My Most Unusual Reconnection with a Childhood Friend
Pubic hair. I never thought that I would hear from a friend I met in elementary school over that topic, but yesterday I did. I love my job.
I have not had contact with my friend, Jerry, since the 20th reunion of my high school class -- fifteen years ago. But, out of the blue she called my office and left me a message. What brought me to her mind? Shaving her pubic hair.
It seems that she's currently in a new relationship (after a divorce) and her partner mentioned that he found it sexually attractive when women trimmed or shaved their pubic hair. She said, "That sounds interesting to me." So, being the ever-thorough student that she always was in school, she used a search engine to learn the ins and outs of coiffing her nether parts.
What popped up? An article written by my colleague, Michael Castleman, about the phenomenon of shaving. In it, he asked me how the porn stars got it to look the way that they did and I replied with a sigh, "... I wish I knew." The rest of the article consisted of lots of tips that he accumulated in interviewing various "experts" on the topic.
So, after gathering all the tips, Jerry called and left a cryptic message about being a "voice from the past" and that I'd never guess how she came across my name. Since my presence on the Internet is ample, I suspected that her call was linked to something I had written somewhere. Yet, I should have guessed. When I wrote a piece about this topic several years ago, it caused a lot of comment -- much more than I would have anticipated. And here it was again.
I have interviewed gynecologists and their nurse practitioners about the prevalence of this phenomenon. I've found from this casual "research" that as a woman's age increases, the likelihood of pubic hair shaving decreases. So, perhaps that is a clue about women in new relationships after divorce. They are trying to feel and be young again.
Meanwhile, hearing from someone that I met over forty years ago only made me feel "mature." But what fun it was to reminisce with stories about Girl Scouts, an April Fool's joke we played on our math teacher, and clever word play about a teacher we had who got married and divorced in a short time period. There were also some poignant moments as we talked about classmates who had died from breast cancer and suicide. The conversation flowed like it had been a few weeks since we last talked.
Like I said, I love my job.

Hi
Since becoming an adult, I always have and always will shave my pubic hair. It's a cleanliness issue for me. I'm 45 years old.
I think once you start shaving you will never go back to having hair. Its much cleaner and comfortable with our any hair.
AS A FORMER FORENSIC R.N. I CAME ACROSS MANY MALE CHILD MOLESTERS WHO LIKED " CLEAN PUBIC AREAS" ON THEIR ADULT FEMALE PARTNERS. THIS MADE THE WOMEN APPEAR MORE CHILD-LIKE. OFTEN THEY SEEK OUT SINGLE FEMALES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN TO START UP A CONVENIENT RELATIONSHIP. BE FOREWARNED AND CAREFUL'. A FURLOTTE BSC. R.N.
I am 48 yrs old and recently completed chemotherapy for breast cancer. I missed losing my head hair, but loved not having any on the rest of my body. So now I keep my pubic hairs shaved along with legs and under arms.
I can understand trimming (a large bush)- not talking about that ridiculous stripe some women go for. But completely shaving is a turn-off to me (different strokes for different folks), plus you have to maintain regularly to avoid the roughness of a male-like beard. Regarding "cleanliness"- take a shower.
I have shaved it all off a few times and I really did not like it. I always felt "gooey and sticky". I also always thought men who ask their partners to keep theirs shaved was because they were perverts who want to have sex with 11 year olds. "Women" have hair.
I never thought there were women comfortable with all that mess of hair down there. It's not that I shave it to be as a baby face, but I really trim it enough to feel comfortable/breathable. I'm 48 and actually loving keeping my pubic hair 'short'. Done it since I got it. I have an electric hair clipper just for that area!
I am nearly seventy now, and I still shave and trim my pubic hair. I learned to do that when I moved to the tropics. Once in a while I used to shave it all off to give my husband a surprise. He loved it. But the main reason is that it feels so much cleaner and is so much cleaner. And if you don't have those little showers by the toilett all the time, having to use toilett paper always, you can't keep clean for a long time in a hot climate or any other for that matter.
