According to the CDC, over 49% of Americans have weight challenges and health complications that are caused by unhealthy eating, large portion sizes, and lack of exercise. Managing weight, family, and having a handle on work-life balance are all challenging tasks people face daily. It’s even more challenging when you add a health disease such as diabetes.
As someone with diabetes, managing your weight is not always an easy task because everything we do and eat affects our numbers. If you have diabetes, it’s important to manage your weight because having a healthy weight can reduce your chances of having high cholesterol, getting a heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure.
When I learned I had diabetes, I got stressed and started gaining more weight.
Unfortunately, I was in a state of depression for over 2 years, and this led to significant weight gain. I was in a downward spiral. My sugar levels were through the roof, and I didn’t know how to come out of it.
I didn’t recognize myself in the mirror because I was ashamed that I had diabetes. Caring for my 2-year-old son at the time made me realize I had to make some changes to live for him and myself.
I wanted to do and be better. I knew that if I wanted to get my diabetes under control, I had to lose some weight and make some major lifestyle changes. I started by replacing a soda a day with water.
I increased my drinking water over some time until I no longer desired the taste of sodas. Then, I stopped eating out and frying foods regularly. Lastly, I started to walk 15 minutes a day, walking in place in front of the TV until I was able to do 5K and 10K walks.
These changes made a tremendous difference in my life and health. I started to lose weight. My sugar levels started going down. I even looked and felt so much better too. I was so proud of myself! I even became an advocate to help others who are just like me to let you all know that I’m here for you and that you’re not alone.
I’m going to be completely honest and tell you that the journey was not easy. It was hard, and I failed a few times, but the most important thing is that I kept trying.
I want you to know that it’s OK to have bad days. I still do, from time to time. When that happens, take a moment and regroup; don’t beat yourself up, and get back to it.
Here are some steps you can take for managing your weight that I used:
- Eat balanced meals.
- Manage your food portion sizes.
- Drink water daily.
- Exercise at least 30 minutes a day.
The benefits of managing your weight and exercising are that these changes help you control your blood sugar. As a result, you feel better, you can keep your weight down, and it reduces stress.
Many Americans have weight challenges, but if you have diabetes, it can cause some other issues and could ultimately cause death. Choose to live by starting today, by managing your diabetes and your weight!
Start small and get it done. You can do this because your life matters!
