Post of the Day: Animals Sense Pregnancy?
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Does your pet know that you're PG? WebMD member Beadlady78 from our Pregnancy: 2nd Trimester message board says her parakeet sensed what was going on in her expanding tummy.

Did your pet seem to know when you were pregnant? What was his reaction?

Read Beadlady78's post and share your own stories.

Animals sensing your pg

This is really cute. DH and I have a parakeet. We take her out everyday and talk to her and she sits on us while we watch movies and stuff. Well, on Saturday DH thought it would be funny to have her sit on my baby bump. He put her there and she would not get off! Any time DH tried to take her off, she would bite him and she is not the biting type of bird. While she was on my tummy, she would lean down as far as she could without touching my skin. Is this animal instinct that she knows I am pg or I am just loosing it! I know its just a bird, but she has NEVER acted this way before!

My Cat Does not like anyone but me, except in the rare occation a PG female comes around.
Now I hand raised this kitten casue his mother was killed when he was very young, and I'm not sure if its a smell or an instinct or something.. But when PG Person come's to my house, even if they are very early in ther pregancy, he simply will not leave them alone..
Climbing up on them.. needing at there stomach, and eventualy laying down on them and purring as loud as he can.. The odd part about all this?

My cat hates everyone, but me.. except for women who are pregnant..

Sign,
Cat Dad

So I don't think its odd for your bird to act strangly.. I think they can tell there is a change going on..

My dog doesn't normally sniff crotches, but when my sister was pregnant my dog wouldn't leave her alone. In addition to the sniffing, my pup liked to crawl up on here when she was sitting on the floor.

I think they can tell.

In response to the poster with the dog who sniffed, remember that a dog's snese of smell is more than 200 x more acute than a person's. So it is entirely possible the dog can sense/smell hormonal changes being emitted from a pregnant female.
Now the parakeet is fascinating-I used to have birds and none of mine did anything like that.

My dog drove me NUTS when I was PG. The very first week I was actually PG she was up in my face, on my lap, and would not leave my side. I was worried, had no idea what it was about! Turns out she knew I was PG before I even did. Since it was my first PG I had no idea. Then I put it all together! It was awesome, very sweet thing to share with my best friend. She found out before me or my DH!!!

I had a normal dog until I got pregnant. Then she turned mean and started snapping at me, jumping on me, and purposely messing on the floor. Unfortunately I had to make the hard decision to take her to the shelter because I was afraid she might hurt me. So yes I would say that animals can definitely tell when you're pregnant.

I think they know. My cat will not leave me alone! She wants to be sitting on or next to me at all times and started this when I got pregnant. She's driving me nuts.

My daughter is nearly 2 1/2 years. My cat, Willow, is nearly 3. He was six months old when his mother died, and seven months old when my daughter was daughter was born. Within that one month, he did not miss one chance to lie on my baby bump, and that expression on his face when she kicked him was hilarious. He is hardly ever on my belly now. Whether its knowing that you are pregnant or just knowing that you smell different, they know that something is up and that you need the friendship.

My dog was two years old when I was pregnant. He was still very much the puppy but then he changed and stated acting like the care giver... He wouldn't leave my side and he'd like me when ever i had any skin exposed.
It was awesome that he knew I was about to be a mommy.

Every since I became pregnant by 2 cats follow me throughout the house. One would already follow me most of the time while the other was very independant. Now I can't go anywhere in the house without them following me. I sit on the couch, they sit either on me or beside me. I go to bed and they follow me. I can't even have a shower without them wanting to be in the room.

OH yeah. When I was pregnant my cat, who never lets anyone pick her up, suddenly wanted me to do so. constantly. And she would lay on my stomach. The funny thing is, she started this before I even knew I was pregnant! And never acted this way again.

When I get morning sickness, my dog would be right there in the room giving me a look like are you ok. I would have to say I was fine before he would stop looking at me.

