The Dangers of Sleeping Naked

I was amused this week when I read in the Guardian about Travelodge's current crisis with sleepwalkers in the buff. The hotel chain now keeps towels on hand at the front desk to help these lost souls cover up when they wake up and find themselves out in public with, well, everything out in public.

Towels? I think they should use robes. If, God forbid, I were to wake up in the lobby of a hotel with strangers checking me out, I think I'd rather don a robe and dash as politely as possible back to my room than wrap a flimsy hotel towel around my waist and make a run for it (we know how insubstantial some of those hotel towels can be). According to Travelodge, the incidence of naked sleepwalking, which occurs almost exclusively among its male guests, has increased sevenfold in the past year. Now the staff is learning how to deal with this unsettling trend. I love how they call it a "phenomena."

Sleepwalking is not very common in the general population (estimates vary between 1 and 15 percent). It's more common in children than in adults, and Travelodge may be seeing more men than women in this behavior simply because it has more male than female guests. Because sleepwalking typically occurs if a person is sleep deprived, I'd venture to guess that many of these men are in work-related stays at the hotel and could use more sleep. Sleepwalking originates during deep sleep and the person usually remains in that state throughout the episode. Sometimes it's hard to awaken a sleepwalker, and the person may or may not recall getting out of bed...but no doubt he may think twice about forgoing the pajamas the next time.

Which brings to me this question: What's with all these men sleeping bare naked? I was curious enough to find out if there were any statistics about people who sleep in their birthday suit. I came across ABC News' poll called "American Sex Survey," which was done three years ago (this kind of data tends to be evergreen). Guess what: men are twice as likely as women to sleep in the nude (31 percent of men, 14 percent of women). Who knew?

But I wonder if those figures change when it comes to traveling. I don't know about you, but even if you're not a sleepwalker, being in a place other than the comforts of my own bed has its own hazards. Perhaps with the allure of carry-on luggage only these days, the pajamas get left behind.

Don't you think there may be more sleepwalking because of the drugs, Ambien and Lunestra? Seems likely too me.

Maybe that should come as a label warning -- if traveling, put on pajamas before taking this pill.

I'm a single female and I sleep better when I am naked. Except for the occasional underwear, clothing inhibits my sleep. Sleepwalking has never been an issue for me. If I were to experience it I doubt that I would be in need of a towel or robe. I would just strut on back to my room.

I've always liked sleeping naked but don't do it any more because I live in California (earthquake and wildfire country) and I'm concerned about having to get up REALLY fast and flee my home. It would be awful to do that naked...too embarrassing and they show everything on news channels nowadays. It would be just my luck that some camera person would film me.

I can't remember where I stumbled across it, but I did find a web site for exhibitionists. One of the most popular 'tricks' for people who like to expose themselves is in a hotel where they use various excuses for why they have ended up locked out of their room and totally naked. "I was just getting the newspaper and the door slammed" is one. Sleepwalking is another.

I think the hotels are getting scammed and the good Doctor has fallen for the trick.

Ya'll are crazy. Why would you want to sleep naked in a hotel bed? Just imagine all the different people that may have slept in the bed before you and the possibilty that the sheets may not be as clean as you think. Sleep naked at home.

I have slept naked for as long as I can remember, late teens? I'm 34 now and live with my folks. They've gotten used to the fact that I don't like PJ's. I'm very mindful of them being in the house, I don't want to embarass them but I'm not the least embarassed by nudity. I sleep on flannel sheets year round and there is nothing like the soft sheet on naked skin, and I keep a robe nearby. Nudity is natural so when I hit the door after work, I take off the unders and slap on flannel pj's.

I try to not sleep nude in hotels for the same reason that was mentioned...how clean are the sheets?

I sleep naked in the summer time. In the winter I usually wear pj's, but amazingly sometimes the things I wear to bed just end up off and at the bottom of the bed or on the floor anyway. I do agree though that sleeping naked is just more comfortable. The things you wear to bed usually just end up all bunched up and tangled around you anyway.

