Sports Injuries
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Sports injuries can occur at any age. It is amazing how some people have such passion for a game that they will endure pain and injury just for the opportunity to play and keep playing.

Repetitive injuries can take a toll, leaving people in chronic debilitating conditions as they live beyond their ability to compete. When people do not allow themself time to heal properly and completely, they risk re-injury and/or prolonged healing. Re-injury or delayed treatment can lead to permanent damage. In extreme situations, joint replacements may be necessary. Is it worth it? For the athlete the answer is probably a resounding "yes".

But just when is enough -- enough?

I have been involved in baseball all my life. I played for 31 yrs starting at the age of 5. I developed pain in my throwing arm while in college, back in the mid 1970's. Over the years, I had 98 trigger point injections and 3 surgeries in and on my left shoulder. The last surgery took 5 hours instead of the Dr. expected, 2hrs. Recently(2 monts ago), I was umpiring a game and had to leap over a ball that was hit towards me. I came down quite hard on my right leg and it was sraight, not bent at the knee. I landed completely flat-footed on my right foot.
I could not get the pain to go away after about 6 weeks so I went for an x-ray. The results showed a hairline fracture at T-11, along with some jamming of the disks. I have tried lap swimming and other exercises to no avail. I know that NSAIDs would help but I am precluded from using them because I have Grade 3 Chronic Kidney Disease with a GFR of 60-65. Actually, borderline Grade 2 to 3. For the past 9 weeks I have slept a total of 20 hrs. I cannot get comfortable regarless. I have alway been a very outgoing, patient, easy going, slow to anger and a person with a healthy sense of humor. In the past 9 weeks, whether it is due to pain, lack of sleep or, both, I have become the HULK. I am irritable, lash out at people and seem to be angry all the time. Everything now seems to get on my nerves when nothing used to. I do not even like being near myself. I hope this pain diminishes pretty soon.
If I stand, after about 30 minutes, my lower back and hips hurt and if I sit, after about 15 minutes, I hurt in the middle-right portion of my back. The only relief I get is when I am lying down but still cannot get comfortable to sleep. And when I do decide to turn onto my side or, off of my side and onto my back, it seems to take a minute to do so. I am 50 yrs old and up until 9 weeks ago, never experienced any pain whatsoever related to my back. It is almost as bad as a tooth ache, ever present and a constant reminder that something is not right.

I'm in high school and I've been running cross country and track since Jr. High. I'm not the best on the team, but I do try hard. And recently I've developed this pain in my leg. I've talked to my health teacher and he said that I might have hurt a ligament (seeing as I like to "twist" and "turn" a lot). The pain has been getting worse and worse for about two weeks, but I don't want to stop running. Part of me thinks that I would look like a baby if I complained to my coach about my pain, but the other half is starting to worry. I don't know what to do! So basically, this is why I've been on WebMd lately, and happened to look at this article. I understand how some people look at others and say, "Why would you keep on going if it hurts?" But the answer is simple. We do have passion. I would even go as bold to say that some should be admired for their courage.

My husband was hit by a snowboarder in Colorado 3 weeks ago, and his ribs were broken. He has had several x-ray and doctors confirm he has broken ribs, but he cannot seem to get rid of the pain. He is on pain killers and sleeping pills, buts wakes during the night with the pain. He can't work or even eat because the pain killers make him sick at his stomach. He sits in a chair most of the day, works for only short spells, and seems to be getting worse, as far as his pain is concerned. What should we try next? He says he feels as if his heart has been torn from his chest and he has constant burning pain. The doctors assure us his heart and lungs are fine.

I use to be an athlete. I played soccer with a dented thigh from getting kicked so hard. I pitched softball with what I thought was mud on my fingers but it turned out to be blood blisters when I looked at it. I bruised my ribs diving on a soccer ball as a goalie. I nearly tore my achilles tendion sliding into second and twisted my other ankle so badly the doc wasn't sure how it didn't break. Every time I either continued playing or came back sooner than recommended.
I tried indoor soccer again yesterday for the first time in years. My lungs still hurt from all the physical activity I have deprived myself of these past few years. My legs hurt, my arms hurt, my back hurts...I'd play again today if I had the chance because I have missed the pain associated with physical activity. That feel-good kind of pain that means you did something hard, exciting and fun. Can't wait to experience that high again. Why do people put themselves through this? Because they are athletes. I use to be an athlete and can't wait to be again!

I fell off my horse a month ago and was a little sore in my back about halfway between my spine and my side (where I think my ribs are?). A day later, I was sitting in bed and made a small, normal movement and it felt like something popped where I was sore in my back ribs. Since then in certain positions it feels like something is popping or crackling near my ribs. My sister felt it for me and said a small bump actually popped up in my skin for just a second. Any idea what is going on?

My 11 year old daughter is very active in sports. One of her ankles pops when she walks. She tells me at times that it feels like it catches and almost won't pop. Is this something that needs to be checked out?

