Sleep and Pain: Part 2
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Sleep is a necessity. We all need sleep. Some need more than others. For folks taking medications for pain, sleep can become a challenge.

Some drugs can cause sedation. Sedation and sleep are not the same. When a person takes medication to fall asleep, they do not get the same benefits a person gets from naturally falling asleep. Quite often people who take sleeping medications, wake up feeling tired.

It can be hard feeling rested when your sleep is medically induced. If you have been taking sleeping pills on a regular basis, perhaps you need to consider a different approach to restful sleep.

Let's look into creating a tool box for sleep. If you were to create a tool box for sleepless nights, what would you put in it? What things can you do to help you fall asleep naturally/without drugs? Post your ideas as a comment to this entry.

Let's create a tool box full of ideas and options that can help folks relax and fall asleep. I look forward to hearing some of your secrets.

I have many sleep problems. I have moderate to severe pain 24/7.I deal with moderate pain by trying to stay busy during the day but at night I toss and turn. If I take drugs I usually suffer some side effect, if I don't I get little if any sleep. I have night terrors some times when I do sleep. That is the worst feeling in the world. I have never felt such terror in real life. I usually wake my husband in another room with my screaming. Recently I have been going to sleep with a walkie talkie in my hand, my finger on the call button telling myself I can call for help if I have a night terror. In reality I am paralyzed and can't move a muscle but holding it in my hand gives me a little security. I have a very good mattress, tried every pillow I've ever seen,I use a body pillow for ergonomics and have a ceiling fan to regulate temperature.I don't know anything else to do but I am not getting enough sleep. I'm tired and frustrated. I have GERD, hot flashes, fibromyalgia, arthritis and chronic abdominal pain.

Wow!!I was amazed to hear you talk about night terrors.I have an injury to my back that lingers down to me left leg.Which unfortunatly keeps me from sleeping well, hardly at all.I also have moderate to severe pain.I have noticed terrible nightmares that i can not wake up from. This pain has been happening since 5-22-06,But i have recently started these horrible dreams.I wonder if it is a side effect from the medicine?because it sure scares me

There are some pain medications that do have night terrors as a side affect. I was on a medication for migraines that gave me the most vivid nightmares I had ever had. It was listed as one of the uncommon side affects. As soon as I stopped the medicine, the nightmares stopped. I too suffer from chronic pain and fibromyalgia. I have no trouble falling asleep. My problem is staying asleep. I have found that a dark room helps and not being able to see the clock when I wake up.

First the pain...I have been fighting mysterious head issues since 1998 (severe head pressure 24/7 and occasional "seizures" that feel as though an extreme electrical charge has discharged in my brain and then travels throughout my body). As a result, I am assigned to take 2 prescriptions nightly to sleep in addition to an additional migraine pill and/or sleeping pill "when needed". I say "assigned" because I am at tremendous odds with myself currently and I seem to go through these phases often. With the obvious exceptions above aside, I consider myself a very healthy 45-year old man. As such, I detest the fact I require medication to sleep (an act I still consider to be a very basic human function). It is not a concern with side effects at all, which are minor and few. Instead, I feel guilty for keeping medication in my body. So just as the blog here has asked, I ask myself how I can accomplish sleep without the medication. I use a sound soother for white noise, a knee pillow and down pillow for comfort and have even added a new unique twist... I wear a ski-type hat to bed every night. I have found covering my ears has added to comfort because it blocks me hearing my own heartbeat on my pillow (through my ear - something that has only added to frustration sleeping at times). As a bonus I can pull it down over my eyes any time I want an eye shade! Still, if I skip my medicine I cannot sleep due to the head pressure and I end up feeling terrible because of the lack of rest. Therein lies my inner struggle - feel badly ABOUT myself for relying on medication to sleep or feel physically bad for not sleeping (and endangering my health further by limiting my sleep and not feeling rested enough to exercise)?

Pain meds have a strange effect on me. They make it so I can't sleep. Even OTC stuff does this. So I have to choose between pain or sleep. If I want sleep it has to be from medication because the pain is just enough to prevent sleep without it.

