TV Checkup

We're obsessed with television. As employees of America's number one health site, we often find ourselves questioning the medicine behind our favorite medical TV shows. Do the docs on ER and House really know their stuff? And just how common is that rare disease on last night's Grey's Anatomy?

Grey's Tale of Two Uteruses
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Two uteruses? I'm sure there are many women out there thinking one is plenty.

But this rare condition is exactly what one woman was dealing with on last night's Grey's Anatomy.

Of course her story was particularly spicy. Not only did she have two uteruses, she was pregnant with two babies. And I'm not talking your average set of twins. These babies were 6 weeks apart in age. And yes, that can happen too.

The exact name for this condition depends on what the woman has two of. Some women have double everything - uterus, cervix, and vagina. This is called uterus didelphys. Other women have two uteruses and cervix but only one vagina. This is called uterus duplex bicollis.

But the writers didn't stop there. The two babies actually had different fathers. And I have to admit that I had no idea that could really happen.

Just last year a woman in Romania had two uteruses and gave birth to twins two months apart. As far as I know they were from the same man. As far as I could tell, this is the only reported such case.

It is unusual for a woman to be able to get pregnant again once she's already pregnant. Usually a woman's hormones during pregnancy prevent her from ovulating and being able to get pregnant again.

However, it apparently can happen. I have to give kudos to Grey's writers for presenting such an extraordinary medical case that is actually based in reality. A woman pregnant with twins 6 weeks apart wasn't the only thing I had never heard of.

In other surgical plotlines ... Cristina scrubbed in on a surgery called the "humpty dumpty" procedure. I'd love to know where Grey's writers came up with that name.

The surgery is real and can be done to remove a heart tumor as in the man in last night's episode. It's called cardiac autotransplantation as mentioned by his informed wife. He likely had a cardiac myoxma, the most common type of heart tumor.

But if anyone can figure out where the nursery rhyme reference came from, please share.

I am guessing that they referenced it as such because they take the heart out of the body, fix it, and put it back together again like Humpty Dumpty? Just a guess...but the actor was not on a cardiopulmonary bypass machine. I don't know what was going on there.

This is not a tale but a true case. Only certain animals chew card, i have never heard of a human case. At least i know two people who can chew curd and are from the same family. I wonder what kind of abnormality this is? May be the doctors can ponder on this one and give us a clue.

I am such a person who has uterus didylphis. I went through a 38 week pregnancy a few years ago and have a healthy 3 year old. He was small at birth which was pegged as being from being in a small uterus but otherwise healthy. The doctors kept a close eye on things for the whole term.

It doesn't matter whether the medical story lines are true or not as long as they keep Patrick Dempsy in them! What a hunk!!

I have heard of a case where a women had a set of twins but each child had a different father, and that could only happen if the two children were conceived within 24 hours of each other. But I would like to know if the cardiac autotransplantation is really nicknamed a Humpty Dumpty surgery.

Just curious from a medical standpoint , if you have uterus didylphis. Can you acheive two orgasm's simultaneously? I have never heard of that and I wasn't sure if there was any scientific proof that confirmed it.

The double uterus thing is not THAT rare, a lot of women including myself have a double or split uterus(bicornuate). They can get pregnant two different times within the first few weeks, however that is a little more unlikely to happen.

I knew of a lady with two uterus; she lost one baby but carried the other to term. Her doc was kind of a country bumpkin who would always call in all the nurses to "see this!" She felt like she was being treated like carnival sideshow attraction.

I have two uterus but did not even know until I had my tubed tied - all four of 'em! I live in a part of the world where untrasound was not available. My babies were both premature and small but healthy. One was a breech delivery, the other surgery due to placenta praevia.
Did you know this condition is hereditary? My youngest daughter has two uterus ( or should it be uteri? ) but differs from me in that she has only 2 fallopian tubes.

I find it very interesting actually that this condition is a reality. I, being a mid teen, have a joke with a friend that she hit me so hard that she split/doubled my uterus.Even though she couldn't have actually split my uterus I cannot wait to explain to her that the condition occurs in reality and is not even too rare. This is my favorite new thing i learned today!

the humpty dumpty reference had to do with taking the heart apart and putting it back together again. This was actually mentioned in the show, but don't remember who said it.