I was playing flag football and I went up for a catch in the corner of the endzone and i landed with my elbow on the bottom of my ribs. When i got back to the dorm I went to the bathroom and my urine was red(blood) I went to the doctor and took a catscan and they found that i had sists on my kidneys and either i punctured one and thats why i was bleeding or i bruised my kidney. is it ok to drink?

high school runner
I also ran cross country in high school and junior year had pain issues, icing my leg after almost every practice throughout the season. after not placing in sectionals, keeping us from going to state I went to the doctor. x-rays showed nothing, but a bone scan showed a 13" stress fracture in my femur which I had been running on for months and probably would have gone away with a little mid-season break and water rehab. get it checked before it puts you in crutches or like me you limp just a little when the weather changes

Flag footballer--Do not drink!
Blood in your urine means you're bleeding internally. An injured kidney is not to be taken lightly--it is a severe injury. Do not drink until fully healed. And, talk to your Dr before taking over-the-counter pain killers such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

I've been playing football for my highschool and ive been developing alot of injuries which i thought would go away in a few weeks but they havent a few examples are about a month ago i hurt my shoulder a few days before a game and then after the gamer it hurt so bad i couldnt even move my arm. i went to the doctor but they said no broken bones and i most likely just have a stresses or partially torn membrane on 1 of the 4 joints in the shoulder and he recommended a few wees off, i took 3 weeks off and it didnt go away so i tried to sit it out and its been 2 months now and its still killing me to put preassure on it. Another one s my thumb, this is one of my most recent ones. i hurt it only a week ago in practice and then fell on it later abot 6 days ago. it only hurts if if i make a fist or extend it into the hitchhickers thumb position.which i cant even extend all the way. and i think my most serious injury is on i aquired only 2 days ago in which i was running and my foot got caught my body ket going but my foot stayed behin i ended up falling on my foot and my knee popped. now when ever i bend my knee all the way i have a really sharp pain and a pop that occurs without fail. and theses arent even half my injuries. although im in constant pain on my feild i still push on. after all this i just have to suspect theres more to these injuries than i expected. ive even been sleeping for around 12-3 hours a day and i still wake up tired. this is a big thing for me because i can normally be fine with just a few hours of sleep. should i ask my doctor to get x-rays for all of these pains that ive had for more than 3 weeks? should i wait it out longer?

I fell off my horse on saturday and landed on my left side, I don't think I hit my head, it happened really fast. I got right up but my ears were ringing and my eyes were a tad blurry for about 10 minutes. I had no other concussion symptoms, but I don't know if I should go to the doctor or not. I took some ibuprofen, and finished my events and was ok, I'm really sore today though! So should I see a doctor or wait a couple more days to see how I feel?? Thanks

i was playing football for our guys "turkey bowl" (pickup football on thxgiving) when i was tackled pretty roughly running pretty fast and came down hard on my right shoulder. there was sharp pain any time i extended my arm away from my body and have developed a lump on the top of the shoulder. im 95% sure its seperated and am concerned about how serious of an injury it is. i have no health insurance so have not gone to a doctor. the pain has already subsideded quite a bit but there is still some bruising at the top of the shoulder in the crease between my front delt and pec. if i were to leave it seperated would i be able to ever lift weights again? what about play sports?

I am a 15 year old male, and I am currently in basketball. In a scrimmage, I collided with a player, who is considerably taller and heavier than me, his knee cap to the side of my knee, below kneecap. I could not walk very well after, but kept running, and now I cannot lift my foot right or left without pain in my calf, running from ankle to knee. I can feel the line of muscle hurting, and it hurts to the touch also. Should I ice it, use heat, or just rest? And what would have caused a muscle pain like this after a collision?

I am a 19 year old rower and I have suffered from a knee injury for years. The drive to compete and win is so strong within me that I will never quit until I am no longer able to function. I overlooked the whole aspect of getting it examined and treated, and I wish I had done it sooner. I would strongly recommend that everyone with some sort of joint pain from a re-occurring injury get it checked out immediately. I waited for about five years just thinking that it would just go away, and now I will have to have a knee replacement sometime in the near future. There is a fine line between not wanting to quit and being smart about your injuries. Sports is about pushing your potential, but you have to do it in a smart way.

I'm only 15, and for a long time my right shoulder has been hurting. It was an occasional thing until this past summer. It has become more and more constant. Nothing helps. I have tried, heat, ice, and Motrin. I went to my doctor and already got an X-ray. It showed that my bones are clear of any injury. It hurts in any direction, only when it hurts. I don't have to do anything to make it hurt. I could sleep on my left side and it would still hurt. I ma in Tae Kwon Do, but its not like I favor either arm, and I don't just use it when I'm in class. I have pretty good posture, and I am average weight. I don't think I put any strain on it at all. Everytime I lift it about 2 inches it pops near my collar bone and my shoulder joint. Also around the inner middle shoulder blade. I can hear it, and feel it, but I can't see it pop. I know something is not right.