For the person who feels guilty for meds, please don't. I also suffer from ruptured discs, have had back surgery, fibromyalgia, and chronic & acute pain. I finally realized if I stayed with the meds on time I did much better.
On sleep, try a self relaxation. Begin at the top of your toes and tell them to relax. Continue with each part of your body until you come to your head. Remember to include each part of the head. I have done this often and it does help.

To Roger Sessor for ideas with sleep help......A friend of mine has also had numerous back surgeries leaving him with definite sleep concerns. He has a zero gravity chair which takes virtually all the pressure off his back and I imagine he sleeps in it often if not always.

For myself I have pain concerns from rectal cancer surgery but ironically found relief from an ancilary condition of sleep apnea.
The use of the CPAP device has significantly increased my quality of sleep. That I received CPAP therapy after my cancer treatment I can testify that getting help for my sleep disorder has also helped me deal with my cancer recovery.

Sleep deprivation can make pain and dealing with pain much worse than if you are getting good quality sleep. Sleep disorders are insidious because the person who has them is generally the last to know.
-----If you can't go to sleep or can't sleep through the night, you need to have a sleep study.------
I am a Registered Respiratory Therapist and am working as a Sleep Technician. The majority of our patients either say they don't think they have a problem (their spouse or doctor has asked them to have a study), or they "know" what is wrong (they have allergies that affect their breathing; the stresses of daily life won't let them relax; and a dozen other reasons for poor sleep)
Everything except sleep apnea.
It is difficult to believe that one could have severe breathing problems and not be aware of it, but I see it every night! I have tested physicians, nurses, etc, all with a deep knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and disease processes, and when they were diagnosed with sleep apnea they were totally shocked.
With sleep apnea, you have decreases or pauses in your breathing that cause your blood oxygen level to drop. This causes your tissues to scream for more. Your heart has to work harder to pump the the blood that just has a trace of oxygen left in it. But your heart doesn't have enough oxygen either. You might remember from your higschool biology that this is not a healthy state for any organ to be in. This can happen hundreds of times a night, night after night. This puts considerable stress on your heart and can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, congestive heart failure, and even plays a part in other diseases like diabetes.
A sleep study is simple, non-invasive, and can tell you a great deal about the way you sleep.
As a sleep professional I have an advantage over most of my colleagues: I also have sleep apnea. So I speak from experience as well as training.
No matter how sure you are of the reason for your poor sleep, go to your doctor and ask to have a sleep study. It could improve your quality of life, and even help you live longer.
Some states don't regulate sleep centers and they can employ people with no medical background at all. A hospital or university affiliated center will require more education, experience, and even a license in a related field. Don't be afraid to ask them about this.
Always inform your doctor of any problem you are having that may be related to your medication. Using a sleep aid may be helpful once in a while, but it is not good to use one all the time.
Snoring is the most recognized sleep problem, but you don't have to snore to have sleep apnea. Getting the diagnosis is the first step toward getting the rest you need.
The only for sure helpful treatment is CPAP. Constant Positive Airway Pressure. Yes, it is a machine, and you have to wear a device when you sleep. (But only when you want to breathe!!) This usually stops the snoring, and you will feel much better. But these things are just nice side effects. The reason you want to use the CPAP machine is to protect your heart and brain.
If I had to grab one thing from my home and run, it would be my CPAP machine. There have been many improvements made in the equipment in the past few years. And with a the help of a kowledgable tech like me, anyone can find a system they can learn to use.
Knowledge is strength. I think that everyone should have a sleep study a few times in your life. It constantly amazes me that people can function with severe sleep apnea and not have a clue!
So, I look forward to seeing you some evening at work. Just bring your jammies and your favorite pillow and you are set.

Doug,

I can relate to your problems ! Do you suffer, or have you suffered from Sinus problems (allergic rhinitis) in the past?

Has anybody suggested to you that your "seizures" may be muscle spasms, or Spasmodic-Dysphonia?

