Welcome to Pelvis World!
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

The moderators ("Mod Squad") here at WebMD have been asking me to do a blog, and also to share more of my feelings about being the ruler of "Pelvis World". I have been interested in women's health even before my graduation as a nurse practitioner in 1983. My teaching career began in 1989 when, after joining at faculty at Oregon Health & Science University, I gave a lecture that was an absolute bomb. I was using someone else's slides (pre-Powerpoint days), and was so nervous that I wrote out the lecture and read it! Those poor medical students were squirming in their seats it was so BAD. That lecture style had no place to go but to improve!

My first job with the early version of WebMD seemed like a good idea because I loved answering questions from patients, their families, and students. It also incorporated my love for learning something new everyday. Thanks to the amazing questions from all of you this has been one of my most favorite jobs (second only to being a cook in a macrobiotic restaurant for about 50 cents per hour). While I am feeling as nervous about "blog" as I did that first lecture, I will undoubtedly get accustomed to this new venue as well. With your excellent questions, we'll continue to explore new topics together...that makes it all worthwhile.

Yours,

Jane Harrison-Hohner aka the "Pelvis Queen"

Just wondering if you might be able to shed some light on this....
For several years I've suffered from pain in the pelvis or hip area which I contributed to the onset of arthritis. Some days are worse then others. About a week before my period its more noticable. Some mornings I wake up slowly crawling out of bed because the pain is so intense I can't move. About a year ago, it had started to ache during the day. Driving home from work, I sneezed and pain rushed in and I thought I would pass out. I had to have my family *try* to get me out of my car. I couldn't sit, stand, bend for a long time. I made an appointment with my doctor who examined me and said he couldn't figure it out but would have me take an x-ray. That being done he found nothing on it. Said it could have been tendinitis(?). I still have the pain (right side mainly) but not as bad as it was last year. Your thoughts on the matter?

I have similar symptoms. An MRI shows that I have a stress fracture in my pelvis. The theory is it developed from my long-distance running. Estimate is 6 weeks- 6 months to heal.

It's uncommon, my Dr. didn't catch it. I had to push for a referral to an Orthopedic surgeon.

Hi I'm doing a project for school about all the bones, muscles, and nerves involved in a movement and my movement is a pelvic thrust (like Elvis). I was just wondering if you knew which muscles, bones, joints, and nerves are used. Any information you have would be helpful. Thank you!

to what tinydancer20 said...I fractured my pelvis about 2.5 years ago. The doctors have attributed it to my cross country training. The fracture has since healed, but the intense pain continues on a daily basis. THe shooting pain you are feeling is probably your piriformis muscle spasming on your sciatic nerve. THere are times when I have to brace myself before I sneeze because I am anticipating the intense, shooting, crippling pain that comes with it. I think you should try to get a prescription for physical therapy and ask about muscle relaxers. This has all helped me, but it is a continuous battle.

Hi, I have 2 hairline fractures in my pelvic bone. It was injured on 06/06/o8. I am still in a lot of pain when I walk, sit, or try to lay on my side. More x-rays were taken on 08/15/08.The Dr. said it is healing , it just takes time. Shouldn't it be better by now? What can I do to help it heal faster? I am off work and am very frustated. This is all because of being hit i the buttucks with a shopping cart during a severe storm. Please help.
Thank you,

I have 3 stress fractures of my pelvis from a fall onto a marble floor 7/13/08. Is it all right to walk using a cane? Everything I've read says bedrest or walk using crutches. I have a sprained wrist and can't use crutches. Thanks so much!

I went to Bone specialist. He took more x-rays and said my freactures are healing. He said it might take 6 months or more. He also said it will not hurt its healing to bear weight on it now ( It has been over 2 months or more)and not use the cane any more.I hope your sprained wrist heals quickly ,too. Thanks for responding to my question.

I was in a car accident 07-02-08. I had a pelvic fracture(on the right side), a sacral fracture and 6+ broken ribs(on the left side). How long will it take for all these broken/fractures to completely heal. When will I be able to bear weight again? Also, when will I bea able to return to work?

