about that, and was just wondering if anyone knew anything about it. I've been trying to research it, but nothing answers my questions.
Hi KB - I have been treated for the same thing. Go to see an Orthopedic doc. Try using Celebrex everyday and in the evenings use the Vicodin. This is the treatment I am currently on and I have relief most days. I am 44 and have been dealing with this for at least 20 years. I am NOT in a wheel chair and there is treatment out there. Find a good Ortho Doc in your area. Good luck and I wish you pain free days.
tahotrish
HI im only 17 and a about a month and half ago i couldnt walk the doctor said its abad case with sciatic nerve and somthing else with a swollen disc in my back i ve been going to therapy and resting but it just feels like im never gonna get back too 100% if any one had the same injury or similar how long did it take to fully recover?
I have had backpain for over a year now and the past 8 months has gone down to my knee. I had to leave my job because of it. My primary dr. did an MRI then sent me to a pain management dr. He gave me muscle relaxers 3 times a day and oxycottin 2 times a day. I was "dopey". I told him I would not be doped up 24/7 and refused to take the meds. I asked my primary dr. to refer me to a neurologist and I am pain free. He gave me an injection in the spine with cortisone at the L4 & L5 level. It is facet joint disease. They all thought it was sciatic nerve. In a way it is. there is inflamation between the facet joints in my back that is pinching the nerve. I sugges you go to a neurogolist and get an MRI. I don't do any moping, lifting , bending and etc. I just keep it light. I had to go throught 3 drs. to find exactly what is wrong with me. I do not recommend anyone go to a pain management dr who is in my condition cause from my experience all they do is dope one up.
Help!,
I have been out of work for over 5 months due to an injury to my back from restraining a client. I have been told that I have bulging disc, pinched nerves and have much trouble walking, sitting standing and driving seems to be the worst. I am currently seeing a chiropractor who has been able to keep my pain at bay for a short time. The people from worker's comp. insist I see a pain management doctor. My problem with this is that if all they do is deal with the pain and send me back to work (a job I was recently terminated from) the problem is still there. My chiropractor is against my returning to work but the worker's comp. people and my former employer keep sending me to different doctors in an effort to find just 1 doctor who will say I am capable of working. I do understand that there are people who claim to be hurt just to collect, I am not one of them. I do not enjoy being home everyday, especially being limited to what I can do.
I have degenertive disk disease, and arthritis. This cold weather is murder! The disk problems begin in my neck, then L4-6,and the extreme lower back.My problem is finding a doctor, preferably a neurosurgeon that will take medicaid.I've not been able to work for 4 years, and have progressively gotten worse.Pain meds that my PCP prescribes, don't even touch it.It's gotten to where I fall all of the time,if I try to move around without my walker. My sons wrestling matches,I have to use a wheelchair.I really need help.
signed,fitinthechair
DearKD, I was diagnosed with the same thing as you have when I was 19 and also told that I would be in a wheelchair by the time I was 25, but I fooled them. I am now 57 and still walking on my own. With the proper care and the right doctor's you can manage the pain. I have had 2 surgery's, but would not do that again as the pain is worse now than before the surgery. I am going to a pain clinic and the pain is now under control for the time being. Be patient and things will work out for you. Love and Prayers, Debbie
MY DOCTOR SUGGESTED THAT I HAVE RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYONE HAS HAD IT AND IF IT IS PAINFUL AND ALSO IF IT HELPED YOU. DEBBIE

Does anyone have SI Joint problems along with sciatic pain and protruding disc?I fell and I am still miserable.I have been going to m=ypain mangement dr.and physical therapy.Help!Jackie
I have had the same problem for the last year. I have taken time off work & had epidural injections. The injections helped for a short while, but then the pain returned. I am now undergoing IDD(Disc Decompression) Therapy. The Dr. said it will cause a vacuum effect & take the pressure off of the nerve root.
Thank you,I go see Dr.on Monday.Jackie
Sorry....Was it Painful to have the injections?Jackie
My husband has three torn and bulged discs in his lower back. He has had multiple exams performed on him - steroid injections, trigger point injections, and radiofrequencies as well as using a tens unit and various controlled pain medication (all which didn't help). The radiofrequencies have been the most successful so far. They lasted up to 10 months. However, this is not a fix just a relief of the pain. Over time scar tissue will build up which will lessen the effect of the exam. I am still a firm believer in the procedure however, we are going to see a orthopedic dr for a more precise radiofrequency exam which uses CT to locate the exact spot of his problem. Hope it will help him. Be very careful if you have lower back pain which results in lower leg pain. Chiropractors are just glorified physical therapists and that sort of treatment would do more harm than good.