Hi , I have nothing against nudity or sleeping naked , but what everyone here is seeming to forget about is , what happens if you are sleepwalking and a child sees you !! I'm sorry but I would not be a very happy mother if my child seen anyone naked in a hotel lobby or in the street , Unfortunately there are too many child offenders these days roaming the gloaming and just how many of them are actually using these tactics and excuses to be perverted !!
Nudism is and should only be for in your own home and if you do sleepwalk then Please have the decency to think about the fact that other people don't want to see you walking about naked or have their children either !! Also how would you feel if you or YOUR child was on the recieving end of this !! Something tells me you would see it differently !!

Hello! I recently left a comment, however, I feel I have to leave another one, in response to the person who said we were all INSANE, because we sleep in the nude.
Well, I thought we were living in a free country. We are living in 2007, NOT the days of Queen Victoria, who I had great respect for, to say the least.
We are in the privacy of our own home/apartment,hotel/whatever, and it is the business of NO ONE, I repeat, NO ONE, if we all sleep in the nude.
If everyone would mind their own business, and didn't criticize/judge other people, what a world we would have.
Happy Day, Oh, Happy Day!
Maybe the nay sayers are really the people who, actually are sleeping in the nude.
Get a life!
I will be hitting the bed in a few short hours...and, guess what???? I will be sleeping in the NUDE.
There are nude beaches all over this world.
Are we going to ban NUDE beaches?
In Portugal women walk around with their breasts open for everyone to see.
It is a way of life. And, in good old CANADA...a lady in Ontario, a few years ago, was given the permission by the courts to walk with her breasts shown.
So, swallow that one, will you.
We are living in the best country in the world.
Enjoy your NUDITY all, I certainly will!

as for being insane, maybe i am. i enjoy it if i am. at least i don't judge others for doing what they choose in private. that to me is insane.
i talk in my sleep. i only walk to the pantry to get a snack.

I think this is hilarious. And I think some of the comments are funnier than the original topic. Luckily I can laugh at all the people who are getting upset over this. As far as a child seeing someone sleepwalking in a hotel nude goes, I really do not believe it will have a negative effect on the child at all. Not unless the parent gives it that interpretation. I would simply laugh and make sure my child saw it as nothing bad.

I was really hoping the article was going to address something more interesting than just the fact that it's "dangerous" to sleep naked for fear that someone might catch you sleep-walking. I was disappointed.I was really hoping for something related to Sleep Disorders, which I suppose sleepwalking is. Merely a clever means to get people to read this article.

But oh my, there are many naked-friendly people out there. And to them I say, "Cool--to each their own." Personally, I can't stand to be WITHOUT my PJs because I am always cold. And my partner prefers just the opposite. Go figure. I guess whatever works. But just to be on the safe side, maybe Travelodge should post some little reminder on their website about remembering to pack your jammies!

Maggie is a genius in suggesting that side effects of the newly popular sleeping pills might explain the increase in sleepwalking. The real nightmare would be if these same drugs also cause priapism or, as the commercials say, "an erection lasting more than four hours." Do we really need businessmen who are naked AND erect parading through the Travelodge lobby?

I find it very difficult to believe in sleep walking. I bet that if you stood in front of a "sleep walker" with a lit torch in your hand in front of you, that "sleep walker" would not walk onto the lit torch.
I say everybody to thier own, but if a "sleep walker" walks into my space I think I can walk him/her right back where they came from with the heat of my cig. lighter pointed at their middle.

I used to sleep in the nude before I had children. I partially agree with not freaking out when it comes to nudity with children, but I must say that I teach my children that it is there body and no one should ever see it or touch it so we keep it to ourselves. I would be very upset if I was in a hotel and my child encountered that. But my child should be sleeping by that point and I shouldnt have to worry about it. And if they do see then of course you should explain that to them. As for sleeping naked I dont think anyone is a freak or insane for making that decision, the human body is a beautiful thing especially when it is shared with a partner in bed, nothing is more wonderful than that.