Perhaps you can help sort out where I need to go next. I am 2 yrs. S/P fusion L4-S1. I have two titanium rods and 6 screws. Approx. 6 weeks ago I took a hard fall from a second step on to a hardwood floor. I landed flat on my lower back striking my upper back and head against the steps. Initaily I was sore but no big deal until a few days later when I went to the pool for deep water aerobics. At that point I started to get alot of pain in my lt. buttocks. I believe it is the piriformis muscle. As I have problems sitting and walking and also sort of a burning pain that goes out to the greater trochanter and also down the back of my post. thigh to the knee. I saw my FP and he did regular xrays that were read as neg. for fracture and hardware in place. I did a medrol dose pak which did help BUT still everytime I go for a good walk I end up in misery. I can do the water aerobics ( deep end no impact) but it leaves that muscle sore. I know xrays are not 100% and because of the hardware I have my understanding is an MRI would not be very useful. I have been doing physical therapy and stretching which feels better immediately after. The pain has never gone all the way away and its definately activity related. It is still uncomfortable to sit but not the extreme pain I had in the beginning.( prior to the medrol dose pak) Seems like I may need some other diagnostic done but do not know what it may be. I will see my FP again this next week and see what he has to suggest. He initially wanted to do an MRI but I know the distortion from the hardware does not give the radiologist a clear picture. THx. for any suggestions. PS yes, I am a nurse.

i am in my 40's, just had an accident last weekend, have a fracture of my sacrum on the right, my left is killing me also. had an mri yesterday and can't get the MD until Tues to see how much time I will need off from work. I put myself on crutches today which i think helped. I am hoping if i stay off my leg this week maybe I can return to work next week which would be 2 weeks after the injury. If this too hopeful? I most likely have a fractured rib too, but this i can deal with. It is the pain running down both buttocks that is the problem. I am using a heating pad. The Skellaxin and Ultram made me weak and nauseous after one time taking it, so i am just taking Tylenol and taking half of another relaxant, Flexeril. Anyone hopeful on me returning to work after 2 weeks of this? I don't want to lose my P/T job which happens to be in a hospital? Any thoughts?

I previously had surgery for endomitreosis. I've been doing fine since then but two weeks ago I ran in a half marathon that was an endurance challenge so the trail was hilly, rough, and muddy. Since then I have developed pains similar to those with the endo, (i.e. pains in the hips, groin/pelvic area, and some knee.)
Could the pains that I'm experiencing be from the marathon or is it more likely that my dreaded Endo has returned?

Well what a pain in the butt.I had tri/level fusion done 1/15/08,from my L/2 down to s/1.Fusion was SLOW,have not fused completley at lower level. But now I am having level 10 pain at S/1 and below,to tail bone, pain wraps around the lower pelvic area, down legs into toes,in both hips and butt.I just had a ct,and flexion image done and Neuro says my sacro joints are RATTY???Have NO reflexes on left side.He put me on a double dose mederol pack, did nothing, actually increased pain???So i guesss what I am leading up to is should I now get another,2nd opinion?I have been on percs,5/325 can take 8 per day,but keep it at 6 because of all the tylennol. This does not even cover the pain.I am totally confused at what to do next.Any insight would be helpfull.

I just started back to work after not working for 2 yrs. I work in the kitchen of a restaurant. I have to stand for 5 hours at a time, with some bending, sweeping etc... The first night after work, my lower back was so stiff and painful. I had shooting pains in my tailbone and both side of my pelvic bones but mostly to the right. It felt like, if I moved the wrong way, something would catch on a nerve. I had a problem getting out of bed. I walked it off the next day, went back to work and it wasnt as bad the next night but still catching sometimes. I think it could be related to when I fell on a concrete floor at a previous job 3 years ago. I had an xray but nothing was broke. It took me a few days to recover but then I would notice the same type of pain if I had to stand 6 hours with limited amount of space to move around in. My husband says to go to the Dr. but we dont have health insurance right now. Does this sound like something I should have checked out again?

i'm a massage therapist and have a question reguarding one of my clients. we've been working with some structural integration and myo-facial release. she wants to know if the sacro-illiac joint is fuses, and i told her that it's like the cranial bones in a childs head, they once were not, but now they are. there is more than bone holding it together, and the tighter those ligaments are, the harder it is for those areas to flex as they should, causing some of the pain. -- i want to make sure i'm not blowing smoke here. (that's what i was taught)

Hi,
I have a question that I hope someone might be able to help me with. I was diagnosed with a pelvic fracture about November 28 08. The thing is is that I did not do anything to hurt it. I have arthritis and I am taking prednisone. Of course this made my bones weak and also made me gain weight. So I guess the combination of these two things is what did it. Now I am paranoid about every pain I get...thinking I must have re-fractured it. I went to the ortho doc on March 31 and he said that it looks healed now but, I'm still having quite a bit of pain. It feels "heavy" and constantly feels like my crotch is being pinched. It's also aches all the time. Kinda feels like menstrual cramps. So my question is if it's supposedly healed, why does it still hurt so much? Is it just the muscles? I didn't have any sharp pains when I did it. It just started hurting so much that I couldn't walk anymore and my whole crotch and upper thighs went numb. I thought it was maybe the arthritis starting in my hips so I finally went to the doctor and thats when they told me I had a pelvic fracture. I just thought "what the heck" because I hadn't done anything to hurt it. I'm probably just worrying over nothing but some reassurance would be GREAT! Can anyone tell me what kind of pain would be considered a normal part of the healing process as opposed to a re-fracture? Any advice would be helpful! THANKS!