When I was younger, I decided that a shaved pubic area was cleaner, neater and more comfortable. I started making sure that the area was kept shaved and ended up hardly being able to walk! Our family went to Astroworld and I literally had to use a wheelchair! When I saw my Ob/gyn she reassured me that I had a little "feliculitus" (may be misspelled but that's what it sounded like) or inflamation and infection of the hair folicles. She recommended that if I wanted to have a "shaved" pubic area, or even for your bikini area, that she recommends plucking....since that takes a long time, I just gave it up and don't shave anymore. So be careful that you don't shave too close or that your razor is not too old (with bacteria build up) because that episode in my life was amazingly painful!
Maybe men prefer shaved when performing oral. I certainly do.
I prefer shaving, it is cleaner, plus more sensitive. But, my exhusband didn't like it, he said it made him feel like a child molester. So, I can see how some men would feel that way, and how you might would want to be wary of some men that like it, unless you know them VERY, VERY well.
Hi
It's so much cleaner if women shave or I do wax the area there, it hurts but it's worth the effort, you are hairless down there for 3 weeks or even more. It's softer cleaner, it makes me feel better. Plus if you have a partner they would really appreciate it. Plus waxing it makes the hair softer and the growth of hair is less and less with time, it's like magic, I cant imagine myself growing a whole bush down there. I used to shave, but shaving is irritating to the area there the next day and it makes the hair stronger. So, waxing or sugering is the best.
I am a 26 F and I wouldn't have it any other way... I think it is very clean. I started shaving when I was about 16 and will NEVER go back, married or divorced! I have never had any complaints, but most males and females in my age range almost always shave or wax of some kind. You wouldnt let your yard look un-kept or un mowed, so PLEASE everyone do YOUR yardwork!!!
I started shaving a few years ago as a lark to surprise my boyfriend.Until then I had just let it be and due to genetics...well,shaving or at least trimming is better to me!!
I like the way it feels and it is much more comfortable in the summer and at that time of month.
I shave every so often, mostly when it is the time of the month. I get grossed out by the thought of cleaning up any blood in the hair.
Hi
I am a 52 year old male and I have been shaving ever since gray hair started to appear. My Wife started trimming herself shortly after and I don't think either of us your go back.Oral sex has increased by 100% both ways and it just looks better and feels better.Don't knock try it,it will always grow back.
It is ridiculous to think men like it because they might be "child molesters". A shaved woman doesn't even look the same as a child in those areas! Because she is a grown woman! And my grandmother who is part indian never had any hair on her privates, legs, or armpits. So for some people no hair is just as natural as not.
I prefer to shave and my husband likes it. He isn't a child molester nor is he thinking about young girls. He likes it because it makes oral sex more pleasurable for both of us. And I like while he doesn't shave it all off, he is very trimmed himself. He has been shaving down there for years. We were childhood friends and have been married for 17 years. He said he started shaving the sides when he played football it the jock underwear would pull on his hair "down there". We both shower daily and it is just cleaner! It's a fact that natural daily secritions and odor will adhere to hair. It's part of our evolution as thousands of years ago your scent could tell your partner clues about when you were ovulating, etc.. Just like animals can tell these things by smelling their mates.
I am a female woman, late 40s. I have tried shaving and found it oddly erotic, however my skin in that area did NOT like being shaved. I got the red bumps and ingrown hairs. I gave up. However I do like to keep things trimmed as my pubic hair tends to get too long. My husband does do a bit of shaving now and again and it does make things a little nicer. I think it is an area to be groomed like any other. Some like to shave it (just as some like to shave their heads) and some like to just trim. To each their own.
my 13 year old daughter complains of vaginal discharge and bad smell...she is not sexualy active yet...is this normal? What causes this?
I started shaving my public hair when I was in my early teens beacuse of ballet. I now prefer to have the hair shaved because I feel cleaner throughout the day and it breaths better. I especially shave before my monthly comes.
5 years ago I went to Cancun and had a brazillian wax before I left. Painful as it was, it was the cleanest I had felt down there in years. So much easier to clean up after sex too especially if you use lube. I am saving now for laser hair removal for the bulk of it, that way, depending on my mood, I can have some or not but I'll never have to worry about shaving before I hit the beach!