1, 2, 3 BORING ARTICLE! I don't care to read if you do or do not sleep in the nude. This is not a health issue. I too, thought it might be about health risks, like infection, chafing, or something. I for one would like to say there is nothing wrong with sleeping nude or not sleeping nude, but why are all the nude sleepers acting like they're on the defense or better or more secure with their bodies because they sleep naked? It's no one else's business but the person you share a bed with how you prefer to sleep.
On behalf of all people who like pajamas, it doesn't make them insecure. If you sleep on your side your legs sweat on each other and I find that uncomfortable, so I wear PJ pants, not that it's anyone's business.

I use to love sleeping in the nude, so when my husband was ready, so was I. Since he passed away I decide it was time for the clothes PJ's to be on again.

It does feel great to get out of a nice hot shower and climb nude into bed. Miss that.

I am in my 50's and I wish I could do that again. He loved that too.

This is not the ice age. release your inihibitions. Let go and don't worry about trivial things suchs as that.

I slept nude for years, then I had a child. When they are able to get up at night and come get you, it's just more comfortable to be wearing something. Plus, he would also sleep with me at night sometimes, too. Now, after years of not sleeping nude, I find that I get cold without at least a t-shirt on. So I always have a stash of XXXlarge t-shirts to sleep in even though I normally wear a medium. My husband sleeps nude and in the winter time spends his first ten minutes after waking shivering, but suggest he wear something warm and you will be subjected to withering stares!

To each his own - sleep however you are most comfortable.

I, for one, am relieved that the only "danger" the article lists for sleeping naked is sleepwalking! I am a 40-something female who has slept in the buff for over 20 years and [so far] have not sleep walked. I find some of the comments posted a sad commentary on our society that people judge others so easily; "live and let live" as long as what you're doing isn't causing harm to anyone else, and even the occasional nude sleepwalker is not really causing anyone harm [except him/herself some embarrasment when they awaken to find themselves in public].

I am a 54 year old female who has been a sleep walker from the time I could actually walk. I have had to be returned, still asleep I may add, several times to my home. My parents did everything they could to keep me in and as a young woman in a new town in a new state I took extra precautions to keep me in at night after escaping several times. I still got out. I have driven vehicles in my sleep. I have fired guns in my sleep. I have misplaced many items in my sleep which suggests to me I am still leaving my house.
I sleep in clothing, but it seems to me the problems is that someone needs to figure out why we are sleepwalking, not whether we are naked or not when we do it. I am sure the statistics are way off, that there are a lot more sleep walkers than are reported. I know every Dr I have every asked about it just shrugs it off.

Ok, the "dangers" of slepping Nude can either be accepted or rejected, however; I was born into a family of Nudists and are still a Nudist. My Wife-to-be {she's 42 & I'm 51}(she grew up living next door to me) and I guess sense we were brought up in that Life-style why would we think that sleeping with something on would be un-natural? On the other hand, that is the way we are at HOME. I also spend 8-10 weeks a year at Trade Conventions in places like Las Vegas and the comments about the cleanliness of the Hotel beds are valid. My solution is that I stay at the same place every time I go to Vegas, bring my own sheets and do my own laundery, ect. that way I know what the score is. As for the origional comments about being Nude while sleepwalking, ok. As for me, I don't think I would be embarassed about it sense I am ok with my body, besides....most of my business friends know of my Lifestyle and permit me this without being judgemental so If you out there are concerned about sleepwalking in the Nude or think you might be embarassed if caught, just change your lifestyle accordingly and We who are Nude sleepers will continue not to be worried about it.

I've slept in the nude since before I was married (that's 20+ years)and have never run outside in the buff because the fire alarm went off or an earthquake (in fact I slept through the last one) I also would like to know if there is any documented proof of someone sleeping in the nude actually catching something from a bedsheet in a hotel, because frankly in my understanding of how infections and other things such as lice, bedbugs or other parasites or transfered, you can still be infected even if you wear PJs.