When i was pregnant my two cats would take turns watching me and there were certain set times a day that they would switch positions but they wouldn't even go to the bathroom unless i was in there or the other cat came in to give them a break. they wouldn't sleep or eat, they just would stare at me all the time and if i left they would sit by the door until i came back. funny thing is that at the time i didn't know i was pregnant (i ended up miscarrying twins).

when i was pregnant with my first child my dog would lay in my lap with his head on my belly-if my fiance tried to get near me-especially my belly- my dog would snap at him-he had never done that before and only did it when i was pregnant this was all before my bump showed up and before the kicking and moving started- since i had the baby he never did that again until i got pregnant with my second child and it all started again the same way. i had 2 very early miscarriages also and before i miscarried he was the same way and stuck right by my side 24/7 until i was back to normal through all 4 of the pregnancies- definately knew i was pregnant and he made sure nobody but him was getting close to my belly-he was very protective of his mommy and soon to be baby brother and sister

I love reading these post! As of now, I am only a mommy to my 3 year old Shih Tzu. DH and I always wonder how she will respond when I do become PG. I have no doubt that she will be very protective and loving. Thanks for the great post.

Animals are usually extremely friendly and cuddly with me. When I was pregnant, I knelt down and held my hand out to a strange dog, fully expecting that he would sniff it and be at ease. Oh, he sniffed it, then he immediately started barking his head off and growling at me! Never having had this experience before, I was surprised and blamed my pregnancy for making me smell strange, haha! After reading these posts, I wonder if maybe I was right?

At 12 weeks I went to see my mom, her chihuahua who I helped rescue is not normally very social with me but while I was there she stayed by my side constantly as if she was my protector. My chihuahua however has had mixed reactions. At first she was afraid of my belly, now she likes laying on it for the most part

In 2007 I found out i was PG. i was about 6wks. Penny(german shepherd/siberian husky)was only 8months old, a week later she started period! I thought that was strange. But when i got to 11wks. i had a miscarriage and she had stopped her period. And her hyper-go-lucky attitude changed, she seemed sad & didn't want to play. I think she felt the loss of our baby.

I do think pets sense when you are pregnant my nurse even confirmed it! I have a 6 mo. old puppy he is half chiguagua/ half miniature bull terrier, and he does not leave me alone. I'm 8 weeks pregnant and he always wants to be next to me or he will lay his head on my stomach. When my husband calls him he just lifts his head and goes back to his same spot and he loves my husband but now completely ignores him.

I'm 33 weeks PG. We have a cat who we got when I was only 14 weeks PG. He normally isn't needy or very loving if anything he's a little brat and for the most part entertains himself but last week we got a bunch of baby stuff... swing, stroller, crib, play pin,etc... and he has been more underfoot than ever! He sleeps in the crib, the play pin and on the stroller. He never liked sleeping in the bed with us before we got the baby stuff and now he meows at the door if we don't let him in our room at night where he MUST sleep next to me on the body pillow that I use between my legs. I think he's worried about not being the baby anymore altho I keep telling him he'll always be my baby boy. I believe all animals know whats going on based on how we act as well as their animal senses tell them things that we will never know.

I am not sure if I am pregnant or not but I have a cat and she is so mello, quite and stays in her travel home that we have for her to use. As I sit in front of the computer writing this, I can see my cat just sleeping in her travel carrier. Is this normal or she just want to sleep? Any advise?

I have 3 dogs a chiuaua(sorry for the spelling) and bulldog and a chow mix with something else. Everytime I move even if it is just an inch they look up and stare at me for 10 mins. I do not know if i am pregnant I am 5 days late for my time of the month this month and last month was only 3 days. My chow mix (lucky) will always jump up, put his paws on my stomach then lean his head in. My bulldog (harley) and chiuaua(scooby) will follow me everywhere even into the bathroom when i'm taking a bath or when im actually going. I dont know what it is, but even while i'm typing this Harley(the bulldog) is watching me and so is Scooby. Lucky has his head on my stomach. ((I'm on a laptop and sitting on the floor))
