How Lifestyle Changes Like Gardening Helped Me With my Sleep Apnea

I’ve had sleep apnea for over 5 years now, and during that time I’ve had to adjust my life somewhat to cope with my condition. Here are some steps I’ve taken to manage my sleep apnea and make the most of my CPAP therapy.

Less Stress

I like to take walks, play guitar, and have frequent dinners with friends to manage my stress levels. You’ll get better sleep when you have less stress, and this has helped me a great deal in managing my sleep apnea.

I try to avoid situations where stress may play a factor. While stress is still a part of my life, I do my best to mitigate it. This spring, I started a garden on the deck. I like to relax outside, and I get the added bonus of picking fresh vegetables for me and my wife.

Diet Changes

When you’re carrying around excess weight, this can make sleep apnea even worse. Over the past few years, I’ve managed to lose weight by reducing my sugar consumption.

Losing a few pounds has made sleeping at night a bit easier for me. I try to watch what I eat. During my last sleep examination, the number of my waking apnea episodes each night dropped slightly. So I think my weight loss has positively impacted my condition.

Fewer Late Nights

I know that I need a good night’s rest to manage my sleep apnea effectively. I try to avoid late nights as much as possible. I stick to a regular sleep schedule because I know that good quality rest is what I need the most.

I Try to Walk More

I know that weight loss helps manage sleep apnea, so I’ve started walking more. I sleep better at night if I get in some simple exercise during the day like walking.

Try adding some simple exercises to your daily routine. It’s going to give you more energy, and a bit of weight loss can go a long way toward better management of your condition.

Active in Sleep Apnea Community

I stay active in the sleep apnea community. One way I’ve managed to deal with my apnea is to write about it. My career is writing, so I find writing down my thoughts and experiences helps with dealing with my condition. I also like sharing my experiences in sleep apnea forums online.

I Don’t Get Overwhelmed

When I have bad days with my CPAP or don’t want to use my mask, I don’t stress about it. The next day I get back to using my mask and don’t allow the bad experience to overwhelm me.

If you stay consistent with your CPAP therapy, you’ll get the most out of it. If you have a major problem with your mask, ask your doctor if there’s something different that you might be able to use.

By making some changes in your life, you’ll get the most out of your CPAP therapy. Try to stay consistent with your usage as this will help develop that all-important sleep habit. I’m thankful for my machine, mask, and the better-quality sleep I now experience each night.