Andrew (46 year old male - UK)

Debbie, (RRT)

I have been provided with a CPAP machine, but it would appear that there are 2 different types, variable, and fixed pressure?

When using the variable pressure machine I seem to get a better nights sleep tham when I use the fixed pressure machine. THe fixed pressure machine is like sticking your head our of a moving car window ! hence I seem to toss and turn and try to strange myself with the supply pipe!!!!!!!!!!

Any suggestions / recommendations

when some one has an actual night terror they usually dont even realise they do it. there's nothing wrong when they wake up, the only way they know is by some one telling them about it, even then they dont remember.

And now it seems that a broken bone that I incurred years ago is now starting to hurt as well.. Normal? Not? I dont know. It seems that is what just my neck, now it going down to my shoulder and down the arm that was broken. Now I am in constant pain, from neck, shoulders and arm!!!

I've had shoulder and neck injuries. I frequently have pain down my arms and into my thumbs. I met a dr. once at a party and said I need to come see you about pain in my thumb. He looked at me and said the problem isn't in your thumb- it's in your shoulder. They call it deferred pain... but I'm telling you, it feels like a sprained thumb it hurts that much at times. But, when the shoulders are worked on- the thumb does feel better. Let the neck heal.

It helps to know that other people wrestle with chronic pain and sleep problems. Like many others, my most severe pain stems from migraines and back / neck / abdominal problems.

The first 10 years, I was put on increasingly stronger pain medicines and anti-inflammatories. I developed stomach problems and other side effects. Since then, I have used medicines as sparingly as possible, keeping the strongest pain meds (hydrocodone 10) for the most severe bouts of pain.

Last summer I started treatment with a Pain Management Clinic where I learned that daily use of pain medicines and Transcutaneous Electro Neuro Stimulation(TENS)units can cause the body to become used to them; the medicines and TENS units then lose their effectiveness. I am having better success by alternating medicines (cyclobenzaphrine and ibuprophen) and using the TENS unit every other day.

I try to continue to function and use a 'proportioned response' to pain. This means using more frequent, but lower doses of meds at lower levels of pain instead of waiting until I hurt so much I can't function at all. This approach also helps me maintain more of my independence, especially being able to drive. If the pain is severe, I take only 1/4 of a tablet if I will be somewhere for at least 2-3 hours. If I don't have to drive for 4-5 hours (and the pain calls for it), I take 1/2 tablet. I write down when and how much pain medicine I take.

I also try to focus on: avoiding any known range-of-motion triggers, being very careful when lifting / carrying, reducing overall stress (especially learning to say no to tasks that overburden my limited time and energy levels).

To help prevent / reduce migraines, I avoid glare and I wear sunglasses indoors when under fluorescent lights. Noise and vibration can also contribute to migraines.

Unfortunately, there isn't much a person can do about weather changes; decreased barometric pressure = less oxygen in blood which worsens muscle spasms. This is why so many people with chronic pain feel better when the barometric pressure is up (more oxygen in blood to ease muscle spasms). The last bit of information was also learned at the Pain Management Clinic.

Another thing that has helped me is trying to keep nausea / vomiting under control. This reduces the effects of dehydration which can make pain even worse. When the home remedies like ginger, crackers, Sprite, etc stopped working, an ER doctor gave me Prochlorperazine Maleate to use (again, as little as possible).

I have finally begun to get some better relief after 20 years by also using a variety of alternative treatments. I have used deep tissue massage for about 4 years. It helps provide stress relief and can improve the immune system by helping stimulate the lymphatic system (the 'trash' collectors of the body).

Through the Pain Management Clinic, I am learning more biofeedback techniques. If you doubt the possible benefits of biofeedback, ask yourself why Yoga and Lamaze lessons teach about breath control.

The Pain Management Clinic is also using trigger point injections and Accupunture. I was very surprised when I got pain relief between the spine and right shoulder blade for the first time in 15 years from the Accupunture procedure.