I broke my pelvic bone in a car crash in 1989. It healed back crooked leaving my left leg 1/2" shorter than my right. it causes severe pain in lower back when I sit or lay down and causes very sharp pains to shoot down right leg when I try to walk more than 30 feet or so at a time. No pain meds. help to ease the shooting pains in my leg. do you have any suggestions that may help ease the pain? thanx!!!

All I seem to have to do is twist my hip in a certain way on my left side only and the muscle going from the top of my pelvis to my knee will sort of run itself across the greater trochanter of my femur. A few minutes after doing this however I'll have throbbing pain from my hip to my knee with it staying mainly at my knee and won't go away for the rest of the day. Can someone tell me what that is and if there's anyway to fix it? I've been able to do it as long as I can remember but I really don't want the pain anymore.

I am a runner and in Jan 2009 tore my conjoint tendon & ended up with a stress fracture of the pelvis. It took a couple of months to undercover the fracture because the xray didn't show anything. After an MRI the linear tear & stress fracture showed. I have days when I don't even know when I have an injury and there are days when I hurt (like today). I am allergic to aspirin & have trouble taking anti-imflammatories (like Advil). I still can't run except a little bit on a treadmill (doctor has me on a walk 1 minute/run 2 minute program right now to try to get me back into running). It is definately activity activated. It is terribly frustrating because before I was exceptionally active and now have to spend more time as a couch potato than I do running. Doctor said it could take up to 18 months to heal. Does it really get better?

On May 26th 2009, I had a full right hip replacement. I turned 57 in June and was very active until
I developed groin pain while doing a Pilates exercise 5 yrs ago. An x-ray 2 yrs ago did not show any arthritis, but a second x-ray this past March showed that there was no cartilage left.

I did not progress as well as expected and when I went in for my one month visit, they found I had several hairline fractures in my femur and pelvis. Though the x-ray shows that the fractures are healed I still have constant low grade pain. It gets must worse if I stand or walk 15-20 minutes. I also have intense (dibilitating) pain if I sit upright for more than 30-40 minutes.

Thinking it might be tendonitis or bursitis, my orthopedist has now prescribed aqua therapy and put me on anti-inflammatory. I feel confident that the pain will go away, but is it true that it could last as long as 6 months?

BTW- I do know that I need to get a bone density test once the pain is gone. Right now, I'm just trying to get my life back.

I fractured my hip and sacrum, and split my pubic bones apart by crotching 6 logs at basic training, and continued on with my remaining 6 weeks, which included road marches- wearing a 45lb pack-, and many other obsticals. They never x-ray'dmy hips at basic so after completing AIT and finally got to go home I went to the orthopedic. They diagnosed me with osteitis pubis condensi. Which they told was a permanent injury due to the fact that it wasn't treated right away. I am still in the national guard, but have recently been trying really hard to pass my physical training test. So I have been doing sit-ups 3-4 times a week, I started noticing pain in my back, like it was getting stuck on the way up from the situp. I went to the dr, and they did x-rays of my pelvis and back and saw that one of my vertebra's was farther forward then the others, like spondylolisthesis. Could this have been caused by my hip- pelvis injury? Please help.

Hello, I ran the Akron Marathon on Sept 26th and at mile 21 I felt something pop in my groin area. I had to walk the last 5 miles. About 10 days later, I went for a run, about 1.5 miles into the run the pain came back to the same area. I went to the doctor and she told me no herina, probably a muscle strain. Just said to rest and start off slowly. Just trying to get some ideas on what this is. I do not have a problem walking, climbing, and other activities. Appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks

In august of 08 (at age 40) I ended up in the ER due to deep hip pain and feeling very sick. Turned out I had a fracture in my sacrum (never had heard of one before) and mono. No surgery just told to take it easy and it would heal. Now in October 09 I feel flat on my back on the cement garage floor after accidently stepping on a furniture dolly. I can't lift my left leg forward much and not high at all. I can move it to the side. Now I'm feeling that 'deep hip' pain again which i believe to be reinjuring my sacrum. Could I have broken my hip too?
