Threads -- And We Don't Mean Clothes!
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Okay, here is what our current threaded view looks like on WebMD boards:

And HERE is what the new threads will look like when you open them:

Check out those new features!

Let's take them one-by-one:

Your Image

The image you choose for your Persona page will now show up on your posts! And, if you don't want to upload your own image, we'll have a selection of avatars you can choose:

Rate Post

You will now also be able to rate the posts of your choice if you feel the content has been helpful to you.

If you hover over each of the five stars, you'll see that you can choose from 1) helpful, 2) very helpful, 3) extremely helpful, 4) bookmark worthy, and 5) best ever.

You simply click the star of your choice to rate the post. Each member will only be able to rate each post once. This is to prevent misuse of the tool.

Please keep in mind that rating is not a way of determining the most popular members on the board. Or, even the most popular posts. It's to show that you found the post helpful so that others might be able to find it and use the information as well.

You probably won't have reason to rate every single post on a board. (And who would have time to do that, anyway?)

Here are examples of some posts that might be rate-worthy:

* Motivational Posts
* Great Recipes
* Excellent Polls
* Good, Sage Advice
* A Story That May Help Others
* A Great Question & Good Member Responses

And, here are examples of post you probably would NOT want to rate:

* Just Saying "Hi"
* Roll Calls
* Here Are My Stats (weight loss, pregnancy calendar, child's birthdays)
* General Chit-Chat
* Off-Topic Posts

Remember, you don't have to be logged in to read posts on our boards, but you will need to be logged in to post, reply, or rate a post.

Some members on the boards have expressed worry that they will feel "judged" by the ratings. Everyone has a lovely and unique voice on our boards and ALL of your posts are appreciated. Some of your posts may not be rated and some of them may. If our moderators see any evidence that this rating system is being used by anyone to cause pain to another person, they will step in and take care of the problem.

You will not have to compose like a professional writer. You simply need to continue posting the way you always have, sharing that unique voice. If everyone starts trying to compose an award-winning dissertation, things are going to get pretty darned boring around our boards.

Be yourself. Love yourself. Don't be discouraged. Before long, this rating thing will be old hat and everyone will used to it. Change takes time to adjust to.

Share This

You'll also notice a Share This button at the bottom of each post. When you click the words, an "Email a Friend" window will pop up, and you can send the link to that post to someone you feel might like it.

Add to Favorites

When you click into the Add to Favorites button at the bottom of a post, you'll get a little box popup that will allow you to choose which of your personal folders you'd like to save it in. This is what it will look like:

You will have already created your folders inside your Persona page. When you add your Favorites, they will be viewable to you on the private view of your Persona.

Report Post

Another great new tool we're offering to our members is a way to report posts that you feel are inappropriate. You'll only be able to report a post once. The report tool will alert our moderator staff quickly that a post may be a problem.

Once a certain number of members have reported the post, it will be hidden from the board.

A moderator will take a look and decide if the post violates WebMD's Terms of Use. If it does, it will be permanently removed. If it doesn't, the mod will add it back to the board.

Once the moderator has approved the post, it cannot be hidden again. This keeps posts or members from being targeted by trolls.

So, how does it look and sound so far? Tell us what you think!

And, keep up with the blog. Over the weekend, we'll be showing you how to edit your Persona page as well as some of the nifty new tools you'll get when posting and replying to messages.

I don't think I will like it. I couldn't see the "promo" page very well but it looks like we can't read an entire thread all at once like we can now.

I hope the mods will at least answer e-mails asking why a post was deleted. Deletions are curretnly so random and subjective, and nobody will ever tell you why or what rule you broke. Even if you really don't know! No way to ask - if you ask on the board, it's deleted, If you send and e-mail and ask (like you're supposed to be able to) you never get an answer.

For anonymous at 7:19 p.m. -- Posts on our site are removed because they violate our Terms and Conditions in some way. Our moderators do not remove posts just because they feel like it.

If you have written to ask why a post was removed and did not receive an answer it may be because your email did not go through. Please try writing directly to webmdcommunity@webmd.net.

I'd also ask you to keep your questions to the functionality of the new community features to keep the conversation here on topic. The way we moderate our site is not going to change.

Regards,
Leona

Hi spokn4!

Yes, we'll continue to have emoticons and we've even added a few more.

I'll be posting some more information in just a bit that will include how to edit your personal home page (persona) and also what new features you'll have when posting/replying on the boards.

I think the rate-a-post is a huge mistake. I can guarantee you there will be cat fights, hurt feelings, and members stomping off, never to return, as a result of this totally unnecessary feature.

I HATE HATE HATE the idea of ratings. Just thinking about it makes me want to leave the boards right now.

I also am very concerned about the ability to read conversations in this new format. Right now the current software doesn't handle complex conversations very well. The OLD software from a few years ago did a much better job. Now it looks like its going to be formatted like a simple question and answer board.

Have they at least tested it with a free-for-all conversation?

Well guys...I hear you on rating, but we don't HAVE to rate any of them:), we can just boycot the whole idea....but there will always be someone somewhere who either doesn't understand this or even know to boycot it (case in point: like a newbie).

Just my 2 cents.

Hi anonymous at 3:10 p.m.!

It's not going to be a simple question and answer format. The look is different, but the functionality is the very same. When you click into a thread, you'll see the full, robust conversation going on.

We're going to be putting up a test board for everyone to play with very soon, so you'll get to see how it works.

will the threads roll up to the top of the main page if there are new replies or will it continue to work the way the new ones without bumping?

Hi Irisheyes213!

No, we will not have that functionality at this time. I'm not sure it's available with this software, but I can find out.

My name is Ruth Brown
I filled out my profile on the Persona page just for the fun of it. Then it said that it would be transferred to my new profile when it launched. I do not like the new profile I put in. I was just having fun. Plus what is 15 tags. I like my old profile and do not want it changed. Please e-mail the answer at Brown4homes@aol.com

Is it going to be a question and answer format or wil we be able to say what we feel, like now.

I do not like the ratings. There will be hurt feelings. I like the softer colors.

I never received an e-mail at the bottom. Anyway, I filled out my Persona and it said my old profile will be sent over. I like my new Persona better and I do not want my old Profile.How is that going to work?
I like the softer colors. However, I do not like the ratings. If a person does not like me they will always give poor ratings. Ruth Brown

I went back to the discussions where I wanted to post. The place where we can post tonight. I had posted. I went back to see what else I wanted to post on and they disappered, all except 3. Is this a mistake or is this the way it is to be.
