WebMD Registration Changes
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Hello WebMD Members!

Thanks for dropping by the community blog. If you are a registered member of WebMD.com, we have some important information to share with you. Being a registered member means you signed up for an account and have a member nickname that follows you around when you log in.

We are preparing to launch some updates to our registration system that may affect the way you log in to our site. If you have more than one account with us under the same email address, you will want to read the information below closely.

And check out the following FAQs for more information.

Happy Posting!
Leona

What's happening?
WebMD will soon be launching an update to our registration system. These updates will allow us to greatly enrich your WebMD experience.

When will this change occur?
The scheduled date for this registration system update is 12/12/2008 (please note this date has been changed), and is subject to change.

How will I be notified?
You will receive an email about a week before the changes go into effect, reminding you to be on the watch for those changes.

What will change for me?
1. The first time you log in after the registration update, we'll need a few minutes of your time to confirm your account profile and the data already on file.

2. From that point on, when you log in to WebMD you will always use the email address on your account. If you've been logging in with a "User Login" name, you'll need to start using your email address instead. If you've already been logging in with your email address, there will be no change.

You're getting rid of the "User Login" name, but what about my Screen Name?
The Screen Name on your account will stay the same as it was before, and will continue to be displayed when you participate in community areas, such as message boards and chat rooms.

What if I have more than one account, in order to post comments with more than one Screen Name?
You can continue to use and create multiple accounts, but each account will need a different email address. The first time you log in with each additional account, if the email address for that account is not unique, we'll ask you to enter a different one. Each accounts email address will need to be validated through the process noted above.

What will happen to comments I've already posted?
All of the comments you've posted in the past will be unaffected by these system changes.

I'm concerned about my personal information. Are there any privacy issues created by these registration system enhancements?
No. WebMD is committed to your privacy. For more information about our privacy practices, please visit http://www.webmd.com/policies/about-privacy-policy.

If you have any further questions or would like to provide feedback, please use the Contact Us link at the bottom of every page. The WebMD Customer Care Team is ready to serve you Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (EST).

Staff Note: This blog post has been updated to reflect a change in the date that this new registration process will begin.

Uhm, so I'll be the one to ask the dumb question... The email says "account profile information". "My Profile" on my screen says, "No Profile yet" -- So what exactly would I be re-verifying? LOL

Hi Anonymous!

The profile information is your WebMD registration profile, not your message board profile. This will ensure that the information you used to open your account is correct and that your email address (which will now become your user name) is correct as well.

The BIG question is WHY?? No change is ever made to make things better. Changes are to 1. fix errors or 2. gain more control. Your altruiwstic opener doesn't ring true. Again--WHY??

LMAO - you really think we are going to re-register???
I've nevr heard of a site asking its members to join again, especially a site with the integrity of WebMD.

most times the reason to re-register is to track users and sell their info or to market to a target demographic

Nothing was said about REregistering.......just about confirming what your profile already says.

So our email is becoming our user name? Does this mean our email will suddenly be visible with every post? That every post will show user@server.com? For the sake of my inbox, I sure hope not.

Blogger Leona_WebMD said...

Hi everyone!

You won't have to re-register at all. We're simply trying to make the registration system a bit more simple than it has been in the past. Right now, you have to create a unique username, which you use to log into our site. And, you also create a screen name that appears when you post on our boards or use our chat rooms.

Unfortunately, lots of folks have had a hard time remembering those unique usernames. Most sites these days have gone to email addresses to help simplify the process.

Your Screen Name is what will show up on your posts as it does now. Your email address will not.

I hope this helps explain. :-)

If you have further questions, you can also write to our Customer Service department, linked in the FAQ above.

Take care,
Leona

Thanks Leona. Explaining that in the original announcements would have saved a lot of upset and confusion.

my problem is that I haven't been able to post a blog or message on a board lately because I coudln't sign in since I couldn't remember my password to loggin. WebMD would give me a temporary password but it would never let me make my own new password. So I haven't been able toreply to any posts, etc. or write to tech support for help. How will I be able to keep my profile if I c an't sing in for it?

feathergs,

Write to our community staff at webmdcommunity@webmd.net, and we'll have someone check into this problem for you so we can help you get it resolved before the cutover. Include as many details as possible.