Ok I was playing football the other day. When i caught the ball I got tackled. But my leg twisted and ankle did'nt. Then when I fell my knee went under me. But to get to point I could'nt put any weight on it for about 2 to 3 hours after the injury occured. Then it still hurt alot and i could'nt run, twist it, or stand tip-toed. Now as I write this, I still can't do those things. But I'm 14 and I've never broke a bone that I knew about. So I came here to see what everyone thinks.

so im 14 years old, and i love playing tennis. im on my school's team, and the other day at practice, i was just hitting the ball around, then i went to turn and run, but my foot stayed and my knee popped. it made a sound, but i didnt really think anything of it. the next day (yesterday) i was playing very rigorously and i went to do the same thing, and i actually saw my knee bone pop out of the socket. i fell down and on impact, the bone popped back in. i could barely even walk afterwards. my mom took me the doctor and they said that there was fluid in my knee and that i needed to see an orthopedic doctor. the nurse wrapped it up, but im pretty sure he wrapped it too hard, and now i cant walk. it hurts so much when i try to. it really sucks because the doctor thinks i wont be able to play tennis again and that ill have to quit the team. i really wish i had paid attention to the first time it happened, now my knee is a mess. so to anyone who loves their sport and gets injured, even if its the tiniest thing, DONT IGNORE IT.

I play high school softball. in May 2007 i took a hard hit to my right shin about 2 inches below halfway point slightly towards the inside. I had a bruise that went down the inside of my ankle and foot. I had no idea why the bruise was so big. After a while the bruise went away and the only problem was that i could not feel the middle of where the ball had hit my leg (which is still true til this day). Now this year, it is my second year on the winter track team and have been well associated with shin splints. A week after I stopped running I continued to get a shin splint on my right shin. I finally realized that it hurt around the same spot as my softball injury. It hurts when I sit, walk up stairs, jog, or just walk in general. I don't want to go to the doctors if I find that it's just something that may go away by itself because if something is terribly wrong I still want to be able to go to states. I know its not a major injury but I'm not sure if it'll get better or worse. Think I should just ice it?

At 43 I have managed to lose 40 lbs this year by core dancing and Dance Dance Revolution on Play station. I have never looked better not had as tone of a body. I noticed a dent in the top of my right thigh and was concerned that it could be a blood clot however I ahve no pain what so ever. I was at a party with a chiropracter who felt my leg and said it was a tear in the muscle that is irreprable and that I need to stop dancing. This is unacceptable. If I can not dance I will gain my wight back and lose a lot of the social fun I have found. I can not believe there is no treatment for this condition expecially since it causes no discomfort. Any suggestions?

I am 18 and currently in college. Two years ago during a football practice i took a hard shot to the ribs and got the wind knocked out of me. As soon as I could breathe again I got up and continued practice. The rib hurt for about four months and i had trouble breathing for the rest of the season and in gym class. I never saw a doctor or even told my coach and I am not sure if I actually broke the rib or not. Then last year I proceeded to take an errant fastball across my face, breaking my nose and causing internal bleeding. On top of this i nearly tore a tendon in my right arm and have sprained my wrist too many times to count. I feel that there is an invisible force that makes the body ignore pain when there is something to gain.

The middle calf is very sore, but I am able to walk and twist my ankle without pain but if I put pressure on the back of calf with my hand or try to walk up stairs the pain is terrible. It's been a couple of weeks and seems to be getting a little better. But I am unable to walk for a long period of time because my hip starts hurting on the other leg because I am favoring the hurt leg. I am a 16 year old female.
I play basketball, volleyball, and run track.
Last season (06-07) during my first track meet i pulled something in my leg.
I found out later that it was my hamstring. To the day it still bothers me. Track isnt anything special to me. It sucks because for basketball it bothers me. I try and suck it up but sometimes i just cant! Right after the state tourney this year i noticed that my leg would like "pop" out of the socket or something everytime i run. It hurts but i dont feel like saying anything....i guess athletes do have too big of passion to just give up everything for an injury!

please get back to me somebody if you know anything about this injury..thanks

So I used to do track, not a big deal. In track is used to do hurdles which never hurt to do. But when I was in PE we were doing track day which wasn't as fun as it used to be. When we were doing long jump I actually got so/so far. I got 10 feet and 5 inches. And when I landed I landed bending my knees then sprang by a rolled (summer saulted). it kinda hurt especially since we were doing it on really thin grass and hard, dried soil. Then the next time I got 10 feet 8 inches, but my teachers told me that I left a half an inch late and that one didn't count. So I didn't really bother to land right and landed on my side.

That night I was laying in bed and all of a sudden for like an hour my leg was shooting pain back and forth from my Hip to my Knee. I couldn't even move.

And then I had a baseball game a couple days later I was batting and all of sudden my achilles tendon started hurting really badly and I already had a really bad ankle there.

What should I do? Should i hold off going to the doctor or should I go now and see what's up with my knee and ankle?

I would appriciate it if somebody could answer my question.

I was playing basket ball and i was tackled by some kid that wanted my ball. He could have had asked me for it I would have gave it to him. but no he had to be violent, and I broke my wrist. Theres a strange ball that looks like a bone coming out (very painful), but on the x-ray it showed nothing. And then they said it could be some strange liquid. How long will it take to heal?Do I need surgery? What do I need to do? What is that ball that looks like a bone?