I realize many people may not be able to afford some or all of these things, but I believe most people can benefit from learning some techniques on their own (through their local library, etc) and through local Chronic Pain Support groups. Pain Management Clinics are finally becoming more accessible.

I also recommend all veterans check with their local County Veterans Service Office to see if they qualify for benefits. I am a disabled veteran. I pay for some treatment myself (like the massage therapy), but also receive care through the Veterans Administration (including the Pain Management Clinic).

Doug, Please see a neurosurgeon. I too had pressure and headaches. A cat scat found that the ventricles in my head were extremely oversized which meant that the fluid was putting the pressure on my brain. Then I had more test, an MRI with contrast, which was the only test to show I had a non cancerous tumor called an "acoustic neuroma". After they took that out The headaches are only if I bend over for too long but the pressure is gone. I don't want to scare you but it took me years to finally get it taken care of

I have ordered a few Japanese Bamboo Flute CDs and play them at night and it helps tremendously getting to sleep. My doctor has also had me taking Trazodone which has 2 good effects at night, it helps the pain meds work better and induces sleep. At first I had drug 'hangovers' from it but they disipate over time.

Help! My mate has strong muscle spasms in his shoulders and arms
(even the legs) during the night.
No pain as he had no knowledge of this 'night fights' as I call them.

These go on for a hour or more with little let up. He sleeps as I dodge the big arms and shoulders.

What is going on? No injuries, no
medical problems that we know of.
He does work out at the gym at least five days a week. However, he has
been limited recently due to bursitis of one elbow. Could that
be a problem... not working out. He is quite muscular at 63.

Help would be appreciated.

