The Mattress Question
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

What are you buying and is it worth it?

Again Consumer Reports to the rescue. I am always pleased when they come out with new reviews (in all areas) especially in sleep products. The focus this past month was the mattress, that big rectangle you end up paying thousands for and continue to ask yourself why!!

In truth, I have started to work with some of these companies and I have learned a bit:
  1. Sales, Sales, Sales: Wait for them. If you pay full price I have some land in Tucson to sell you. There are always potential big discounts on mattresses so wait it out.
  2. Names do not mean a thing. Sure, the brands can have some significant differences but within the brand you can find the exact same mattress in one store and another with a different name, so buyer beware. There are some significant differences between brands.
  3. Do you get what you pay for? According to CR, of the brands they tested there was no one brand that was preferred over another. But be careful, cheaper is not better. Many of the less expensive ones are made of less expensive materials, in some padding is so thin that you can feel the springs.
  4. Consider the "maintenance factor". Today's mattresses are usually padded only on one side, so flipping them is not needed but rotating is necessary. Also be careful of the padding since it can make some up to or over 20 inches thick (sheets must be the "deep pockets" type to accommodate for this).
  5. Increases in technology are helping. We see now that there are real stain resistant mattresses (Simmons has one that has Teflon in it and you can zip it off and put it in the washer!)
Bottom line: In 7 years your mattress will double in weight due to sweat, dust mites and oil from your skin ( YUCK), so plan to get a new one every 5-7 years and you should be in good shape.

Special Buying tips:
  • Lie on it for 15 minutes in every position to see if it is comfortable
  • Check for a 30-day money back guarantee ( it usually does not include the delivery fee.
  • Make sure to get a mattress which supports you, not too firm and not too soft.
  • Remember, you and your bedpartner may need different things. One size may not fit all!!

I would have appreciated a thoughtful review of TempurPedic and Sleep Number and their rip offs, but you've presented an information-less commentary. Any chance you can get someone to comment who knows something or is willing to share information?

Thanks for the information. I am going shopping tomorrow. I will certainly check out the Simmons with the washable cover.

Ofcourse he is selling his book. Duh! What he sold me is a new mattress for sure.

If you're looking for useful information to guide your mattress buying decision, this isn't it. The fact of this article's emptiness should also tell you that you don't need to waste any money buying his book.

Ok...ok....people...so the good Doc wants to sell some books, however he did provide the link to consumer reports which does have some more free info on its site regarding the ole mighty mattress. Bottom line is this: I like chocolate you like Vanilla. Summer feels better to me and winter might tickle your fancy. Try the darn thing out. If you like it GREAT!! buy it (on sale of course)

I am currently a minister, but sold mattresses before that. There is a significant difference in brands. Sealy and Serta were the two with the most customer satisfaction. Every Simmons Beautyrest came back due to customer dissatisfaction. And yes, there are always good sales if you will watch the ads.

There are three types of mattress products: the innerspring, latex and memory foam. If you have a physical disorder you should try each type to find the best for you. I have had good results selling latex mattresses to owners of RV's. The mattress sits on a piece of plywood so needs to be soft yet supportive. I do not sell anything except Latex and Memory Foam. Innerspring will not hold up.

I have sleep disorders and arthritis and this mattress has helped me tremendously to get a good night's sleep.

I have had arthrites for 30 years and 6 years ago we bought a sleep number bed and since then I never get up with stiff joints that take me 2 hours to walk out. I will never have another type of bed, it is the best.

I had a sleep number bed which at first I liked but there was 1 major flaw. MOLD! There is very little venting in the bed as the mattress sits on a solid piece of plastic, so moisture gets stuck in the internals and starts to grow mold on the air chambers. Sleep number says to just wash this off and that it is not a problem that you can return the mattress for. So after only a year and a half I threw out a $3000 mattress as Mold is unacceptable. I have searched this topic on the web and I have found that this has happened more then a few times. For folks who own this mattress I suggest you zip the top off to ensure that you are not sleeping on top of mold.

