Blast Your Back Fat
Back fat, muffin top, love handles, fat roll or spare tire - call it what you want, but it all adds up to that rather not-so-lovely vision of extra rolls of fat popping up all over your back, from your bra line to your belt line. It's the kind of fat that makes you rethink buying a skimpy top where the whole world can revel in your rolls. Have a look in the mirror at your back while wearing a form fitting blouse or sweater. There's that back fat poking out along your bra strap lines. And how about the rolls at your armpits, and the back fat shelf line above your waist? Not a pretty picture. And, as opposed to the menopot which is seen primarily after age 40 (see my blog post "Minimize Your Menopot"), back fat can occur at any age in men and women, but is worse after the age of 40. So where does it come from?
Back fat is an accumulation of excess fat that occurs due to one or any combination of factors including:

Back fat is an accumulation of excess fat that occurs due to one or any combination of factors including:
- Being overweight or obese at any age (over eating and lack of physical activity);
- Genetics in which even some slender people tend to distribute more of their fat to the back area;
- Ethnicity plays a roll (pun intended) in which some groups tend to pack on back fat more than others;
- Lack of weight training to bring down body fat and increase muscle tone;
- Being over the age of 40 in which the decline of sex hormones affects distribution of fat throughout the body.
So what can you do about Back Fat? Plenty. Here are the "Rules of the Roll" to blast your back fat:
- Make an Action Plan. Sit down and write out your goals. Take measurements throughout your body so you know where you're starting. Take pictures for the visual impact. Create realistic goals and expectations (dropping ½-2 pounds per week is the normal range). The heavier you are to start, the more excess fat you'll be removing. Write down your commitment to change. Journal your progress. Develop a support system to help guide you - like our wonderful weight management board on WebMD.
- Be patient. Back fat is often one of those stubborn places that sometimes takes longer to reduce. Be persistent.
- Get real. If you're over the age of 40, you may not be able to completely eliminate all of your back fat, but, like the menopot, your mission is to minimize back fat.
- Hide it while you remove it. Let's not invite trouble in the form of super tight spandex tops. While you're shedding pounds and getting more fit, try to wear looser, comfortable clothes and toss the muffin topping skinny jeans. There are also great elasticized undergarments that help smooth out the rolls.
- You must do both weight training and cardio to blast back fat. Don't think you can do this with cardio alone. You'll drop some weight, but you need to reshape and redistribute fat and only a combination of weight training and cardio will do that. Lift 2-3 x week and concentrate on building strength and perhaps boosting your muscle mass a bit. Check out my MUSCLE section in Body for Life for Women for easy ways to do this at home gym-free. Check out the WebMD fitness sites for creative ways to strengthen and tone.
- Eat a back fat blasting diet. Physical activity is key, and equally so is what you put in your mouth. There is no one food or beverage that will magically remove Back Fat. Instead it's all about eating a variety of healthy foods every day. Quality: whole foods and lean proteins build the foundation for removing Back Fat. Quantity: watch your portion size. Almost everyone out there is eating too much relative to their age and gender. If you eat too much, you wear it. Read the USDA label and know what a serving size looks like. Frequency: eat every 3-4 hours from breakfast through dinner. Stop eating 2 hours before going to bed. Try to eat your dinner no later than 8-8:30 PM, and keep it lean (veggies, lean protein). Wake up in the morning feeling truly hungry. Check out my MOUTH section in Body for Life for Women for healthy, easy nutrition options. Scroll onto WebMD's wonderful nutrition sites for endless suggestions and recipes.
- Get creative and cross train. No one specific exercise is the ultimate back fat cure. You need to draw from a variety of back strengthening and toning modalities. Mix and change it up every 6 weeks to keep it fresh and challenging. Have some fun and get adventuresome. Take up belly dancing, hip hop or twirl around a ballroom. Ballet is a terrific way to pinpoint back flexibility and strength. Don't forget martial arts, yoga and Pilates. Each uniquely singles out the back for a fat blaster workout.
