Faith and Healing
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

It is no secret that much of what we think can and does affect how we feel. Attitude, beliefs, faith, spirituality, opinions, emotions all affect us in some way. Many folks rely on their faith during times of distress. Christians have a hopeful and confident faith that is beneficial during these times. Others seek out their source of comfort and often cling to that when they are distressed.

I have often heard it said that God doesn't prescribe medications. God doesn't order tests. God doesn't diagnose or treat and all of these things are true. However, God does oversee what is going on. He has the ability to enable the people who developed the meds that are used for pain syndromes. He has the ability to enable the physicians and surgeons to learn about and experience success in their careers in treating patients. And therefore it is always appropriate to thank God for the accomplishments we achieve and the peace and comfort we feel.

It is reasonable that some folks can not understand what they can not sense. They often have difficulty understanding and recognizing the power of prayer. Faith is what it is and does not require tactile sense to understand, trust and believe.

It is not the same as religion. A person can be religious and lack faith. People can practice rituals and support a doctrine and lack a peaceful, comfortable and trustable faith. They may struggle during times of distress because they lack a lifeline to hold onto.

If you lack faith and feel distressed, if you feel pain and feel all alone, I encourage you to explore your faith. Define it and name the promises and guarantees that bring you peace. And if you can't do so, find someone to help you. Doing so may offer you a sense of comfort and peace as you struggle with your pain and discomfort. Seek out those folks with like faith who can raise you up during those times when you feel down and distressed. Hopefully you will begin to see an improvement in your quality of life!

This is a ludicrous and irresponsible article to have on what is supposed to be a medical site. It totally discredits any other information you provide by making clear your bias and ignorance.

Today perhaps you might lay down your own anger at God for just long enough to feel His love for you. If you were to do that you would understand the relevance of peace to a persons health. There are of course pharmaceutical options available for relieving human pain, but these only seek to mimic the gift of peace available throught the true Healer. Regardless of whether or not you accept this truth, you must however, logically accept that peace (lack of distress) is a part of health. This truth makes it entirely logical and relevant for this article to have been posted on a website regarding and encouraging human health. Have a wonderful holiday weekend, and be blessed. By the way, He really does love you, regardless of how tempted you will be to throw hatred back at me... and Him.

Anonymous #1: This is a blog. Bloggers are allowed to post their own beliefs and thoughts. As for being irresponsible, studies are proving a link between faith, wellness and healing.

As Indie pointed out, faith is not religion, nor is it limited to the christian ideal,

As someone with a Ph.D. in Health Psychology who has studied the link between spirituality and physical/emotional well-being empirically, I am encouraged to see an article discussing the importance of spirituality on a medical site. I think this is definitely a step in the right direction! As for the comment by anonymous #1, I would encourage you to be more open to a new way of thinking. You may be interested in the Mayo Clinic's new book on alternative medicine, which itself references spirituality as important to well-being.

Thank you for posting such a clear presentation of the potential benefits acquired through spiritual understanding. As a Christian pastor for more than 25 years, I have witnessed the power of prayer (meditation) in the advancement of healing. Be assured that some will not be physically healed in this realm, but they will experience peace during their struggle. I appreciate the suggestion to invite others to raise you up during times of distress. There is great advantage in allowing others to give support and comfort. Again, thank you for recognizing that God does work through the thoughts, understanding and action of mere humans. Bless you for saying so!

The brain cannot tell the difference from belief in God, or just plain belief in the amazing ability of the body to heal itself.

To "KNOW" you will become healthy is a proven powerful ally in the healing process. Your body responds to what you truly believe
... if "I'm sick and I will die", then you probably will. If, "My body (or God) can heal this problem and I'm going to help it do it quickly" your outcome has a much better chance of being positive.

    An excellent reference is:
The Wisdom of Your Cells, How Your Beliefs Control Your Biology, by Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D. He discusses at a detail, biological level just how are thoughts influence our bodies, right down to the cellular level.

What one believes effects every area of their life. Positive or negative.

It is impossible for any human being to NOT believe something.

Even the atheist or agnostic must BELIEVE that there is no God, as their assertions certainly cannot be proved.

This ability to believe is ingrained into our very make-up.

The thing that gives those who do believe in God an advantage is that those who do not believe in God, are left only to themselves.

Obviously, the person leaving the first comment has not read the study published in 2000 about intercessory prayer and pain relief in rheumatoid arthritis and spirituality and quality of life in gyn oncology, breast cancer, lung cancer, and renal transplant patients. Yes there are some negative cardiac studies on intercessory prayer, but the pain relief studies have been consistently positive. Patients spiritual needs have to be addressed. (An oncologist)

As a christian, I really appreciate this article. I agree with Indie, about how God oversees and guides the doctors and medical community to help the hurting and sick. I believe He uses medicine, and I have personally experienced His healing power through faih in Him. Thank you for this article.

Pain is such an individual experience...whatever gets you through the difficult time is what a person in pain will do, especially if it appears to be working for them. What I think is distrubing in your blog site is that it appears to be deceptive in it's approach to promoting Christian beliefs, as the answer to medical concerns. Blogger David A. has the best response because the human body is remarkable in repairing itself--one's attitude also helps overcome sickness.

How you feel about the world and your place within it, is as important as the medication or medical treatment that you recieve trying to improve a medical condition. I have had to have 4 surgeries in 2 years for joint problems/birth defects and if my faith in my doctor and faith in my God were not foremost in my mind providing peace and strength, then I would not have had the positive outcome that I did have...after 15 years of chronic pain, in my feet and ankles, I am now pain free!