It's not uncommon for a sleepwalker to undress during an episode. As a sleepwalker I've been stopped in the process (not in a hotel thankfully) and I've known other sleepwalkers who've come to realize they had been walking by waking up not dressed as they were when they went to bed. Needless to say, I'm not allowed anywhere near Ambien...

I use Ambien to help me sleep. When I wake up in the middle of the night, I am awake! I have no problem realizing I need to put pj's on. People that take meds like Ambien have trouble sleeping so I doubt that a person taking ambien would wake up in the middle of the night not knowing what is going on and make the rounds naked. If I wake up and need to go to the bathroom, I am so awake that I might as well stay up all night, with pj's on, lol. This is just my opinion.

Hey! Let's get real about sleeping naked or with clothing here! If you are comfortable sleeping with your partner naked, JUST DO IT! If it's cold, then add some clothing (your preferences). Duh? I am a former varsity swimmer and now play water polo, so I am comfortable with my body and can always find my boxer shorts, if there is some emergency situation that might arise. My wife and I enjoy sleeping together "in a state of nature and grace" and we taught our kids to KNOCK on the door before entering our bedroom. So, what's the BFD about sleeping naked with your spouse? As far as travel goes, I look great with or without my shirt on and I don't sleepwalk, so GET OVER what people do in the privacy of their bedrooms! Are you all Puritans out there or not?

Sleeping naked is extremely comfortable not to mention sexy. My husband and I are in our mid thirties and we both sleep in the nude every night. I get a cheap thrill by reaching over and grabbing his butt throughout the night. However, I do recommend naps during the day to catch up on missed sleep.

been sleeping in the buff since i could undress myself, got married and now my wife does the same. My parents did the same ......
It wasn't common to see them nude, but it wasnt unheard of either ....
we were always just taught as kids that there's nothing wrong or "dirty" about the human body, its beautiful, male or female. What constitutes Lewd or dirty is behaviour, not the body itself .....

I would love to sleep naked, but my wife thinks it's gross to sleep naked on the sheets. I don't wear underwear (not even boxers) to bed. I don't like to feel constricted in any way. I always wear the softest and loosest sleep shorts I can find.

I sleep in my briefs,in a recliner. I like sleeping in my briefs because it keeps my penis and testicles from getting squashed(when I sleep in a bed that is)I also usually sleep without covers or with a sheet all night. Ny wife sleeps with at least 3 layers of covers. that's one of the reasons she sleeps in a queensized bed and I sleep in a recliner. also it's easier for me to breathe.

I'm 65 and have been sleeping in the nude since my early twenties and cannot stand clothes on me when I am in bed. AND I don't think children seeing people in the nude does them any harm. That is unless some puritan pounds it into their heads that nudity is sinful and obscene...

I sleep in the nude at home but in my travels I have found that most hotels do not have clean beds. I have found hairs, and stains in some hotels that are supposed to be 5 star hotels. My under clothes may not provide much protection but it is better then nothing at all.

I don't see how sleeping naked could be dangerous, unless you're in prison or something!
I used to always sleep naked. Nowdays I am usually either naked or in panties and maybe a T-Shirt. Occasionally I may wear a gown, or sometimes if I am in a sexy mood I will wear some lingerie, even when I am alone. What I wear to bed just depends on my mood and maybe how warm/cold it is.
Whatever feels most comfortable at the time.

I do work so much that there are times that I don't even get undressed for bed because I am so tired, It is really uncomfortable, but I am just too tired to get undressed. Usually, I will be naked by the time I wake up, but not always. When that happens, I will usually get naked and just relax around the house, watching TV or whatever, just going about my normal day at home in comfort to make up for the bad sleep I got the night before because I was sleeping fully dressed.

I do not have kids, and I have never walked in my sleep (that I am aware of)

There is nothing wrong with nudity, especially when it is in the privacy of your own home or hotel room.