I’m 42 years of age and I've been suffering with a severe back issue since 1994. In 1997 I lost use of my left leg and then in 1999 I started losing use of both legs. I had two herniated disc and one bulging. The herniated discs were located between the L-4/L-5 & L-5/S-1. The bulging disc was located between the L-3/L-4 vertebras. I got use of my left leg back in 1997 and again was able to walk again in 1999. I had no insurance so I took it upon myself to do my own physical Therapy. Walk.... Just walk and that was it. I had to have my operation in 2000 and this time I did have insurance but of course lost my job position, again ended up with no insurance for Physical Therapy and Illinois SSI# Disability refused me twice. The surgery consisted of a Laminotomy and laminectomy & Discectomy (also called open discectomy) w/ no fusion.
I lasted until 2006 when I started having problems with my feet and then w/ my Glut & Hamstring muscles having spasms. This in turn caused my doctors to put me in for an MRI which came out that my herniated discs and the bulging disc was back again along with a second bulging disc which was located between the L-2/L-3. I went through physical therapy from Oct 2006 up to Dec 2006 right before Christmas. On New Years Eve weekend, Dec 30, 2006 I went to reach for a bag when my back popped. I went down for the count and landed on the floor. There was no one home because I was house watching for my Brother & his wife while they were gone on vacation. I managed to pull myself together and drive 25 miles to get home and walk up two flights of stairs and lay directly on the floor.
In turn, after the Holidays I had to undergo another MRI in Jan. 2007 in which the report and my doctors stated that they didn't seem to see any significant change from my previous MRI that I had done in Oct. 2006. Again, I went through 12 more weeks of PT and my back condition drastically started to decline. I wasn't sleeping; I was filled with Vicodine 500mg 8 times per day, Tizanidine 2mg 2 times per day, and Lyrica 75mg 1 times per day. It finally came down to it that the doctor and Physical Therapist weren't able to do anymore for me except recommend another back operation which they were to fuse my vertebras and perform another Laminotomy and laminectomy & Discectomy (also called open discectomy). My surgery was scheduled for April 4, 2007. I lost a lot of weight within two weeks because all I can do was lie on my back with two pillows under my right leg along with self medicating myself to knock myself out because of the pain being so extreme that it was like someone pulling my leg from my body while I was still awake.
After having the surgery, I had awoken to my Primary Surgeon looking at me telling me the operation was successful and we fixed your back but just to let you know...... that your back was broken. I had a fractured Vertebra and a broken Lamina in my back. The Lamina that was broken was crushing my L-5 Nerve root and in turn was causing the server pain.
I've had gone through the back brace, the walker, the crutches, and the cane and now try to keep myself balanced long enough not to fall down the two flights of stairs that I have to walk up & down. I’ve asked my Surgeon as to why hadn’t they caught the fracture & broken Lamina from the last MRI and all the answers I get is these things don’t show up on MRI’s, CAT Scans or X-Rays sometimes. My Primary Surgeon and his assistant had put me through Physical Therapy for a couple of months after one month from my operation and then decided to put me through a “Work Hardening Program” in October 07’. My Surgeon told me that they’ll start me off slowly and then progress with my lifting more & more. He told me that there will be days that I will be in pain but that I will over come this because the muscles, the tendons and the Titanium that is now in my back has to heal along with working again along with the muscles in my back.
Well, the first week of my work hardening program they started me off lifting 25-30 lbs. right off the bat. I was able to lift it but then the following weeks turned out to be three weeks of continuous nights of sleepless nights or medicated nights that would just not make me function well at all the following days. I was declining again with my back issue and PT Work Hardening slowly started decreasing my amount of lifting and exercises. On my 3rd week of work hardening my right side of my back along my appendix area was so sore that my PT ordered that I go and see my Primary Doctor because he didn’t believe that it was back related and the muscles that I was claiming were hurting me had nothing to do with the area in which I was operated on. My PT thought I was having an appendix attack.
I went to my primary doctor; he checked me out and had ordered a CAT scan immediately. Let it be known that my primary doctor was left out of any of my information for my back surgery because all he does is push pills that I consider Band Aids for the illness instead of fixing the illness. I went for the CAT scan that same day and of course, it came out negative. My appendix, Colon, Pancreas, and no ruptured hernia in my intestines were showing. I went and seen my Primary Surgeon 4 days later who in turn pawned me off to his Assistant who has the bedside manner of a Dog that hasn’t eaten for a long time and looks at you while you have a plate of food in your hand. My primary surgeons assistant tells me that I have to go for another CAT scan at their Hospital to make sure there is no damage to my discs or Hardware, then states to me that PT Work Hardening is very brutal and some can’t handle it so he stopped my “Work Hardening Program” and that he going to order a work assessment to find out where I stand as far as it goes to getting me back to work.
One thing I have to ask is, why did my primary doctor send me to a Work Hardening Program after telling me that they’ll start me off slow but in turn they didn’t, push his assistant off on me at the last minute who didn’t have a clue that I’m no longer considered an employee at my job but just “Inactive” and then has the gall to tell me that I’m going to have to start thinking about a Desk Job, and then put me through another CAT scan which all he could have done was request the CAT Scan from the place I had it done at the first time? These are doctors who have went to school and we pay thousands upon thousands of dollars to, along with paying into insurance companies that don’t give a hoot because everything in the state of IL. is coded when it comes to them getting billed or paid..
It just isn’t my back that is keeping me from sleeping but it’s also my physiological attitude due to the stress of doctors using me as if I’m their Lab testing dummies. Pills being distributed to me along with just having more back injections this last Monday before Thanksgiving and Steroids along with Cortisone shots that are making me not sleep and want me to think that I can pull the balls off a charging Rhino. Excuse me for my expression but my system doesn’t know whether it’s coming or going. I was supposed to go for a sleep test 6 weeks after my operation. What good would a sleep assessment be if I’m under a vast majority of pills that either will knock an elephant out or injections that will make a human think he can take down a T-Rex? I know I have sleep Apnea but my insurance isn’t going to cover it. I’ve maxed out and all my money is gone. My brother has decided to move in with me along with changing everything to his standard of life and not my needs, my Landlord passes on and her daughter takes over with the well being of saying she’s selling the place, my attitude on life is I don’t care anymore because everyone can go to hell because that’s where everyone is at anyway and if I sound like I’m feeling sorry for myself than that’s fine also because neither one of you can or will help me due to my illness unless my pockets are bulging with money and I’m considered some movie star or some asshole politician who the majority of our money goes to anyway and he’s pretty happy that Thanksgiving was full filling and that he can buy his kid a $50,000.00 Lexus and able to find the finest doctor in the world.
Errgggg!!!!!,
Meanwhile, people like us suffering due to sleep deprivation, pills being slammed down out throats by our doctors [Uppers & Downers] and telling us that this should help when really our minds are set to try anything because were so darn desperate to getting ride of the issue at hand. I have removed myself from all medication because I’m a nervous wreck and something is not right or I wouldn’t be feeling this way.
I went back to school to learn a different trade from working in a Factory since 1983 and doing physical Labor. I’m now an IT Technical Support Specialist with an Associates Degree who thought back in 2000 that I wouldn’t have to worry about physical labor anymore because I was again told that I needed a “Desk Job” by a second physician and that it seems that everyone has this bright idea that an IT Specialist only sits behind a desk. NOT TRUE!!!.... In this field I have Drove a Trucks, lifted approximately 300-350 PCs & 17” CRT Monitors on a daily basis, climbed over and under desks to hook up PCs, walked up to three blocks carrying, pushing or pulling equipment, sat for short periods of times troubleshooting software/hardware issues on PCs, picked up and relocated printers along with carrying large amounts of paper and FRU Units for fixing PCs and Printers. I can’t upgrade my job skills to a position where I can just sit behind a desk because I’m $63,000 in debt for not being able to pay off my tuition for the first loans for trying to improve my career so I didn’t have to do physical labor anymore. I should have went into being a Lawyer or a Politician but I’m too honest and it seems that being honest in this country is wrong and you will not survive if you don’t lie. I was actually told by the SSI Disability Dept. of Illinois in a letter stating that I as long as I was able to move my arms that I wasn’t considered disabled. The second refusal I was told I can go and be a Car Salesman and that I’m not considered disabled either. Well, guess what, maybe I should be an American and stand up for my rights along with all yours and start wheeling my sorry ass down to Washington and start hoping the American Citizen will start realizing that we are considered by the US Government as just a bunch of pigs, losers, and banks accounts for those who are rich, steal from us, and the ones that keep telling us that Americans aren’t treating the illegal immigrants right and that they should have benefits while allowing them to fly their flags in our country.
Do you think the soldier that was taught to fight for America is right now carrying the countries Flag that he’s fighting against and not the American Flag? Get real people, the government that we once trusted has ignorantly placed themselves above all the people who have put them in office and arrogantly decided to push us, “The United States of American Citizens” off to the side so they can make more money, be more greedy and leave us homeless without any kind of help in insurance or hospitalization. This is the reason why I don’t sleep, because stuff like this runs through my head because I hold such a harsh resentment against the ones who said they will help us when all they’re doing is pushing us aside without any regret or remorse. America is a country where the people use to stick together, not the government. If it wasn’t for us, the American People, then there would be no America and the richest country in the world in money but we would be the poorest in attitude too each other and in helping your next door neighbor or the old person trying to cross a busy street would not happen. Wow, did I go on a wild Tirade, I guess I need more medication huh? Get Real……… No more meds so I can get my shit back together again because the American Government doesn’t want to help an American but only non-Americans. My heritage is Polish & Bohemian but if I go to Europe they’ll still consider me an American and nothing else. It seems on all job applications they want to know what Caucasian you are, put down “Other” and in the line that describes what “Other” means or is, put down “American”. Just because you’re heritage or descendants [Grandmother & Grandfathers] from a different country came to the U.S. your still an “American” and nothing else. If you go back to your country and state that you’re not an American, then you’re a traitor and should no longer be allowed to come back to America because it should be considered “Treason”. After all, you took our money, our knowledge and our rights away from us. That’s why I don’t sleep because doctors fill us up with medications and don’t treat the real issues at hand. It’s Physiological and we Americans are over worked, underpaid and pushed aside just to benefit someone who wants to piss and moan that I’m not Politically Correct, a CEO, Government Politician or other Non-American Pocket book is too little for their children in another country. Have a Merry Christmas & yes I said “Merry Christmas” because “In God We Trust” and this is America. I’m an American and I fight for the American People who have worked hard with their own hands to make America, not for those who feel it’s necessary to take from them who had worked so well to build it. We the Americans are the Government and those who we voted on and are supposed to represent us are making America look very bad.