Hello,
I prefer not to shave all in that area.I do trim.I get servere boils from in grown hairs if I do shave. When that happens they have to be surgegley removed.
I prefer to think it's linked to oral sex; guys don't want a huge bush in their face when they're trying to "work."
For me, being shaved makes me feel more feminine, as does shaving my legs and underarms. My husband likes it because it is visually arousing to him to be able to see me, though I am certain it has nothing to do with his liking little girls. I like it because mys sensation is heightened.
I'm suprised no one has mentioned how much cooler and more comfortable you are if shaved. Try walking around a college campus during your third trimester in July !
I just think it is neater to be groomed - so if you are going to be admired on the surface, down there should also be included just in case. It makes one so much more confident.
There is nothing more beautiful or sexier than a natural full blown hairy woman displaying the full bush she has grown between her legs. Most exciting and arousing to say the least!
This guy loves the feeling of that soft furry bush against the palm of his hand and against his face when giving pleasure to his dates. It beats expecting a nice bush there and being surprised and let down with feeling a bald down under!
I was glad to see the comments on this site, especially from the few men who shave or clip their pubic hair. I've done mine a few times over the last few years. I found a hair clipper with the shortest comb does the first layer safely (including the scrotum), then a light pass over everything but the scrotum with a triple headed electric razor gets it all pretty clean. Anything closer you're risking skin irritation and infection. Last Saturday I went to a clothes optional resort with short hair for the first time. Nobody gave me a second look. After reading these comments, I'll go back completely "bald" without a molecule of reservation. Thanks for the discussion.
I love to see a woman clean shave their pubic hair. Its much more comfortable doing an 'oral'. I am a 53 year old male and I like to keep my self trimmed too. I shave off the part at the base of the penis.
I like bald but trimmed does the trick too. It really depends on the weather and what is going on. Oral is absolutely the best without the bush! I am 34 and a mother of 4
I am a male and I have been shaveing for about 12 years. I am 73 and streight. My first experience was an accident. Aftre showering, I would use baby oil on my pubic area. My daughter had bought a bottle of NAIR that was in the same colored bottle. After a few minutes, it was obvious that i was not useing baby oil. I liked the clean feeling and have been shaving ever since. Last year, my wife and I joined a nudest group and to my suprise, over 95% of men and women were bare down there. The age group is from 20s to 70s. Both my wife and I like the bare look and feel. We shave each other and it is always a foreplay to great sex
Ladies–two talking points. Yesterday, I went back to the clothes optional resort completely shaved. I only got a few hard looks, one disturbing one from a man. By the end of day, I did not care about others, reveling in the feeling and the uniqueness of the look. Most of discussion here comes from people already committed. Now I ask you, especially 50+ ladies: 1. What would you think if you saw a middle aged guy bare or trimmed at a clothes optional or nude resort? What would you think, having no notice, if when you got hot and heavy first time, reached for him and discovered his grooming habits? Just curious.
A RAZOR-BURN REMEDY!
I read this somewhere and it definitely helps! Antiperspirant. Makes sense, doesn't it?
I am a 40ish woman. I always shaved between, and kept the front very trimmed. When I got together with a man who shaved all of his off, I felt it'd be fitting that I do the same. Now I'll never go back to fuzzy! Its way cleaner, fresher, etc. I got spoiled by that now-ex boyfriend I guess. I am with an old-school man now. He loves my baldness but won't even trim his! Ick. I’ll keep working on him.
There is nothing more beautiful than the NATURAL beauty of a woman's womanhood, of her NATURAL breasts no matter big or small or the hairy growth between her legs, these are NATURAL and all part of her given beauty and are not remedied by faked boobs or removing the hair between her legs. This is all part of her mystic and individuality and sexuality unlike viewing that of a 9 or 10 year old child. Give me a NATURALLY made woman instead of a falsely remade woman any day!