I have a Tempurpedic, now my thing was if your going to spend so much daily time on something the money would be worth it. Recently married, I didn't realize, how much of bad night sleeps we were getting til we got this bed. We don't have back pains anymore, either of us and actually feel as tho we got a goods night rest. Since we got it, we've actually had 3 more family members buy 1 as well. I came to this looking for info like everyone else, I still believe we did right, but thank-you too for sharing about the sleep # bed and mold, ewwww, glad I didn't get that 1. I assure you tho, The Tempurpedic is well worth it and feel as tho, I can give my opion because I own one now for over a year and love it!!

I'm surprised at the number of people who say they like their TempurPedic mattress. Mine has been one of the most expensive mistakes I've made in a long time. It collects body heat and roasts me alive all night. The foam begins to break down, and by the third year I found that I was sleeping in a sweaty depression that made it nearly impossible even to roll over. The company was difficult to deal with, and now I'm looking at replacing a $3,000 bit of bad judgement. Thanks to the person who warned about mold on the Sleep Number mattress. I live in a humid climate, so that rules out that choice for me.

I'm wondering whether there is a difference in the tempurpedic and the knockoffs. It is all the same stuff? As for being too hot.....I see that some now have vent holes through the foam.

Have owned a sleep number bed now for a year and love it. Tried all the other types including foam..very costly mistakes for us and never slept well. Heard about mold on some postings and think that may be a problem of relative humidity in their home that may need attention. I understand some high-end hotels are also using sleep # beds also now

If your mattress is a regular mattress and you find that it is too soft or sagging in the middle or in the spot where you sleep try this before getting rid of it: Measure your bed then go to the lumber yard and purchase a 4X8 sheet of plywood 1/2" thick. Have it cut in 3 pieces or whatever it takes to fit your bed. Make sure it has no slivers that could damage you mattress. Then slip these between the mattress and the bedspring. We have a Queen size and the boards measure 23"X 4'. What a difference this makes! I did this 30 years ago and still use them as needed. When not needed they're easy to store, just slip them under your bed. This little trick can save you a bundle. You'll be amazed what this can do for you, your back and your mattress.

We bought a Dormia mattress a year ago. It was very expensive (over $3,000) but worth every penny. My husband can get out of bed several times during the night and I don't feel it. I have never slept better.

My husband and I like to sleep in a cold bedroom, which is easy to come by in our climate. A Tempurpedic is deinitely not a mattress to use in such a situation. The cold makes the Tempurpedic hard as a board. Body heat creates a nice "mold" for your body, but turning over and changing position is a problem when the rest of the mattress is like a rock!

I bought the Sealy "Protege" Posturpedic mattress. It was sold to me as a firm mattress. You do not flip it but turn it and it sags in the middle which Sealy calls it forming to your body. Unfortately the sag just gets worse just what my back needs!

Like most everthing in life,
1. You get what you pay for.
2. Quality and value are in the mind of the purchaser (if YOU try it and LIKE it, then you'll justify its value and why it is right for you).

Have owned 2 temperpedic mattresses for 5 years. Everyone who has slept in our guestroom wants to take the Tempurpedic mattress home with them.

Used to work for a bedding company who tried to make and sell a temperpedic knock-off mattress. Complete failure. Had same KIND of "memory foam" but not the SAME foam as tempurpedic.

Have disabling spinal problems. After four surgeries and multiple lam's on every level from L1-L2 through L5-S1, have had a sleep number for the past five years and, although it is not perfect, it is the best I have found since. Can't go to a hotel on vacation and get a decent nights sleep anymore. Have the pillow top model and would not suggest anything else, just wish it had even deeper cushion. I am 35-50, spousal unit is a constant 50. I am glad I have the ability to change the firmness, that really helps, although in the dead of night the pump is too noisy. I don't adjust during the night so I won't wake her. Also, at least for me, sleeping on my back vs. sleeping on a side requires different settings to get the proper support. I guess nothing is perfect.