I also have a double-uterus (uterus didelphys).
I am currently pregnant with my 1st baby (24 weeks). I have an ultrasound every 2 weeks, and have been watched closely due to this condition as well as being 35 years of age.
So far, so good; baby looks perfect & healthy :0)
*I have been told that the double-uterus condition occurs about 1 in every 100,000 women. Most women that have it probably don't even know about it.
*And the answer is an unfortunate "No" on the simultaneous orgasm. That question really makes no sense, though it would be nice...

I am yet another who has uterus didelphys -
Also, another anomaly that usual comes hand in hand with uterus didelphys is being born with one kidney. I only have my left one and its larger than an average kidney. I had no problems and did not find all of this out until I was 26 and trying to conceive. My doctor treats 5 other women just like me so, its not as rare as one might think.

Just curious, but I don't think that babies concieved in different uteruses at different times are twins- regardless of wheather the uteruses are in the same person or not. Sure, there are dizygotic twins (two eggs, two sperms), but conception is basically simultaneous, and the babies share the same uterus. I don't think that babies concieved six weeks apart and by totally different sexual acts can be called twins by any stretch of the imagination- a moot point really, but certainly an oversight.

I had never heard of a split uterus until I was told I had a split uterus when I had an ultra sound at 52 y.o. There are identical female twins every second generation and my mom was a twin. I was born breech, feet first in 1941. Mom's generation is all deceased...I'm going to let my two daughters know eventhough neither will have any more children. I wonder if any anomolies would show up in my son?

I have uterus didelphys and was told by my gyno that it is not possible to have separate pregnancies so far apart as in the Grey's case. As far as the woman referenced in giving birth to twins a few months apart, if it's the same story I read, one twin was doing poorly, so they took him early and left the other one to grow longer. Of course, I don't know that anyone really knows that much about this condition, so I guess anything is possible! The best way to prevent spaced out pregnancies would be to have intercourse on the side already pregnant, wouldn't you think? Oh, well, we are unique and special!

I just had a lapascopy and hystroscopy for blocked tubes and possible endometriosis. They found I have two uteruses and two cervixes. I didn't know either that this could happen until told this week. My tubes were fine and I had one spot of endometriosis that they took care of at the time. My Mom said the doctors were so big and her face was just priceless when she came out to talk to them. My husband has been calling me his "Alien Wife". I didn't know that was going to be the case, I thought everything was what we thought it was --- scare tissue or blockage. Just amazing what happens in the body when conceived.

Im not sure if anyone still looks at this, but Im not sure where else to go and ask these questions. I have two uteruses and two cervixes. I also have bicuspid aortic valve, which means I have two sections in my heart instead of three. Im getting married in september and Im starting all these infertility things to see if I can carry and so on. My question is, if anyone similar to the defects that I have had carried a child successfully with minimal or no complications. Any info anyone can give me would be very helpful and I appreciate it.

okay... first of all I have a bicornate uterus, which means I also have to... in reference to what the lady earlier said about "the best way to prevent multiple pregnancies is to have intercourse on the side thats allready pregnant" How is that possible when, theres only one hole?? lol, any way, the baby is in the uerus, and a mans penis, doesnt reach ALL the way to the uterus to have intercourse in, the sperm find their way through the tubes, soo their is definetly not a way to decide which side you get pregnant in... I have a double uterus, and I have had two misscarriages in the past year. Mine however, is separated by a wall, straight down the middle... with double uterus's and thats it, not double vaginas.

I recently found out I have a bi-cournuate uterus. My md did not know a lot and my gyno was very evasive with answers. My understanding is that my uteruses are shaped differently than normal. Any ideas if that effects how difficult it is to conceive and carry to term. Anybody have a name of a good gyno in Spfld MO

I too have a double uterus and double cervix - my uteri are half size (they say my uterus split in two and sealed itself. - i have one ovary on each uterus - i used to have a divider (membrane) than ran between the cervix's down the vagina. I had it removed when i was 18 - so i guess technically i had two vagina's as well. i am just recently considering conceiving and after reading other comments am hopeful of being successful.

My mother had 2 uteruses. I was conceived in the larger one, and 2 years later my sister in the smaller one. Another 2 years later my mother conceived in the larger uterus and again 6 weeks later in the smaller one. The baby in larger one didn't make it. It is possible to have 2 uteruses and get pregnant up to 6 weeks apart!!!! (Yes, they were all the same father)

I am also a member of the bicorunate uterus club. i found out when i was around 5 due to some unfortunate circumstances.i had a septum all the way down the vagina.i have two cervixes and a septum seperating my uterus. i am now 21 and i am almost 30 weeks pregnant with my second son.my first son was born by c-section because he was breech only 2 days before he was due with no complications at all he is now almost 19 months. My second pregnancy has been more painfull but most second pregnancies are. i have had no troubles conceiving. and hopefully this pregnancy will be as uneventful as the first as far as premature births are concerned.