- Enjoy a win - win. The stronger the back the stronger the abs, and vice versa. You're working the core of the body and what you do for one, helps the other.
Back fat is a fact of life. Don't waste another moment fretting about it. Take action. And remember, here at WebMD, we've got your back!

This article is nothing more than a rehash of known, very common solutions. There is nothing in it that tells me anything new to "blast" my back fat. It's just the same advice of eat right and exercise that every other article that's written by anyone of half a brain will tell us. Shame on you for using sensationalist terms to get me to waste several minutes of my already busy day.
Thank you for the encouraging words and advice that you provide to jumpstart a work out. I liked your article and will pass it to my friends.
I was a little disappointed, too. I don't read very many emails like this... but was hoping to get something more specific... like targeted excercises or specific weight lifting moves. Although more resources were highlighted, I am leary of going on a goose hunt to possibley find more of the same.
blah, blah blah, give me something specific
This email caught my attention but what a disappointment!
I too was disappointed. I came looking for specific things to do such as a specific exercise. What I found was a skinny woman telling me to hide it while I worked on losing it. give me a break
Iam 79 years old and i eat ahealthy diet of veg and protien.
Ikeep as active as i can .
Iam a caregiver for my husband which takes up alot of my time and energy as i do yard and house work as well.Still iam overweight.
What can you suggest i do besides this.
I did not think it was a disappointment, I think it was a very motivating reminder to those of us who may have been sitting on our butts and allowing this to happen to us. Get over it, it was good advice and just get out there and work out, do cardio, lift weights and Yoga. I found that Yoga truly does lengthen your spine and corrects your posture. If you are not standing up straight and your spine is not aligned correctly it will also be noticeable. Take if from me, who got lazy from being overcome with fybromyalgia, if I can start working out, most of the rest of you without a chronic pain condition can also. If you do have a chronic pain condition, exercise helps. No matter how hard it is to start.
I too was excited to see something about Back Fat, a problem that is truly runs in our family,and we are not large people. But due to the facts I am well over 40 am have MS, the 1st known case in our family, what info was given most likly couldn't work for me.
how silly you guys are.
common you are living in 21st century and i m sure we all know that losing weight is not a magic that someone will show you a trick and you will lose your flab.it,s a clear fact eat right do exercise and you will lose it,so better not to expect silly things from the docs.
I agree with those who are not disappointed with the article. There is no magic pill for any type of weight loss. We all know it's eating the right foods and staying active by taking the time to workout. If you don't want to take the time, then learn to live with your weight issues.
I agree with most of the other comments. I taught aerobics for over 7 years and trained by muself after that. Nothing is going to take care of that back fat besides cutting it off. So just go with it ladies. Enjoy what you have and what you are and be glad you do not have some terrible disease like cancer that would take care of the back fat. Enjoy life...
Lift weights, do cardio and be patient? Seriously? That's BLASTING? I'd like to recommend this site but will not, if you continually resort to tabloid-style attention getters. We're smarter than that.
I completely agree with the woman who said "cut it off" or have it removed. Back fat runs in my family from my mother's side. I am the smallest person in my family (107) pounds, yet you would think I would not have about 5 lbs of fat hanging off my back. I have had lipo about 23 years ago, but it came "back". I am looking into something better than lipo, if anyone has suggestions.
I understand why some are upset about the article, but what were they really expecting from it? It is common sense that exercise, nutrition, weights and consistency are the real way to decrease one's weight and body fat.
I understand why the good doc used this title. It worked...it grabbed our attention!
What I like about the article, it contains information some people might not know. I am a fitness trainer who works with indigent clients. Some of those folks really have no clue about fitness or nutrition. Sometimes these articles are all some folks have.