I have to agree. If you're not 65 or over, you're sunk. I'm diabetic and could never take care of it if it wasn't for being over 65. The meters aren't the problem, it's the testing strips which are $1.00+ a strip. In this country it's all about the buck. Greed every way you turn. Our politicians run for the lifetime benefits they can get, not for the people. At the Dr. office,it's how many people they can herd thru, not the health issues of the pt. Cattle at an auction is the method for cash flow. What a shame.I'm just lucky to have a good insurance that is premium free and $5.00 an office call. If we get universal health care, we're doomed. Voting for any politician that doesn't offer U H C is my goal, nothing else. How many Vets are homeless and no care. America is a disgrace anymore and our politicians don't give a dam. It's their benefits and glitzy way of life. There's no middle class anymore.I have to pay $25.00 for a specialist,$50.00 for emergency room, $135.00 a day up to 5 days and nothing over and beyond that. Pretty good insurance and praying we don't get it lost to U H C. I have constant pain in my left foot from a really bad sprain four yrs. ago and a broken shoulder 20+ yrs. ago nad now I have excruiating pain all the time in both. I also have bad insomia not only due to pain. I'm luck if I get 3 hrs. sleep a night and you can't live on sleep meds. Where do I go to get help on my foot? No one seems to be really interested in getting to the basis of it, just use pain meds. My mind never stops. How do you go to bed and not think? I'd be a great sleep study lab patient but no one has ever suggested that. I can see where my knees bothe me as I've been on them forever in a boat being a liscensed fishing guide all my life so they aren't really the problem. It's my foot. HELP!