I'm sure nobody reads this anymore, but I thought I should throw my story in too. I have uterus didelphys that wasn't diagnosed until I was pregnant with my son. I was told by a Perinatologist (high-risk OB) that I had nothing to worry about because most people with this condition deliver healthy, full-term babies. Well, my son was born at 25 weeks gestation, and spent three and a half months in the NICU. He is fine now, and healthy as they come...but I wish I had been a little more forewarned. Just so you know, things aren't always the way doctors say they will be....especially when it's a sort of rare condition.

Hello fellow didelphys club members. This is my story: I am 25 years of age and found out that I have 2 full functioning uteri about 2 years ago. I had been getting my pap exams done by my Primary care doctor and was told by a friend that my menstral pain should not be tolerated and I should get checked out by a "real" doctor- so I found an OBGyn and made an appointment. She was very thorough, ordered blood tests and pelvic/ vaginal ultrasonic imaging, also imaging of both kidneys should be included, along with a vaginal exam. So the conclusion is that I have 2 Uteri, 2 Cervixes, and a septate within my 1 Vagina, yes that's 1 Vagina. I work with a bunch of women and we are pretty close so I brought the ultrasound picture in for giggles, well when the episode of Grey's hit TV, I got cornered at work and was signing autographs for a couple weeks. But all fun aside, I am concerned for when I start having children and I am trying to educate myself as best I can. While my OBGyn is very thorough, I am the only one within her clinic with a didelphys and I don't want to be someone's "first" when it comes to pregnancy... so while referrals are not permitted, are there any support groups for Mullerian Duct Abnormalities out there?

I have a bicornuate uterus also, and I wanted to give a little info to those of you who had posted with questions or concerns. I only have a septum in my uterus, nothing else is duplicated. although they are not really sure how far my uterus is divided. They believe it is only partial...so basically I have a heart shaped uterus. apparently this is the most common form of the condition, and alot of women don't even know they have it. I didn't get diagnosed until I was already pregnant, so clearly I had no trouble concieving. This varies greatly in the condition depending on how fully your uterus is divided or duplicated. Some women will have issues with carrying a child to full term with this condition because of growth restrictions in the uterus. If you know you have the condition and are not seeing a high risk pregnancy doctor of some sort (I saw a maternal-fetal medicine specialist who gave very frequent ultrasounds on top of my regular o/b appts)I highly recommend it. He gave me more info and had an answer to every question I had. For those of you who are recently diagnosed and are pregnant and trying to concieve, I do want you to know it is definitly not all bad!! I got a lot of extra ultrasounds, so I got to see my baby developing from very early on. Also, I am currently 34 weeks today and my baby is showing no significant growth restrictions. (just a cautionary note, I was admitted to the hospital twice due to having contractions, and am currently on a prescription in order to keep them from coming)

Well, I didn't have two totally separate uterus (uteri?) just a septum, but I am little as well and had the same experience of one side thinking it was pregnant and the other side figuring it out later. I had a good deal of spotting (almost a regular period) for about the first three months. At first I was concerned about being pregnant in one and the other getting pregnant later, but was told that that isn't really possible because once you have a fertilized egg that has attached to the uterine lining your hormones stop egg production. That is pretty much the same reason your nonpregnant uterus thinks it is, from what I understand. Your hormones trigger the build up of the lining, and they circulate through your whole body so it doesn't exclude one uterus. Just a side note for you, at about three and a half months I went to the bathroom and it looked like my uterine lining on the unpregnant side had shed itself. I didn't realize that at the time of course and thought I had miscarried and called my dr. They of course did an ultrasound to check but they told my it was kinda normal if you are divided significantly or totally. Hope this helps! BTW I am 22, 5'4" and 105(before baby!) and delivered a healthy baby boy at 37 weeks on Dec. 2.

