Free Holiday Gift! (Now That We Have Your Attention...)
When we talk about safety during the holidays, we're usually talking about lights on your tree, candles in your window, your mother-in-law's pills on the night table, and other important issues that get a lot of necessary attention this time of year. But there is another kind of safety concern we have at the holidays--Internet safety. That's right. Your kids will spend more time online now that school is in recess. They'll play online with their friends, they'll play by themselves, and hopefully they'll play with you, too. Internet safety, media literacy, whatever you want to call it, it's a huge concern. After all, being online can be...well...addicting! Guilty as charged.
So what's a concerned parent to do?
Well, for one thing, establish some limits. Here's some good advice from Parenting magazine.
And if you've got little ones at home who want to be on the computer playing games, here's a web browser we developed at Safety4Kids, and it's yours for free--because we care! Click on SeeMore the Safety Seal's adorable face and follow a few simples steps. Consider it an early holiday present!
Let me know if you and your kids like the browser. Empowering parents (and who couldn't use some empowering?!) is key, and this is one way I think we can help.
Of course, you can always turn off the computer and go sledding! Just be careful when you do.

You missed one of the best websites online xblock.isafe.org. It is i-SAFE's internet website for kids. www.isafe.org. I have my kid going online right now to become certified.
i-safe is great, and there is a good deal of information there. our browser is for young children who want to play online and for parents who want to keep them safe while doing it. kids can't "click out" of a safe site once they install SeeMore's Safety Browser. as a parent, you customize it with sites you want your kids to visit. our browser is designed to combine fun and safety.
I monitor my child's Internet use with PC Pandora. Tips, education, discussions... all part of the safety practice. But when it comes down to it, teens will be teens. They are still going to engage in risky behavior. And with the WORLD (wide web) at their fingertips, who knows what can happen. They aren’t just hanging around town anymore. Parents need to be cognizant of their activity. Would you give a 14 year old the keys to a car and say, here you go – go wherever and do whatever you want…
PC Pandora sounds like a great tool. And older kids--teens--are definitely exposed to many choices and some of them unsavory. At Safety4Kids, we cater to younger kids, and therefore their parents. So our browser, for example, is geared toward limiting your preschooler's access to anything other than the sites you approve.
But the bottom line is, good parenting these days involves some kind of limits on the Web!
