An Ideal Pain Management Plan - You Describe!
I was recently asked why if I am a pain specialist, I write about loss, sadness, and other things that don't seem to relate to pain. This question enabled me to discuss the complexities and the interrelationships between physical pain and the many topics I write about.
I view pain in a very broad and comprehensive way. My personal/professional definition of pain relates distress of any kind in some or any aspect of life to the experience of pain. Pain is so much more than just a physical experience. It touches on the biopsychosocial and spiritual aspects of a person's life as well as effecting the life of those close to the victim.
To treat pain, it is vital to explore all of the areas of a person's life and take these into consideration. To prescribe treatment for only one aspect and neglect to investigate the others often does a great injustice to the patient who suffers.
If you were to define an effective treatment approach for victims of chronic pain, what components would it include? Please share your answers and comments on either my Pain Management or Migraine board. I look forward to talking with you!

Ms Cooper-Guzman, I do admire most of your medical knowledge but after reading many pages of your advice on the pain-management boards I am letting you and others know that there are mistakes. Anyone seeking advice regarding pain medication, surgical complications, and anything else relating to their health should never rely on the advice of someone they have not seen as a Doctor or nurse. Accreditations are impressive but being a pain-management patient myself I have seen false information being provided for what appears to be very sick people. Those of you that need this support should be very aware of your conditions and never to replace your own Doctors with anyone on a medical website. Ms. Cooper-Guzman, I think you should let the people on all of the boards know that you are there for support only and to seek REAL medical advice from their own doctors and nurses.

WebMD states over and over again that there is no substitute for in-person diagnosis and advice by a medical provider, and further, that nothing on our site is intended to be a substitute for medical advice.
In the area of pain management, professionals disagree about different treatments and how to manage pain. Disagreement is not error. Ms. Cooper-Guzman takes great pains to verify her information with several sources and is credentialled in her field. Comments posted on her posts are the opinion of the commenter and should be given the weight that any other anonymous opinion would be given.

Just read your post about pain management. I agree w/defintion of chronic pain by my own experiences. I've had back pain since mid 80's and it's getting worse. It affects my physical body as much as my spiritual being because the pain is so bad sometimes that it saps my spirit, morale, and other positive feelings and emotions that are inside me, and turns me into a very negative, self-centered, self-pitying person. I HATE THESE FEELINGS and I hate the pain! Please comment! Thanks.
I am a 50 yr. old man and a chronic-pain patient. I have had pain for most of my life for one reason or another. As of today, the issues are herniated disks in my neck and back, the pain can be horrific at times. I take Morphine Sulfate for pain and Klonopin for the sleeplessness and anxiety that this log term condition usually causes. My comment may not relate to the topic at hand but, I do want to voice my concern for all of us that suffer from this awful condition. I am greatly troubled by the recent surge of teen and young person prescription drug abuse. I am seeing first-hand the result of this behaviour. I now have to produce a valid ID to fill my RX and pick-up my RX. Alot of the recent deaths of the Hollywood spoiled and pampered abusing their drugs are making it hard for those of us that really need these types of meds. I really don't care if Heath and other RX junkies killed themselves while taking these drugs. They, like myself, were instructed by our Drs. on how to use these meds. and the consequenses of misusing them. If their Drs. are star-stuck and give them whatever they want then, the Drs. should be held accountable. I know alot of the Drs. that live in my town are reluctant to prescribe these drugs because of all of the negative coverage. We end up suffering- the patients that really need these meds. and use them correctly and resposibly. This is the real tragedy.

I think stress and pain go hand in hand. I have dealt with chronic pain for several years and see a pain mangement doctor. My pain has gotten worse, but he is not listening. I asked my regular doctor to do mri to see if a change has been noted. They did it and my doctor said I have bulging, one place degeneraative disk another, arthritus, but it looks good to him. I said the why does it hurt so bad, he says I do not know and sent me to Neuro, who wants a lumbar disco-gram, so I am waiting for the pain mangement group I go to, to call and set it up, I see mi doctor monday, and maybe he can get on it. I cannot explain to them that the litocane patches do not help and th norco.neurotin, soma regime is not working now, do you have suggestion as to how I can make hime understand me? I am sure the loss of my husband 6 months ago, and the stress of having to do everything, is not helpful in my pain level, but it is what it is and I really need help.
I am a Iraqi veteran who got hurt when there. It is going on two years since my back injury and just now the medical team I have been seeing is getting me a disco gram. I have been on naractics since the injury, I can not function in every day life either. I also suffer from post tramatic stress disorder, depression, and migrianes. Any help in dealing with these medical conditions would be nice,