My 3 year old son just had surgery and was put on a pain killer. Ever since he has been put on it, he half wakes screaming and crying and takes a very long time to calm him down. I thought that it could have been the medicine and I'm glad to know that we figured out the cause.
Thanks for the help!

Please investigate Aromatherapy.... I know it sounds to simple to believe but.... I know from experience, both mine personally and my clients reports that Lavandula Angustafolia - pure Essential Oil of Lavender makes a difference. I use it diluted 1 (one) drop to 20 drops of carrier oil like Almond or Evening Primrose or Borage Seed or best yet, Rose Hip seed oil. Rub this into the temples for sleep, on a muscle for spasms, on a bruise for pain. There are other even stronger oils for sleep but start with Lavender.

Sleep is problem for this 24/7 in pain with hip and back, both severe since I can remember. Take Norco 10/325 10 pills per day and still cant sleep at night. Nightmares, wake up totally wet with sweat, breakthru pain that Methadone wont control. Why is it that the only way to bring the pain back into control with the Norco daily is to go to the ER, have an intravenous drip of Morphine plus a shot of Demoral 4 hours after the drip to bring it down. During this time of the breakthru by BP is through the roof due to the pain, they have done testing, plenty of it so they know it is real, even the veinagram where they put the contrast dye in your blood system and when they put under this special machine you can see the blood is rushing to my hip and back in the areas where the damage is done, blood runs to trauma, it is a crazy life. Drugs have no affect on my thinking anymore, like taking vitimins. I wish I could live a normal life instead of one where it seems I should be stoned but sober as hell and still its there, ready to get me any minute.

I have been getting migraines for many years and I never know what triggers them for sure. Today i was at my siater's and we decided to play some cards. We turned her light on and it is a round flourescent light about 12inches in diameter. In less than 10 minutes I started to get my little lighting image in my eye. Within 5 more minutes I was in a full fledged Migraine. I am Positive my migraine was caused by the lighting and only the lighting.