I gave up on regular mattresses six months ago and bought a Premier Queen Size Aero Bed. I've had lower back pain for 4 months. After 3 nights, it was gone - best thing since sliced bread! I put an "egg crate" foam mattress topper on the Aero bed underneath the sheets - the bed is extremely comfortable - I also use a knee pillow between my knees (have always used this regardless of mattress).

I was astound when so many commented that this was an "empty" article. I never got that impression; it gave me enough info to start researching on my own and isn't that what non-fiction articles are all about. YOU are your own best advocate.
The comments generated by this article were by far more useful than any article. (I mean, what hidden agenda would a common person who actually used the item have in telling of his experience?)
As for getting a waterbed...
We had one, slept on it for nearly 20 years. As we get older, a body needs more support. Support a waterbed can't provide. That's why we now have an innerspring mattress. Is a waterbed comfortable? Yes. Is it warmer than the bed we have now? Yes. Does it provide the support we need for a good night's sleep and a backache free morning? No. Even filled to more than capacity or filled with air. No one thing is best for everyone.

My wife loves a firm mattress, I've favored softer. We both somehow agreed on a Tempurpedic Deluxe, and are thoroughly spoiled now and love it. I agree, this article has no substance. I would though, like to see a thoughtful comparison of the Sleep Number Bed, Tempur-Pedic and a regular innerspring mattress. Comparisons such as cost, comfort, correctness for our spine.

my husband and I bought a tempurpedic bed four years ago and just love it. the cover unzips so you can wash it. it is mite and bed bug resistant. mattress is still like new without any sags or depressions. Neither of us find the mattress to be hot. I tend to be a very warm person and would not like it if that were the case. a relative also purchased this mattress and is very happy with it it is an expensive mattress, but I would recommend it to anyone, especially those with back problems.

I was very disappointed in the article. Very little meat, big on generalities.
I recently bought a sleep number. It has been very problematic. Sometimes it will lose air for no reason. I wake up and it is down to 10 or 15. Although both sides are set at the same number there is a decided difference between the firmness. In addition every morning when I wake up I wake up in a ditch. You can actually see the imprint of my body. In addition there is a rut down the middle between the two sections. Sleep is worse since getting the "sleep number". I would not advice anyone to purchase a sleep number.

Well, I have had the same bed for 30 years. I love it. Bought it from Sears and it is box springs and interspring mattress. It doesn't sag anywhere; the box springs has torn fabric from moves, but all in all, buying a new bed every few years--would not recommend it. Just a waste of money. That is why there are so many mattress stores.

I don't see any mention of the Nautilus air bed system. This bed is similar to Select comfort, but like a super deluxe upgraded version. Had the Select Comfort for years in one of our homes. Decided to try the Nautilus and now both of our homes have the Nautilus in the master bedrooms and Select Comforts in the guest bedrooms and our RV. We were in an auto accident and severe injuries don't let us get a decent night's rest on any but these two types of bed systems even five years later. To anyone with bad back I suggest trying either of these beds. Every one of our overnight guests have purchased (at the least) the Select Comfort Sleep Number bed, and those we have relinquished our bedroom to have purchased the Nautilus. The side rails are much sturdier (you don't sink down if you sit on the edge, and the top foam and padding is far more plush and comfortable). One husband and wife did exacly as we had. Started with the Select Comfort and two years later moved it to the guest room and purchsed the Nautilus for themselves.

I purchased a DORMIA memory foam mattress from a mattress chain store. At first it was great BUT i have had it for less than a year and it's already sagging and NOT supportive. The saleswoman told me that TEMPURPEDIC lost their monopoly on the memory foam and that The DORMIA mattress was made of the SAME material. I somehow doubt that now!!