I roared with laughter as I read the article on shaving pubic hair, though of course it's not a silly issue. It's refreshing to see such things discussed openly. I've never outright shaved my pubic hair, but since my teen years (I'm now 56) I've been in the habit of using scissors to trim all the excess length--otherwise it's long enough for a "ponytail." I hate the matting that occurs when I don't trim it--so it's a cleanliness issue. Plus, in past dating relationships, my partner expressed appreciation for not having to contend with a mouthful of hair.
I am 46 yr old guy and have been shaving since I was 30. I heard about it on the net and was curious so I tried it.Glad I did. Never a comment from medical people.
The Conair rechargeable professional multi-use hair trimmer does a nice job and is easy to use. It can cut very close and leave you very smooth.
I don't have a buzzer in my house, so I have to use scissors :( Its so hard. I just gave up. If my parents found a trimmer they'd take it. And I dont know where to buy one.
I am a married male (25 years) in his 50's. My wife and I both have shaved ourselves off and on since our 30's. We enjoy most forms of sex between us and especially oral.
To think that we men think of a shaved woman as a child is sick. I have never and will never think of a grown woman as a child. And have NO interest in child porn or anything like it.
I do however have a healthy sex drive and very much enjoy giving oral pleasure to my shaved wife.
I don't mean to get too graphic.. and appoligize if I am offending anyone but, you can enjoy the "juices/secretions" of a shaved woman far more if she is shaved plus it is so much more sensual. If you do enjoy that ..as I do.
For my wife the climaax of my "ejactuation" is also her pleasure (yes I enjoy the climax too), For me, it is the extra juices (from a shaved woman) from her arousal and from her climax that give me "my reward" for doing a great and very enjoyable job. That is best enjoyed when the pubes are shaved or at least closely trimmed.
Not trying to be graphic or crude, but sometimes it is best to be clear and forthright about even a subject as sentitive as this.
I am a 31 year old male and , Ok, so a few days ago I shaved for the first time. OUCH the burn hurts so bad and was wondering if there was a trick to it or if I am just sensitive to shaving in the pubic area Please help me!!!! I love it but will never do it again if there is no way to get rid of the burn of razor.
Pubes on my fiancee are okay - nicer when he trims them - but I hate my own pubic hair. I've asked both my family doc & my gyno about pubes; neither one of them can tell me a definite scientific purpose for them. When I was able to afford waxing, the brave lady said it was 'nature's air conditioning,' to which I replied that nature needed to get with the times. Waxing became too expensive, so I took to shaving with a Mach 3 razor & Bikini Zone's shaving gel - great stuff. I was horrified to find two & sometimes three pubes growing out of the same pore. I intend to someday afford all of the laser power necessary to kill each one of the little demons!
For the curious and inquiring mind, plug "pubic hair" in the search box at Wikipedia.com (Contains nudity) The last external link provides tips for newbies. You can purchase personal hair trimmers at Wall Mart, that's where I bought mine. They are smaller and quieter than regular hair clippers and can be used elsewhere, of course.
I have tries shaving before, but my skin is very sensitive and didn't like it at all. I got red bumps and it was itchy, so I stopped. I do keep it trimmed though, and I shave the sides. But for me personally, to shave all of it off would be like taking away my "womanhood" I guess. Not saying that my partner would be like a child molestor but I think that women have hair, and if the guy doesn't like it.. he should deal because men have hair too :)
I believe, and it is required in my religion, that waxing is the cleanest..and most efficience way fo keeping up your body. For one, it is cleaner, hair tends to keep bacteria, and requires much more care. Shaving is too quarrelsome because it grows out thicker each time, and coarse. Eventually, if you shave you could end up feeling the hair folicles through your pores..which feels bumby and its almost impossible to shave so you don't feel the hairs at all. Yes it is more painful, it isn't for everyone or the weak-hearted...but it really is worth it. Plus, from experience..if waxing is kept up regularly, eventually you begin to kill the folicles and aim for a hairless future! Wonderful isn't? No more waxing..ever..well almost ever.
Another thing hair can sometimes cause problems...like the infamous in-grown hairs..
I have never shaved my pubic area but at times I want to for a number of reasons. I for some reason have a quite a few grey hairs and I would love to dye them or just shave. Any Suggestions.