Don't knock it till you try it.

my boyfriend refuses to wear underwear. Even when wearing dress slacks. He said that they are uncomfortable. Any comments on this subject? He also sleeps in the nude!

There is nothing wrong with sleeping naked. Have done it for years. When I am traveling and sharing a room with another man, I always sleep in some type of pajama shorts. Or should I say, I try to sleep. Nothing wrong with nudity in the wrong context.

"(this kind of data tends to be evergreen)"

What does that mean?

I go to a college called Evergreen and it's got a... reputation of sorts and is it possible the writer is referring to that?

Neked is the only way to get a good nights sleep. My wife always wears clothes. Then she gets hot and throws the covers off. I always stay covered. It has not always been like this. When we had small children I slept with in my BVD's. Since we have no small children any longer, it's in the buff. Always wanted to be a nudist too, wife won't let me.

I agree with the one who said sleeping naked is insane! And not because all of you people do it, but who cares? Keep it to yourselves! Makes me sick by the way. I hope you're changing your sheets every day coz even in your own bed ... would you wear your underwear for more than a day? No. So why would you do it with your sheets? It's the same ...
And washing your sheets every day is such a waste of time and energy and so bad for the environment. Think about it. You can be much cleaner on a daily basis if you wore something in bed! And stopped pretending you feel so great naked. I find this truly disgusting ...

I am 62, my wife is 61, and we've been sleeping nude for 39 years. If it's really cold, she may wear a nightgown, but it is often off by morning! Ye, it is great to reach over and feel that warm body next to me!

Having worked as a night auditor for a competitor of Travelodge in Austin, TX I can a vow to the story of hotel sleep walkers. One night after midnight I had a guest ringing the night bell. When I checked the door, here was a 60+ yr old man with a box around his torso. He had sleep walked out of his room and ended up needing a key to get back in his room!! It was hilarious but I did feel sorry for the old guy. I gave him several towels to cover himself along with an additional key to get back into his room.
That being said, I have slept in the nude since my teens. I'm now 50 and cannot stand to have any clothing on in a bed with a sheet and blanket already covering me. I keep my robe on the bench at the end of the bed and it's the first thing I grab whenever I get out of bed, regardless of why. I think the title of this topic should have been "If you sleep walk, don't sleep naked" rather than implying it's dangerous to sleep naked. I've never had a dangerous moment sleeping in the buff and doubt I ever will.
Sweet Dreams are made of these....!!!

So sad we live in a society that is so upset with the human form. Nothing is more beautiful. We are so freaked out that we think nudity is sick and perverted, but I believe that we should be able to be nude anywhere and there should be no stigma attached. Children should not be raised with the shame they are stamped with by uptight parents. Adults should be free from guilt and shame and we would be a truly free society. Most of this comes from the Christians who would have everything natural be a sin. We are lucky to live right next to the only clothing optional public park in Texas and not only sleep in the nude but take my walks everyday that way. The sun and wind long to touch your skin and the gods meant it that way or you would have been born with clothes on.

Anonymous 729, if that was the case (i.e. if we had no rules set by society) we would have killed each other long time ago. There's a reason some things are illegal and other - morally wrong (I'm talking about what you refer to as 'sins' in Christianity)

Isn't anyone the least bit suspicious that these "sleepwalkers" are just exhibitionists using sleepwalking as a pretext for walking around a hotel in the nude? I think this statistic is a clue:

"According to Travelodge, the incidence of naked sleepwalking, which occurs almost exclusively among its male guests, has increased sevenfold in the past year."

Don't you think it's ALL about comfort levels ? There is NO right or wrong as long as the person sleeping is comfortable. If sleepwalking is an issue, it's going to be an issue whether naked or not and should be addressed accordingly. Caio for now ..

I sleep better when naked. Feels like I'm in a straight-jacket while sleeping. If a life-threatening situation does occur, I'll just slip on my pj's located next to my bed and run out of the house at the same time putting on my pj's