It doesn't seem as rare as the doctors make it sound. I live in a town in Iowa of about 30,000 people and my doctor said she has six patients with it. I am one of them. I heard about a high chance of miscarriage. Has anyone experienced this? I am 20 so I won't have kids for a few more years, but am nervous to due to the rumors of miscarriage later on in the pregnancy. Also, she said I need an ultrasound so they can know more about it then they do now. I don't feel the need to get one until I decide to start having kids, is this a good idea or should I go now?

I just wanted to say thank you to Christina from above. You have given some very helpful information...information that I can relate to. I'm 30 & I also have a bicornuate uterus. I just found out after having severe abdominal pains in the very early weeks of my pregnancy (no spotting). I am now estimated at 5 weeks and 6 days pregnant. I am hoping to get a little more reassurance that we are OK at my next ultrasound in 2 weeks. This is our 1st pregnancy and we had no trouble conceiving.

I too have a bicornate uterus or a septate uterus. I have had four previous misscarriages and was told I needed surgery to remove the septate which would boost odds of full term pregnancy from 20% to 80%. After my own research my husband and I decided to hold of on surgery and try once more. (Surgery can cause scar tissue which doesn't allow for the baby to absorb nutrients thru. The same is true if the baby attaches on the septate. It's been a long 2.5 years and I'm finally pregnant again. I'm the farthest I've ever got at almost 12 weeks and can only hope and pray everyday that everything will be okay.

I am 40yrs old now and I have 2 daughters. I found out when I was 19 that I have DOUBLES.My doctor told me it would be hard to get preg! Wrong. When I gave birth to my first child(full term)everything was fine. She was in my left uterus. My septum tore out while giving birth. So instead of having 2 vaginas I have one BIG one. I only wanted one child but then 6yrs later and on birth control I was preg in my right uterus and was still ovulating in my left uterus.Doctors told me not to have sex for fear of getting preg in the other side.My poor husband! Well everything was fine. I kinda laugh about the past cause when I was in 10th grade I told my health teacher that I had 2 super plus tampons and I still was leaking and needed a pad. Now I know that I was only plugging up the one side and not the other. Good luck to all.

I have a bi cornate uterus that is almost two complete uteri and two complete vaginas and one extra tube I have not yet found out what condition my kidneys are in but am finding that the more I see a doctor the more I find out how severe things really are. I found out when I was 18 about the uterus anomally and had two children unfortaatlly they both came very early I am currently 23 weeks and am praying for a healthy child even though I know the risks I know how far medical science has come to helpiung a developing child I have had ultrasounds every two eeks scince I was about 13 weeks and now because the baby is growing slow they want to put me in the hospital. This is a very serious condition not to be taken litely ecspesially if you are planning on haveing children sometimes I wonder if its worth the risk but I am very happy knowing I will soon have a baby to snuggle with. I would give anything in the world for one that I could hold on to past 32 weeks that in my world would be a miricle.

I do not have two uteruses, but I have been diagnosed with a bicornuate uterus. They didn't actually realize I had one till they were in the middle of my c-section and checked out my reproductive organs to make sure they were healthy. They told me that they discovered I had a bicornuate uterus with one side large enough to carry a smaller sized baby and one side approximately the size of an egg, and one horn was nearly non-existent I delivered my 7 lb. 4 oz. daughter at 39 weeks in perfect condition and she's been as healthy as a horse ever since. To the lady that was 9 1/2 weeks pregnant...that posted on 2-14-08...I was never pregnant with twins, but I carried my daughter with no problems and only realized after the delivery that I had a bicornuate uterus, so I hope this is of some encouragement to you!

Update to the last comment...I am 28 years old...I became pregnant very quickly with my daughter (at 25), but my attempts at doing so this time around have been slow and nerve-racking. I did want to mention that I too had heavy cramping at the beginning of my pregnancy, but I was ignorant until later and just assumed they were Braxton Hicks contractions. They lasted for the first 3-4 months during the usual would have been menstrual time. I also wanted to ask if anyone else had one sided contractions. When I went in labor with my daughter the evening before my scheduled c-section, my contractions started very low, but once they worked their way up, they were very intense on my left side and non-existent on my right. My daughter was transverse with her head sticking out forward about 4 inches, just about an inch below my left breast, and her feet were on my right hip. She was delivered 39 weeks, 7 lbs. 4 oz., and 20 inches long.

Definately going to a specialist before trying again. They found the septum during my 2nd C-SECTION!!! why they couldn't see it during the first? Stupid doctor. Poor kid, @nd one came out severly bruised from being so squished. Any body have pregnancy experience after having their septum removed?