I love running my fingers through that wild hair down there, the hairier the better. Finding a female has shaved her natural growth between her legs is a real turn off!
Everyone keeps saying its cleaner, but its not!Having no pubic hair makes you MORE prone to yeast infections and things like that. Your hair acts as a protective barrier to your vagina.I cannot shave because I get horrible razor burn no matter what but even if I could I would NEVER shave it all. I think that just makes you seem promiscuous and dirty!
My daughter shaved in her pubic area, but now she says that it hurts. I was wondering if anyone knows something to put on the shaved area?
sDr.Sue Jo Hansen did say that a woman should never completely shave her vaginal hair (it does protect from vag. infections and is there for a reason per god :)....I do prefer trimmed very short..but, shaving it all of...I just can't take the itching and possibility of ingrown hairs.
For a woman to shave the hair off from between her legs is a cold disappointment to a man, like removing the warm welcome mat from the entrance to her private residence and for her guest to lose anticipation of a fully enjoyable visit into her natural environment.
its a complete turnoff for a man to see it completely shaved... it goes down to the personal preferance.. i prefer it bushy...
This posting is nearly a year after the date of the article. But I wanted to explain my pubic hair preference. I am male (49) and I am lasered / shaved smooth. That's just what I prefer... period. In addition I prefer that women expend at least a little effort keeping their pubic region well coiffed. Whether they trim it short or wax the whole region. At least it demonstrates that that they are in-touch with their pubic region ( sorry no pun ). Without exception, all of my women friends maintain their pubic region. I recommend at least trying Smooth on Smooth before anyone condemns it. If nothing else it could add just a little spice in your sex lives. - Forever Smooth -
Hi
Whenever I shave my vagina, I get razor cuts all over it and puss starts leaking out. How do I get a cleaner shave?
Hi,
I'm 24 and have been shaving since i was 18. I love it....my boyfriend loves it, #1 It keeps your vagina bad odor free. #2 It keeps you from scratching all the times, cause all that hair together does itch. and #3 Sex just is better!!!...lol
Hi
I'm 60 year old male and have shaved or trimmed for the last 20 years and for it very clean and refreshing mainly on very hot days. The way I started was vith a razor and found the razor burn uncomfortable so I then used a hair trimmer which was much better I didn't get the burn, but I wanted it shorter I liked the look. I now use a razor again in the shower with no shaving cream but I shave with the grain only once over the area it's not completely smooth but I don't get any bumps or burn, the feel is great and my wife loves it she does it the sameway with no problems. Our sex life is great oral is fantastic.
Give this method a try especially if you suffer from razor burn or bumps from trying to get too smooth.
everybody talks about shaving and rashes, etc, i use creame, its a bit messy, but so smooth and lasts longer than a shave.good old imac.
I shaved mine and i got a rash and some bumps down there. i think its stupid. Just trim it.
i just shaved & i completely regret it! i did it for a guy that i probably wont see for a while so i was just going to let it grow back & then just trim it. but i was wondering, how long does it take to grow back? i was hoping someone could get back to me because i really really really shouldnt have done it. my advice to anyone who is thinking about completely shaving, do not do it. people should except you for who you are, not what you look like "down there." so if someone could answer my question it would really mean alot.
peace & love
hi i am a man and had a question How do I shave my pubic hair? I would like to know how these men porn stars shave their pubic hair so that I can please my woman. Please give me an answer on this
Hi,
I am a 25 year old female and I recently shaved my pubic hair for the first time (I usually trim just to make it look "neat"). I wanted to try it because I heard it's cleaner. Will never do it again. Even though I used a good clean razor and was very careful, it feels itchy, irritated, and just painful. Also, the vaginal walls naturally produce secretions that provide lubrication and helps clean the vagina and prevent infection. I FEEL this lubrication more now and it makes me feel dirty and uncomfortable. So I don't understand the mention of it being refreshing and clean because I NEVER felt like this before with hair, no matter how hot the weather outside was. I felt comfortable and confident before shaving. I believe now that keeping the hair is safer, cleaner, AND it looks better too.