I can see why this "doctor" is writing articles like this and trying to sell a book, rather than working in the field for which he was supposedly educated. When WebMD says he is their sleep expert, it leaves me wondering. It also reminds me that most of their articles which I have read seemed to lack substance as did this one, and then tried to sell somebody's book.

i've bought both the tempurpedic and the sleep number and i'm out of a total of 7,000.00.The tempurpedic is great the first year, after that the problems just kept coming.Only had that one for three years til the memory foam was just two impressions that you could see thru the sheets and comforter. The sleep number was great when we first bought it but because we live in a humid enviroment six months of the year the mold started and wouldn't go away.not to mention sleep number did nothing when it came to the so called warranty. The only way to control the mold was with bleach and water but our younger children became very ill, which was determined to be the fault of the mold..!!!!!!!!!

My wife and I have slept on every type. Memory foam is much too hot and does not reform quickly when you roll over.We slept on one for a week and both disliked it immensely. Water beds are just strange to sleep on. A good innerspring can be fine, but they don't offer adjustable firmness on each side. And eventually the springs will sag.

Our favorite by far is the middle to top end Select Comfort Sleep Number. We live in an airconditioned home in the south and have not had mold problems. The mattress holds pressure perfectly, and the manufacturer stands behind it.

I loved my water bed but my husband couldn't sleep on it because of a herniated disc. So for the last 6 months he has been in the spare bedroom. So I broke done and bought a simmons beautyrest(king size) pillowtop and we now sleep together. I still miss my waterbed but my marriage is doing better. I truly freak out when I see and touch the tempurpedic bed and the air bed is too soft for my husband. I can't afford the number bed as I wouldn't downsize from a king. I need a new mattress (my current latex foam is twenty years old and is finally getting a little hard and not as resilient)and have been debating between the Tempurpedic and the Sleep Number. I tried the Sleep Number in the store and loved it, even without a pillow top. I like a firm mattress. This past spring I spent four days at my daughters house and she gave up her brand new Tempurpedic to me during my stay. After day 3, I woke up with a back ache that took nearly the whole day to clear up. That night was a misery. I was glad to get out of there. It is so soft and non-supportive and she said she got the firmest one. I didn't know there were differences. But, if you like a firm, resistant mattress, do not, I repeat do not get the Tempurpdeic. And I'm old, will be 65 next month. A soft mattress is the worst thing for old stiff joints!

I am another Tepur-pedic horror story. Bought bed because of sleep disorder and to surprise my other half, who states he can sleep on rocks. Now he has back pain, I have hip AND back pain....but we dont wake each other up getting in and out of bed. I think I will take less sleep over this pain. Not to mention activities of nightly living, which are much more difficult on a tempur pedic. Why does no one ever mention this????

I had a Sealy Posturepedic for 30 years, which I did like. But I was only 20 when I got it. I could have slept on concrete back then. Later, I just didn't want to spend the money on a new expensive mattress. But since I now have a split disc in my back, along with rheumatoid arthritis, and because of the ridiculous old age of the mattress, we really needed to get a new one. I looked at the expense as a medical necessity. My husband and I decided on the Tempurpedic. We have had it for about 2 1/2 years now and we really like it. One thing I liked about the Tempurpedic was the fact that there are no mechanical parts to break down. I use a sheet as a mattress cover to further protect it. So we have two fitted sheets on it, which works fine for us. I have absolutely no complaints and sleep very well. I have started to notice, only by feel, a very minor, little bit of an indentation where I sleep, which I don't notice by just looking at the mattress. So I'm thinking that I notice it when I'm laying there because it has conformed to my body. I am very happy with this purchase and hate to think about going on vacation or sleeping anywhere else - I'm afraid I am now very spoiled. I would buy this mattress again - unless something better is invented. A word to the person who has a snoring spouse - an ear, nose & throat specialist recommended my husband go to a doctor who specializes in sleep disorders. He had a sleep study done overnight in a hospital and now sleeps with a C-Pap machine. Although the mask he has to sleep with is unattractive, it helps him to keep breathing all night and allows me to sleep w/o listening to him snoring. So between the Tempurpedic mattress & the C-Pap machine, we are now happy sleepers.

Tried several types, returned some, and then found Simmons BackSaver. Perfect! Another plus is the Olympic Queen size: 6" wider than Queen and 10" narrower than std King. King size linens fit, but Penneys and Simmons' web site also sell the Olympic size. still plenty of width but fits the room better.