I have a cyst on my facet joint ajacent to my L5 i have had 1 LTfacet injection and trigger point injections in leftside and also my right shoulder i feel these injections has not helped i am to have another LTfacet injection in which i am unsure of having since the ones i have had has not helped the doctors say i have some kind of inflamtory response going on the steroids in the injections they are giving me iam having horrible side affects from them if there is anyone out there with similar problems and has results with something else please please responed with recommendatons thanks
I have had Radio Frequency Ablattion done two times now. Being diabetic the regeneration of nerves took longer, allowing me longer relief. the proceudure worked great for me. The procedure proved to be slightly painful, but stopped immediately after the doctor removed the radio frequency device. Although just a 'band aid' I feel the raido frequency ablattion is a well worth it relief measure. Good Luck
I am haveing a procedure done also called "radiofrequency ablation" in my scacrum just below the spine to kill nerves that go to the brain that tell me I have pain...I am 48 but scared does anyone have anything to say about this procedure??? I go to painmanagement too and they dope me up and make it almost impossible to function...less pain but more irritable!
All workcomp doctors are PAID to find out nothing is wrong with you it is a know fact especially is Indiana...I worked at a place 15 yrs got fired for hurting my back and got nothing...lost my home and everything and no one gave a damn...I still suffer pain and it has been over 25 yrs...THE DON'T CARE and the GOVERNMENT lets it happen~! So you are better off to take it thru your own health insurance because you will get screwed by a work comp doctor...I don't know how they sleep at night~!
I got hurt at work in July 2007, I have been fighting my work and workmans comp ever scince. I do not have private insurance so I have to wait for everything. I have a S1 radiculopathy, they are trying for another MRI because I have had 2 SI Joint steroid injections, 3 S1 and 1 L5 epidural injections, I have gone to PT 2 different times and it is very frustrating, I feel usless I can't do much of anything without having alot of pain to deal with... any suggestions
Hi,
I went to my orthopedic specialist, and his diagnosis is a "Right Knee Internal DeRangement"..Is this serious??..He prescribed me 50 Lorect 10mg....But when I filled it, they gave me Hydrocodone 10/650. Now I've taken Hydrocode 10's, but not with that much tylenol..I's making me a bit nausaus..Could someone please give some advise?
Thanks A Million
Recently diagnosed with L4,L5,S1 osteoarthritis went through epidural as well as facet injections. Also attended pain management which lasted over 6 months none worked. Had ablation therapy last Tuesday on a scale of 1-5 it was a 1 believe me, should have recieved this long ago am feeling relief finally. Feel that pain mangement which is fee-for-service is a rip off as their interests are financial not patient relief oriented, face it it's a business. You might want to try losethebackpain.com which believes that over 80% of back problems are due to muscle imbalace, but you must be proactive here.Good luck!
I have the same, herniated disk pressing on sciatic nerve. Bed rest is definitely not the cure all. I have been to a Pain Mngmt Dr. who gave me 3 epidural cortisteroid injections in my spine. They did not help me much but everyone is different. My orthopedic dr is now sending me to a spinal neurologist. Have the MRI done and make sure you get a copy of the report.
I had RF Neurotomy 6/23/08 on L-4, L-5 and S-1 bilaterally in the morning. I was asleep for the entire procedure. I had zero pain last night and my pain today is about a 2 on a scale of 10. I am 72
and not a candidate for spine surgery. Have spent great sums on stretching machines, epidurals, accupuncture, PT, etc. Would highly recommend procedure. Live in central Florida and will respond to anyone wishing to e-mail me at evro@tampabay.rr.com
I am undergoing IDD therapy. This is the third week of four.....I believe it is working.I have a pacemaker so I had a EMG(UGH!!)and a Myleogram. It showed nerve problems. Thanks to all.
tkhillca....
take it easy ans make sure you get proper treatment. i suffer from the same problem which has really gotten worse as time goes on...