I also have this condidtion, a split uterus, 2 cervix, two sets of tubes, i got pregnent and carried a healthy baby to term although she was breech and delivered by C section, 2 years later i got pregnent again, i had just found out i had a a split uterus, i was then monitored closly with lots of ultrasounds, but again with NO problems I carried to term but again my baby was breech and delivered by C section, I was told the baby didnt have the space to turn around, as it only had one side of my uterus, both pregnencies were in the same side, and i really didnt have any scary problems, I wouldnt believe anything you see on tv, true or not it may be, why work your selfe up, talk to your doctor,
To the girls with this NORMAL contition it does not mean we are not healthy, just know your condidtion if you want to get pregnent. my prgnencies were so normal i woulnd not have even known i had this, if it werent for an appointment to put an IUD in,,,that did not work,,,
There are risks with any pregnany.
Is thier anybody who has had something go wrong with thier pregneany because of this condidtion??? I would like to know because i do plan to have another baby and it doesnt hurt to know others expieriences...

My baby was expected to be small, but through celestone shots, constant monitoring, and bedrest from 30 weeks was delivered perfectly at 37 weeks. ( I did have early labor at 31 weeks, but after a medevac ride & a few days in the hospital, labor was stopped & I returned home.) I really want to have another baby, but my husband refuses because of the complications, and frankly, I'm scared too. I'd blame myself if something happened. My high risk doc says I'd be ok, but, again, is it worth the risk? Advice would be great!

I just turned 20 and found out over 8 months ago that I have two uterus, two cervix, two vaginas, but only one set of fallopian tubes and therefore eggs. I found out when I went in for my pap and my doctor did a double take. There are two holes from the outside. lol.

It was funny because I'm currently taking a class on human sexuality and so my research has shown that there are MANY different types of abnoralities. The all encompassing name is Mullerian anomolies. Also that they may be abnoralities that aren't THAT abnormal. My general doctor said that they see one about once a month. That month they had found three. When I went to a specialist in SD, he told me how 2/3 of women who are having problems conceiving or getting pregnant are due to one of these abnoralities. Now, that does not necessarily mean you'll have a hard time getting pregnant.

I would recomend finding a doctor who's seen this many times over or at least talk to one. They can give you a lot of information.

With miscarriages and premature births, my doctor said that the average women w/ one of these types has their birth 10 weeks early! That's kind of crazy. So some are on the upper half and are fine, others will have more difficulty. Definitely go get an ultrasound, you learn a lot, they can show you what's going on, plus it just really cool to be able to see it, pregnant or not.

I hope that answers some questions. (PS- I was one of those girls that tampons didn't work for, now I know why)

I also have 2 Uteruses. I was told that's I could never have a baby. Well not long after I was told that I found out that I was pregnant. Everything went good. Well 2 years later I got pregnant again and I was about 2mos. I started bleeding I when to the Hospital they did an ultrasound and I found out that I was still pregnant but I also was pregnant in my left uteruses. But I was losing the baby. But the baby in my right uteruses was OK. And now is 2yrs and doing very well.

I have a Bicornuate uterus and my husband and I have been trying for about a year now and still nothing is happening. My doc says there are several filling defects that are seen within the endometrial canal on the left side. Does anyone else have this poblem and has had a baby or no problem getting pregnant? If so, did you get a type of surgery to fix it and had no problem getting pregnant after?

When my granmother was on her second pregnancy in 1962, she went through her normal checkups with her dr. When she gave birth, they were expecting my uncle, and when he was born, it was a joyous occasion! A healthy, normal sized/weight baby boy! What no one was expecting was for another baby to be in there! My mom was tucked behind my uncle and the drs had no idea she was there. She weighed just 1 lb 14 oz. She was born on Feb 4th and didn't come home until her 'due date' sometime in April. I always thought it was weird when my mom and grandmother told me that she concieved while pregnant, but this just proves that it can happen! I'm not sure if my grandmother had a second uterus. But I'm inclined to discuss this new found info with her!

This is all very interesting to me. I found out today that I have a bicorunate uterus and therefore I one have a very hard time getting pregnant and two will probably need to undergo invitro. But just in case, does anyone have a similar situation and would be willing to give advice on how to concieve having a bicorunate uterus without having to undergo the pricey invitro way? Thanks in advance!