Well here is my two cents worth. I agree that eating right and exercising is good for you and will help you lose weight, but what these so called "Docs" are putting out there are one of the same. they do not give specifics of what type of exercise you can do to work a certain area of your body. This is what most people want to know, not the same old verbage that comes out of every other "Doc" that is just trying to sell crap that they really know nothing about. If you know these specifics then spill and let us have some insight to what really works for those hard to lose areas.
W O W !!!! Just go and do the right thing; and we all know what that is,, Eat right and keep going, dont just sit there after you eat....I think the info. was pretty good.
Unforunately, genetics do play a part. I am very lucky in that I come from a family which tends to be lean, and I am also on the leaner side, do pilates and weight train. I do eat healthy foods, but I admit to eating desserts and bread which are obviously on the "no" list. Can't explain other than say it is a combination of genetics, luck, some good (and bad) dietary habits, and exercise.
I was really hoping to see the exercises on the same page & not have to search. When you say"Blast Your Back Fat" show me immediately, mostof us don't have the spare time to go surfing. Cut to the chase, get to it.
I felt this was an advertisement for her books. There were a few helpful tips, but none we didn't already know.
thanks for the reminder
No one is asking for a miricle, just specific instruction for that particular area. Maybe mention specific exercises! We all know what we are SUPPOSE to be eating!
Doing specific spot training doesn't work. You have to work all the muscles in the area so that they are all strong. Maybe searching the specific areas that were quoted in the article there might be some exercises to help with strengthing the back. Let's face it only one person can work miracles!!
to everyone saying this is a dissappointment to them, really? I'm sure that everyone really knows, that there is no miracle cure for excess fat...it takes hard work and a "want to" attitude...don't get mad at the people who are telling you what you already know...just do it... and quit your whining.
If there were a magic pill, you wouldn't have clicked on the link. Fat didn't suddenly appear and it won't suddenly disappear.
I agree with other posts, it would be nice to see either a slide show on effective exercises, or a list of the top 4 back fat exercises. We all know what we need to do (ie. eat more lean protein, veggies, whole grains) but you also need to exercise. I guess if I lug her book (Body for Life for Women) on top of my head all day maybe I will lose some back fat.
I think that part of the "problem" here is that people have to understand that you cannot spot reduce areas of fat. No single exercise will make your back fat magically disappear-- you need to get active and sweat it off. Sure, you can perhaps tone the muscles underneath a bit (which is imp't in it's own ways), but that still does not do anything for the actual fat. For that, as I am and the docs have said, you have to create a caloric deficit (lower your cals and increase your cals burned). That is why this article doesn't have any specific exercises-- you need to do lots of cardio foremost!!
I am thin and have had back fat my entire life, so I do totally sympathize!!!
For all of you that are so "disappointed and are looking for specifics" look online- apparently you are already on so Google search back work outs and BOOM- all the answers that you were looking for! These articles are too give you motivation and tips... which the site does and if you read the Doc's book- which was ref. you will get all that "specific info" you are complaining that you didn't get- it's a decent book, and article; you can find it at your local library. ENJOY!
Blah Blah..dont waste our time!
There are new cosmetic surgery procedures called "Back Lifts". Back fat runs in my family too, and I am seriously considering this surgery. I am not at all overweight, but I definitely have back fat. Always have, even back in junior high when I was barely 80 pounds (I'm 5'4").
DUH!! No new information here!
I was disappointed too, but the fact is that no matter what these so-called people in the know say, calorie counting is what really counts! I bought a juicer and am eating my vegetables and am hoping to shed the 20 lb I need to fit in my jeans. So far, no cigar.
Did they really just get me to read that email that told me nothing specific about back fat? I must say they were quite clever with the title because that was the only thing that got some of us to read it!
Eat less, move more, as I saw on an SNL skit! It is true. Also, it takes more time to lose the excess than to gain it. No fair! Definitely go on a diet from negative thoughts, as negativity will cling to you in unwanted ways. Definitely a lifestyle change. If you visualize, you can materialize. See yourself in shape, strong, healthy. Affirm this to yourself with daily mirror work. We all have the power to change and be fabulous!