My suggestion to you is to leave those hairs down there alone. Be glad you have hair there to get grey. It's not in public display so who is going to know how much grey you have down there anyway.
since i started trimming my pubic hair. the hair become stiff. its not soft to touch.. unlike the way it was before. i am so distressed about it.
I recently asked my wife to grow hers back. She also has small breasts and, without pubic hair, she was just too "little girlish" for my comfort. I've always liked pubic hair on women--maybe because some of my fondest (solo) memories involve my dad's stash of '70s-era Playboys!
hi, I am a 42 yrs old male . since I can remember i have aways liked shaving my body hair . one time my girl friend of 3 yrs and i both did it at the same time. we both like how our bodies looked with out any pubic hair. about a year ago i had a phyical with a female docter and the night before i made sure i took a shower and shaved my hole body , she did'nt say a word,i do not think it matered to her if i had hair or not.
i had a baby a yr. ago and didnt shave my pubic area to much while preg.but now i have all the time and i get alot of really big ingrown hairs its seems like by the time i get rid of one theres another one what do i do and there get big and take a long time to come to a head. help
Um.. hi
I am a young teen (girl) and I have been shaving my pubic hair for a couple years now and about 6 month ago i started forming red bumps that looked like pimples. Well my mom said it should go away but it never did and i still have it today.
i can't shave down there because i get too many ingrown hairs and it gets worse when i shave. but i absolutely trim and i shave farther down. as long as you keep it trim i think its okay.
seriously why would a girl shave her pubic hair?
Hello
The first time i shaved down there i got red bumps and they started bleeding. What should i do?? cozboyz my age (16) want it shaved and id like it too. Can you please help??

my wife had always shaved but and I just trimmed up a little. Until recently. Now I shave competly and she loves it. The sensation of both of us being smooth is just the best. She loves to feel my boys now that they are smooth...
I love wrapping my lips around and diving into a clean shaven women with my tongue. There is no other way to enjoy a partner. Too bad some are so naive to think this is associated with child molestation.
Real women have hair. Period. We are mammals, we have it there to prevent chafing. Men who want women to shave are just sexist pigs who are exerting control, or pedophiles. I mean why else would a man want his woman's nether regions to look prepubescent?
Hairy is the only way to go!You don't look like a child and the medical reasons speak for themselves.I dont shave a hair on my body.If God had wanted us to shave HE would have invented the razor!
I don't like long pubic hair. It's uncomfortable. Ever since I started growing pubic hair, I've shaved. To each his own, some people like hair down there... Personally, I don't like being able to feel hair when I cross my legs. Besides, my husband doesn't like eating a hairy "cookie"

Hi why dose every one worry about ther pubic hair at a young age u can shave it off when ur older no need to wory and ur not gunna have sex at the age of 12 or 13 soo relly ther is no need to worry adn yes its normal it means ur growing up :) !! soo dont put urself down cuz u do have pubic hair its perfectly normal if u wanna shave then fine if u dont thats ok too ur dissiosn
I think it's pretty disgusting if women do not shave. A little hair is just fine, like less than an inch. Raggedy, long pubes are an extreme turn-off. Don't expect any males to give you oral if you have longer pubes. As for Furlotte, the registered forensic nurse who, for some odd reason, is unable/unwilling to press the capslock button one more time: I think that is only coincidence, since most males prefer shaved pubic hair. In my experiences, of course. I'm a 21 year old male, so that would be where my perspective lies.
I started shaving in my teens. I am older now and shave all the time. I use a Wal-Mart hair trimmer to do my own hair cuts, then do my pubic area. Keep it very short, and on occasions shave it all off with a Electric Norelco ( no cuts ) or a Multi-Blade Gilette in the shower. Gilette even has a one minute video if you google shaving pubic area for men. Hairless is great. Very erotic. Do it. It is your body. Women love it.
Pete Z.
I prefer shaved much better when it comes to oral sex.
Im 16 and i feel kinda weird when it grows too long, so i just trim it... IDK but it just feels better, i feel like i can breath down there when its too long...lol