The Dr.'s article was a waste of time but the commentary it elicited was well worth it! I'm ISO a new mattress and these posts are very useful, esp. the one about the Consumers article - I was ready to spend the $$ to buy it, but now I won't - thanks!

The Dr. had a few things to say, but not what I was looking for. There's something good and bad to say about every mattress and one could go off the deep end trying to find the one perfect mattress. I think that a medium-firm mattress is good for most. Some say firm isn't as good as originally thought and others say soft is nice but does not provide enough support. I have a debilitating spine disease and bought a Kingsdown. It's a great mattress, but it's soft. Then I bought a Sealy--it's a great mattress, but I bought firm-it's too firm.I had a memory foam on it and I do like the way it molds to the body and, since I'm always cold, the heat retention is fine--they make them better now anyway. You can take a firm mattress and make a memory foam bed out of it with a topper(5lbs is best and I found a good price at Isoform and Bergad). My PT said to get a Temper-pedic, but it's too late. I slept on a number bed at the Radisson and it was comfortable but I thought it was a gimic--if you want a certain softness/firmness, buy it that way or get memory foam on a firm mattress which does it all--gives support and softness. There's Christopher Reeves bed, the SAT bed. It is the only one approved by the National Government and is covered by many ins. companies. All the Hiltons are getting them so you can try one there--I haven't tried one yet, but it is supposedly the only one that continually changes according to your body movements and it doesn't use electronics like the number bed--it has a hand crank with a backup battery. Columbia-Presbyterian and Lennox Hill hospitals are using them.

I have Sjogren's Syndrome. There are many symptoms but for this forum the one of significance is joint and muscle pain. For years I writhed sleeping on conventional beds. Pressure points caused stabbing/burning pain and or limbs to go completely numb. It was excruciating. After a few mornings of rolling out of bed onto the floor on all fours to ease my body into an erect position I decided an answer must be found. For about ten years it was a fiber filled waterbed. Then my finger joints and wrists became so tender and painful I was having a difficult time raising the heavy corners of the mattress to change sheets. The search was on again. For the past 10 years I have been sleeping on a Select Comfort 5000 (my number is 35). It has rescued my quality of sleep and I am able to handle the routine care of bedding without pain. Some sales people will tell you their pillowtop will not form indentations. That is simply bogus on *any bed. Fabric will stretch and conform over time. Initially when the pillowtop was quite fluffy, it was more difficult to *feel the changes in air pressure. But now I can feel it change and get it adjusted just right. I humbly put forth the deduction that if one purchases a thick pillowtop...the less they will notice in air pressure changes...and the more indentation they will observe over time. I hope this helps someone relieve their issues with pain. When I travel and know I will be on a conventional bed (in one place) more than a couple nights...I carry an air mattress along. Sincere Regards to All!

I originally went to this site because it mentioned the sleep number bed (formally called Select Comfort. Due to severe back and neck problems my doctor recommended this mattress twenty years ago, I have since changed out the motor free of charge, change out the air chambers also free of charge. Now I decided t change the pillow top,` that price was prorated, but no bad considering that the purchase was made twenty years ago, ($250.00, king sig pillow top. My concern and question is where is the information that I logged on to regarding the "Sleep number bed"? The company did admit that they were having a mold issue that is why they did not charge for the air chambers exchange. I need more info. regarding mold and the sleep number bed. Still not getting a good nights sleep, PArkland, FL

My parents purchased a sleep number bed and proudly placed it in the guestroom for my husband and me . . . it was like sleeping on any air mattress as a girl scout . . . after three days of listening to the noise of the pump all night and falling into a crease in the middle, my husband and I ruled this puppy out. Also, it would not hold pressure on my husbands side and both sides were not the same it you gave them the same number, this bed is definitely a pain in the back.

My son had back and neck problems and invested in a Tempurpedic and swears by it. Hubby and I are getting a new mattress this week and will go for the top of the line Tempurpedic, wish us luck!