I know this comment will be controversial, but here I go. I am 43, exercise daily, eat right, everything I'm supposed to do and still had the middle fat- back and belly. I had laser lipo, a less invasive procedure done under heavy sedation and it really worked! I still exercise my back and abs, probably even more now because I don't want to waste what I've done.
I find it pathetic that we focus on back fat (vanity) versus health. As long as you are healthy who really cares??!! Would you rather be skinny with no back fat and a disease ridden body or have back fat and be healthy? Please!
You got that right molliebonsai, nothing helpful. I've noticed this lately w/webmd and the emails; there is no correlation between the title and article, getting old.
just to let you know for the future it would be nice if you gave us exercises to do because most of us are over weight an have a problem losing any pounds because we dont know where to start so give something more soild to get us started on
Not sure what all the fuss is about, I thought the article was pretty clear about how to BLAST YOUR BACK FAT...patience and persistance...

I get up and go to the gym at 5:30AM, before hubby and daughter get out of bed ~ that's MY time to workout. If I can't make it to the gym, I flip on the DISCOVERY HEALTH CHANNEL, which has various workouts starting at 6:00 am and going throughout the day and evening. There's also the library of fitness tapes and DVDs I have that I can use at lunchtime or in the evenings...
The key for ME is consistency ~ if I workout daily (even if it's only 30 minutes) I see consistent results. If I slack off and workout 3 days a week, I notice that I don't get the results I want. I want to get back into my size 8 jeans, so I'm willing to make the extra effort work for me in the long run. The suggestions for diet changes are spot on as well ~ I'm diabetic, and I know I need to eat "good" food, and if I eat late in the evening (after 8:00 PM) my bloodsugars are screaming in the morning...it's a matter of lifestyle changes for LIFE, not just a few weeks or months. Make it a priority to make yourself happy with your body ~ either work to change it or accept it as it is. Good Luck !
Wow ok Molliebonsai, im pretty sure everyone knows that diet and exercise will aid in losing weight. However, the fact that the authors provided information with a new point of view, a normal person trying to lose weight, gives that average "Jane" trying to get make his/her goal weight is an excellent methodology. Instead of developing a do this, do that prosective, like a personal trainer or doctor may have. Try looking at things diffently, instead of black and white. Understand that with begin open-minded comes knowledge and success.
No Molliebonsai, shame on YOU for getting an attitude when you didn't find the quick fat fix you were looking for.
Sorry a bunch of you found the article to be a dissapointment, but those of us who actually work hard to lose weight and don't try to look for new fads and strategies to lose the fat and weight were just reminded on how to keep going with our hard work.
It's ashame you wasted several minutes of your already busy day looking for a quick fix Molliebonsai, you could have instead been working out I guess...
I honestly don't know what more people need to read and hear to believe that working out and eating right will help them to lose weight. Just get up and do it already instead of trolling the internet for new, secret, weight loss hints and tips.
One lady says that you cannot get rid of backfat. You CAN, just keep at it and it will melt away. People vary so your results won't be the same.
Sewbizgirl, obviously a few here aren't that smart if they are flocking here looking for a fast fat burning tip and then get upset enough to whine when they dont find what they are looking for...
Eating right and working out/moving more actually does work believe it or not.
I AM doing all...Cardio & Resistance training...Am not overweight HOWEVER the 'BACK' doesn't show me to be a "roll-free" body....
So this article is in fact a great "DISAPPOINTMENT" & the "Blah..blah...blah..." Give some concrete info or don't waste my time!
i am 61, in great shape, with a 23 BMI. i work out constantly. and still the back fat. i think it is just part of the aging process where skin loosens. there is nothing one can do about it. i look at my arms -- the deltoids are prominent, the biceps and triceps are prominent -- yet they are surrounded by back fat. c'est la vie.