You should have received an email in the account you used to sign up when you joined WebMD alerting you to the upcoming registration changes.

If you didn't receive that, let us know that in your email as well.

Take care,
Leona

How about more bandwidth or more mega flops to make webMD run BETTER? The last change did more to SLOOOOoooooooooooow things instead of make anything better, (as claimed).

I am finding that I cannot track my weight, fitness, or diet here for free anymore. The only place I see this available now is for a fee. The place I use to use now requires me to register again and appears to have been changed to suit businesses signed up through a healthcare provider connected to WebMD.

WHY don't you ADAPT a newWAVE universal CHAT community like XAT chat [xat.com]... you are catching on with Google Blogger; xat Chat is the shiznit; you can hop from community to community; and the graphix and vesitiliy; and forum flexibiligy are seemless. Please; Please. If ur going to make a change. Make REAL change; and DONT waste our TIME with you OMINOUS and stupid emails.

Over the 5 years I have been on this board my screen name changes for one reason or another. So I now have maybe 5 accounts linked to one email address. I forgot the passwords to all but one (the current one). All info on them are the same, so the forgot my password feature never works. How can I get all of the accounts deleted so I can have my current account linked to my email?

I went to refin. only owed 87thous on in 2006 and got hit with two, not one predator lenders, now owening 235.00 for a 30,000 home imporovement loan. I have since had 4 nervous breakdowns. THIS "ANONYMOUS" PERSON NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND THAT ALL YOU ARE DOING IS UPDATING YOUR WEBSITE TO MOST LIKELY MAKE IT EASIER TO NAVIGATE AND POST COMMENTS, ETC. IF HE/SHE HAS SO MUCH TO COMPLAIN ABOUT HAVE HER/HIM GO TO ANOTHER SITE LIKE DISCOVERY HEALTH OR SOMETHING. ALL I HAVE READ IS COMPLAINT AFTER COMPLAINT. I THINK THIS SITE IS WONDERFUL AND SO HELPFUL TO ALL OF US WITH HEALTH ISSUES AND QUESTIONS. THANK YOU FOR BEING THERE FOR ALL OF US WHO UNDERSTAND.
WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL IF YOU ARE CHANGING THE WAY YOU SIGN IN??AND YOUR PROFILE INFORMATION, SO WHAT?
ANYONE WITH SUCH A BIG PROBLEM, AS I SAID BEFORE, SHOULD GO TO ANOTHER SITE.

I SHOULD HAVE SPECIFIED, SINCE THERE ARE SO MANY THAT ARE USING THE ANONYMOUS NAME, THAT THE ONE I WAS REFERING TO IS THE ONE THAT DID ALL THE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE CHANGE, NOT THE OTHERS THAT DIDN'T HAVE A PROBLEM, JUST QUESTIONS. AND, I GOT THE BIGGEST KICK OUT OF THE ONE WHO ASKED IF THIS CHANGE HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE OBAMA ELECTION. I ROTFL. AT LEAST I WOULD HAVE IF I COULD.
EVERYONE ELSE, SORRY IF YOU THOUGHT I WAS REFERRING TO YOU.

I am finding that I cannot track my weight, fitness, or diet on here for free anymore. The only place it is available now has a charge. The place I use to use now requires me to register again (yes to re-register, not just confirm) and appears to have been changed to be for businesses signed up through a healthcare provider connected to WebMD instead of regular folks that have been using it on their own. So this change is causing me to not only not be able to access what I am use to using, but also would cost me to be able to if I chose to continue here, which I won't because I can do it for free elsewhere.

However, I do love WebMD for the Symptom Checker and other information, so I will still come when I need that information, unless of course it becomes no longer free or no longer user-friendly.

For example, I was using the LEAP program to track my workouts, but the tracking program and all my records are gone. I was also tracking my weight, percent body fat, and other things. I've sent several emails asking what happended to the tracking programs and data, but no response yet.
