Depression and Sleep
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

I saw a recent study in the J Clin Psychiatry 2006;67(2):196-203: 'The relationship between depression and sleep disturbances: a Japanese nationwide general population survey."

24,000 people from over 300 communities were studied. The result showed that individuals who slept less than 6 hours and those whose sleep duration was 8 hours or more tended to be more depressed than those whose sleep duration was between 6 and 8 hours.

What is so interesting about this particular study is that these same sleep times are associated with mortality. In a Japaneese confirmatory study it was discovered that those who sleep less than 6 hours and more than 8 hours are more likely to die, earlier.

So the next question I would have would be is it the depression that is killing people, or sleep deprivation?

I'm somewhat of a novice when it comes to issues of sleep research, but one thing that I wonder with studies such as this is did they control for sleep disorders - especially OSAS? From what I understand, terminal insomnia (waking before you want to and being unable to return to sleep) is somewhat common in OSAS patients. On the other end of the spectrum, I also have read that the body can compensate for crappy sleep by just sleeping longer (e.g. longer than 8 hours). If it is OSAS, it would make a good deal of sense that people who sleep longer or shorter are at a higher mortality risk, considering the risks that it puts one at for things such as heart attacks and strokes. Any thoughts?

I'm not an expert nor have I had study on this case, but based on my experience, depression is more dangerous than having less sleep or much sleep. My aunt had depression problem and she died earlier than my other aunt who had less sleep. Oops...sorry if my comment is only based on my experience. Can anybody give more an accurate answer? Thanks

Well the problem of sleep and depression can be intertwined. There's some support to show that depressive symptoms improve once sleep disorders are resolved (e.g. CPAP for OSAS). Depression is a nasty illness, that's for sure. Morality rates in that population are witout a doubt about the average.

But insomnia is a major issue too. Many accidents on our roadways are attributable to a lack of sleep or fatigue. Not to mention reduced cognitive function, the possibility of a compromised immune system (though I'm not sure what the recent data says on this), or workplace accidents.

I am sleeping well now. Thanks to the benefits of the mangosteen. The mangosteen fight and prevent depression. This is one of the benefits of mangosteen is its ability to give the user a feeling of well being. Plus, tryptophan essential amino acid-is enchanced by taking daily does 0f mangosteen. Tryptophan is directly related to serotonin, which is responsible for sleep, moods and appetite.

I also have depression and take a couple of medications for this, but I was still having problems sleeping. Somebody on one of the posts recommened Melatonin,an over the counter pill found in the vitamin department. I have been taking it for 4night now and have never slept better. Try it it really works and since it is over the counter, must not be too addicting. Rose

I have suffered from depression for many years and take cymbalta30mg twice daily,ativan1mg3times daily and topams 200mg at bedtime. Even with these medications I was having a terrible time sleeping at night. Somebody from one of the blogs suggested Melatonin, which is an over the counter drug found in the vitamin department. I have been taking this for 5 nights now and I have never slept better. I can't beleive you don't need a prescription for this as I have tried prescription sleep aids that did no good at all. Try this guys, it really work. Good luck and God bless to all of you. Rose

My mother had thyroid cancer 3 years ago. Since then she has trouble falling asleep and takes 4 sleep medications. They don't always work and my mother has fallen into a terrible depression. She thinks her hair is falling out which I don't think it is and she is also hearing things. She doesn't want to do anything and she doesn't want to give up her pills even though they don't work. What else can we do. Her thryoid levels are fine due to synthroid.

I wake up from a seemingly good sleep usually around 3 to 5 AM. I awaken to a hard shiver or chill. I get another blanket and get warmer and the chill goes away. I am taking a Zantac generic for depression. This shaking only happens in the early morning hours. Anyone have a similar experience and do you have any suggestions?

I echo Anonymous. I've been searching the site but haven't found anything that really addresses my symptoms i.e my left eye is twitching(my right one does occassionally. Is this over tiredness or stress related or both?

This is interesting - I too am looking for the cause of a left eye twitch and lately noticing other little twitching (my mostly fingers) and all on the left side of my body. Hmmm....

Bbut I came here because I'm also having another problem... Last night it happened about 5 times. Just as I am falling asleep my body whole body does this jumpy thing like I've just been scared out of my wits, I usually end up shouting out too.
It really reminds me of when Bugs Bunny would sneak up on Elmer Fudd to scare him and Elmer Fudd would jump twice his height in fright - but I never can recall anything scary or otherwise -- it's happening RIGHT as I'm falling to sleep so no dreams yet.

I'm wondering if the eye twitching and the other are related? Even so it's interesting to see that there are others with twitching specifically in the left eye.

As for depression I don't particularly feel depressed but maybe I just don't recognize it. I am absolutely stressed out though and with no end in sight. So... Any ideas?

Jessica, Have you ever been driving and had the sensation of waking up (in fright) without ever realizing you have fallen asleep?

I am a 52 year old male, I am in fairly good health at the moment. I have been in remission from cancer for 13 years. I had a heart attack about 2 years ago. But my biggest problem is my bi-polar disease, I was diagnosed with in 1985. I currently take 2 milligrams a day. At my highest point of my medicine over 20 plus years of taking xanox, was 6 milligrams a day. So like anyone with mental health problems, and cutting over time. About 2/3rds. of my daily intake. I am a slave to the medication. I have seizures if I don't take it. My anxiety and panic attacks are needless to say endless. I was told the supplement mangosteen helps to take less xanox, and then my dream is to be xanox free. Does anyone have a sucess story with mangosteen helping bi-polar patients. And if so how long did it take to see a diffrence? Thanks to any responce.

I'm 46 years old male and I have been diagnosed with clinical depression just last August 2007. I have been seeking therapy along with medication. The two medications that I have been taking are Sertraline HCL 100 MG and Budeprion SR 150 MG. The first was Sertraline and just about 4 weeks ago I have been using the Budeprion. I have had problems sleeping prior to being diagnosed with dipression. I'm assuming this was created by my financial problems, from being a great provider for my family with my remodeling contracting business in the past to my current financial troubles. I'm currently having trouble sleeping through the night. I have been experiancing short spasms when I'm just falling asleep and it feels as if it's occuring while I'm in a deep sleep. These spasms feel like seizures, because they seem to last longer. Along with this reoccuring problem I also have more dreams that they seem to wake me up in the middle of the night. Is there anything I could do to help this ploblem I can't seem to change. I need motivation in order to do my type work and feel this is what is missing in my life.
